- How to solder bicycle brake, gear or even throttle and clutch cable ends to stop fraying
Great skills for any DIY enthusiast, for best results use Rosin Core solder and a soldering gun.

A very useful video. My local bike shop has repaired the same cable 3 times, but only ever used the crimp on bits, which inevitably come off. This method is much better. Not too keen on unwinding the cable, but I have a 2 metre cable and only need 550mm, so plenty of practice wire. Got new cable cutters arriving shortly.
Cable cutters give a nice clean cut, worth getting a pair if you're going to do bike maintenance.
Pretty pointless buying specialised tools to use a few times ever on your own bike. I think the cutter integrated into a pair of pliers is fine.
if you solder it then cut it at the solder joint even with normal pliers/cutters you can doa good job, but yes a cable cutter always helps
It's not fine, they don't cut gear/ brake cables nicely, they leave a frayed end which will muck up your cable outer. If you can even get it to go in.
Why would you cut the cable before putting it in the housing? That's like assembling your furniture in IKEA and then complaining how difficult it is to get home. Put the cable through the housing and then cut the cable. Then solder or apply one of those crimpable aluminium ends.
except when most people who look after their bikes will replace the cables around once a year!
Amazing tip. Ty for sharing!
I use angle grinder to cut bike cables and protect end with a piece of insulating tape. It is simple and it works.
At least someone got what I was looking for ❤️
If u make the cable end a bit longer than shown u can tuck it behind the brake spring stop points,it looks much tidier that way & u wont catch ur legs or clothes on it 😊
it actually works I tried it on my scooter and it helped me out so much I'm going to fray up wires and unfray them
🤣
Your cables should never have begun fraying if you cut them right. If you failed to cut them right, then just bind them with hotglue or electrical tape. They're required to have blunt ends anyway.
If you MUST solder, do NOT use flux-core solder. Use ACID-core solder instead because rosin flux doesn't act as flux for steel.
If you use a torch, then use silver solder, which uses a borate flux.
Great info
How many watts does your soldering iron put out (or taking in.
Super idea😍👍
I will try. I may infuse solder in the clamping area when installing new cables. To reduce the cutting action of bypass clamping on brakes arm.
Thanks! I've been using nail polish, seems to work and a good selection of colour!
Good idea
Nice
great vid
You can also solder the last 1/8" of the cable prior to threading it through the housing.
Why would you do that? The end is already factory soldered.
@@jamsams As a guess:
If you cut your cable, you may exceed the soldered section and need to restore it.
I have some generic cables excessively long that would need it.
So, does the solder bond with the wire? It doesn't fall off?
can hands twist the heavy duty break cables?
Great, now I need to learn how to use brake cables for derailleurs because they're less prone to breaking. Planned obsolescence!
Good Video
Voice Robotic
What type of solder were u using?,was it silver solder? Or something else?
any solder can be used
'
good idea about cutting, cleaning steel wool, re twister wire again...
but hand have a grease / oil finger print on the cable...
what kind of metal lead can do that hold tight on the steel cable wire
mine fell off what do i do?
will a BIC work!
That’s the voice they use on Amazon prime uk murder docos.
Why not use an alloy crimp?
what if it falls off?
Thats easy
Why you solder twice?
BECAUSE
Sorry, solder will not stick to modern cables, especially Campagnolo.
tell that to the solder as it sticks, use Flux Cored Solder
There is an easier way, called crimps which also looks nicer and is far quicker but today we are going to talk about soldering which needs extra equipment, extra set of skills, extra time and looks ugly.... But here we go😜😜😜
Crimps fall off. Solder will never fall off. Most men have the tools and the experience to solder cable ends already. With soldered ends you can remove the cables and thread them back through when doing maintenance. Its absolutely the superior method unless you're a teenager or one of those guys who not only cant use tools but your tool collection consists of a Phillip's head screwdriver and some scissors.
really dont like the text to speech voice :/
yes I think it was a bad idea too
Well, it's better than listening to someone hauk back snotters and ramble off on tangents. Concise is good.
Iggy Norant well said 👍also some people might not be comfortable with speaking on youtube ,also they might have difficult to understand accents 🤔
is this a joke?
What part would you think was a joke? You new to the bike world or what?
@@abortionsurvivor6639 this is not what people do in the "bike world," just get some cable tips and crimp them on. Takes all of 3 seconds. And we use cable cutters, no fraying, cuts with very little force.
I was wondering the same thing. "Bike maintenance videos"??? Do they all involve a rusty department store bike that has just been rained on? I enjoy not knowing whether or not I'm being trolled.
LMFAO THX bro. I just binged watched 5 videos of European techs with carbon bikes in perfectly organized shops and then I see this guy. the complete opposite ..I really appreciate him making the video but I am still cracking up
It's a solution to a minor problem, a simple fix
What a waste of bloody time. A crimp more than suffices.
It also looks tidier than some shit solder.
how will you reinstall the cable with a crimp on the end?
