Part 38: Fuel Tank Restoration With POR-15 Sealing Kit - My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration

  • I guarantee that aside from part 38 of my '76 Cosmo Restoration, you will not find more footage on TH-cam of someone shaking a fuel tank. You have my word that this is the most tank shaking coverage you will see in any video. Why so much tank agitation? Because in this episode I clean and seal the 40 year old fuel tank using the POR-15 fuel tank restoration kit. This is something which several have requested be shown so I figured as sealing was a common issue for old fuel tanks, why not dedicate an episode to the task. I begin by recycling some of the cleaning footage from the past two episodes then move right into the process of the POR-15 kit. First any remaining debris is "chained out" by using the old trick of rattling some chains around inside the tank. Then the tank is cleaned with the supplied cleaner, etched with MetalPrep and finally coated with the sealer. The end result is a tank looking better inside than the day it came the assembly line which will not be subject to future corrosion. To go with the spiffy clean interior, the outside is given a coat of POR-15 rust preventative paint as well.
    And did I mention this is my first episode in HD?!

    Excellent detailed information about an obnoxious task. Don't know if this will help anyone but when it came time to blow my tank out to avoid flash rust, I jammed my leaf blower in one of the big holes and let it blast away. It moves a lot of air much faster than my air compressor does. Thanks for posting vids like this. They help keep me going on a long project when you see others whittling away one mini-project at a time!

      Thank you! The leaf blower idea is a good one. Probably a lot more energy efficient than using the compressor as well.

    I was gonna say it'd be funny if this resto-mod job ended up being 76 parts, but I see you've already touched on that.
    Fuel system work looks like SO much fun. Glad to see it's working out for you.
    Also like the new Camera setup. Picture quality is great!

      chapsy1983 I'm actually thinking it could be less than 70 parts because finally, I can see the end coming. The list of large mechanical and fab projects is very short at this point and I can see moving to the interior closer and closer. I've learned over the years that the fuel system is one of those things which will make or break a project car. At the least it can cause constant tuning problems and unpredictability, at the worst, blown engines or burned down cars.

      Very good point, it is a critical area, and I can understand why you were so particular about refurbing it just right.

      Jokes aside, great explanations for the long way to do it!
      I've a small motor tank that rusted until seeping around the petcock. I plan to use muriatic acid then baking soda, then Denatured alcohol to dry. I think that should be enough if the water and baking soda get the rust out. If not, a small chain.

    I had a VW tank that had a bunch of rust in it. I tried everything I could think of. I finally bought 15 gallons of vinegar and let it set for about a week. Best trick I found.

    • @stephengomes977
      @stephengomes977 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just did that for a VW Thing, the tank looked "OK" but after letting it soak in vinegar, wow what a difference. I didn't think there would be that much rust and crud, the vinegar looks orange with A LOT of what looks like sludge/mud. So it must have been pretty bad. I got this 2 years ago, and I saw the last service within that year the tank was drained of gas and "cleaned" what ever that meant. I think the dealer ripped off the previous owner on alleged services they did to the Thing, because I had to replace hoses and gaskets that should have been replaced when they took care of the tank. Today I drained/rinsed the vinegar and did a phosphoric etch, tomorrow I will use POR gas tank sealant, that's some good stuff!

    hey Aaron, sweet videos. I am also a fabricator/ perfectionist. I have been glued to your videos because you do a very good job showing the processes involved. so many car shows on TV make everything look so quick and simple. something as simple as a fuel filter mount takes hours to complete... well done.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +04snopro Thank you! And yes, I hear you about the car shows. Having been involved in production of one, it was always amusing how the camera crew would so up for an hour every few days to film the installation of parts that took 2 days to fabricate, fit or troubleshoot. I try to show what really happens, while still cutting out the boring or repetitive stuff. Each one of these episodes is the result of about 8 - 12 hours of footage.

    Aaron......if you cut your siphon hose at a 45Deg angle(5 in. from the discharge end) about halfway thru with the point to the bulk tank.....then push shop air thru the cut toward the discharge end of the hose. the shop air will pull a very nice vacuum and start the syphon without your mouth getting any nasty stuff! I have been doing this for years. it only takes a few seconds of shop air and presto.......syphon is started.

    Wow amazing work. I have the exact problem with my 1991 Miata gas tank. The fuel pump and the whole assembly unit also has that white & yellowish crud on it. I also see some inside the tank with rust and other gas related sludge. But unlike your gas tank I don't have that grease sludge that was one gasoline. There are so many Miatas in the junkyards here in southern California that I'd rather hunt for a good gas tank. Great video. You are one very dedicated dude to your classics. Hopefully I won't have to do that to my 79 Caballero/El Camino. It runs great so I doubt it.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I think if you have the option to get a new tank, then go with that option. It might not be cheaper, but it will certainly be a lot less work than restoring the existing tank.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem. As long as the tank isn't rotted through, the POR15 sealing kit should do the job. Even pinholes will seal up, but large areas will need to be CAREFULLY welded.

    Great video, I learned a lot and did my first gas tank in May (1967 M151A1 ex US Army MUTT) y tank didn't come out as perfect as yours, but I have a VW Thing that will get the POR-15 treatment tomorrow. I used vinegar to get rid of the rust, followed by a phosphoric acid etch. I saw some very minor flash rust, but I think it might be OK, I might do another phoshoric treatment. I used a back pack leaf blower and heat gun dried out very quickly. Keep up the great job, I know it takes a lot of effort to make these videos while working on a project by yourself, and could be done in half the time if it wasn't for recording and editing. I like your instructional approach and humor!

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The flash rust is OK if using the POR-15 sealer. It's sort of expected. Just make sure that all of the white dust is blown off or there will be adhesion problems.

    You're video much better than other videos on this subject. I think Por15 has zinc in there phosphoric acid prep solution. Leaves zinc phosphate film. Don't know how much better this is than using only phosphoric acid.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct, the Metal Prep / Metal Ready is a phosporic acid solution with zinc ions. It leaves a zinc coating. I have some bare metal (the blasted engine bay of the car) which was treated with Metal Ready 8 years ago and is still 95% rust free.

    Just a little tip. you may prefer to use a drywall sanding block for paint prep, they conform to odd shapes and are usually made with a 300gr side and a 150 gr side, they work flawlessly for me.

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ronald Colman Ah yes, I have used those before. I didn't have one on hand in the shop because I decided to paint the exterior of the tank as a spur of the moment decision. Took a look at it with all the damage and residue from coating the inside and figured the outside should look as good as the interior. So I just grabbed what I had on hand and started sanding. 150 grit really did the job in a few minutes.

    Aaron,
    Siphoning, there is a better tasting way.
    You should have an air compressor and a dusting pistol in that shop of yours.
    Put one end of your syphon hose into tank as usual, place the other end lower than the tank.
    Taking your dusting pistol, place it at the end of the hose just behind the opening pointing in the direction of the hose, pull the trigger.
    The compressed air from the gun creates a low pressure at the hose opening ie suction and it will pull the required fluid down the hose, all without insulting your taste buds or causing odema in your lungs if you were to inhale something like fuel or acid with your current method.
    You zlso have impressive water pressure in your shop, you owe me a beer and a dry keyboard.
    Nice work on the rx5 I havent seen one in decades.
    Cheers

    Aaron, thanks for the awesome videos they are really informative and great to watch!
    I am doing a similar restoration on my rx7 fuel tank, and I am curious as to why you chose Por-15 fuel tank sealer over some of the others (caswell, red-kote or Eastwood)? I have heard of some issues with the Por-15 peeling over time and clogging fuel pickups but have no experience with any of the products.
    Also thank you for the information on the fuel pump electrical connector from racetronix, I have been searching for a product like this for a long time!

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dansyoung Primarily because I have fairly extensive experience with POR-15 products and in my experience they have always worked as advertised when the instructions are followed. And that's the key. It's no joke that I made reference to the instructions several times in this video. Searching around there are stories of all the coatings failing which is likely more due to improper prep than anything else.

      I considered it, but the stock tank was actually in very good shape and bolts right in. No reason not to use it really, with a few updates.

    Question wasn't easier or quicker to split tank in half and then solder back together ? When all done and just needed to prep and seal the joining area ?

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      diego villanueva I think splitting the seam in a way it could be soldered back would be very difficult. The seam is pinch welded all the way around the tank (likely done with a wheel on a spot welder) which also forms the mounting flange. I'm not sure how a weld like that would be removed without cutting off the flange.

    Hi, thanks for uploading your videos. They're really helpful. I'm doing the same procedure you're on this video. I just had a quick question about the gas tank. My tank is from a 76 datsun. I wanted to ask you, I notice my tank inside has a small cylindrical mesh filter inside that's connected to the metal fuel line.
    Would the POR 15 sealer also seal the mesh filter? 😬 there's no way I can cover it or remove it. I was wondering your opinion if your tank also has a filter inside.
    Thanks

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it would definitely clog the filter. I'm not sure I have a solution for that however I'm very surprised it is non-removable. My tank didn't have such a filter and even if it did, it wouldn't matter as I have converted it to an in-tank style EFI pump.
      In theory you could blow air through the line to try and clear the mesh before the sealer clears though I have no idea how well that would work out.

      @@aaroncake Thanks for the advice. Wish I could show you a pic but there's none on google I could find of this tank. If you put the flash light inside you can barely see it. I tried taking it off with a wire that would reach it but didn't work. I guess it was put on when they where welding the tank and meant to be non removable and never to be seen. 👀 I left it on and sealed it up to see what happens. I'll probably end up braking it off if the fuel filter is got sealed also. It wouldn't need it any more I suppose. I'm still amazed how the hell is there a non removable fuel filter built inside my tank.
      Thanks Aaron! Keep up the cool videos 😀👍

    Hi there, fantastic video I have subscribed and look forward to viewing your other videos, can I ask what you did about the inside of the pickup/return pipes??, did they clog I would like to line mine with por-15?

    • @aaroncake
      @aaroncake  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Clare In my case I didn't care since all of those tubes were pre-clogged and I converted the tank to EFI, so my feed and return lines are now on the pump flange (episode 37 I think). The stock carb lines were very clogged. Couldn't open them up with compressed air. But if you have to preserve those lines, it would be critical to drain all the sealant out of them before allowing the tank to dry. Because if the sealant solidifies inside, there would be no way to remove it unless you have a long flexible drill bit. The larger diameters are likely fine, but the narrower lines (1/8") could be clogged.
