      Yes Phyllis is dearly missed. In 1984 I went to a twin Sweet Sixteen party for friends of mine in Philadelphia, PA at a venue on Wadsworth Ave. The family was close to Phyllis Hyman (the father's son had dated her) and she was in attendence.
      Believe me when I say she immediately makes an impression: regal & statuesque, wearing a cream outfit with one of her iconic crowns on, totally radiant on stage with the twins of honor. She walked past me with two drinks in her hands, smiling saying 'excuse me'. I awkwardly smiled back and made way for her to pass while I stared (probably had my mouth wide open) 😆.
      I was starstruck and that's the sum of my experience with Ms. Hyman in person. I was a fan then and I am now. Reside In Paradise Ms. Phyllis Hyman.

      Do you think Dap got upset at Half Pint for his stupidity after he had sex with Jane Tousone? It was never mentioned because of how taboo the subject of rape was .That situation could have went bad.Plus Julian wanted to top Dap by getting the loyalty of Half Pint by giving his girl(who happened to be the finest on campus) away .It was a win win for Julian to get away from Jane.Get a new Girl and make Dap his college nemesis look stupid..

    My favorite Spike Lee film, the dance choreography is amazing win the two sororities meet at the hair salon, also Spike Lee put the actresses that were in the sororities in different hotels, the Gamma Ray sorority had better hotels than their rivals, so there was tension when the actresses meet on screen, and this film has the classic Spike Lee ending, "Wake Up!"

      Yes I read and heard about the Jigs/Fellas vs. the Gammas/Rays treatment to spark friction on set for the film. If I were to use the same technique today, I'd do the same but secretly pay the Jigs/Fellas *slightly* more per day than the Gammas/Rays. Just so there would be a balance for the lesser conditions the Jigs/Fellas had to endure. And if the secret got out during filming, it potentially could create even more interesting chemistry for the cast.

    6:43 the fact that some Black people try their best to copy colonizers and settlers. Black Greeks never sat right with me, especially after learning slave owners would give their “favorite” slaves Greek names.
    We will never elevate by copying colonizers and capitalism. Black Americans have to work so much on decolonization of our minds.

    Tyra this was a great review. I went to an HBCU. We used to watch and analyze school daze all the time. The Samuel Jackson scene was very relatable! All of these schools bump up against the “hood” and talking to the locals it was always a big deal about the students looking down or thinking they were better. It’s definitely one of subjects that comes up frequently. Just my two cents friend in my head ❤

  • @lintonharvey560
    @lintonharvey560 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    I think it’s super relatable that you occasionally can’t get through reactions with a nice soundtrack without music breaks. Sometimes I can’t get through normal conversations without music breaks. If someone accidentally ends a sentence with a song title or something that reminds me of a lyric, I’m probably gonna start singing that song. At least to myself. My life’s always been a musical.

Shows the conflicts the students had within the community they resided in and not just frats & social circles.

  • @lintonharvey560
    @lintonharvey560 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    The scene with Sammy L. and the Jheri Curl gang may be out of place in the movie, but there’s a real sentiment behind it. I’m an Atlanta native. Although the story may not take place in Atlanta, Spike’s alma mater which inspired the film definitely is. Atlanta has 4 HBCUs within the city limits that were all a short walk from the drug and crime infested slums that black natives lived in. Many natives were resentful of black transplants coming down and getting their degrees from Atlanta’s many colleges, attaining the best jobs with the best salaries to afford houses in the suburbs outside of Atlanta while never stepping foot back into the poorer black communities unless they needed a haircut, rib plate, or drugs. Some (college educated or not) come down and immediately start disrespecting the city and natives, calling us country and backwards. At that time, in some of the better neighborhoods of Metro Atlanta, people were straight up surprised to see a black native living there. Including other natives. I’ve never personally held this resentment, but I’ve heard it voiced my whole life. I’ll bet Spike heard it too in his Morehouse years.

    This is one of the reviews that i’ve been waiting for thank you so much. I first saw this in theaters with my cousin who attended Clark Atlanta University when i was seven or eight years old. There were a lot of actors & actresses in this movie that didn’t have much screen time such as Joe Seneca, Art Evans, Roger Smith, Tyra Ferrell, AJ Johnson (Sharane from House Party) Cassie Davis (Aunt Bam from Meet The Browns) Kasi Lemmons & Bradford Marshalis. Fun Facts: Kadeem Hardison said on Uncensored that this was filmed before A Different World. Spike Lee said the sex scene with Dean Big Brother Al Mighty & Jane was awkward because Tisha Campbell’s mom didn’t want her doing a sex scene. Giancarlo Esposito, James Bond III & Kadeem Hardison were also in Go Tell It On The Mountain. Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, Roger Smith & Leonard Thomas were also in King Of New York, Kadeem Hardison & Tyra Ferrell were also in White Men Can’t Jump, Tyra Ferrell & Roger Smith were also in Poetic Justice, Laurence Fishburne & The late Bill Nunn were also in Always Outnumbered & Laurence Fishburne & Kadeem Hardison were also in Biker Boyz. I’m going to share this video in the black entertainment movie groups i’m in on facebook. Thank you for dipping into the the idol worship, the Boule, and the elitism portion of Black Greek Society. This is why I ultimately changed my mind about pledging. Even in todays society our brothers and sisters look up to the European standard and find achievement in their standards. Unfortunately too many of us do not know that OUR ancestors set the standard. Greeks and other European nations looked up to our Ancestors and learned from our ancestors. The shift came and the only way that Black intelligence and resilience could be broken were literally through chains ⛓️. We still see the success of the brainwashing centuries later. Many of us as a people have always been “woke” but we’ve still had to fall in line to survive and be successful, unfortunately.

    Your analysis and presentation is spot on in my opinion. The only point I would differ on is regarding the scene when the guys are in the dorm room and proceed to go to KFC where they have a confrontation with the locals. This particular scene hit home with me. I attended an HBCU that sat dead in the middle of what I called the sticks....the woods. The closest Walmart was 20 minutes away. The closest mall was 30 - 45 minutes away. Imagine not having a car. The city itself was considered a poor city. 25 years later, it's sad to say that much hasn't changed. Where I'm going with this is I remember being in orientation and our Student Leaders made it a point to warn us NOT to interact with the locals. That stuck with me then and resonated with me in the movie. The locals felt that "us" University students had a arrogance about us because we had very little interaction with them, if any at all. Now I, being fresh out of high school at 17 years old, listened and took note. I was away from home and thought there had to be a good reason for them to tell us this. The scene in School Daze, I thought, was necessary, because I know the locals felt that way about us....coming to their city for school, taking away limited resources, making them feel less human or inferior. Last, but not least, one has to appreciate all of the different issues that Spike Lee addressed in this movie alone, whether we agree with him or not. Kudos to your analysis.

It makes the scene feel disjointed and lengthy from characters we had not seen, the topic is very relevant the time we spent there feels long.

    I believe that Julian & Dap were once friends, since they were on line together and he dropped line (he reminds Half Pint of this since he & Dap are cousins) Out of all his friends, Dap was the one most critical of frats/sororities maybe because of his experiences online and having an awakening to the themes of the movie. I saw Julian’s treatment of Half Pint as payback for how he feels about Dap since he can’t get to him directly. I just love critical thinking type movies, the meanings go deep if once chooses to think that far. BRAVO!!! 👏🏼

    This is wonderful break down, and it's so good to know that the A Different World actors were in this first, I have always wondered about all the over lap, and what a trip it is to see Kadeem as a hard case. Will forever be my favorite Spike joint even with the problematic sexual politics that too many of Spike's early movies had.

    Thank you for reviewing this! I was 8 when my parents took me to see it and covered my eyes while Tisha Campbell was licking Julian’s part 😂😂😂. All the things I saw in this movie let me know that the experience of an HBCU was for me. I’ve watched this movie at different points in my life and always find something that ties to my HBCU experience. It definitely was ahead of its time.

    Amazing analysis.....call me hopelessly naive but I always felt it was a damn shame that Jane and Rachel couldnt find common ground and be friends cause to me they were both being used by their respective significant others. I didnt like Dap or Julian. Although I will concede that Dap was treated his girl with more respect everything and everyone around him were either there to support his crusade or were the enemy. And yes I totally agree Julian was a toxic narcissist whose treatment of Jane bordered on abuse. I would go further to say that Jane probably had self esteem issues before meeting Julian and so was perfect target to be manipulated Excellent analysis once again.

    Stellar movie.
    Amazing review.
    Im grateful Spike Lee addressed the colorism that took place at HBCUs. My grandmother attended Southern University in the 1950's and she told me about some of her experiences regarding "being too dark". When I was a child she once told me "boy you are getting Black" and it wasn't a compliment. As I grew up and took Afram American classes at Laney (Oakland Ca) I began to understand the pain and self hatred that we need to confront and heal.
    The Greek influence in western society is a trip.
    I just realized Leonard Lee Thomas has been in six Spike Lee films and 20 films with Samuel L Jackson.
    Ps Peace to Bill Nunn and his dad Bill Nunn Sr. Peace to Phyllis Hyman, one of my favorite songs is Magic Mona. Peace to Bill Lee.

    Great analysis as usual! LOVE ❤️ this movie!! I ended up attending an HBCU, but I must say it wasn't as much like this movie as I thought it would be. I don't remember seeing the frats 🕺🏿& sorors 💃🏾 stepping on The Set. I guess they did most of their activities "underground" on my campus. Plus, I had no interests in Greek life myself, so 🤷🏾‍♂️ . . . but I did have people I know who did pledge. They didn't tell me much but I did see them studying to memorize all the founders 👴🏾👵🏿of their particular frats & other ridiculous trivia they had to memorize. But, I'm still glad I attended an HBCU after having attending a predominantly H-WHYTE👱🏼👩🏻‍🦰 private, Christian ✝️ school most of my formative years! It was SO nice to be in an environment for a few years where I may have had "99 problems" but r@cism by my professors & classmates wasn't 1 of them! I was SO MAD 🤬 & DEPEESSED 🤦🏾‍♂️ when it came time to graduate 🎓 & I had 2 go back into the H-WHYTE 👨‍💼 run "real world" 🙄! Oh, how I miss the late 90s/early 2000s!!
