This was released in 1988 and the same problems in the black community still exists in 2021. We still didn’t wake up.

I hope Spike Lee knows that there is no better cinematic moment that represents talent, colorism, song, dance, message, movement, style, grace, joy, pain, and so much more on film for the Black community than what he created here. We all took it for enjoyment at first look but the talent and skill in writing, composing, crafting, and executing such a musical/cinematic number as this is just astounding!

What does this comment even mean? These are professional dancers in a big movie production and you’re comparing them to regular woman of today who get surgery to look a certain way? How do they compare? Even professional dancers of today don’t get body enhancement surgeries, mostly regular girls so what are you doing? 😂
This dance sequence never gets old! Spike Lee is a genius! The dancers are iconic…Jasmine Guy, Tisha Campbell, Joie Lee, etc. My 6 year old granddaughter loves this💕💕💕!

I heard Spike first pitched the female lead role to Vanessa Williams. Its hard to imagine School Daze without Tisha Campbell....she was on pointe.
Both Tisha and Vanessa had theatre experience at the time and could be triple threats (same as some of the other girls in the film). Tisha did wonderful, and Vanessa would have too. There was more than enough talent back in the day.
Honestly I think Tisha was the better choice. She had that round the way girl sex appeal and a sassy personality. Vanessa was more polished and groomed for beauty pageants. They picked the right lady for this role.

From what She said in several interviews...She was performing in Broadway musicals after touring with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre when she did this movie and the casting director from A Different World saw this movie which lead to her auditioning for the role that would become Whitley Gilbert!

@@edencrush2223 its still an issue sadly. However, they needed the weaves to prove the point. I don't think it was about their scalp being natural lol, that is the whole reason they are called WBs in addition to their other behavior traits.
I just noticed that the light skin side had a dark skin girl with long hair. I guess they found her acceptable because of her hair. The girls in this seemed like they had a lot of fun filming this scene and they all looked beautiful!
And how there was one lightskin girl with the darkskins side. Her hair was short, so maybe the lightskin girls didn’t accept her.
Yeah it was focusing on their texture how some girls have the texture of being "nappy" but it was like a natural look and how the somewhat lighter group had the trend popular wavy 80s look that alot of famous white celebrities had. But honestly they all are beautiful and better dancers than girls today.

This beautifully points out some of the effects of colonialism and colorism on our people. The singing and dancing, so pivotal to our culture is masterful! This entire production from the lyrics to the music to the dancers is the highest art. Such a masterful expression of our experiences with each other.
It’s funny how they have one dark skin person in the light skin team.
I used this scene when I was talking to the host of a Percy Jackson Podcast I used it as an example to explain why some of the demigods joined the villians side.

It wasnt just light vs dark because if you look at the group there was a dark skin girl but she had long hair. Sad as long as you had some form of euro-centric feature you were accepted.

This movie is the Black Grease. I love it. My absolute favorite Spike Lee film.
Wrong...this movie is School Daze. Grease didn't have these social issues nor a Stellar cast with that many talents in it that actually had careers 💯👌🏿🖤❤️💛💚
This is a masterpiece ! The singing dancing and energy is totally unmatched. All the ladies are so talented , beautiful and classy. One of my all-tine favorite movie scenes.

This scene is so nuanced down to the choreography! Notice the ensemble dances between the two groups is so dynamic, you have the fair skinned women moving a bit more gracefully while the dark skinned women are moving aggressive with hip rolls and stomps. It’s truly amazing the talent in this film!
You know what? As many times as I've watched this movie and this scene, I've noticed some of the nuances. But that one? I was so mesmerized by the dancing that I didn't notice the contrast of the delivery. Thanks for pointing that out! 🔥🔥🔥
I see the same jazz/modern movement from all the women in this piece. There is more ballet in the Wannabe camp.

This movie will forever be a classic
The lyrics, dancing, music all have a conversation with one another. This scene and Beat Street's - Battle at the Roxy are my two fav dance sequences.
The lyrics: Don’t you wish you had hair like this, then all the boys would give you a kiss.
Song and dance numbers in movies are often thrown in strictly for entertainment value. The rumble at Re Re's not only excels in entertainment and artistic value but it also delves into the heart of the issues of Black self-consciousness (good hair v. bad hair, light skin v. dark skin) to effectively drive home the film's key narrative theme. A perfectly crafted gem IMHO.
That's one of my favorite scenes from the movie.The choreography and music matches very well.Mr.Bill Lee did such a tremendous job to the song.Much honor goes out to him.

I was in elementary school when this movie came out but was upset because my older sister wouldn't take me to the theater to see it. After waiting a couple of years, i snuck and watched SD when it finally came on HBO. I was so ready to go to college, not just for the sororities but the full diverse experience and somewhat independence. This scene betweeen the Js and Wannabes is pure art! Now I'm going to watch the Gamma Rays sing " i dont want to be alone tonight" in the talent show.

that was a sight to see growing up in the 80's, having lived through it and to know the issues still exist. But, not as much, this movie made a tremendous impact on us, let's not downplay that! Imagine where we'd be and what we'd be doing today if these issues were never addressed in this way. Love Spike Lee! A true visionary.
The all star cast in this movie aside including Spike Lee's sister Joie, School Daze, had a lot of great moments. Madame Ri-Ri's and the Coronation ceremony featuring the song "Be Alone Tonight" are my absolute favorite scenes from School Daze. As a kid I would sing and dance to all the choreography to this number. Watching this now after all this time in 2024, the muscle memory recall feels like yesterday. The lyrics are poetic, poignant and on point. Always loved the line, "...don't you ever worry 'bout that, 'cause I don't mind being black" as it meant so much. I shall end with a "Wake Up!"

The most facinating thing about these dancers are that both sides are actually descendants of slaves and are amazing, fabulous and iconic!! Spike Lee did this!! This segment alone should have been on Broadway!! 👠👠

i can't think of another director with a catalogue of back to back iconic movies. She's gotta have it, school daze, do the right thing, malcolm x, crooklyn. School daze is a lifetime favorite of mine. i didn't understand it at the time but i couldn't resist the entertainment and performance throughout. And the cast was STACKED even down to the minor parts, Cassi Davis and AJ Johnson in the window. As i got older, i realized the themes and the importance of self-value, dignity, and insecurity that breeds competition where there shouldn't be any. Spike Lee has always been ahead of his time.
Also "I Don't Wanna Be Alone Tonight" is worth another watch. Jasmine Guy is stunning!
Watching this beauty and excellence and at the same time knowing this movie, nor this scene was awarded in some way is tragic.

I read in the trivia that Tisha Campbell didn't know what high yellow meant until she made this film. I first heard the term in high school when a classmate was talking about a girl.
High yellow is more my grandmothers time growing up they just called us redbone or yellow bone
I heard it as young as elementary (80s baby). It's like the Parent word for yellow bone
First time I heard it was when some dude called me a high yellow heifa' when I was nine. This movie came out that year so I guess this is where he got it from. Weird thing is that he was lighter than me. 🤨

I remember seeing this in the movies. Still so relevant today. What have we learned? Where have we evolved? Black women are we still divisive or are still fighting about hair and skin tone? Just something to think about. The change starts with YOU!
It will never change until people accept their features and stop making mixed race people their mascots. But still latto, Rihanna, Beyonce, Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj and now Ice Spice are the "black" representatives. Racism and colorism won out and will keep winning out.

If you look at Tisha Campbell's character...and the way the Gamma Ray's perform their song in those dresses...somebody in Destiny's Child camp saw School Daze...Beyonce's hairdo & make up always gave me Jane vibes!
It’s 2023 and we’ve taken these issues to a whole new level. Now we differentiate amongst ourselves by Hair type (2A, 3C, 4A, 4C….you get my drift!), Curl Pattern (kinky, coily, curly), Hair density and, let’s not forget, the obsession with Length Checks of our strands because there is this very real (and despised) deception of healthy, natural, textured hair called: Shrinkage. Now - We spend crazy money on products (finally) formulated for the needs of textured hair and we are beginning to truly appreciate and proudly showcase the natural beauty of our strands (no matter our age) and it’s unique versatility….Thank Goodness!! We still have some issues but we are definitely stronger. ❤️
