- Higher Learning is a 1995 American drama film written and directed by John Singleton and starring an ensemble cast. The film follows the changing lives of three incoming freshmen at the fictional Columbus University: Malik Williams (Omar Epps), a track star who struggles with academics; Kristen Connor (Kristy Swanson), a shy and naive girl; and Remy (Michael Rapaport), a lonely and confused man seemingly out of place in his new environment.

The Remy character was exactly how I imagine a person would become a school shooter. I think that might have been the best and most well done storyline of the movie.
I hated this film when it came out. The characters in this film where a bunch of cartoon characters. Remy was actually not very well drawn out
I always hated Kristen's plot. It was so unnecessary. And didn't really fit into the scope of the movie. Fudge was my favorite character 🤣🤣And I loved the end when he didn't smile for his picture!
The fact that that Busta yell is the reason I started watching this movie in the first place(cuz that part happened to be on the screen when i changed the channel) is still fckn HILARIOUS to me
I just watched this movie last night and absolutely loved it and couldn't help but wish there was more shows/movies surrounded by college life with multiple main characters with their own backstory most media is centered on high-school drama and tends to not interest me anymore
When Omar Epps' character was screaming, "DEJA! DEJA! DEJA!" I was like...OOOOOO, chile. He could've kept that! That stank on ice!🤣🤣🤣
Great soundtrack as well, especially the Raphael Saadiq song “all I ask of you “

I can't watch *Higher Learning* without acknowledging *Don't Be A Menace* when Ashtray and Loc Dogg was dappin *Malik* up for being the first one in the hood 2 go to college and got popped😅 it ain't funny but they actually got Omar epps to play his Higher learning Role as Malik so they was really clowning these 90 movies😆 but we know all the references. I also think Michael Rappaport don't like black ppl till this day. Thats sum great actin

Lol 29:31 yeah Tyra's acting was weak. Im guessing this was her first movie. I always cracked up at that scene how she repeats the "WHATS WRONG WITH YOU?!" line twice. Like she wasn't feeling it the first time she yelled it, so she yells it again. Then John was probably like f'k it I'm keeping the shot, we been shooting this scene all day. 😆

I do believe this was Tyra movie debut but....yeah they definitely should have cast someone else, her acting was pretty bad just so unconvincing and laughable, Omar carried all the scenes they had together.

I think this should be viewed in school to 12th graders! It touches on alot of points to college experience and I think it stands up pretty well today!

This was a good movie very emotional and deep for it's time and for a high schooler it really did make me watch my back going into college as a single woman at the time. The one critique I have for your commentary is that you kept calling Kristen's partner Jennifer Tilly lol but the actress that played her was Jennifer Connelly. Tilly is of Bride of Chucky/Bound fame. That's all 🙂

I’ve always loved this movie when I was a freshman in high school. I hated Ice Cube character Fudge because he was a jerk throughout this whole movie with Remy. Tyra banks can’t act but I still love her though. Kristen with her story was lame. Too bad Malik and Remy never became friends but I still relate to both of them and the Professor too. It’s also too bad Remy and Kristen never fell in love with each other the whole movie.
Yes I totally agree that would have been better if Malik and remy became friends and yes I agree Kristen and remy never met or had scenes together.

Great review, Higher Learning is a good film from John Singleton but not as good as Boyz N the Hood, turns out John Singleton wanted Tupac to play Malik and Leonardo DiCaprio to play Remy and he also wanted Sidney Poitier to play Professor Maurice but none were available at the time

That's why he wanted Laurence to have an accent lol.... Very interesting I could see this maybe not Leo but he's played a lot of interesting characters he'd probably pull it off even with him being so fine at that time lol

Great review! 25:02-25:40, yes, 'Soul Searching' is now one of my favorite songs. I remember hearing it, in the 90s. But, it first caught my attention in spring 2003(right before I finished high school) when I heard it on the radio. I tried to find it after that, but could not really find it, and did not remember the lyrics. I didn't know the name of the singer, either.
Fast forward to early 2010, when I watched 'Higher Learning' for the first time! And I finally find this song! Last fall, it popped back into my head and I found myself listening to it on the daily.

Tyra and Busta acting were not that bad. They were exactly what they were suppose to be. Every movie does not need to be award winning, Shakespeare acting to be a good movie or for the viewers to get the point and the white girls part was very necessary to bring up date rape and how some women may change to women sexualy after being sexualy asulted.This movie was deep and powerful on so many levels.
Fun Fact: Tyra & Busta was also in Halloween Resurrection

I liked this movie but it kinda came across as a TV movie of the week only with curse words. I get where it was going but looking back it's kinda corny. Even the skinhead gang is cartoonish compared to the gang of skinheads in American History X. But aside from the corny preaching, it's still a decent flick.
