    If it were me , I might consider getting rid of the slide out and make that tarp and room into a hot tent room. Set up a comfy cot and run your TV screen off the side of tent tarp. Then the back of truck is for supplies and gear etc.

      Yeah, that's actually my plan! I already have the stove so I'm going to make the stove jack next week and get a different stove pipe. I used to winter camp full-time in a 12'x14' hot tent but I want to be more mobile this winter so I'm looking forward to using this drop down room with a stove. I'll keep the slide out as it's easy to store stuff in there and love how easy it is to sleep just for one night. Thanks for watching ~ Brian

      @@OffGridBackcountryAdventures how has this worked out long term? Looking at doing something similar (tarp/room set up) of the side of my utility trailer so I can haul my atv, and have a quick camp set up. Did you stay in that room for the three days during the rain and stay dry? i was originally thinking about a roof top tent, but with a dog, that isnt going to be ideal. This side room looks to be a good alternative

    I'm thinking of modifying a tension bar, or even a seperate fame over the ARB awning to stretch a tarp over to help with the rain and more severe weather (i.e to act as a wind break for the drop down room)
    Do you think this would be suitable? Any suggestions for using the ARB in possible rainstorms were the wind might pick up, say at night? going to install this on a teardrop camper, but don't want to have to tear down at night if it's storming, and want an option to shed rain and set it up more securely for rain. Weight isn't an issue, so I could always replace the poles with steel ones I suppose...

    I have been wanting to check out Sedona so badly! Funny story, last winter I was part timing in my little 18 foot trailer that I tow behind my old 88 suburban and my friend and I decided to go check out Skooliepalooza in Quartzsite for a few days. We were expecting rain. My friend put her ARB awning and tent room up and forgot to drop one of the sides. I was going to mention it, but we got busy and I never did. Needless to say, the next morning around 6 AM I texted her to make sure she was okay, and sure enough, just a few minutes before I texted her, her awning collapsed. Luckily just one of the side arms broke and she was able to replace it. I wish I could put the picture on here to show the mess.

  • @stevecabacungan

    Hi, I love your videos. I have the ARB awning and room as well and my first experience with heavy downpour and gusty wind was really bad. It kept me up all night pushing the room top to keep the rain water out. How low do you drop down a corner without breaking the arm hinge to prevent rain water accumulation on your awning?

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Steve, I guess I never really thought about breaking the arm hinges. They've held up to 3 years of constant use so I would imagine it'd be okay to drop one of the sides of the awning to shed water. I don't think you'll end up breaking the arm hinge.

      Hey Rory, I tend to move around about every week. I'm thinking of adding a wood stove to the awning room so I can travel lighter and have a bit more flexibility. I've been spending my winters in a 12'x14' outfitters tent with a wood stove but it a bit of a hassle to move that behemoth all the time.

      @@OffGridBackcountryAdventures that's about the right size tent. They sell the titanium stoves that are light but expensive. Four dog stoves out of Minnesota sells them and I've thought about buying one.

    Would you be able to/attempt to heat this if you wanted to use this in colder conditions ? How much snow would this take before you’d be worried ?

    • @ModernMtnMan
      @ModernMtnMan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live right here in Denver and I’d love to do some winter camping this winter and some exploring but I just can’t swallow the $700-$1,000 investment they want for the canvas wall tents.

    • @OffGridBackcountryAdventures
      @OffGridBackcountryAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Brandon, unfortunately this really isn't ideal for winter camping due to a few factors. 1. The walls are extremely thin and wouldn't be able to provide the heat retention needed for very cold temps. 2. The walls are flat and the winds during winter can be extremely brutal. It's not uncommon for winds to reach up to 50mph which would tear apart this drop down room. 3. The ceiling is flat so you will get quite a bit of condensation dripping from the roof. With all that being said, I have winter camped in this during a snowstorm and it wasn't horrible. I did have to slope the roof quite a bit so the snow would shed alleviating my concern for the roof collapsing under the weight. It's doable if you have a little heater (something like a little buddy) or if you were to create some sort of stove jack to use a wood stove. However, for a great winter camping experience with zero worries I would suggest investing in a 4 season tent with a wood stove. Here's the one I use, it's expensive but well worth it. I've had winds up to 70mph at camp with zero issues other than noise which is to be expected with winds that high. You can set the tent up yourself without needing two people and it doesn't weigh as much as canvas tents. bit.ly/35u6sph
