ARB awning comment. Have been using a 2.5 x 2.5 in Aust for 3 years. generally ok but problem is if you use the ARB drop down delux awning room you will find that the awning room ( 8kg )tends to bend the horizontal swing out arms. We told ARB head office and manufacturing plant in Melbourne Australia ( where we live) about the issue and asked to speak to a technical ARB person. Unfortunately the sales staff at the Glossy Melb showroom say NO NO No way the poles bend ( despite have two bent poles of ours in their hands. Reluctantly they replaced them and when it a hAppened again we approached ARB in another state whilst on the road travelling with some very convivial feedback and got the same result excuses excuses excuses except this time they said 'stiff luck buddy' and no replacement so we bought more poles from them.
So we just STOPPED sing the Drop down delux awning room and put it into storage at the back of our garage and continues to use the awning .
NO PROBLEMS SINCE WITH THE POLES.. it is clearly apparent that the weight of the drop down awning is just a bit too much for the awning . We are about to travel again in late 2020 and may try to use the awning tent again and have now purchased two vertical poles to place under he awning arms about a metre out from the vehicle to support the swing out arms .
Over the last three years we have purchased thousands of dollars of gear from ARB. inc fridges, underbody protection plates , awnings, drop down awning tent rooms, spot lights, radios, snorkels, recovery gear etc etc.
generAl quality of ARB gear ok
price point is expensive but generally ok
BUT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WILLINGNESS TO TAKE A BIT OF CONVIVIAL FEEDBACK FORM AN ESTABLISHED CLIENT ABSOLUTELY LOUSY.

My 'pro' tips having driven 1000s of miles on dusty corrugated roads with the same awning (and a diesel jku)-
    1. tuck 2pegs up under one of the velcro belts when you role it away, that way you'll always have them and never forget to pack pegs.
    2. Add friction buckles to the velcro belts.
    3. Wd-40 that zipper, dust will kill it, takes 2min.
    4. Drill some extra holes in the spreader bar that is suspended between the two telescoping poles. Then add cable ties to the holes. They give you extra places to hang things and points to tie off tarps etc.

I just bought an ARB awning today and your honesty is refreshing about the awnings. I'm already in my box of nylon straps, sewing needles, d-rings, etc ready to do what you did. Appreciate the great suggestion!

Good stuff. I am about to install mine, think I’ll rivet a snap onto the Velcro(while it’s still new)at the point where it holds. I’ve found that snaps with Velcro works very well, sometimes it’s over kill.

Great review. I wonder if straps from bicycle toe clips would be long enough to secure the awning? Velcro is useless with long term use.

Very informative & helpful video. We will invest soon because we really need an awning! Will check out your other video on how you handle rain with this awning. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Finally got my Gobi on the Jeep and attached my OzTrail awning. It has a very similar build. Similar in that it uses the same lame velcro system. Mine isn't as bad as yours but I haven't used it as much as you have either. Thanks Mark!

Can you please do an updated review with all your MODs? Do you think ARB has taken your suggestion on the D ring idea for securing the awning to the side poles? Thanks Skillet

Great review. Something Ive noticed is that some people roll the awning up top over and some under over.... does this matter on the longevity and wear? Maybe over thinking this .....

Hard to disputes the pros and a few curious attachments derails and that reference to over tightened screws verses another type of superior removable hardware

I like the arb except they seem to have put out an awning that doesn’t have a ready way to attach to Yakima cross bars. Seems nuts. Does anybody have any idea how to attach the arb to round bars like Yakima makes?

Thinking about the ARB. This was very helpful. Looks like you did you 8X8. I am trying to decide which size. Came across a barely used 6.6X8 with the zip in room. Trying to decide if that will be big enough for 2 of us. Appreciate the review. Going to find other video with the accessories you use.

I have not seen the actual product. But from what I see from the video, where he is complaining that the Velcro is not suitable for the job I think he is wrong. The problem is that what they used is not Velcro, but a cheap copy of Velcro. If the straps were Velcro he would not have a problem!

Dude, and I’m being kind using that term to describe you, wanna keep this post “G” rated, ...you had a “Sewing Company “ attach that little bit of fabric onto your awning,...unbelievable,...I understand you are a Canadian, but over here in the U.S. we man up and do those things ourselves,...unbelievable!
