    i liked the part where he said "Once you get that brake caliper off you'll be able to pull this rotor off". He was lucky, it often takes a lot of hammering and sometimes heat to get rotors off.

    I’ve been dreading this project, really worried the ends of my axles are going to be pitted since the axle keepers have been bad, everything I’m touching is original.

      Great news, Those axles are tough, but best to check them before putting new bearings and keepers. Overall the job is not that hard. Do the deed and you'll have the power. Good Luck

    You do not need to take the spider gears out, and you shouldn't. Just leave the gears in place.

    • @ogsgarage7889
      @ogsgarage7889  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrong! Check your gears for shaft wear, chipped and broken teeth...always! When you have things apart check everything!! You don't want to put everything back only to find you have an egg shaped shaft hole or broken gear teeth.

    • @cloudoftime
      @cloudoftime 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ogsgarage7889 Not wrong! If there is no evidence of shards or broken or worn gears (you don't need to take apart the spider gears to added this, simply turn the shaft to check the various areas) then there is no reason to pull it all apart, requiring that it must all be lined up correctly again. Sorry, but this is just unnecessary.

    • @ogsgarage7889
      @ogsgarage7889  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong again! Worn gears do not always show shards of metal and you cannot turn your drive shaft around to check your drive shaft gears for egg shaped wobble. They are easy to remove and check. Highly recommend you do that. No reason not to it takes minutes. If you wish not to go at it at your own risk.

    • @cloudoftime
      @cloudoftime 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ogsgarage7889 I was able to turn my gears. You can check for wear when you do that. Everything was fine. Easy to inspect.

    • @ogsgarage7889

    Tried this but I pulled the seal out first. Then inserted the bearing puller and tightened up the nut with washer on the outside. However after a few whacks of the slide, the outside wall of the bearing failed and pieces flew out and the roller bearings were free to fall out. The metal casing of the bearing is still in there and will not come out with that puller style. Is there any other puller that will work? The inside wall is intact all the way around. I have tried the L shaped piece with the slide hammer but it just will not budge.

    • @ogsgarage7889
      @ogsgarage7889  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, As long as the puller has somewhere to grab you should keep trying to remove the chase with your puller. It could take a lot of hard whacks. As I mention in the video they can be tight and stubborn. Perhaps you need a stronger puller. There are screw type pullers perhaps you rent that might work for you. Let me know how you do.

    Great tutorial. I've got the mystery growl Right Rear. Question: The bearings run directly on the axle shaft right? What are the chances I'll have a bad bearing and not need a new axle shaft?
    I like the idea of just replacing the axle to be sure I'll get 'er done in one day, but I don't want to completely waste money either.
    Advice? Buy Axle or Find out when I take it apart?

    • @ogsgarage7889
      @ogsgarage7889  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Alan, The bearing does run directly to the axle and could possibly be defective. Chances of the axle being bad are slim unless the bearing was dry or damaged and spun scoring the seat. If the axle is not scored or have a lot of wear I would not replace it. If you check the bearing and it's okay check your spider gears for wear or play. I'll assume you have oil in there.

    • @alano2875
      @alano2875 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ogsgarage7889 Thanks. I'll give it a go. Plenty of oil. I'll get in there and figure it out. Thanks for the advice!

    Was that the problem ? I Have a noise similar but almost seems to vibrate like at 30 mph makes weird sounds going down highway

    • @ogsgarage7889
      @ogsgarage7889  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was the problem for me. Noises could be dry or bad bearings which could also cause vibrations at higher speeds. Mostly it would be in the front wheels. Still you could have more than one problem ranging from bad ball joints to bent rims causing the vibrations. Check your differential for oil and proper additive.

      Hello,
      It's called "Bearing Race and Seal Driver" You can purchase them at auto stores or Harbor Freight or purchase it on line. They range from 20.00 and up depending on how elaborate you want to get.
      The one I'm using is the Maddox MD10-1 Kit. Maybe you can get them cheaper used.
