      I don’t think Ringo necessarily knew he was going to die. I think he was very scared of Doc’s reputation and how everyone kept telling him not to have this duel with him but you can see in his face when he accepts and his expression while they circle each other that he’s still confident in his own ability and is doubting Doc’s. You can see he’s judging Doc by his cover, and thinking this weak, sweaty, and pale man cannot possibly be as good as everyone says but, of course, when the moment comes, he learns the hard way that all the rumors are true.

      I believe it's a reference to what actually happened to Johnny Ringo in real life--he was found shot in the left temple, mysteriously--they ruled it a suicide. Hence, "It was more than he could bear." And perhaps the "official" story that Wyatt and Doc told everyone after was that Ringo had shot himself.

    • @jackprecip5389
      @jackprecip5389 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@camoss3724 I disagree. Kilmer's portrayal of Holliday is the most fun, and quite enjoyable to watch, but it's almost cartoonish. Of the six major portrayals of Doc Holliday in a popular film (Victor Mature- My Darling Clementine, Kirk Douglas- Gunfight at O.K. Corral, Jason Robards-Hour Of The Gun, Stacey Keach-Doc, Val Kilmer-Tombstone, Dennis Quaid-Wyatt Earp), they are all good, but I think the best portrayal is also the least well known one, which is Stacey Keach as Doc Holliday in Doc from 1972 co-starring Faye Dunaway and Harris Yulin as Wyatt Earp. Keach's portrayal is by far the most human, and understated, playing Holliday closer to what he probably was, a loner and a drifter, as opposed to the mythological fast draw, cavorting social partier, and well groomed sophisticated killer that many of the others played him as. The movie Doc is also the only one that portrays Wyatt Earp closer to what he was in real life, which is more of a self serving sleaze ball. While the other movies have simply gone along with the mythology that Earp was a heroic good guy and law officer, in reality, most credible historians view Earp as a known cheat, crook, and not a real nice fellow. Only other depiction I recall where Earp was the "bad guy" at the OK Corall was in a Star Trek episode of all things. These choices to depict more realism is probably why Doc tanked at the box office and is largely forgotten, but if you want to see Doc Holliday and the Tombstone boys in a dirty, almost unfocused, anti-Western written as only a New York City newspaper man like Pete Hamill could have written, give Doc a try.

    This whole situation with Johnny Ringo & Doc Holiday was crazy , when Ringo was by himself & ran into Doc , it was like Johnny ran into one of his childhood fears , his face always looked like he knew Doc could blow him away any minute without notice & I think he knew that , but when he was with his friends , he acted like the tough guy around Doc & tried to show Doc up ,& that was foolish of him . I don't care who you are but sometime in your life you hear story,s about certain people bad or good & if your not friends with them you avoid them like the plague , & I think that,s what Johnny was trying to do with Doc until Doc confronted him then his pride got in his way .

    We’ve all seen many gunfights in the movies, but when Doc torments Ringo after the brain shot- “Come on, Johnny. Come on!” - that changes this scene, for me, from just another “good-guy-wins” gunfight to one of the most terrifying moments on the big screen. That’s just unvarnished cruelty in action and it adds another whole dimension to Kilmer’s superb performance.

Years later the docs xrayed him after he complained of cluster headaches and there it was- a pistol round lodged in his brain.

Doc was dying. Once a well respected educated business man. Dental I believe. Then he got sick. And given a death sentence. He said screw it. And became a gambler. In those days to a gambler it was to your advantage to learn how to shoot. Which he did. Doc never killed anyone that didn't have it coming. In a time when we settled our conflicts there and then. I lived in Glenwood Springs, Colorado where, in the Glenwood Sanitorium, Doc Holiday died. It is now an apartment complex. My good friend lived there and we would regularly hear strange noises and see shadows out of the corner of our eyes. The small graveyard where he is buried, is on the hill above the building, and it overlooks the town. Beautiful spot and super cool graveyard.
    Coincidentally, Kurt Russell lives about 30 miles away. Towards Aspen but in a tiny town called Old Snowmass. He lives there year round and is seen alot in Carbondale. He shops in the mom and pop stores. Loves to support them and is always friendly with those who recognize him. I did HVAC work and was at his place once and got to meet him. Spend couple hours after the job was done just shooting the shit with him. He showed me the truck he kept from the movie Overboard, with his longtime girlfriend, Goldie Hawn.
