Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday in the movie "Tombstone" offers an interesting lens through which we can explore the relationship between his character and the sephirot of Kabbalah. Doc Holliday is depicted as a complex and multifaceted individual, and his quotes in the movie can be examined through the framework of the sephirot to gain deeper insights. "I'll be your huckleberry." This famous quote reflects Doc Holliday's fearless and confident nature, as well as his willingness to take on challenges. In terms of the sephirot, it resonates with the sephirah of Gevurah (Strength), which represents power, courage, and determination. "My hypocrisy goes only so far." This quote showcases Doc Holliday's self-awareness of his own flaws and contradictions. It relates to the sephirah of Tiferet (Beauty), which represents harmony and balance between conflicting aspects. Doc Holliday recognizes his own contradictions but also seeks to maintain a sense of integrity within his actions. "It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds." This line further emphasizes Doc Holliday's awareness of his own contradictions. It reflects the interplay between Gevurah and Tiferet, as he acknowledges his complex nature while continuing to act in accordance with his principles. "All I want is revenge." This quote illustrates Doc Holliday's driven and vengeful nature, as he seeks justice for the wrongs committed against him. It connects with the sephirah of Netzach (Eternity), which represents determination, victory, and the pursuit of justice. Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday captures the intricate blend of strength, self-awareness, complexity, and pursuit of justice. never his match. His superior. Even Curly Bill knew it, evidenced in the "play for blood" run-in, it was the only confrontation between the Earps and Cowboy gang he broke up.
I also love that Doc said 'the Deadliest Pistolier since Wild Bill they say' and not the 'Fastest Pistolier'. He knew he had his number as soon as Ringo gave away his draw speed in this scene, something Doc didn't do.
@@Nomzai it sums up the twos relationship throughout the movie. Ringo the instigator and Doc the one who backs down from noone. Something like when an immovable force meets an unstoppable object.
And why did Doc Holliday have this ability? He knew he was literally a dead man walking thanks to advanced tuberculosis, as they had no cure at the time. The only treatment they had was for the sufferer to go to a dry climate, such as the desert, which is why he was there. And knowing he was basically a dead man walking meant he did not fear dying in a gunfight, and perhaps he was hoping to go out that way, as dying from tuberculosis is long, slow and painful. A man who does not fear dying is very, very scary, and Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday captures this perfectly.
@@russelmurphy4868, this is confirmed by Doc's last known words and its portrayed in the movie. Doc's last words were " This is funny " while looking at his feet. He found it humorous and unlikely that he would die without his boots on . He expected to be killed before TB killed him.
@@ashleywalls4097 Honestly i dont think the huckleberry line was the best either. I think Doc saying "I wasnt" was the most powerful line when replying to Ringo saying he was just messing around when talking about playing for blood. It was with that very reply, "I wasnt" that we actually saw Ringo get scared. Even for a split second.
@@genevandenham7999 Ringo is scared as soon as he hears Doc's voice in that Scene... and once again the line "I'm your Huckleberry" is uttered. But the best line in that scene is "Why Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave." The line "I wasn't" isn't as powerful as you think. Ringo knew he was dead when he first heard Doc's voice. You can see how he stops, pauses, and has this little look of desperation. Incredibly subtle and perfect moment.

The most iconic role ever!!! Val Kilmer will forever be known and remembered as THE Doc Holiday -- No one has ever portrayed Doc Holiday as powerful as Val Kilmer. The entire cast of this movie could not have been better.
Notice how answer "I am in my prime" made him untouchable that night at that pub.. untill the proper duel.. That words defended him there.. Shall he said he is retired.. He would have been shot for pure pleasure.. Because a duel with retired legend would always end up..with ppl talking.. You were lucky he was t in his prime.. But shooting a drunk unprepared legend in his prime would put a shame and bad reputation on his name forever.. People would talk he had to take him down by surprise cause he wouldnt have a chance with him in fair duel.. He kinda put a magic shield on himself by saying I am in my prime..
I know everyone creams over Val Kilmer, and rightly so, but the _entire_ cast really made these scenes memorable. Even the extras. Everyone’s acting puts you right there in the room feeling the tension as these two legends interact. Nobody drops the ball, everyone plays their part with such subtle perfection, and it stays that way through the whole movie.

To be honest, I think Dennis Quaid looked more sickly. He genuinely looked like a man who was physically weak and dying. And his cough sounded almost too real. Not too mention I've seen photos of the real Doc, one in particular that stands out in memory is one that was taken of him when Doc was 27 years old, the year bein 1878, and Quaid's resemblance to Doc in that photo is borderline uncanny. Not too mention too, Doc was known for having a volatile and violent temper when drunk, and I think Quaid exuded that well in his portrayal.
My favorite western of all time, and at 72 I've seen most of them, if not all of them. Val Kilmer brilliantly portrays Doc, capturing both his frailty and his strength. Last month, my 12 year-old grandson and I were talking about sports, and I stole Doc's line and told him "I'm in my prime." He responded, "Yeah, maybe 50 years ago."
My grandpa was in the navy in the Korean war, he figured his best chance was the navy. He was at the top of the destroyer flashing the Morse code light. I'm only a year younger than he was when he was at castle bravo. All I remember him saying is something about the film not picking up the colors
Val Kilmer did an outstanding job as Doc. What I love about his character and this scene specifically is his enormous level of confidence, he's like a force of nature lol even when he's obviously sick he still stands tall and speaks clearly and to the point. He isn't afraid of a battle of wits or a gun.
Diffused it? Shit he was straight making fun of Ringo and everyone else laughed it off. You see the stare down he's giving him while twirling his cup? Doc was daring him.

Well, the winner for best actor that year was Gene Hackman for playing Little Bill in Unforgiven, which is arguably the best Western ever made. Hackman was amazing. Kilmer wasn’t even nominated though, and, that is a tragedy.
We all remember how great Val Kilmer was in this film -- and for good reason, with zero hyperbole -- but I grow more and more thankful that Biehn got his opportunity to really shine as Johnny Ringo because he remains an underrated talent with a natural intensity few actors can match.
Michael is always very professional. I've seen him in so many shitty B-Movies where he was giving his all despite all the shortcomings of the movie he's in.
In that particular scene Val Kilmer is no doubt the main draw. But all the rest is really fantastic. That pistol exhibition of Johnny Ringo is the other draw for that scene. The script, dialogue, facial expressions of everyone is perfect as if it is happening on real life and not scripted. By the way i watched this movie in cinema during its screening, so i am happy to be one of those who has contributed to the success of this film.

Before production started.everyone. or most actors want to play a best/ role.etc Michael Beihn wanted doc holiday role.
While I do agree val has been the best so far I can't help but mention dennis quaid. His performance in Wyatt Earp is extremely good and he never seems to get the recognition he deserves as a great character actor.
Doc's genuine surprise by Ringo's knowledge of Latin was great, its then and there that Doc realized he really was looking at a mirror version of himself. That solidified his contempt for Ringo.
I wonder if he hated him because he was a mirror--or because he realized he was a real and present threat to his friends, now. The other cowboys were drunken, menacing fools. Ringo was extremely dangerous, and got his kicks by killing people rather than drinking. Doc was the first to realize that Ringo presented a mortal danger to the Earp brothers.
My favorite part is the expressions between Doc and Johnny. Doc perfectly replicated Johnny’s entire routine, while drunk, and suffering from tuberculosis, using an empty cup that is terribly unbalanced.
You can tell that Ringo probably idolized Doc and would have liked his approval in another situation. He wears the same goatee, knew Latin, and was obviously proud to show off his gun handling skills.

Oh - the modern version just needs to have some LBQTs, some obese woman, racial diversity, cross dressers - there is nothing stopping that from being a great movie or be partially historically correct - is there?
You don't need a trophy from Hollywood to be recognized as a prolific actor. Every time I see these clips of Kilmer I also see 1000's of comments glorifying his performance. That's the real "trophy." That's the actual "recognition." Lining in people's memories is what counts, not some piece of metal.
"Look dahlin', Johnny Ringo." I love the backhanded contempt of Doc extolling Johnny's prowess as a pistoleer in a manner that comes across so patronizing.
The funny thing is Holiday was watching his every move knowing that whenever he would see him again he would know his timing. Ringo didn’t stand a chance

Once in a while, a movie comes out and an actor plays the role so amazingly, you just can't imagine any other actor in the whole world matching the performance. Val Kilmer blows my freaking mind with this role.
As commanding and captivating as Kilmer's extraordinary portrayal of Holliday is, it must be acknowledged that a lot of that dynamic is due in part to the dramatic tension provided by Biehn's performance as Ringo. An incredibly compelling combination.
Agreed, Biehn is such an underrated actor and the level of insanity he conveys throughout this film is incredible. It wasn't the done thing in that era, but I have to wonder what Tombstone would be like made now as a mini-series with this cast, which wou,d have given more time for character development rather than glossing over a lot of what happened.

Fun Fact. The Doc Holiday tin cup slinging moment was spontaneous. Kilmer walked around the set with this tin cup for days, and last minute they put this scene together. Some sceenes can never be forgotten, and this is one of them.
I've watched Tombstone at least a half-dozen time and I finally realized how Doc twirls his pistol and then puts it in his holster after shooting Johnny Ringo at the "say when" scene... EPIC acting by Val Kilmer!!
I watched "Tombstone" the first time because I like westerns and heard it was a good movie (and it was...one of the best IMO). I watched it the next dozen times for Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holiday.
I love how Doc wasn't intimidated by Ringo's fancy tricks. He knew that all the fancy tricks and show didn't mean anything. A lot of people could have learned that. Being fast and deadly when it counted was what mattered. You could see that in their final showdown. Ringo knew then that his fancy tricks wouldn't help him.

It breaks my heart that Val will never talk again. He was a legend regardless of the role he played... Doc Holliday, Jim Morrison, Simon Templar, Madmardigan, IceMan, etc. Too many to name. My favorite actor, bar none.
It’s hard to describe why I like this performance so much. Holiday never lets his illness prevent him from being in his “prime” or from helping out his friends. Seeing him sick and dying really makes me sad for his character. Such a great movie!
Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday in the movie "Tombstone" offers an interesting lens through which we can explore the relationship between his character and the sephirot of Kabbalah. "All I want is revenge." For *he* is the bringer of death....

Val Kilmer defined the character. No "Tombstone" variant before or after can hold a candle to this "Doc."

That solidified his contempt for Ringo.
agreed...his stony expression conveys shock, and says a lot.
ຈຕ
Yeah, the only difference was he was a slightly faster version.
For sure but there was only One Doc

While these interpretations offer insights through the lens of Kabbalah and the sephirot, it is important to remember that they are subjective and open to individual interpretation.
Can we also take a moment to appreciate Michael Biehn for his portrayal of Johnny Ringo?

Some of Kilmer's best acting. Did a better job portraying Doc Holliday than I've seen any other actor do.
The way he said it you could tell he was unfazed by Ringo chiding him . . . he's like "I'll do you one better lol"

While these interpretations offer insights through the lens of Kabbalah and the sephirot, it is important to remember that they are subjective and open to individual interpretation.

@@Emmanuel-sb7tz "these days" in the case of Tombstone was around 1993. I don't think we were quite yet pandering to minorities and women at the oscars. We were getting close, but not quite yet.
I would say the entirety of the movie kept him from getting the oscar. I love this movie and all of the cast, but as a whole it is a flawed movie on a compositional level. There are cringe moments throughout. The creators were definetly go for style over substance. I think the academy recognized this and laughed this movie off and anyone involved with it.
I like it, but I'm not a part of the academy.
I know I’m slow but I just realized that the cup flipping was actually a genius response to their conversation in Latin where Ringo basically tells Doc that his best attribute is being a drunk. Then Doc mocks him by finishing his drink and executing the exact same moves with flipping his cup as Ringo did with his gun. Basically saying, I can drink and handle my weapons better than you.
One of the greatest Western I've ever seen. Val Kilmer is the best Doc Holiday in movie history. All of the casting was great!
