Another fun fact: the song Drift Away is connected to the song Everything Stays from Adventure Time. Rebecca Sugar wrote both songs based on a toy that she lost as a kid and later found. One song is from the perspective of her losing the toy and finding it(everything stays) while the other is based on how the toy would feel being left(drift away)
That’s awesome! To make a song about a toy and have it be so meaningful
i hope they continue AT reactions to get to that point.
Steven’s VA has been the same since the very beginning. He started out in the early episodes of season 1 having to do a bit of a deeper voice for the character because he was a kid, but eventually his voice changes and he starts doing a higher voice since his voice got naturally deeper. By this point he’s basically just talking normally

I'm not sure if anyone said it in chat - but according to Rebecca, hearing the news of Pink Diamond abandoning her caused her to poof from heartache, only to reform as her new form. Girl essentially died of a broken heart.

22:50 I really appreciate how Amethyst took the time to double-check with Greg & Steven about shapeshifting into Rose this time, unlike how back in Season 1, she did it to get reaction out of him and really messed them both up. It really shows how much she’s grown since.
So you guys seemed confused about Steven saying "my organic jacket" and it's never really touched on in the show, but he has mostly light based clothes now so they can adjust to his form if it changes, and that was his one actually cloth based jacket

"Mr Greg" was the test for doing a musical.
If you re-watch the intro where Steven is making his universal announcement, one of the places it shows is the garden, where you can plainly see Spinel's foot in the foreground covered in plants.
Steven Universe movie was fantastic. Great songs, new villain and the animation was incredible. I'm so glad you guys enjoyed it

It went full circle bringing memories of episodes while telling a new story. All in one hour and 10 minutes. Rebecca Sugar really nailed it!
Spinels from Steven Universe are a gem-type specifically created to be like jesters, their purpose to endlessly entertain their owners. Spinel in-particular was created to be Pink Diamond's own personal playmate.
Fun fact: in the birthday episode, where steven's afraid he wont grow any older, and then he shape-shifts to be taller, they actually use the same steven design we see in this movie and future :)

There's a little thing I have to say.
Gems can only permanently change their appearance if they get poofed and re-form.
Spinel's appearance before and after finding out, that Pink is gone is vastly different.
So she must have poofed in between finding out about Pink and her arrival on earth

I love what they did for the songs and narrative in this movie, *especially* a massive fan of one specific connection.
The movie starting with the diamonds serenading Steven, begging him to fill the void left by Pink in their lives on Homeworld. Spinel with Steven's help singing a song about finding new sources of love and happiness. And at the end these two perfect puzzle pieces can slot together, with Spinel being the 'new Pink Diamond' for the other three to enjoy the company, positivity, and energy of, and Spinel to have her new audience, White, Yellow, and Blue can be her new close friends to share laughs and fun with, her new 'Pink Diamond'. And the beautiful cherry on top was writing the aforementioned songs just right so that, here, at the end, the two songs could be FUSED together as a charming wholesome quartet. It's creativity made it one of my favorite Steven Universe songs, in league with other masterpieces like Love Like You, Stronger Than You, It's Over Isn't It, and We Are The Crystal Gems

Fun analysis about Spinel that a few other content creators caught was Spinel was widely inspired by old cartoons, the rubbery animation style like old Mickey. Very much reminiscent to the cartoons grandparents at that time watched their own children grow up with. So the reason the Diamonds loved Spinel was a reference to channels like Boomerang where old cartoons were played that tugged at the nostalgia of parents. Spinel was annoying to Steven (Pink's kid) but appealed to them (Pink's guardians, whom watched Pink have fun with Spinel)
Fun fact about "Independent Together":
Our main characters all have designated instruments that play in the background during their key moments. Steven gets strumming instruments (guitars, ukulele) and chiptunes (the video game music), Pearl has the piano, Amethyst gets percussion, and Garnet gets synth/electronic bass.
When Steg is singing the first verse, you can only hear guitars. Piano gets added to the music once Pearl starts singing. There are no drums until Amethyst & Pearl fuse, and Opal starts singing. The only extra instrument in the whole song is the tambourine.
You can also hear the background music change during each verse in "Happily Ever After" at the beginning of the movie.
Lapis and Bismuth also have instruments. Lapis has the celesta (like a high pitched piano) and Bismuth has drums. When they're talking to Steven on the warp pad during "Happily Ever After," the music changes when they speak. I have no idea what Peridot's instrument is, though.
A lot of people took leaving spinel as the worst of the worst of pink diamond, but theres so much to it I feel people dont really analyze. Yes pink isnt in the right for leaving her the way she did in the first place. But steven singing with spinel and making it clear he doesnt want to be the friend she seeks and the way pink acts when she was given spinel....spinel was a gift to her when she didnt want it. She wanted to be independant and one of the other diamonds. And having a 'toy' thats like a goofy little sibling around made her feel like she couldnt be one of the diamonds like blue or yellow. She stopped being silly and childish (at least around the diamonds), which led to the boredom that led to her going to earth. Have you ever met someone you became friends with out of chance? Not so much that you clicked? And you just knew you shouldnt be friends? I feel the point of spinel and her story is to emphasize a big aspect of the main show. Change and relationships. Not everyone changes for the better. And sometimes relationships dont click. And dont work. And people can be hurt because of it. Spinel needed to find those who loved her for her and pink, when she was finding herself, was not that. Again its not excusing the way she did it, but I can understand WHY and that spinel needed better anyway.
I find pink/rose to be a fascinating morally grey character who shows that even as much as you change sometimes your past will still come to haunt you or those around you. Whether or not you tried your best to be different or change for the better sometimes mistakes cant be taken back.

I'm not really sure if someone already told you or even is Rebecca confirmed it but I'm pretty sure that Spinel these are representation of Borderline Personality Disorder, that would explain the "psycho" of her. First of all BPD people have experience an abandoned trauma in childhood (just as Spinel with Pink) this mess up their development and make them unable to self regulate their emotions, jumping between love-hate, also making them really insecure and never letting their guard down about the next moment they are gonna be abandoned (just as Spinel after Steven ask her for stop the injector)
Also without an actual reliable supporting web and therapy, BPD jump between unhealthy relationships looking for fulfill their hollow (just as Spinel with the Diamonds at the end of the movie)
There are more things but I guess I explain my self, right?

There’s a pretty upsetting undertone here-that I’m not sure if it was explicitly confirmed or not-but Spinel still looked like her initial self until she saw the Homeworld broadcast of Era 3. Keep in mind, that broadcast happened at the very beginning of this movie. What I’m getting at, is for Spinel to have changed her appearance so drastically from when she saw that broadcast to when she arrived to Earth, the pain and betrayal she felt from Pink’s actions suggest that she poofed either from stress…or making herself poof, and reforming with her tear streaks. I don’t think it’s even that far fetched of a theory, because grief from betrayal can really destroy people and do irreparable damage sometimes.
Yeah apparently Rebecca confirmed that she basically poofed out of heartbreak nd reformed into her upside down phycotic state

It is a great design choice that Spinel as a Gem from over 1000yr ago and long forgotten in Pink Diamond's past is based on Rubber Hose animation with her rubbery limbs and the Mickey Mouse ear effect with her pigtails.
Spinel is such an interesting character.
Just from her design, motivations, and how her threat is resolved; what I enjoy the most is figuring out what she means to The Diamonds.
So in Steven Universe, if White Diamond is the Progenitor of all Gems, and Blue and Yellow are... desendants(?) of white;
You can simplify White as the Creator/Mother to Blue and Yellow.
If that is the case then Blue and Yellow can be considered Sisters while PINK is the child of the family; considering how the other Diamonds saw and treated her that is not far off.
So then WHAT is Spinel in this metaphor.
I always viewed Spinel as a sort of abandoned Child left behind by Pink as to not taint he innocence during the Gem War, but after everything why didn't Pink/Rose go back for her?
Logic in that Spinel would reveal who she was?
Shame that she left her alone for so long?
And when the Diamonds sing that Spinel was Pinks?

Steven Universe movie release on my birthday september 2nd 2019 , so I feel it like a gift to me, I been following this beautiful show since I was 16yrs. Also that year, 2019, was my worst year of being alive, I was facing a really cronic depression and that years I was on my lowest point,to sad, to broken, to angry, and I didn't know why. So this movie hit me right on my feelings, and I understood Spinel's feelings very well because I was feelings something similar.
Ngl when you think about it, Greg may have indeed funded a large percentage of little homeworld's construction. It'd be impossible for him to actually spend all 10 mil of his money during Mr. Greg, and there wasn't anything else he could have spent the money on besides maybe helping buy the materials for the beach house after the diamonds attack. Also considering there was no one to pay, as Gems don't take money, all he had to buy were the materials. Heck, he didn't even need to buy equipment or machinery with how technologically advanced they are.
I can't believe they made it to the movie!
After seeing the movie, watching the opening theme to Steven Universe Future amused me thanks to the bait and switch at the start.

Well, at the end of the day, Spinel is another Pink Diamond victim who only had...what, a couple of hours to deal with the trauma of realizing she was abandoned for nothing ? Because Pink wasn't happy with the colony and faked her own death to escape her role. Like everything, she never took time to fix her mistakes and it makes it hard to forgive her, even if she changed for the better by becoming Rose Quartz. And she can no longer defend herself so it's even harder to deal with what she left behind.

Spinel is easily the most tragic character in the show imo. Even moreso than lapis
I say both have it comparable. Feeling betrayed by those they trusted, abandoned, and trapped for thousands of years.
2 personal things for me:
1) This movie would've been way better if it wasn't a musical. I did still love it but I feel like I would've appreciated it more if no one sang out their feelings and instead all the raw emotion was just said, or hell, was just shown with emotional music that isn't sounding forced.
2) I'm not sure if I'm saying this correctly or not so feel free to correct me if anyone wants to, they should've gotten more freedom with making this show.
