    Im not an expert on emotions but i think the emotions have more than one meaning. The mothers lead emotion being Sadness doesn't mean she is sad but perhaps she is Compassionate, very empathetic and a emotional person. For the father maybe instead of angery he could be a blunt, authoritative, and possibly strong-willed person. For riley, since joy is her main emotion, we can see that Riley is a optimistic person that tries to be happy and see the bright side of things. Again, these are my thoughts. They may not be accurate

    I’ve seen a lot of people who are like “bing bong can’t die that’s stupid. If someone asks Riley if she’s ever had an imaginary friend won’t that make her remember him?” In all the memories we see of Bing Bong playing with Riley she’s a toddler. It makes sense that he would simply fade from her memory considering how young she was when she played with him.

    • @a_coronado
      @a_coronado 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +64

      I'll probably add that for bing bong to exist, riley would need to actually believe he exists, that way she could remember like oh yeah i once had an imaginary friend but i don't believe he exists anymore

      @a_coronado True. I was thinking to myself, "Do I have imaginary friends when I was younger?" Me being an imaginative person feel like I did have imaginary friends. But when I tried to remember it back, my mind was empty.

    • @Kiraiko44

      I have a lot of secondary memories from childhood, aka things I don't remember myself but I was told enough by family members that I know they were real or happened despite not being able to actually remember them myself. So for example when I was a toddler and I was really fussy and wouldn't sleep my parents would take me for a drive and lay me in the back seat, I'd be passed out within five minutes. I don't remember this myself but both my parents and an aunt have told me about this so even tho I don't remember it myself it's like a secondary memory, I know it happened but I don't have a direct memory of it. Riley would likely be like that, if her parents told her 'oh yeah you had an imaginary friend named Bing Bong' and told her about things she did with him, she'd probably accept it and 'remember' him but the memories themselves are gone

      This is so true! There are a ton of things kids randomly remember that you’d never expect them to, but there are also plenty of things they completely forget. All of my family claims I had a best friend for two years in elementary school, but even with images of the kid and stories told to me of him and I, I have absolutely 0 memory of him at ALL. Kids just forget things.

  • @ravenm6443

    I feel one of the reasons Bing Bongs death feels so hard is because likely, without necessarily thinking about it, he represents all the memories we’ve lost with no ability to remember. If the idea of death is that loved ones live on through memory, then true death is being forgotten.

    the way i sob at the realization that you can have happiness and sadness together and the control panel shutting down, this movie shows what depression is like so well, it’s literally like just being empty and the things that used to make you happy don’t make you happy anymore. it’s really sad

  • @katyanderson1413
    @katyanderson1413 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +21

    i think one of my favorite things about this movie is how it represents toxic positivity. joy constantly is trying to look on the optimistic side of things, and sometimes that's not the answer. for example, the scene when bing bong's wagon gets thrown into the pit and he's crying. sadness is able to make him feel better, but joy couldn't, as well as the scene where she's trying to teach sadness how to be happier and she doesn't understand why sadness isn't seeing things the way she does. and then, slowly, throughout the movie, joy begins to rely on sadness. from her knowledge of long term memory, to when she asks her if there's actually a station in imagination land (instead of just blindly trusting bing bong like she did at first), to eventually putting sadness above herself- "Riley needs you". joy's realization that without sadness, there cannot be joy, was such an impactful moment. they just handled it so well, and i will forever love this movie and how they handled emotions the way they did.

  • @michaeladundon
    @michaeladundon 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +39

    Joy is the perfect way to explain toxic positivity. This film is just so clever and I'm obsessed with it. Can't wait to see the 2nd one with the new emotions as Riley matures.

    • @ruffboiALT
      @ruffboiALT 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

      And to explain it without being like "this is BAD and you're BAD if you do it!" Being positive is a good thing, but you need to allow room for other things too, and it's okay to have negative feelings - that's when you need to rely on the people who love you, y'know? It's so well-done.

    The panel turning blue and yellow when both Joy and Sadness created the bitter-sweet memory is such an impactful scene for me. As I grow older I see the joy in sorrow and allow myself to feel it openly and i've never been happier.

    Don't worry about crying, I watched this with my 9 year old and I cried way more than she did as I was hoping she'd respond more. I know it takes a bit more realization to be able to understand this movie. It's more for us as adults remembering what it was like to be that young, whilst trying to be able to understand the emotions your child or a child may go through.

    37:13 This scene helped SO MANY PEOPLE understand that depression isn't the opposite of happiness, but rather the absence of all feeling. There's nothing but empty numbness and darkness, amd loneliness. That's what makes it so devastating. And you can't suppress one emotion without slowly suffocating the rest of them. You don't really get to be selective over what you feel.

But we moved from the north to the south for his job when I was 10 or 11 and the changed destroyed me. It all happened so fast when we moved though but once we were there and I started school everything just went to sht. Mine took longer to get worse and worse but immediately the differences made me just. miserable and depressed, missing home. Not having my friends and losing all of them especially my childhood friend sense 6 at like 14, I resonate with this movie to fkin much man. And it came out around the same time.

    This is how psychologists think our mind can work in similar situations. For Riley she can now start to develop empathy and acceptance about the sad things in life and she knows she can get comforted by others. Some don't have that luxury and i must say the dad, the dad needs some therapy. I think that the role of sad is major thing for most women since female dominated work is most often about being there for others. Hopefully Joy can pop up in their life on occasion as well as sad should be more prominent in Rileys dad.

    when I watched this movie for the 6th time I was like "....imagine the inside of kids heads in war-torn countries. Joy is probably not a thing and their memories are all full of fear, sadness and anger".
    Good thing reincarnation is real and they can have a chance at a better life much like Riley's.
