    Our Pavlovian cat could distinguish between the can-opening sound of her food and any other can-opening sound.
    The can would not even have to be opened!
    The of the opener on the can was all it took; she would be trying to climb my leg before the seal was even broken.
    I miss that cat, always brought me mouse heads.

      Our cat would come running if anyone opened the drawer in the fridge that had sandwich meat in it. He wouldn't bother if it was one of the other two drawers.

      I think shorter cans would "tink" with a higher pitch. Other cans would have a lower pitch. With my old Maggie preferred prey was anoles, geckos, and frogs. Somehow she could find the elusive grey tree frog, the frog you hear but never see. I have never seen a gray frog except when Maggie brought one home.
      Best prey to bring home was the katydid. Way bigger than the frog and the hard exoskeleton gives maximum play value. Frogs die in five minutes. Katydids last fifteen! Also had the occasional mouse or bird. The mice and birds would be partially eaten under the kitchen window. Only fun prey like frogs, lizards, and the amazingly unfragile katydid were brought back intact for home playtime.

      Very familiar with that phenomenon - Pavlov simply didn't have the benefit of the electric can opener, which would have been a total game changer! One electric can opener & a crate of canned tuna... the possibilities are mind boggling!

    • @splitpitch
      @splitpitch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@My_Fair_Lady 'nothing wrong with that'- nothing wrong with sanitising the process of experimentation on animals? Nothing wrong if you want to continue to live in ignorance, i suppose.
      'They' is the people who do experiments on animals, starting with early researchers like Pavlov, Watson, Seligman in the early days. Countless thousands in recent years with product testing, brain ablation tests, and cognitive testing.
      Of course, it is true society as a whole benefits from such research, and many individual humans would not have the effective treatments they do without those trials. Not all experiments are for noble causes, much is for useless cosmetic products. People should be aware of what kind of experiments are done on which products. Unless they simply don't care, of course.

    • @splitpitch
      @splitpitch 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@My_Fair_Lady yes, but for those you do see a problem with cats being exposed to chemicals, such activities should not be glossed over. perhaps it is the fault of the consumer- prefering ignorance to the full knowledge of what if=s done for our pamper products. For example- you write about the cute kity's eyes weeping and being irritated- THAT is the cosy illusion, they are tested with various strength chemicals, and, like i said, test to destruction- until it's eyes are just ulcerous sores and ultimately dies. Not just the one animal, but hundreds per product- statistical information is not much use without a good sample size.
      I'm not sure what you mean about a martyr- the animals are hardly martyrs as they did not choose their fate. But yes, our society is great on hypocrisy- myself included.

    • @splitpitch
      @splitpitch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@My_Fair_Lady i wasn't talking about being ok with the testing, I was talking about making people more aware about what actually goes on in such experiments.
      But now that you mention it,. a lot of people are not 'ok with animal testing', but I'm sure you knew that. As for getting good data, a lot of the information obtained from animal research is not always relevant to humans. That was learned the hard way with the animal tests involving thalidomide in the 1950s.
