    We headed to the KTM USA headquarters in Murrieta California to go over some maintenance procedures for the all new 790 Adventure & 790 Adventure R. In this video we start off with changing the oil.

    Great video, thank you. One comment, 10nm on the oil filter cap seemed too much. I checked the owners manual and it indicates 6nm

      When in doubt, definitely go with what the manual says. We did this at KTM's shop in California with their service people and went with what they instructed. Thanks for the comment!

    Very helpful video. When I filled the oil, the sight glass was full of oil, even when on side stand. However, after running the motor, the oil level normalized to 1/2 sight glass (perfect). Mentioning here because it was not mentioned in video and not mentioned in 890 OM/Repair Manual. Also torqued my filter bolts to 10nM. Lesson, read the comments before performing the procedure. Thanks again man, very helpful video -- appreciated.

    Great video. One note: The owners manual and repair manual of the 2021 890 ADVR say to put some medium loctite on the 4 front bolts of the skidplate. If this was not the case for previous years, maybe KTM found out bolts were missing after people rode offroad a lot and fixed it in their manuals 😄.

      A little blue threadlocker is never a bad idea for these bolts. We prefer Stuck Nutz as they invest in keeping backcountry riding open to all.

    Just checked with a dealer. They want about $700 for the 9k service and $1300 for the 18k service. That's about $2k every 18k miles or about $.11 cents per mile. So if you ride 200 miles on a weekend, you'll pay about $22 towards the service, or about another tank of gas. Something few sale people will mention. Excellent video though....

    Excellent job. I am really debating on buying a 790. I own a 2019 F850GSA which I love and took from Miami to Thailand -- 20,000 mile ride last year. But my next trip -- Miami to Cape Town, South Africa -- I would like to shed some weight --- Hence the 790 Adventure. But biggest issue I have had is the KTM reliability. I worry so much about KTM's breaking down -- or having some stupid nits. I travel around the world and BMW's never break -- and I always see KTM broken. I am not a BMW fanboy -- in fact I want the 790. What experience do you have with reliability with the 790? Do you think its safe to take with me in the middle of absolutely nowhere in Africa? Not kidding. Thanks.

    • @UPSHIFT_ONLINE
      @UPSHIFT_ONLINE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have had excellent luck with our 790. But we also pretty much tore it down to the frame and put it back together with proper grease and loctite etc. We also tuned the suspension and went through that tip to tail. The 790 is a more performance oriented machine and a little higher strung for sure and that could possibly contribute to reliability issues if you aren't mindful. But reliability hasn't been an issue for us on KTM. But you just never know what's going to happen out there.

    9300 miles oil change in all riding conditions? Off road ,daily high traffic usage and hot weather conditions?

    • @UPSHIFT_ONLINE
      @UPSHIFT_ONLINE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 9300 mark is for a full service. Oil change intervals are 3,000-3,500 miles. If you are riding a lot of hard dusty offroad miles, be sure to check your air filter often and make a judgement call on oil. If you have been feathering the clutch a lot, running extremely hot etc... it might be smart to change oil sooner.

    • @UPSHIFT_ONLINE

      It was a relatively new bike with 680 miles if remembered correctly. It was time for the initial oil change to get the break in oil that comes from the factory out of the bike. After that, you want to change the oil every 5000 KM / 3000 Miles. Every 15,000 KM / 9,300 miles you want to do a full service.

      Yes, I thought this was a super-simple oil change. No removing tons of plastic to get to the bits you need. The only thing is the circlip pliers recommended to take the oil filter out. But since you won't be using the filter again, as mentioned, regular needle nose pliers should be fine. It's not like the filter is jammed in there...
      You can probably do this in 15 - 20 minutes. Well done KTM!
