- "Chronicle" is the newest and possibly one of the most intriguing additions to the found footage genre, following a group of 3 teenagers who suddenly get super powers. But with great power....comes dead uncle Ben....or something like that....

The three main characters were supposed to represent the three types of superhuman. Matt wanted to use his powers to help people, and was therefore a hero. Steve wanted to use his powers for fun, and was the antihero. And Andrew used his powers to hurt people, and was the villain.
Yeah actually.
Joshua Deck Steve wasn't really a antihero.
Joshua Deck no Andrew hurt people because of his constant mental and physical torture from his father
And his mothers condition
QuiteDaPlayer_ And thats how villains become villains
Anand Zorigt lol yeah.
Two years later and Chronicle is still the best found footage movie I've ever seen
And that really says something about Found footage movies.
agreed.
***** I have yet to see End of Watch but I've been meaning to because I just found out Frank Grillo is in it
Well said my friend
Far Far Khokhar it is exactly like an anime movie like akira
My favorite part of this movie is as follows:
"I am the apex preditor..."
"...What?"
FLYING BUS SMACK
Actually if u look closely at the scene the bus said out of order
Crystal Pelepchuk
OUT OF ORDER or OUT OF SERVICE!?
Oh out of service lol my bad
I was about to say "Who was the Out of Order sign for then" in that case but at least now we know *The Apex Predator* isn't SO bad he won't search for an empty bus to hurl at his opponent(s)...well aside from tha driver anyways!
lol
chronicles is perhaps the best way to learn how to write a backstory of a villain.
+TheGoldminor or an anti hero
He a bitch
Just finished the movie.... I am now sad. It was VERY good! But I am sad. I wanted Andrew to be happy in the end SO badly.
it did leave an impression but even now about a month after I still don't know how i feel about the ending
LavenousForever if you liked this you should watch akira it pretty much inspired chronicle
I know right! I felt the same way
Right. It was exactly like Akira. Both movies are excellent in their own right though.
***** Yes, the video itself is spoiler free, but if you went into the comment section expecting there to be no spoilers, that's your own fault. I'm sorry if something was spoiled for you, but you shouldn't expect the comments to be spoiler free. You will have a lot of things spoiled for you if you do that
One of the few Superhuman movies that actually shows what real people would do with superpowers :)
And I would love to see a sequel and a director's cut version of this movie.
Inflec I recommend you google for "Chronicle 2 Script pdf." The screenplay Max Landis wrote is very interesting.
Cosme McMoon Link?
+Cosme McMoon - I'm a year late on this but did see both the director's cut and the Chronicle 2 script. Too bad it will never be made.
I know it didnt exist 4 years ago, but The Boys on prime video is also a good representation
it wasn't his step-dad, it was his dad...
+Holly Roxy which makes it even worse
Janryll Isurita yea ikr
+Johnreel how ?
MateMa Q because it's his own blood child that he's treating that way. That makes it worse than if it was his step-child.
Meh... i don't really think so. no point to debate here if you dont have any step dad experience.
I got so attached by the characters that by the end of this film i felt pretty bad for them and cried... :(
He a bitch killed he's best friend
@@alaacharaf_ well then you must have liked how the movie ended at least
@@cavaughngrace1488 yep
I liked how dark the movie got. When people think about getting super powers I don't think they really think about things going badly and the power potentially going to their heads etc. So I like that Chronicle was about this kid (who the audience feels sorry for and would want to see have superpowers to protect himself) slowly turn into a villain
He a bitch exactly
The Black guy always has to die...
I like mortal kombat too.
Dusk vex and Jazz in Transformers
Notice how out of the 3 the 1st one to die...(say it with me now) is the black guy!...See this is why I would suck at horror movies I'M BLACK!
devineggins4 XD
Better start saving up for a plane ticket to Mexico!
mrprotoman145 you fucking spoiled it for me
Sorry, but I stood up and gave a standing ovation when the main kid beat his father up.
Oh, you're one of those people...
McMagic15 please explain
PeeJay Torres I don't like it when people clap or stand up at the cinema. At least while the movie is still playing.
McMagic15 I watched it at home
PeeJay Torres Should've mentioned that.
Favorite Super Villain origin story: The Joker in The Dark Knight. Not knowing an origin into someone that demented and creepy is scarier than knowing...!!!
I agree to the fullest extent
Ashley Bottoms it isn't an origin story, is it then?!?!
HOLY FREAKEN CRAP! THIS MOVIE IS UNBELIEVABLY AWESOMELY CRAZY AMAZING!!! I-CAN'T-EVEN!
He is doing the new fantastic four movie, you gonna watch it?
TheDeathwish91296
Of course. I don't get the people that won't. It's a superhero movie from a good director. Whatever problems you have, throw them out the window.
*****
:'( Anyways, it is undeniable that Fox forced themselves into the creative process and undermined their director at the same time. While no one can really know for sure how much each is to blame, we can't say it's fully the director's fault. And you can kind of tell with the severe tonal inconsistencies in the film - Chronicle was very consistent. So, yeah.
+Abraham Lincoln I just watched this film and IMDB gave it a 7
+Abraham Lincoln rip
I loved this movie, and i still do. The only known weakness Telekinesis has is the limitation of the persons mind. And the movie shows it thoroughly at the end of the movie. Andrew didn't put up an energy barrier force field, or ki shield around himself, like he did against the officers, or at least just behind himself, because he didn't consider his cousin a threat in the moment he was releasing his rage. Had Andrew had a mind of complete awareness he wouldn't have died, but in order to pull this off, he would have been extremely paranoid. To have a mental awareness so strong and keen that you would even hold your own family, his cousin as an enemy. Andrew's defenses would have been undefeatable. It can be argued that his body was in a weakened state, so he couldn't have bern that strong. But ehat dismisses that idea is the fact that despite his body being in a weakened state, Andrew was more powerful than ever in his telekinetic ability. The ending is sad, but i think his death was for the best.
Andre is a bitch
I love this movie, towards the end I actually cried because of what happened at the end. One of the things I like about this film that it kinda has no happy ending like it's not your typical super hero movie where the protagonists ends up being protectors of the city but they destroy part of the city and end up having the troubles because of Andrew being to far out of his limit.
just saw it the second he killed steve i lost all sympathy for him all that power and he wasted it
Kira
He never killed Steve. They were in a lightning storm and he got hit by lightning. Although he did took responsibility on his death and tried to apologize.
***** didnt he direct the lightning at steve? not purpose but still
Kira
I didn't see him do it.
He's a bitch best movie ending
"They're on to me." XD
Very original movie. The portrayal of teens is outstanding, and what they do with powers.
The plot just makes it so much better.
The director said, "If highschool boys got superpowers, they wouldn't save the world, they'd mess with people." And damnit, if that isn't more true.
And evem then the three boys all represent the roles of superhumans. Matt wanted to help people, superhero. Steve wanted to fuck around with it, antihero. Andrew was going down the path to hurt people, supervillian.
5 years later and chronicle is still my favorite movie
Andrew guided the lightning to steve, subconsciously I think.....maybe
He's a bitch
I don't know why you think the flying doesn't look real,I mean its look like they are carrying themself with their telekenasis and that's what they are basiclly doing, its more like levetating then flying.
the special affects were just not that great, i couldn't help but feel i was looking at a sky view with people edited in on it.
has nothing to do with how their flying looked, that's just my opinion though.
This movie is awesome. I wanted Dane DeHaan to win in this movie. His character has one of the crappiest life ever put on screen, the tragedy of villains is most of them arent really evil theyre just pushed too much when they only want to be left alone. Like the Symphony of Destructions lyrics says "you take a mortal man/ and put him in control/ watch him become a god/ and peoples heads a-roll".
He a bitch tho
The only 2 found footage films I can safely call good are this film and Cloverfield. If those films were shot traditionally it would have actually taken away from the film.
I just finished this movie after been wanting to see it for three years. Holy crap. What a rollercoaster of a movie.
technically this isnt a found-footage movie [SPOILER ALERT] because there wasnt any footage to be found. the first 30 minuets of film was destroyed when andrew dropped his camera while they escaped from the cave. the next hour of film was destroyed in the gas tank explosion and the next 30 minuets were shot by random civilians. so technically the film is just shot with an ameteur camera-ish style, but it is NOT found-footage.
It was his dad.. Not his stepdad..
Which is worse.
Jeremy your movie reviews are always spot on man. Honestly keep up the great job.
I just watched this movie again the other day for like the 20th time and it's such a great movie. I gotta disagree with Jeremy on one aspect...the flying in this movie looked more exhilarating than any flying sequence in any movie I've seen thus far and that's including a lot of Superman movies, especially Man of Steel. Great movie and highly recommended.
I KNOW, RIGHT??? I've sometimes just placed my phone against the window and filmed the streetside view during a boring car/bus ride and rewatching the footage with some of that frame rate drop and everything - that's how the flying looked. Like real, raw vision.
Chronicle is one of my favorite superhero movies of all time. It is such a great tragedy and I felt realistically captured what teens would do with superpowers.
Just watched it today July 26 2019, and definitely one of my favorite movies of all time
Watching it tomorrow with a few friends. Chronicle is my favorite movie and I hope they come out with a squeal.
I really liked this movie but at the end I couldn't help but feel the story was a rip from Akira. Substitute Tetsuo for Andrew and Japanese biker gangs for Highschool. I know a lot of details are different but it followed the same story arc. The dynamic of characters finding superpowers and not really knowing what to do with them was the same too. Chronicle felt really fresh though because of the found footage take. Both movies are excellent in their own right.
Iif chronicle got a sequel, improved the found footage stuff, brought andrew back(idc how),and added more people with powers(and an explanation) then it'd b a kickass villain saga
It's getting a sequel, don't know if Dane Dehaan is coming back though
He's a bitch don't bet him back
Chronicle is 1 of my favorite movies of this entire decade
Hey Jeremy Jahns you should review Akira or the new DBZ movies
I only got to watch this movie today, january 2024 and, hey, Jeremy Jahns (looking really young) made a video about it! Great.
Its live-action found-footage Akira
The angel, the devil and the fallen angel
I just watched this movie and, uh, god, that was something. My friend called it "the worst movie he's seen" but I saw a generally positive review consensus, and it's really all that it took. And it's set in my hometown of Seattle, and I really wanted to try out this found footage genre.
I don't know about my friend, but BOY, I was in for a ride! That was IMMERSIVE! I could relate to quite a bit of it and the whole realistic atmosphere of it all just washed away all the fantasy and fiction within it, and just plugged me into what felt pretty damn real. Now, the third act really fell apart in my opinion and the movie went slightly downhill narrative wise after Steve died but the excellent acting made up for it. Loved this movie. Mental rollercoaster.
***** apparently
I like how he did the telekinetic thing instead of his usual punch at the end....
ah, this helped me decide which movie I'm going to see tonight. Thanks Jeremy Jahns!
Definitely in my top 3 superhero movies of all time. TASM, Chronicle, Man of Steel.
it sucks they never made the second movie like they were supposed to it got cancelled and from what I read it would have been epic
Just got back from seeing Chronicle for the fourth time! I went to see This Means War and when it was over I was leaving the movies and saw that chronicle was starting in 15 minutes. I ran up to the counter and got a ticket. I loved this movie as much as I did when I first saw it! Can't wait until it's out on Blu-ray!!
10 year old video. Same exact vibe as now. Love it.
Review Akira!
I like the joker's origin story because it is multiple choice.
dude your the best at reviewing! subbed
I remember being pleasantly surprised by Chronicle. I honestly hardly knew anything about it and me and my friend just pulled into the theater passing by because we were bored. We're both big superhero fans and I like what Chronicle did. After we got out we were talking about pretty much how we'd screw around just like they did. I really don't enjoy found footage type films but I think Chronicle did it just right and it was a cool take on superhero flick.
2018?
If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to bend all four elements, especially earth.
There are more than four elements
Four MAIN elements.
There's no such thing as main elements
shadowstar darkstar HYDROGEN. OXYGEN. NITROGEN. And earth.
Did u really just say "earth"
That Death at the end, Gruesome. Can't get it out of my head
Hey, did you know that in the Lego movie, the main character touches he's the red block, he has a flash back/trip. It actually pays homage to the start of chronicle. #themoreyouknow
favorite origin story... Spawn...
Ew
Idk y but I came here after seeing his Valerian Review
The ending broke me as a person. I cried nearly every time I saw the movie.
The first thing Jeremy says in this video immediately made me think of Infamous
Review Akira dammit!!
Reminds me of Akira
YES
It's actually based off akira
+Liv Bionic it doesn't feel like that it was based on Akira...
+gursimar singh the filmmakers have said they were inspired by akira and added lots of details from it into the film
Liv Bionic the movie is inspired and there are similarities but this movie had a totally different tone also much weaker than akira...
My first jeremy video... the nostalgia
You're kind of right. Basically, my theory is that they wrap a body-tight yet completely flexible field around their body. Basically they have free movement, while being able to float and repel gravity.
Underrated movie
I want to find that glowy meteor rock thing they found so I can do all this shit too. I'd probably be a hero though.
DONT FUCKING LIE
+Malachi Zacker Actually Max Landis, the writer confirmed that the thing they found wasnt a meteor. It was a ancient life form, that existed on this planet almost immediately after its creation. In current age they live near the core, but they dig upwards to feed. They feed by emitting sounds/electromagnetic waves that lure their prey towards them. Kind of like mind control. Thats why the kids found it, because they heard it. they would have died, but the life form itself died of old age just when it was about to absorb them. because the kids were now affected by those electromagnetic mind control waves, their brains had changed. Thats how they got their powers.
He said that once one of those thing appeared in the middle of a town, and ate all the people there. They are not that rare, but people dont survive to talk about them. His vision was really dark. Fox did not like it to be so dark, so they hired a new writer for the sequel though.
***** First, that's awesome. Second, there is a sequel?!
Malachi Zacker Well kind of. They are planning on making one, but it has a different writer and director. So basically a cash grab, because they did not like how dark Max Landis got with the story. He created the story and he should be allowed to finish it, rather than have someone else bastardize it
***** exactly. It is his story he should make it how he sees fit. I honestly feel like it could have been darker had he wanted it to be.
Chronicle is the live action version of Akira.
One of my favourite films ever, seen it in cinema and bought it on Blu Ray
You should check out the writer for the movie explains the power origins on youtube video
The plot for this movie is very similar to Akira, an anime from the 80s
dude with the akira reference, you sir are great
Ok now I have to see that movie
Andrew Ryan Its fucking amazing!
newland pencilnut I literally watched it right after I watched this review. Such a kickass movie.
Andrew Ryan Its seriously one of my favorite movies ever created!
This movie truly fucked up. It sucks you in at the beginning and then goes very dark. I can't bare to watch the ending of the movie again. If it ended on a good note. I might've enjoyed it more if it did but then it wouldn't have as big an effect on me
Well the point of the movie, from what I think at least, was to show how someone with these powers can turn evil even though they never were before, it's like a super villians origin story.
No. It was messed up because things hit the fan so fast. And in a very sad way
***** I don't think he was saying anything bad about the movie just that it got dark.
+leonardo lavado but shit Hits the fan really fast when you're talking about superpowers, I don't get why it would make the movie bad if it gets dark and doesn't have a happy ending like all mainstream superhero movies
By messed up I mean sad or depressing. The movie is great. To make things clear
dean dehaan underrated actor man. and michael jordan did well too it being his first rolezor.
jeremy: they're on to me
me: ahhhhhhhhaha
Saw Chronicle for the first time 10 min ago and i can’t believe i missed this movie back then! Netflix man when you’re bored just watch someting and sometimes you find something great...
Go to movies I like is Chronicle and power in Brightburn Arnold. Those two movies made me feel like that’s how superpowers will be in real life.
*This movie was INSANE imagine what he could do now with 2022 technology*
one of my fave channels on youtube
Andrew had the most potential of any of them. Had he lived, we would have seen his powers grow at an exponential rate..
The whole realistic use of powers like, having fun and getting money with it reminded me of Jumper. Loved this movie way more though.
That was a great review!
Chronicle is one of my favorite movies of all time, right next to Scott Pilgrim vs The World, simply because i have never seen anything like it. I could go more in detail here, but i'll just leave at, for me Chronicle is... Awesometacular (applause)
I thought the ending was pretty good. A little predictable, but I love how the final guy left just wanders the world now trying to figure out what he should do with his life. I also love that the camera makes it to that place they talked about.
Can you tell I haven't seen this in a while? haha
Agree or dissagree, but I feel like the movie on purpose plays on tropes so you feel where the story is going. But with the modern superhero landscape in mind you think to yourself: “they would’nt go there. You feel fear all the way through about what you know what’s about to happen next. You know Matt and Steve are truly great guys with great intents for Andrew. But you also know that Andrew is destined to fall corrupt under his newfound powers. His home situation+ his introvert nature leave him choice than collapse under his newfound feeling of power and invinciblity. I truly believe this is one of the most underrated movies in terms of directorial style and character building. Really a masterpiece.
This movie nearly made me cry in the end.
Its really sad. But I want to see a Chronicle 2.
I really liked chronicle mainly because it took a very realistic take on what someone with superpowers would do. I honestly could buy someone turning into a boyscout and saving every person they see. That's why I prefer anti-heroes.
JEREMY!!! why do you keep getting me pumped for movies that takes ages to come out in my country?!! Chronicle comes out here in Denmark the 19th of FUCKING APRIL QQ
I just rewatched it. The climax still hits like a ton of bricks. It’s such a good, tragic payoff.
on a spree of watching all his reviews
it's like when they made paranormal activity it was made as a low budget film but they made it look like something that actually happened. i just hope that if they make a sequel it won't feel like a wear-down of its previous one.
Jafar from Aladdin. He isn't a bad guy to begin with. He spends all his time and effort trying to manage the kingdom of Agraba. Spends decades learning the arcane arts to help. And when the kingdom may potentially fall, he expects to be offered the marriage. As a reward for his dedication and achievements as administrator of the kingdom.
But is rejected by an incompetent Sultan because Aladdin shows up and is cool. Literally that is the only reason the Sultan rejects Jafar. Because Aladdin had a badass intro. I think that would make most people snap
thanks, now I'm gonna download this.
Grade for this movie: 7.3/10
Good storyline, script, and characters. But Andrew's character is too dark and a little evidence why he turned out to be a mad machine. Matt helping Andrew's powers over personal issues is a little repetitive.
Yeah you're right. People always say "I would do all this good shit with super powers." but most people would not have the strength to control there anger and would probably lash out and hurt people they did not want to.
I'm pretty sure he killed the first two. He said, when they were playing with Legos, that you have to feel like you're pushing them together. When he did the gun thing with his hand, it's possible that he imagined a bullet. The one he threw into a windshield could have bled out while he was unconscious from the glass. The third one, in second thought definitely survived that. The last guy I don't know about. Andrew could have slit his throat, but he might have survived.
Just picked up chronicle yesterday and just finished watching it for the fourth time! I frikin love this flick.
the feeling after watching Chronicle and then having to go back to your ordinary life...
The ending hit me pretty hard in this movie
I also thought that Chronicle was a "Buy It On Blu-Ray"-caliber movie. That ending was one of my favorite all year. What it even more worth the money I paid for it was that this was a movie that I really went to see just to see a movie. I found the idea a little interesting, and Act of Valor wasn't out yet, so me and my friends (who also enjoy 'Murica and action) decided to see this found-footage gem. I really like how Andrew just falls down a rabbit-hole of evil throughout the movie.
I get the reference. Nice one, man. "Akira" is one of my favorite movies.
I saw this when I was 4 and I kinda want to see it again
I loved this film, compared to my my friends who were so bored they took several trips to the toilet to waste time. The scenes between Andrew and his dad hit hit hard.
Andrew talked about how he always wanted to go to Tibet one day, earlier in the movie.
Agreed. I'm glad they pulled it off well!
Just watched this and this is the best origin story movie because it really is more from the perspective of the villain rather than the hero. I was thinking Magneto's origin story when I saw it.
this is the only movie ive seen in a while that made me shed a tear when he dies at the end the amount of emotion the others show is just overwhelming i hope others agree
this is how i found jeremy then i clicked on another video then another then another then i subscribed
