    Andrews character felt so real. This wasn't really a super hero movie it was a "the quiet kid gets actual telekinesis" movie and it was really well done.
    I think anyone could predict how the movie might end asoon as the powers are discovered, but that only added to the tragedy for me.

    That "Dramatic dolly shot" sin is actually one of the best parts of the whole film.
    It shows how obsessed and dedicated he is to making a movie, that he pretends to be asleep, but you can actually see him moving the camera dramatically in the security footage! If you watch that scene you can see the tripod and camera slowly start to slide forward.
    He just became obsessed with documenting his greatness and giving a narrative and trying to tell a story. It's when you become certain that yeah, some of the filming before was a bit ridiculous and it was on purpose. Like the final fight, he grabs every camera he can! He wants to filmed, he needs it. It validates him.
    I need to rewatch this one...

      Agreed. I remember seeing this movie when it was new on a whim, (I don't watch movies that often, least of all in the theater), and really enjoying it, but more or less forgot about it until I started watching Cinema Sins videos and hearing him reference it from time to time. It's one of those movies that actually has some depth and focuses more on telling the story than just hitting a "movie moments" checklist, yet it's rare to see anyone talk about it or even remember it......

    7:16- The characters do have a form of invulnerability, provided they anticipate an attack and focus their power to protect themselves with an invisible barrier. This is shown early in the film when the three are learning about their powers and Andrew stabs a fork into Matt's hand, yet it bends without breaking the skin. Andrew clearly says, "When things are gonna hit you, as long as you're ready, they will not hurt you because of the barrier". This is how Matt and Andrew survived the thrown bus and crashing through buildings among other things in their city fight, because they had time to react. However, when they are struck without time to react, such as by the lightning that killed Steve, the barrier doesn't activate. That's why Andrew was damaged by that street lamp he didn't see and how Matt was able to stab him with that statue from behind. He was distracted by his rage, not paying attention.

    • @tomtucker9426
      @tomtucker9426 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The creator of the movie said Andrew could not possibly control the lighting, it was meant to stir conversation, so when Andrew said he didn’t do anything he really didn’t do anything it was a legit freak accident, the one guy literally goes up there to tell him it isn’t safe

      Is it canon Steve didn’t know he could protect himself? When Andrew was explaining it Steve was zoned out recording the lady outside. Because of that he died from the lightning, if that’s canon that’s some hella details.

    • @Justmyhandle
      @Justmyhandle ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@alexvaughan1056 As far as I know, yes, it appears to be consistent with what's shown in the film. It's possible that a powerful enough attack might break through the barrier, but it was never established or implied that this was the case when Steve was stabbed. There was no precedent set & confirmed for the barrier being broken earlier in the story either. Everything I've seen leads me to be pretty certain that the barrier is based on reactivity and does not activate automatically or independently of the character's will..

    Funny thing, Andrew's Dad was ORIGINALLY going to be killed by Andrew ripping off all of his other limbs, much like how he did to that one spider. The filmmakers however didn't put it in believing that the scene would've been too gruesome.

    • @MichK777
      @MichK777 10 ปีที่แล้ว +143

      Interesting! But still: while that may have been a prudent decision, it was a poor one. It would have been a pretty neat thematic repetition for the dad to die the same way as the spider. Perhaps they should have found another way to kill the spider/dad so that the methods coincide!

    • @junk3996
      @junk3996 10 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      MichK777 ya that would have made the spider killing scene have relevance, but since they decided not to kill the dad in that way the spider scene is just out of place and irrelevant. and the attempted killing of the father was also horribly misplayed, as pointed out by cinemasins.

    • @XaadeTheBlade
      @XaadeTheBlade 9 ปีที่แล้ว +153

      Strattex They don't make themselves stronger.
      They use their powers so that anything that smashes into them is really smashing into their telekinetic barrier.
      It takes concetration, so it's not automatic.
      That's why the statue thing works.
      He's focused on everything at the extreme of his range: cars, bullets, buildings. So the inside of his barrier contains him and the statue. Statue is free to spear him.
      Besides...
      While he can "move" the bricks of the building around him with the forcefield, he did not move the ground out of his way, so he went from Xmph to 0mph instantly.
      This is why we have seatbelts and airbags in cars during wrecks. The idea is to give more room to decelerate.

    • @GenuineMedicBear

      You know it's too bad that Disney decided to get rid of EU from the era of the movies but decided to keep the prequel trilogy, seriously a lot of fans would have loved for that to happen and Disney wouldn't really even have to recast many characters, they could ask pretty much all the actors from the prequel trilogy to come back and all they'd have to do is write a good story and make some improvements to a few characters, honestly any problems with the characters were in the writing and directing, not the actors just being bad.

      that's the point. How they got the powers is not important to the plot. Did you really want them to start going into some Native American curse mumbo jumbo or whatever? The point is they have the powers; I think the sense of mystery as to where they came from just adds to the movie. It's not making it this big thing, so you're confident not knowing the answer. I admire Chronicle for being one of the only movies to have the guts to intentionally leave out the origin story

      ***** Their invulnerability, as it is explained in the movie, would still not protect their insides from the impacts they sustain from the rapid acceleration/deceleration. The flying is acceptable because it is explained in such a way that makes it plausible within the realm of the movie. Their invulnerability is explained in such a way that makes deflecting forks and bullets plausible, but is not explained in such a way that would account for them being completely unharmed when their brain is bounced violently around in their skull.
      To be honest, I thought the same thing as you when I heard that sin. But, Drew is right. When it comes to smashing through buildings and whatnot, their outsides could be completely unharmed, but their insides would be mush.

I'm lucky enough not to have such a shitty home life but his social problems (isolation and bullying) I've dealt with that kind of shit. It's like when you make a mistake but you don't know how to fix it and more keep getting piled on so you just get super depressed and stressed out. Couple that feeling with grief over his mom and Steve along with his abusive father and telekinesis... expect a big blow up. What Andrew really needed was his dad in jail and to see a therapist or something... poor guy. =( don't get me wrong I'm not excusing his actions but if he'd had the right help before hand the ending wouldn't have happened.

    Max Landis, the writer, said he wanted one of the plot points of the sequel to be about discovering whoever put the movie Chronicle together and why. Who found the footage? He's not expecting the studio to have him write the sequel, but he has great ideas for the Chronicle universe

Given how their way of flying was to also cover themselves with it and move themselves, they had their shields up. That's how they survived it. Both sins are bogus.

      Found footage implies found footage, it's that simple. If this footage wasn't found then there was no point filming it that way in the first place. With "The Blair Witch" it's all filmed on one camera so it makes sense that someone found it, but this was unnecessary. Cool but unnecessary.

      If that was the case it wouldn't be called :found footage." That's just stupid to put a movie in that category and then say "It wasn't actually found though. I think that what you're mainly not getting is that even if the director didn't say it was found, it was found because we are watching it. We don't know who found it, but because it was found we can watch it. If it was never found we could never watch it. The footage was found no matter how you try to twist it because we are watching the footage. So, no matter what, a found footage movie is a found footage movie.

    Everything Wrong With "Everything Wrong With Chronicle"

    3:04 Explaining why the father is abusive is a bad thing? Should he just be nothing more than an asshole without any reason? +1
    3:42 Having a character say a joke someone of his age would realistically say is a sin +1
    3:58 Andrew suggests using their powers, but they tell him it's already fucked up enough and are afraid he might just make shit worse. +1
    4:05 I'm pretty sure they tell Andrew to stop recording multiple times but he just kinda ignores them. +1

    4:52 Having beer bottles around a home with a drinker is somehow unrealistic +1
    7:17 If you watched the movie, they explain how they can use Telekinesis to basically shield themselves to a certain amount, that's how.
    7:27 How is him using the power he's had the entire movie to impale Andrew Deus-Ex-Machina? That's like saying wolverine's healing factor is Deus-Ex-Machina. +1
    7:28 When did going to mountains become Andrew's hobby? He said he wanted to go there one day, that's not a hobby. Sure, in one part of the movie Andrew and Steve fly places with their powers, but that's not a hobby, that's using your new superpowers to do whatever the fuck you want +1
    7:42 He has telekinesis, wouldn't be to hard to find Andrew's camera and just take it. +1

I've never seen "The Wolverine" but in their review there's a part when they say "Wolverine straight up tries to murder a dude *ding*" I don't see how that could possibly be seen as a joke, and if it's not a joke, it doesn't make sense because they're basically saying its a bad thing that Wolverine is acting according to his personality?

Fuck special effects when I can't see the thing because I'm getting so annoyed because I'm tired of not seeing everybody in the conversation and the fact that the twat who's holding the camera never does a good work of doing so. There were no problems like that in the movie...you could see everything that you needed to see. As for "not seeing everybody in the conversation", that's not always needed, you can tell who's talking by the voices and who you saw in the establishing shots.

    My one objection is that I don't think Chronicle is a "found footage" movie. Yes, the POV is always through a diegetic camera, but there's no conceit that the movie itself is something someone in the world of the movie actually assembled for us to watch. I think it was just supposed to be an excuse for unusual and possibly more "intimate" POVs.

    • @Fatboyftw32

      "there's no conceit that the movie itself is something someone in the world of the movie actually assembled for us to watch"

    • @jkjpcds
      @jkjpcds 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm so glad that at least this guy gets it. I get the cinemasins are supposed to be funny and all but the movie never claimed to be found footage at any point. Certainly more of a stylized way of shooting which did later allow them to change viewpoints later on in the movie to various security cameras, etc. Even when they did shots at the end from no camera within the scene, I wasn't bothered because it also served its purpose for that time. One of my most enjoyed parts of this movie was the approach they took in shooting it.

    • @Wonder2win
      @Wonder2win 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The writer or director stated in an interview that the was in fact not found footage but pov. At least some people understand that because a movie is viewed by the audience through the lense of a character's camera , it does not make it found footage.

    Remember the part with the fork stabbing force field trick? that's how they survived the impacts. They divert some of their consciousness into maintaining a telekinetic shield around them to protect them from harm. During the movie it seems the shield really only protects them from impact and, if the force is great enough, the shield only reduces the damage. That's why andrew could survive the gas explosion, but still got knocked out. It's also why...Matt could impale Andrew ant the end, Andrew was too focused on fighting the cops to keep his shield up all the time.

However, if you were doing something else that required all your focus, somebody could run and punch you in the stomach and you wouldn't flex your abs. I have no idea if that's what the writers thought about when they wrote the scene and the movie, but it fits pretty well with what happened.

    I think the whole found footage idea doesn't apply to this movie. It's not like it's all found footage but rather is being viewed live just through different vessels. Like, you, the viewer, are trying to watch this, but to make it realistic you're experiencing it through a camera, then security footage, and then a phone. It's like everything is happening live and you just need a way to see it without the traditional viewing style of a movie.

    This one was bad. Not the movie but this video... Seems like half the sins are bitching about the "found footage" and as to who has it or not at any particular scene. Which means the movie is actually good. But I like watching this channel specifically because you point out funny and ridiculous things... Despite people's requests don't do it on good movies if you have to be reaching for straws.

    • @tylerclemons1778

      KeijiMaeda86 I think people are getting tired of telling people that this is all satirical. Also this movie was terrible. If your gonna do a found footage film you need a good reason to have some found footage. That's a legitimate problem with these types of movies.

    • @LibraGamesUnlimited
      @LibraGamesUnlimited 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      KeijiMaeda86 Well, IF you're going to do your movie as found footage you really should think it through and know who is filming everything and why. You also can't do dramatic zooms and other professional camera shots when there's no one to do them.
      I also don't see a real reason why this movie had to be found footage at all.

      Dead End Maybe not in that someone found the footage and watched it but yeah characters were carrying around cameras and filming everything for poorly defined, vague, reasons and it got in the way of the story.
      I could kind of see if they started filming themselves when their powers started and maybe filmed themselves testing their powers and whatnot but a lot of what they were shown filming made no sense and the video is right that filming little girls in a public place is going to get in trouble. Also, yeah a pharmacy is not going to have any of that due to privacy issues.
      All and all the movie would've been better either switching back and forth (filming most of it normal with interludes of them documenting their powers and testing them) or just being a normal movie.

      well electricity is an organized flow of electrons. and one of the most important rules of it is that the amount that comes in, comes out(errr that's what she said?). therefore, they need some source to get the electrons from, and a place were they will go. so you need a battery. and a "reason" for the electricity to flow. i'm not an expert, but yeah, science

      Nicholas Reffin Considering what the found footage movie is about, we can just assume the government is watching it, like in Cloverfield, or it's being watched by someone who stole the tapes and is watching them, like in Paranormal Activity 3. It's rather interesting to think that just, watching the movie alone, adds a bit more plot/mystery to the story the film is about.

    • @Statalyzer
      @Statalyzer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      " It's just a film told from the perspective of actual cameras."
      Which needs to just die as a technique. It's a regular movie, but instead of showing you good viewer camera angles, they show you angles that are only supposedly from in-universe cameras. That adds nothing to a film, it just means they have to waste time inventing bullshit reasons to have an in-universe camera in every scene.

    What the hell was the point in all that 'found footage' bullturd? Three reasons why just using a normal camera was better idea:
    1: Nobody brings a camera everywhere they go.
    2: It removes the bullcrap that two people are constantly glued to their video cameras.
    3: Would have made for a much better film overall with background scores, no shaky camera movement and better final fight scene.

    • @DarkCyberElf
      @DarkCyberElf 10 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      dlweiss I felt like they highlighted one of the real, significant problems of this movie: the found footage element. It is, once again, not used very well, even for a movie that is half-decent. Whenever I see people complain about CinemaSins failing to compile a list of viable "sins", I simply can't help but state this: THE POINT IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT, NOT FOR ACTUAL ANALYSIS. These people wouldn't have nearly the following that they do without a little lighthearted sarcasm, sardonic humor, and biting (yet not necessarily correct) criticism. If they just straight up tore a movie to pieces, no matter how hard they tried, they would simply not have the viewer population that they currently do. Want an example of someone who puts in twice the effort and has twice the talent but has half the subscribers (if not less)? YourMovieSucksProductions. If he had the upload frequency of CS, he might have long since surpassed them, but unlike them he actually gives a shit about actually tearing a movie apart from the seams and seeing what's left (since he clearly has studied the art of film-making and proper methods of exploring it in criticism).

    • @MrBeastknows

      A ton of the sins for all their videos (except for movies like transformers, that are that awful) tend to have either extreme nitpicks or just stupid stuff to be funny, like how crying in a superhero movie is a sin. ***** Well any objects not controlled by telekinesis would be subject to those as well. So that's a decent start, but I'd add that they could create telekinetic barriers around other objects. Also other factors like possibly shoving an opening through body barrier. Then there's the way bullets and bullet vests work that allows for force to be absorbed but that can't block that force at a specific point. Unless we're inside a character's head hearing their thoughts, we really wouldn't know for sure though.
      Really it's strange that lightning was part of their powers as well as it'd take a lot to grab something the human eye can't see and can't be felt otherwise. There's also a logical chance that the lightning was mere chance unless the character felt their powers do something.

    I don't get why so many people seem to bash this movie for being a "found footage" movie (even though it's not exactly a found footage movie, but more on that later). Within the first few minutes, it is explained why the main character bought a camera: he tells his abusive alcoholic father that he will film everything he does so that his father can not hurt him anymore. If his father even tries anything, the video evidence would go straight to the police. He is also an angsty teenager who eventually started filming everything as an obsessive hobby. I'm sure we all know someone who was obsessed about something and absolutely *had* to have it in every aspect of their life. I really liked how the camera wouldn't just stick with the main character; instead, it would jump from his camera to someone's phone, security cameras in stores, news helicopters, etc. The only time any footage was ever "found" in the entire movie was actually at the end when another character leaves the camera (which probably belonged to the main character) in the mountains and someone would probably find it. Actually, a lot of things are explained in the movie. It's just that people either don't pay attention or they usually come in to the movie biased against it.

      +The Smoking Skull Unless you think of it in a different way, as a new subgenre of the found footage genre. Instead of viewing it as "Oh someone found this footage and stitched it all together", think of it more as you are watching it as it is happening, as with most movies. It is using "found footage" style, but the way it is shot, as when the people are filming him with their phones before he smashes them, seems more of a as it happens type thing. You, the viewer, are all cameras viewing what is happening before that cameras death. Reposting myself on the same thread but I thought I had a good idea.

    I swear he finds EVERY LITTLE THING that can be told as a "sin" this was a good movie, does he like sitting in his room watching movies all day and saying what's wrong with them?

      Jesse Barrera you do realize that's his job right? He's said multiple times he loves movies but when he "puts on his sins hat" he nitpicks things that wouldn't even really be nitpicks anyways.

      Jesse Barrera On a fun note: the whole channel is satirical, it's a joke review channel. Emphasis on joke.

    One of the biggest problems with the sin about the bus and crashing through shit is that it is possible for them to survive that. That is why there is the restaurant scene where Andrew shows how he can create a barrier around his friends hand, and then attempt to jam a fork into his hand, but it only bends the fork. Basically they survived by doing that same thing around their bodies which protected them. Also, as mentioned in the comments, Andrew didn't get hit by the bus therefore the cameras he took were still there. As for finding the first camera that got buried, it's a found footage film. Maybe someone, possibly Andrew's cousin, dug up the camera later on.
