- Max Landis, wrapping up his panel at Comikaze 2013, decides to explain how the kids in Chronicle got their powers. And alludes to what would have happened in the trilogy if he stayed on board. Worth a watch (contains some explicit language).

This makes me depressed, we could have three great chronicle movie's by Max and now he is just a fan of his own creation. It sounded like chronicle was going to get even more deep.
Really? To me it sounded like it was going to go completely rubbish...he was actually ridiculing the idea of a saga.
***** I agree that a typical Hollywood trilogy of Chronicle would be garbage, but in the hands of Uptomyknees it would be very interesting. I think Max is the type of writer that would really subvert the superhero trilogy genre. In general trilogies devolve in quality, becoming poor copies of themselves. That said, I would pay to see the movies as Max pitched them, and I think he would have a lot of fun commenting on and sending up the genre that his movies are forced to exist in (by the studio, marketing types, and the public at large). These guys are not superheroes in the same way that early Hulk wasn't a superhero. They're just regular people struggling with powers they never really wanted or asked for. This allows for a lot more leeway in how far a character's moral compass may swing (like Andrew's), and makes sequels less predictable. Just my two cents. Thanks for watching!

It's probably because of some big company taking over the rights of chronicles, so he couldn't continue making the series how he planned, so fanfiction, the only place where he could do that, even if it's not 'official.'

It's sad to think that movies like chronicle or district 9 that have original idea's still don't have a sequel, yet films like transformers keep on going, or how we just keep getting unoriginal remakes and reboots.
Sometimes the best endings are the ones that are left unanswered and let you decide
I know this is a very late reply to your message but I wanted to add my insight. If you're curious the reason why shitty movies like transformers keep on going and good movies don't is because the masses don't care about a good story. The masses care about flashy flashy colorful explosions and guns and quick fast entertainment in your face. Take a look around TH-cam. All the successful channels create content directing in this attention grabbing, please the masses style. Is it a bad thing? Absolutely. It's because of this that good storytelling and I mean GOOD storytelling has died.
Ok i get what you're saying but district 9 is a bad example because that director has done a couple more movies with similar topics (using scifi to investigate apartheid in south africa and other race and class issues)
ZiggyZ I’d like to add/ refute on that. It’s not necessarily what the masses what. What it is, is that the masses don’t know what they want. Their opinions are swayed based on how they’re sold, and not necessarily their merit. People think it’s big budget stuff because that’s what they’re most exposed to, and thus they develop a sort of “illiteracy” when it comes to movies. It’s not that they’re not smart enough to tell good from bad, but most don’t try to dig deeper than what is presented to them.
Two words, safety and money.

I was really impressed by the story too... but what amazed me is the fact that he had to say at the end that those organisms aren't real. I tought "of course they aren't fucking real! Who the hell are you telling this story too? Kids?" Then i saw comments like yours and now i understand... and also, i understand there might be small kids watching... so..

this is why i love storytelling, developing this broad idea and concept that makes sense in context, but that we know isnt real, but is still cool, and then shrinking the focus to just a few people to tell a relatable, fun, yet fantastical and crazy story that makes us itch to answer all the question as to why these events unfold
we missed out on a great story, but it still manages to be amazing as a standalone movie

Studio thought Max's sequel script was too dark, so they shelved it. You can probably still find the script on Reddit if you want to read it.

I totally think Max Landis should, at the very least, try and get permission from 20th Century Studios to novelize Chronicle, as well as write the two sequels to complete the trilogy. Who else thinks so?
The sequel script is out there on the web, but as far as I know he didn't write a third script.

Lowkey though there is a similar Anime not sure about it being a manga. It’s called Inuyashiki and I highly believe is was based off some of the events in Chronicle although the storyline is a little altered but still something interesting in my opinion

When I first saw this in theater we were so excited and patiently waiting for sequels to explain what happened to them down there. As Matt says at the end he's going to find out what happened to them down there. When the trio goes back a second time the whole was closed up. So why was it suddenly closed up? Then police were nearby saying the ground is unstable. Either the government knew about it or someone was watching and they sealed it up. I wish Steve and Andrew didn't die. Because then the second film could of been them finding out what happened and exploring the world together. That would of been a great film. Maybe go in order you know? First they delevope the powers and get together as close friends. Then they discover what happens and travel the world and people start finding out. Then the first movie could of been the last movie when Andrews mom dies and gets fed up with his father and kills steve by mistake. Then leading to Matt killing Andrew and instead of at the end visiting Tibet. something else could happen. Like Matt stays to himself and flies around at night but fakes that he doesn't have the power anymore. That's actually an idea from r.l stine book how I learned to fly lmao. But something similar would be awsome. Instead of a fucked up ending like Matt getting caught by the fbi. Or maybe running into other people who have the same powers. They could do so many sequels prequels or spin offs it would be fun!. Same with the movie project almanac.
But that was also the beauty of it. Of what happened in chronicle because it was a mystery and left us wondering and creating theories and never knowing. Directors like doing that to us. But he could of at least did 2 more films like originally planned.
+Ashley Garcia - An idea that Max was originally considering for the sequel was to have Matt's powers develop to the point that he is able to travel back in time and avert both Steve's and Andrew's deaths. I saw this in an interview that he did on the SyFy Channel's website. But the sequel he ended up writing is Martyr, which Fox decided was too dark to consider producing. I think the time travel idea would have made a dynamite sequel.

I remember that book by RL Stine. I wasn’t expecting the themes in ending to be so somber as a kid and I really loved it. It’s one of the few goosebumps books I’ve ever read that actually had a happy-ish ending.

What if he were to write his third film as a screenplay, book or even an actual comic. Even if it’s basically a fan fiction, it’ll still presumably be pretty entertaining.
I always thought it would be really cool if there was a spin-off movie that took place during the 20s during prohibition and 2 young gangsters found one of the organisms and gained telekinetic powers and as they get stronger they take out rival gangs and end up fighting in the end
