    Like them both because each one shows a different personality of the tree. As always, nice work.

    Well, how could anyone NOT like the video? Any time the Walnut Master goes to work we know it's going to be a beautiful finished piece and this one was no different. Beautiful work, my friend. I love natural edge pieces and you sure did a great job on this one, Gary! Too bad I can only give one Thumbs Up. 😒😒😒

    I like them both, Gary, or shall I say, I like the round one and I LOVE this one! I like the oval shape, the fact that it's larger and, of course, the bark! The dark of the bark against the sap wood just sets off the whole piece for me. Beautiful finish brings it all together. Fun video to watch and fun to see the two examples side by side. Good job, my friend! 😃

    I've been a big fan of Walnut since high school shop class, where I made a cutting board out of strips of Walnut and Maple. It needs some work, but it is still my favorite wood project, after 50 years! I love the natural shine.

    Super fun to watch the beautiful dark heart wood emerge through the white sapwood of this gorgeous walnut. I often find that a little bit of thin CA along the bottom edge of the bark is good insurance to keeping the bark on a live edge piece. It’s fun to see the 2 bowls together. I love them both. Great job!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Doug and as you say. Walnut is King! If the bark looks like it might come loose I will use CA along the edge as well.
      That means you would need to apply it a number of times as you turned it away.
      This held on pretty well.
      It was fun having the other half of this log to show the difference. Good thing I ended up giving our friends something else as the non live edge one was going to be there.. I think my wife had a choice in keeping this one. I have learned to now not plan on giving any thing away till she looks it over. LOL

    I did the same thing for a fellow that gave me his whole dead Butternut tree that we cut down together. It was a task but my eyes quit working around 120 plus years old counting it's rings. The wood was really punky on the outside of the tree and it was also struck by lightning ⚡. Happy turning my friend and love the set. 😊

    Another beautiful piece. Thank you Gary for sharing your work with us. I really like the turnings with the bark on them. It really makes them look and feel like wood. I have been watching several turners over the past couple of years and have decided to limit my viewing time to the wood turners. Not so much those who use a lot of resin. You and Phil are both my very favorite turners. Keep up the good work.

    Great video as always; thanks Gary. I used to always mount the blank to get a round bowl, then I discovered the videos from @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop, and my turning world turned upside down! If I can see a way to keep a natural edge, I give it a go, so that is my favourite of the two you turned. Either way, Walnut is wonderful! My dear Mother-in-Law, who passed away last year was a great encouragement for my woodturning, but she definitely liked the 'perfect' round designs, she really couldn't understand why anyone would leave the bark on, or the imperfections in ... well, it is just as well we all like different things!

    Hi Gary. Another very beautiful bowl. That walnut is hard to beat! I like both bowls pretty much equally. I struggle a bit with bowl shapes. Mine more or less end up in 3 or 4 designs that seem to repeat themselves whether I want them to or not. The live edge or natural edge bowls sort of have a predestined “boat” shape that’s hard to change, so perhaps very slightly I may tend to turn round bowls to get some variety in shape. I’ve set myself a task to explore bowl shapes and designs to try to broaden my range. Thanks Gary for showing that!
    Cheers, Rick

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Rick. Most of the time you can get a long bowl /mall base from natural edge or a more stubby upright from the same log.
      I like them longer and a smaller base.
      Sometimes you just have to go with what you have and can only get a certain shape from it.

    What a companion piece, Gary! Gorgeous work, well done.
    About holding a puce while mounting on a worm screw, it's my favourite way. In fact, depending on the wood, I have a difficult time getting it started without that technique. I also find it causes the truest mount, versus entirely by hand. Also, Phil's method of bring up the tailstock is the only way to go.
    I should try some acrylic sealer. You obviously appreciate it and I don't like missing out. :)
    I must say, I always thought live edge sacrificed volume of a bowl. I guess that is not always the case. Thanks for the comparison. Great show, Gary.

    Hi Gary. Thanks for the video. I'm in agreement with you that both bowls are great. I have yet to turn a live edge bowl and have a number of pieces that i think will be absolutely stunning (as long as i do them justice). I have a piece if Brigalow that has pale sap wood but a deep chocolate centre. It came down almost 9 months ago so is probably still quite green. As always your videos are a pleasure to watch each week. Thank you for taking the time to share your skills with us. Cheers Bruce

      Thank you very much Bruce. I am not familiar with Brigalow but some woods can be turned green with success. Walnut has been for me.

    Hey Gary, this is your great admirer from germany. Of course, your art of turning is undisputed, but the results from such examples are only impressive because the wood is so breathtaking in its growth and in its outfit. Are you making this video, exactly this one, with a German ash, an alder, a... I don't know, an unspectacular wood, nobody would take any notice of it. In this case, it is not the manual or artistically inspirational energy, but simply the beauty of the material to be worked on. For such a piece of American walnut, I would have to pay a small fortune in Germany. Don't get me wrong, your craftsmanship is undisputed, but, and yet, often very dependent on the material. Nevertheless, you are my turning god, and it gives me great pleasure to hear you. Take care of yourself, stay healthy and give us many more videos with your knowledge and skills!!! Skills used today (that I have or need to have): Spinning screw mount, check. Applying tailstock support, I know I need to do that more (dont' judge). Using the diamond parting tool on edge to create the tenon, noted. Douple ended calipers, those are on my list. Your negative rake scraper works much better than mine, I need to improve my sharpening. Tenon removal, I need to get better at that. Nub removal. check. To be honest, that bowl is AMAZING! I am improving, but I am no where near where you are. Thank you so much for your videos. Truth be told, they are (in my opinion) the best source for learning/adjusting techniques.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much Michael. The diamond shape tool is actually a scraper that came with a set of Craftsman turning tools I bought probably 50 years ago. Most of those sets came with a diamond point and a round nose scraper. Mine is getting so short I can not lay it on the platform on my grinder. A very hand tool and it was about all I used at work for turning patterns. Best tool for doing accurate work.
      The calipers are very handy for sure. I grind my negative rake scraper the same on both sides. Around 40 degrees. It is a much less expensive(cheap) tool from Penn State Industries.
      The tenon removal is a cool trick that I think Phil came up with. Fun to do but maybe practice on something you are not really worried about.

      Gary
