Bowl turned out great. I really appreciate you sharing technical information on cutting and assembling. I watch other turners and think I would like to try what they make but they don't give any detail on the process so I pass on trying many of them. Thanks again.
Thank you Jim, happy you enjoyed this video. Pieces like this can look impossible and a lot will pass on trying. Happy this helps to take the mystery out of it. Have fun turning, Gary
My neighbour is a turner. After 30 years making solid wood bowls and mushrooms, we found you and he has made lots of your projects. I’ve been helping make all the jigs. I just shared this video with him, so I now know what I am going to be doing this weekend lol. Thank you 😊🎉
Hi Gary, Great bowl with a twist! I love the jigs you design and fabricate; they certainly do the job and make it look easy. I would love to try this concept using your approach, do you have earlier videos of making this type of jig? Keep the projects turning.
I have watched a number of your segmented turning videos. However, I have up to now not been brave enough to try such a turning. Your tip on how to compensate for less than precise angles is what I have needed to give segmented turning a try. Thank you for taking the time to teach us!!!
Great video, Gary. A I always learn something watching your TH-cam channel. Now I gotta try vertical stave turnings! Looking forward to your next project. Thanks for sharing your turnings with us.
Phil Anderson nailed it. Just a little twisted. I would get head aches just trying to design something like this. Carl is a wonderful guy. Honest and fun to just chat with. Keep it up...I'll keep watching.
Another beautiful job Gary. Thanks for the explanation about how to twist the staves, it makes for a much more interesting piece than a radial orientation. One of these days I’m going to give segmented turning a try and hope to use some of your lessons when I do.
Thanks for sharing your magic, once again, Gary! That is a beautiful bowl which I am sure will get lots of "wows" and "how did you do that" comments. Great video as always, my friend. Really enjoyed this! Take care, .....Gord
Thank you Gord your comments are much appreciated. This was fun to do and now for something different. Perhaps a simple little turning is in order. Take care my friend, Gary
Entrhalling. I have to say that I always look forward to your videos. I always learn something AND you always challenge me to try something new. Your explanations as to why you chose each specific method (including your adaptation to your hands getting tired) are priceless to those of us who have so much to learn. Kudos on an amazing project AND thank you so much.
Thank you very much Billy. Going to be a few much simpler ones for awhile. Had some very important things we needed to take care of. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gorgeous bowl Gary ! Thanks for all the info on cutting the staves . I wish I had all the tools to do this type of turnings . But , I enjoy watching you make them .

Thanks so much Albert. It was a lot of fun and I had never met Alan even though at one time he lived about less than 10 minutes from me. Thanks for watching, Gary
I love this bowl and I will keep it in my list of to-do projects. I agreee with Phil that it is reminiscent of a hot air balloon. I would love to go to a woodturning symposium, but I am my husband's caretaker and that limits my travels.
Thank you very much Carol. This was the first symposium I have gone to and if it had not been so close I would not have gone to it. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Dave. Since you ask and a few others I will make a video showing how it is made. I will start working on it soon. Thanks for the inspiration to go ahead and do this. Gary
Well done. I saw someone demonstrate this technique at the AAW Symposium in Kansas City a few years back. He used a similar technique with the weights but he used something like 1 hour epoxy but it was extremely messy. Malcolm Tibbetts shared a tip in a class where he uses Titebond 3 and chills it in a bucket of ice water and that extends the open time of the glue. Also, in the back of Malcom’s book, there is a table that shows how the angles change on compound cuts and this might help explain why the angles don’t need to be exact. You can increase or decrease the outside angle of the bowl until your pieces meet up. It is a fun technique to use. Try adding veneers. That really makes glue up interesting.
Thank you Greg. I could not image using epoxy to do this. What a mess! I used Titebond 3 for all of these types of glue ups. Exactly what I was saying by taking the 2 pieces out you are then allowed to make the compond angle. You could figure out what it is but that also means that angle needs to be cut exact. I like the fact I could make this go together about anyway I wanted based on the upper and lower diameter and also how much twist is put into it. Doing a lot of tapered staves on some of the patterns I built shows that up. But in this case I needed to have the exact taper. Thanks for watching, Gary
Great looking bowl! Looking at it, the shape and pattern reminds me of some hot air balloons. If you made another one with a domed lid, it would really look like one.
As always, a beautiful looking piece Gary. Last week i attended TurnFest here in Australia. It was held on the Gold Coast and was my first Symposium. But at least I don’t look like Big Foot anymore as some said I seemed to resemble.

I've seen his type of twisting staves technique before, but your demonstration of it was brilliant ... especially liked your automatic power feed for the bandsaw, fantastic result on the cut surface 😁 It's amazing how much more interesting the piece becomes just by adding a twist, it turned out beautifully 👍
Thank you very much Barry. It is a fun project and always cool watching the joints close up just right. The fine tooth blade is the key to a nice smooth cut. I have used a 14 tooth on a dizzy bowl but find the 10 and 12 leave a plenty good finish for gluing. The key is a slow uninterrupted cut. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you again for sharing your secrets (actually common sense) I have learned so much from watching your channel and have incorporated many concepts into my work.
Hey Papa long time since I have dropped in to watch your video's, sorry mate Ill health. I have subscribed again, great video and I love how you narrate your video's. The bowl was stunning.
I love this design. The technique/process to make the blank is genius. I do appreciate you sharing this in such detail. Some day I may have to give this a go. Beautiful piece.
Thanks so much Doug. It is a very fun process and once you see that you can make it happen you will know it is going to work. The first one I did I was thinking. Man I hope this works as I just cut up a lot of wood. Now it's I sure hope I picked the right choice of wood for the shape I am making. For me the shape of the wood helps me pick what woods to use. When gluing one up that is. Thanks for watching, Gary

It's amazing how much more interesting the piece becomes just by adding a twist, it turned out beautifully 👍
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That turned out, absolutely beautiful!

As usual it looks great! This is another one of those things that I can live without knowing why it works, as long as I know how to do it.😉
Thank you Bob...now you should be able to do it. At least that was my plan.
Take care,
Gary

I love this design. The technique/process to make the blank is genius. I do appreciate you sharing this in such detail. Some day I may have to give this a go. Beautiful piece.
Thanks so much Doug. It is a very fun process and once you see that you can make it happen you will know it is going to work.
The first one I did I was thinking. Man I hope this works as I just cut up a lot of wood.
Now it's I sure hope I picked the right choice of wood for the shape I am making.
For me the shape of the wood helps me pick what woods to use. When gluing one up that is.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
