Matthew O'Brien sent me to this video - holy crap I think my mind just melted. I never realized the power of compound clips. WOW thanks for a great video!
Wow! Thank you!!! Stumbled upon this video. This video answered questions about FCP that I haven’t even had. I don’t know how many times I’ll watch it. Pen and paper needed for notes
I’m so glad you found the tips in this video helpful! Hopefully, you find some of the other videos useful as well. I really appreciate the comment. 😄🙏🏼
Thank you for this video, I was always scared of compound clips. In fact I believe that each of the uses you mentioned deserves a separate video for themselves, with various examples to elaborate. Would be great if you can do that! TIA
Arggggh. I had been trying to figure out why I could not make a compound clip on my stop motion project after I applied transitions for longer than I care to admit. And you covered it in the first minute. Thankyou.

this is such a helpful video....I think Compound Clips are not as common as other aspects of FCPX...but this one was incredible Brad....as are all your videos. THANK YOU.
Hi Brad, thank you. Can you help me can not find to change the connector from a compound clip, the lower clip in the timeline. It is always at the beginning, but I heard it is possible to change the connector to another place. Thanks, Ernst
Yes it’s definitely possible. Hold down the Command and Option keys, then click the connected clip (or the gray border of the storyline) at the point where you want to position the connection point. The connection point will move to the point where you clicked. Hope that helps!
👏👏👏👏 Fantastic video! Great info, very concise and straight to the point and looks good all the way through! If only all tutorial videos were like this on TH-cam ;) haha
Watched once for the game changing education. Watched twice to take notes. Watched a third time for a little drinking game I just invented called "compound clip."
Quick question...Im thinking of using compound clips to make a long clip that I have, a shorter clip in my library section to create proxy files, so I don't have to create a proxy file for an hour and a half long clip, but rather just the sections I need to..is this a practical use of them? Thanks! and great video
It’s still going to make a proxy file of the entire clip, even if only a section is in the compound clip. Because proxy files are made on a clip by clip basis on not on a specific duration/selection of a clip. Hope that helps!
Thanks Brad , great tutorial !! Just an off topic question . Do you know if i can make the timeline stable and not moving up or down , left and right like other software too ?
Thanks for watching. Hmmm 🤔 I don’t think there is any way to “lock” the timeline like that. The closest you’ll probably get to what you want is to hit Shift Z to fill the timeline to the screen so you don’t have to scroll but it will still move if you swipe left/right or up/down.
Thanks, it’s very useful. What you can say about compound clip organization strategy, because after some time I have a bunch of CC in my events with strange names )))) What to do with them?
Glad it was helpful! I think it's helpful to always give them a name that makes sense when you create them. You can always right-click on them and rename them later if you need to try organise them later on in the edit. Hope that helps! 😄🤞🏼
Is there a way to preview the whole scene (top of the timeline) when editing the compound clip? For example to see if things are well aligned with the rest of the video. So basically when I skimm, show not only footage from the compound, but how it would look if I would have went back to the timeline and skimmed there.
That would be a great feature but it's not possible. A workaround would be to duplicate the compound clip and then select everything and hit V to hide everything. That way you can kind of see what clips were where in the compound clip. But you'll have to repeat the process if you make any changes in the compound clip of course. Hope that helps!
Hi I am facing a strange issue, I have a saved compound clip, that I use to "uncompound" while using with new videos, but today out of nowhere I am not able to uncompound the clip using Shift+ Command + G. This option is not working. But if I have create a fresh Compound Clip, that I can uncompound. Then the option is working. What error is this?
That’s odd. Does the frame rate of the compound clip and the timeline match? I’m not sure what the cause could be but a quick workaround would be to open that compound clip, copy everything inside, go back to your timeline and paste everything there.
Question, I think this has screwed me up m any times. Let's say I duplicate a session. for different versions for the edits. Does editing a compound clip in one version alter the edit in the other? I really think this has messed things up for me from time to time.
If you just duplicate a project, then any changes you make to a compound clip, will reflect in all duplicated timelines. However, if you duplicate a project as a snapshot, which you can do by right clicking on the timeline, then any changes you make to a compound clip, will only be made in that timeline and not any other timeline. I hope that helps. 😄👊🏼
I keep having this issue where when I try to transition between compound clips the transition will only attach to one clip or the other, but not between them. Anybody know why?
You probably need handles inside the compound clip in order to have room for the transition. I would open each compound clip and extend what's inside to allow for the transition.
been using FCPX for over 10 freaking years and never knew about the "ungrouping" for compound clips. I was always cutting and pasting out of the compound clip for some reason. What's wrong with my life
I'm so glad that an FCP veteran like you can still learn something from my videos! That little trick should save you some time going forward 😄 Thanks for watching Miguel!

how to exit compound clip?
You can hit the back arrow next to the compound clip name at the top of the timeline to go back to your main timeline.
@@Brad_West thank you I actually rewatched your video again and I got it.
Awesome! Glad you got it sorted 😄👍🏼
