I have been struggling with Final Cut for so long, this is the first video I've seen that has actually helped me, I had a library with every single youtube video Ive ever done, I closed it and made a new library just for the one video I'm working on and its running like normal. thank you so much, it was driving me nuts! I thought I was about to have to buy a whole new computer!
My library is labeled TH-cam and I have a bunch of different videos under that as separate events and then projects within that. Are you saying that each new video is a library on its own instead of an event?
@@BrownCandyPaint that's how I do it. Are there exceptions? Yes. For example, when I do Amazon videos, I just have one library called Amazon videos, then do different events in there. The reason is most of those are really short and I don't keep them. Hope that helps.
@@BrownCandyPaint let me clarify something. I only do different libraries for completely different projects. If I do an interview with someone, that video and any cutdowns of that would be in the same library. Hope that makes sense.
@@KevinKolbeyes that makes total sense. What I’m getting is that the smaller videos can live in a library. My larger projects and its elements can each be its own library.
That was the absolute best tip I have gotten by far… The last one where you mention to delete the generated clips, and check both those check boxes… That fixed everything and made my M1 run the software like it's new again .. Many thanks, you're a genius.
so good to hear that you are also on an M1 computer! I've been struggling with FCP that I was considering going back to imovie haha but then I thought I should probably learn this expensive software
Hello, great video, very helpful, my name is Emma and I am a student filmmaker and I am having problems with fcpx and I don’t really know anyone who knows fcpx, do you have a place where people can ask you questions?
Just discovered proxy media and it has changed my editing workflow for the better. I'm editing on a less than ideal HDD set up and attempting to dredge through 4k footage was a STRUGGLE. With proxy media, everything is SO fast now.
You would think with the m1’s and m2’s out in the market you wouldn’t have to worry about this but….do we need a m10 in 15 years time to never worry about this
I'm not sure if you mentioned this but viewing it in better performance instead of better quality is what did it for me. But question. Will viewing it in better performance mess with the export? I can't see any noticeable difference but I just wanted your take on it
Great tip! I've used that some but not as much as the others. Re: export? Nope not at all. That's strictly a viewing only feature. Thanks for watching.
Actually I think you can. Try this: Select the clip or clips, go to the Inspector, select the "i" option for "info", scroll down to Transcode Media. You should get a box that pops up that gives you the option of converting it to Proxy. Haven't tried this but think that might work.
I have my new 2023 MacBook M3 with 48 GB of memory RAM and 1T of space, but my FCP which I transferred from my old mac is working super slow mostly when writing. I followed a couple steps you said, but still slow. If I re-install this software back again will it delete the project I'm working on right now? Thanks
Weird. Re: reinstalling, now it shouldn't. Just make sure you have a copy of the library and files handy. You can export the edit list too. I had to do something similar a long time ago but everything came back great.
Another thing. If you do that and still have issues, reach out to Apple Support. When I ran into that issue and had to reinstall, Apple walked me through it.
Thanks for these tips, and all good stuff. My issue is more basic. Having just finally upgraded to a silicon MacBook Pro M2 I was expecting it to rip through exporting/encoding to HD video, which is all I use. Well it is quite a bit faster than my 2018 MBP. But the system only uses about 10% of my available CPU. Is that normal? Are there any setting I should check?
Thanks for watching and good question. Both of my Macs are M1 chips and both are really fast. Most of my editing is on my Mac Mini M1 and has been good enough I didn't upgrade (yet) to the M2. One reason is I've heard it's not that much faster...some but not overly noticeable. I'd reach out to Apple and see if they have any more ideas.
great video but idk how you can edit with back ground rendering turned off. I need the clips to re render after I clip them so I can see the transition.
Even before I upgraded to the M1 chip, I had it turned off since it really slowed everything down. Now I'm on a Mac Mini M1 with 16GB RAM and never have an issue. Like any effect I use is immediate.
@@KevinKolbe yeah I’m working in animation so I have a lot of cuts and need to see it rendered after each cut. Outside of that this video really helped me get organized! Thanks again!
Hello, I have next question for You. How many plugin, effect, transition i can put to FCP ?? I think to many also can slow down program ?? Or This is not a problem ??
I did it all and my fcp is still so laggy. Every time I make a cut and click to reposition the playhead, it lags. My RAM shows green, CPU very low. I don't know what to do :( I have a few hours of footage, and a few clips that last an hour each. Maybe that matters, but how am I supposed to work if I have long clips? Help :(
Make sure you've got any program closed you simply don't need. Beyond that, try editing with proxy files. If you're not familiar with that, it creates very low-resolution clips to make editing faster, especially with large files and projects. When finished you export and FCP will convert only what you used to high-rez files.
@@KevinKolbe Thank you for answering, I am already working on proxy files. I can try closing Chrome browser and see if that helps. Not sure why that would help if there are no spikes shown on my RAM graph, but worth a try
I use Chrome but it is a RAM hog. I edit on a Mac Mini M1. More than enough for FCP and still close anything I don't need simply to give FCP all the power it needs.
@@KevinKolbe I've been working with closed Chrome since yesterday and it still lags. I have a ton of free RAM still. The lag happens always when I make a cut and click to move the playhead a bit before the cut. The playback itself, when it already plays, is fine. It's not unworkable but pretty annoying and slows me down
I'm an author who does a LOT of stories and videos for my books. Are you saying I should have a different library for every one of those stories/reels/videos?? I've done hundreds of videos. Should I have hundreds of libraries?
I create a new library for every video unless I'm doing variations of something. Having one massive library with a ton of files will slow down FCP, possibly your computer too. Another downside, that one library gets corrupt, you're screwed.
@@KevinKolbe This advice may help me tremendously. Its so difficult to know what the libraries, events, projects are even supposed to be for for optimal performance
@@BrownCandyPaint Glad it helped. Personally I wish it was a tad easier with different names but the more you do it the easier it will get to remember.

If you turn off background rendering when you choose to export does FCP rendering then? I’m very new to FCP.
