I found one of my very old beginning piano books from childhood, actually one older than I am at 74...a 1935 circa book. Over the decades somehow I had retained remembering the notes for the Treble Cleft, but had forgotten the notes for the Bass Cleft. TY for posting this. Now, after I have memorized the Bass Cleft notes again, I can be off and running....playing my keyboard.....practise, practise after that. TY

These are the most informative theory videos I have seen; you are so articulate and thorough with your explanation, yet concise and easy to understand. I can tell these are going to be a saviour for me, as most lessons I have watched or read, have skipped ahead of important steps, whether because they have assumed you have understood the message, or because the creator has underestimated how difficult it can be for a new learner to grasp the foundational steps in learning music.

Folks need to stop teaching new music readers to recognize that those notes say "face" or to use "every good boy does fine" or whatever... music notes are random in real songs and you need to recognize them without trying to use these associations which slow you down and get you stuck at a particular level. Just stop it and teach the notes sequentially and then randomly.

ABC (from 2 ledgers (helping lines) below), ABC (center of the staff), ABC (to 2 ledgers above). Symmetrical -> easy to remember, spans the whole thing from -2 ledgers to +2 ledgers.
EF starts the staff, EF ends the staff (the first line is E, last line is F), excluding ledgers (ABC + ABC)
FACE: in-between the lines. (Also, ABC in the middle, so A an C are the middle ones, And, EF starts the staff, so F is the first one, and EF ends the staff, so the E is there in the top -> FACE.
D in the face: if you draw a person from E to F (the staff), D is where the face would be (D was the hardest one for me to remember, so it's a D in the face :D)
G: right above the staff - and where the G clef shows
that's it, 3 octaves + a fourth span, pretty easy to remember

arancienne The stem direction is usually an aesthetic aspect (save for multiple-track notation and in certain aspects of beaming). The usual rule of thumb is that stemmed notes above the middle line of the stave have stems down, while those below it have stems up. Notes on the middle line are a bit of a grey area, as some say that the stems should go down whereas others say it can go either way but the stem direction of the surrounding notes might make one way look preferable compared to the other (e.g. if all the stems of the other notes in a bar/measure point down then it may well be preferable if the stems of the notes whose note-heads are on the middle line also point down).

In Western musical notation, the staff, or stave, is a set of five horizontal lines and four spaces that each represent a different musical pitch-or, in the case of a percussion staff, different percussion instruments.

I loved playing music in Middle School and I have always wanted to pick it up again. But I've always been extremely intimidated by the idea of relearning how to read sheet music. Finally tonight I said to hell with it, I need to learn how to do this or else it's going to make things way harder. Five minutes later I now can read music again, albeit slowly. Should have done this way earlier! Thank you!
