Fantastic to hear Brad! This is only part of the story. I have a follow up/expansion of this idea that makes playing guitar so much easier in my live stream tomorrow at 7pm UK time. Well worth a watch if you want your mind blown!
I keep my guitars by my bedside. So when I wake up, I can see the fretboard right away & I can grab them to practice. Soon as I wake up, I look at a guitar & read off the notes on the 6th & 5th strings, to make it second nature memory ~ To let it sink in. Then, I close my eyes & think in my head, A String: 3 is C, 5 is D, 7 is E, 9 is F# & so on. Then I think about the E string & I go, “3 is G, 5 is A, 7 is B, 9 is C# & so on. I learned it in a couple of weeks. I only got overwhelmed when I tried to learn all the strings at on e. Then, I came across a teacher who said learning the 6th & 5th strings are the most important, because those two are where most blues, rock & pop are played. That was very encouraging. I’m proud to have learned the E & A strings this year, 2023. It was an important New Year’s resolution. ❤️😁

for years people kept yammering at me about the circle of 5ths. I could see how it helped make sense of key signatures but just couldn't get it to make sense on the fretboard. Now I know why. I am glad I seen this video because it was another technique into finding my notes. I am practicing octaves, string pairs, the minus 5 trick, learning each fret by major note, and now this. The Battle Ends....... have helped me a lot. Thank you. Keep these gem videos shining.
This video is brilliant! When I was 16 y/o I told myself I'll give guitar a try for 10 years and if it doesn't work out in 10 years find another line of work. Well, it was fun but frustrating and unprofitable. Moving on. This idea that I can play guitar again, even if haltingly and badly has dogged me, nipping at my heels for decades. In my early years, I was taught guitar by bandmates mostly self-taught, learning the fretboard with the encouragement of the musicians around me from a few basic scales. Years later coming back to the unfulfilled longing to project my own voice in ringing guitar strings, eating humble pie, and ignoring arthritis, I bought a cheap rig, some guitar books, and soaked up some instructional videos and TH-cam videos. Both too much and not quite enough information to make it all come together. I have lately been grappling with the complexity of the guitar's layout and the translation to guitar notation. EADGBE don't forget the WTF? A BC D EF G >< G FE D CB A. Many, many thanks to you, Ricky Comiskey, unlocking the arrangement in such a clear and memorable message. This is the boost I needed in this moment. Much appreciated.! Absolutely awesome. Love this video, it is magic, poetry, and engineering. Always the best.
When I clicked on this I didn't think it would help but this is one of the most helpful lessons I've found for memorizing the fretboard. Thank you very much. If I had $ I'd give you some.
Finally a fantastic and relatively easy way to memorize the notes on the fretboard - I've been working on this for years - but with your little mnemonic device I've finally cracked the code - much appreciate !!! One of the most useful theory lessons I've ever watched on TH-cam!!! Cheers from Canada!!!
Great explanation. It become very easy when you explained it like this. I remember notes on fret randomly, mainly pattern of C, D, E and F, G A but your explanation connected it all together. Thanks for it
Thank you for this. I've been trying to memorise the fretboard I've already meorized the E and A string cause of bar chords and wanted to memorise the whole fretboard cause I want to learn how to improvise. This made memorizing the fretboard so much easier. Thank you
I found that understanding the 'Whole Step/Half Step' patterns of the different types of chords very informative as a great start off to music theory . . . but I did teach myself music theory, after already being able to play guitar and piano by ear.
New to guitar, coming from piano and it's been strange just not knowing where all the notes are and having to sort of work it out. Will try to keep this in mind.
Just remember that the F is the next fret higher than the E and the C is the next fret higher than the B. All of the others have a fret in-between and either a sharp or flat. Once you learn how to navigate the fretboard knowing those things it's easy to learn all of the note locations
I’ve been learning guitar for a year. Last week while i was doing an arpeggio exercise, I used BEADGCF to remember all the notes i need to hit first for each arpeggio cycling backwards through the circle of fifths. Kindve neat getting recommended this after figuring out that pattern.
Thank you so much! This was exactly what I needed to simplify and memorize the fretboard: Also, from below I do like the "First" vs. "Father" for my memorization anyway.
Very useful video Ricky. I’ve also noticed that the frets for both E-strings follow the chromatic scale up the neck so you can identify the first note at any fret! You can then use that beadgcf.
Best video on locating notes quickly! Coming from a classical background where we drilled in sight-reading exercises, I wish I'd had known this before!
Omg love you Rick for this. I am good with chords thats how i started learning guitar focusing on chords only as i try to sing with it. Then realised that knowing basics and leads will add that oomph to my songs. But i was so frustrated that i did not have patience to do exercises and was finding the way to learn the fret board. I was praying to the Universe please help me. Look what i found. Your video. You and Father Charles’ saved me. Thanks Rick. Gratitude🙏🏻🥰
Simply beautiful Rick!!!!!! With my basic background in music theory, I found your discovery is superb. For # (flat) notes we just simply fill up the jigsaw puzzle.
I’ve watched your previous video on this and really found it useful. This one is better as it is short and to the point. I really had a light bulb moment with the perfect 4ths and major 3rd discussion and diagram. Thanks for a great video.
wow. I’ve been playing for over 20 years and this is still super helpful. I ended up memorizing the fretboard by using a tone row where open E was zero to 11th fret as 11, was finally able to see the patterns you’ve illustrated here much more useful with notes for key signatures. Great lesson!
For the first time I came to an understanding of how fretboard works??? this video is amazing. I’m surprised it’s free. I’m subscribing dude!! Only that, this gave me the big idea of the fretboard, but putting it into practice is another thing. Hi Ricky, I just watched this excellent video again without distractions. I 'get it', now. I'll make a chart and learn your method..even though I do actually know them. The namonic is very useful. Cheers
Yo, this legit just made sooooo much sense to me. I have been trying to learn guitar through learning songs, and chords a-f major, and pentatonic scales various bars in various keys. I didnt and still dont understand chords, notes, keys, scales and how they are components and how these components work together. Just an general idea of their existence. This is a big piece to a picture im still trying to figure out. The way you explained this was very helpful. If i could make a suggestion. Add a segment where you highlight each bar of pentatonic scale (in different color for each bar). I think that would fully capture a lot of information a beginner like myself could use that really deepens the understanding of the fret board. Thanks!!
This was a great device for finding notes. A couple of confusing things that might help. The opening segment talks about compass but then that device is replaced with a different device about high and low. The latter makes more sense so the first one felt like irrelevant knowledge that I had to disassociate with. I would love to hear how this translates to sound. Granted I can just pick my guitar up, but it's still helpful for ear training relationships
Knowing the Circle of Fifths, I was instantly able to apply this technique to the 7th & 2nd frets but not at all to any others. HOWEVER, knowing the intervals (full/half steps between notes of the major scale in addition to what you just taught me might help me figure out some more of this (e.g. a note on any of the top 2 strings will be the same note two strings & two frets higher). The compensation you mention has to then be added to use that on the next two strings (D&G). Maybe that will help other people who can't grasp your approach.
One more thing to note is that once you have this pattern memorized you can use it from any note on the fretboard. This will allow you to easily play in different keys.
To elaborate, scales are pretty much the same in whichever key you are in. So just knowing the pattern(not the name of each note played) will keep you in key. For example, if you play the pattern of the C major scale, but start on the D note, the pattern will take you through the notes D, E, F#, G, A, C#,D, even though you may not know those note names.
@@williambiggs3699 That would be playing in D Major using the notes you listed above. Besides the B.. You can also play the C major scale, but start on D and use the notes D E F G A B C D. That is how modes work and that would be D Dorian.
Ok i think i see what you are saying so it depends on if we are dealing with the note ending on the 2nd b or 3 G string (because of the kink in the chain) OR the note is the Battle Ends.......for Father, and Battle are the start and finish of the circle of 4th.
The guitar IS tuned to the circle of fourths. This video offers further important insights The Guitar Fretboard Rosetta Stone - Weekly Guitar Class th-cam.com/users/livema1AxeNGdV4?feature=share
I enjoyed your first video presenting the same subject, this video helps drive the point into my rather old skull. Your book has been a big help to me also since i can dwell on a particular aspect of your lesson until I understand the information you’re trying to convey. Thank you and please keep up your good work.
Very well done! I've played from tabs but never learrned the notes. Son is taking lessons and I've asked him how he finds notes because it makes ZERO sense. This finally helped - thank you!!! To those saying you went too fast, I only had to rewind it once, so it was well laid out. Appreciate it.
You are the one. My search for a teacher ends with you. I assimilate your methods immediately. Thank you. [Sidebar: The peculiar thing is that I cannot understand any of the comments. It’s as if I’ve taken a turn and fallen into a reverse universe.]
I was a professional pianist for years but in the "Nashville" scene. That is, I don't read music but I'm well-versed in chords, circles of fifths and fourths and basic music theory. But, as a long-time pianist, the fretboard is so frustratingly stupid that it's caused a lot of frustration for me as someone who wants to learn to play guitar. Unfortunately, I can't say this video has helped me at all. I understand the relationship between the notes and I understand the mnemonic for remembering the sequence....but, honestly this is so illogical that I can't see much practical use for it. God, the fretboard is so stupid....
Ok. So the thing is you’re comparing a piano perspective to a new way of seeing how notes are laid out. You could think of the guitar as 6 staggered piano keyboards(think Jordan Rudess/Rick Wakeman). The BEADGCF mnemonic is essentially the white keys jumbled into a sequence of 4ths (B to F = #4). We find sharps/flats relative to the natural notes. I have another video that look in the linear pattern. When I look at a piano I always use the 3/2 black key pattern to find my way around. Because the fretboard is essentially uniform on each fret (apart from the position dots) we have to think in 2D like a chessboard. Have a watch of this video and see if you see things any clearer. th-cam.com/users/livebDZYmhIlS4A?si=n-Tz2AV6coePX-cc
as i had not known the existence of the circle of fifth a year ago, i created my own for fifth fret (from right to left/ from E to e string): After Each C Goes D. and e string is same after as E.
Also, strings are numbered from bottom (thin string), so step up a fret from 3rd string to 2nd and step up at end of pattern. By step up, I mean move fingering to one fret higher (6th to 7th fret) for example. And step up at end of pattern (BEADGCF-step-BEA...) If both occur simultaneously, step up twice.
Believe it or not, I use this method except, I went further and use the scale number (7362514). So when solo, I think in terms of Chord Roots. So if an A-maj is playing, I simple know to the 1, 3, 5. If Jazz , the 7th, or the 9th( 2nd from he next octave). SO I solo with the numbers of BEAD-GCF/ 7632-514
Hi Ricky, I have received your book and was wondering if you could write the number of the book lesson in the description of your videos so we can find it easily, or say that it's not in the 80 book lessons. Thanks in advance.
Hi Marcel. I recognise you from my Facebook group. There's spreadsheet in there that does that. I'll tag you :) This is a remake of lesson 5 in the book. It would be a nightmare trying to figure out which lessons are not in the book as there are 202 videos on my channel.
I learned the pattern back in the early 90's without the pneumonic. I believe the Holy Spirit gave me the enlightenment/Wisdom of this pattern. Ironically in all my earlier instruction books on Guitar, this pattern was never shown, from what I can remember in them. It seems it has not been in regular circulation til the 2000's, which is a long time considering the popularity of guitar. YOU Ricky have the best Beginner lesson's on TH-cam by far. Wish I would have been able to have you book back in the early 70's.
I love your videos, they are very helpful. I purchased your book several months ago on Amazon. Are you going to be publishing updates for people that already purchased the original version? Thanks!

RICKY RICKY...this is ingenious. THANK YOU. ❤
I bought your book! It is wonderful! You are the best guitar teacher on TH-cam!
Thanks buddy awhile back I seen your video about grouping notes together to memorize the fretboard. It helped me out immensely 👍👋💯👊
Really helpful and simple video. I’ve been struggling with finding notes and I think getting this ingrained into my head is going to help me massively
🤯 I am saving this video for the rest of my life lol thank you
Knowing the Circle of Fifths, I was instantly able to apply this technique to the 7th & 2nd frets but not at all to any others.
I’ve always been terrible at finding notes on the fretboard. 18+ years of playing guitar and still having “Aha!” moments.
+1

One more thing to note is that once you have this pattern memorized you can use it from any note on the fretboard.
This will allow you to easily play in different keys.
You can use it from any NATURAL note on the fretboard.
Can you guys elaborate? I'm struggling to see the practical use beyond just memorizing the location of these notes

I could never understand why the "fb" pattern stopped working after the 10th fret. Thank you for explaining so that it makes sense to me.
This video offers further important insights

I enjoyed your first video presenting the same subject, this video helps drive the point into my rather old skull. Your book has been a big help to me also since i can dwell on a particular aspect of your lesson until I understand the information you’re trying to convey. Thank you and please keep up your good work.
Thanks Bro! I bought your Book quite awhile ago and it's awesome!
This is very easy explanation and this is better than saying "Elephant and Donkey Grows Big Ears". Lol... You explained it very clear. Thank you!

This is just the 2nd video i've seen from you. Instantly subscribed.
Very well done! I've played from tabs but never learrned the notes. Son is taking lessons and I've asked him how he finds notes because it makes ZERO sense. This finally helped - thank you!!! To those saying you went too fast, I only had to rewind it once, so it was well laid out. Appreciate it.
This is a brilliant way of teaching the fretboard. Thanks for sharing, it really resonated with me
This is awesome man, thanks for pointing this out and explaining it really well!
EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT VIDEO!! GLAD I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL I SUBSCRIBED! Now I just have to learn how to play.... 😊
You are the one. My search for a teacher ends with you. I assimilate your methods immediately. Thank you. [Sidebar: The peculiar thing is that I cannot understand any of the comments. It’s as if I’ve taken a turn and fallen into a reverse universe.]
AWESOME I GET IT A LOT THIS, I BOUGHT THE BOOK - MADE EASIER THANKS

Dang! I think something just clicked! Book is in my cart!
This is really excellent. A waking thought of “holy crap the guitar itself is a circle of fourths cheat code” led me here. Really great work.
That was a fantastic demonstration of the fretboard! Thank you!!!
You'd be much happier with a mandolin. Tuned in perfect 5ths and the fretboard is 100% consistent and logical.
I've got to try to apply this to my ukulele ...
I’ve always just remembered the word BEAD and then GCF after
Me too! Then it’s just DEAB (BEAD spelled backwards) and FCG.
as i had not known the existence of the circle of fifth a year ago, i created my own for fifth fret (from right to left/ from E to e string):
After Each C Goes D. and e string is same after as E.
Also, strings are numbered from bottom (thin string), so step up a fret from 3rd string to 2nd and step up at end of pattern. By step up, I mean move fingering to one fret higher (6th to 7th fret) for example.
And step up at end of pattern (BEADGCF-step-BEA...)
If both occur simultaneously, step up twice.
Many people refer to the low E as string 1, I've seen both ways. Makes more sense to me
Bright eyes always detect glowing candle fire 🎉
Thanks I will use this!
Don’t give away the content of my next video dude! That’s why this is very powerful
sorry but when someone say the third I have no idea what he is talking about . I'm such a slow learner on this.
I want to know what this means
Waitttttttt… 🤯

Brilliant. If you don’t understand music theory need to understand that first to get this right.
Can you please explain what you mean by music theory?

Hi Ricky,
I have received your book and was wondering if you could write the number of the book lesson in the description of your videos so we can find it easily, or say that it's not in the 80 book lessons.
Got confused but I will try again to understand it, now I need a small break ❤❤

@@rickysguitar yo, Thank You ❤️🕺🏻
Great lesson! Much appreciated!
thanks for this! been practicing it forwards and backwards since I saw your first vid on it...splendid!

Thanks!
Love your teaching style Ricky! ❤
O.M.G. you fixed my brain. This is brilliant! Thank you!
This is very helpful. Thanks
The same pattern can be found on adjacent strings moving down the fretboard....it is a lateral and vertical pattern.
