    Rivers and creeks were the highways.
    In about 1994 I took a sail from Norfolk to Deale, MD. Stops at Irvington, Saluda, Tangier Island , Solomons Island and a night nowhere but out of the shipping lanes. Really gave me a look at how Americans saw the transportation routes before paved roads, and bridges were in place.

      Thank you brother! That sounds like a fun trip. Can you imagine Lewis and Clark heading paddling west, portaging heavy wooden boats for miles? Those were real men! I wonder if there any log drivers or timber rafters left around -- the old timers who used to move wood to West Point? They didn't stop until the 70s, so they'd be in their 80s now. I would love to interview one of those guys for the channel!
