Solve a System of Equations by Using Elimination of Multiplying

- 👉Learn how to solve a system (of equations) by elimination. A system of equations is a set of equations which are collectively satisfied by one solution of the variables. The elimination method of solving a system of equations involves making the coefficient of one of the variables to be equal in all the equations that make up the system, in order to eliminate the variable using subtraction (or addition as the case may be). The coefficients can be made equal by multiplying the entire equation with a number which when multiplied to the coefficient of the variable to be eliminated gives the LCM of the coefficients of the variable to be eliminated in all the equations. Then we solve for the remaining variable(s).
After we have obtained the solution{s} for the remaining variable(s), we substitute the obtained solution into any of the original equations to obtain the solution of the eliminated variable.

8 years later you're still helping students with algebra, greatly appreciated man

I said that too 😭😭
Sir, first I'd like to thank you so much, your videos helped me so much.
I was watching this video and I think you got a mistake in your algorithm, but your result still correct tho.
you multiplied the first equation by 5 while you should have multiplied it by negative 5 so we can have opposite terms so we can eliminate.
but then you added a corrective negative sign to the 5x of the second equation, so you could eliminate the terms.
And because the signs were switched in the first equation and it didn't affect the multiplication in both sides in the combined equation, the answer came up correct in the end. please correct me if I'm wrong.
nurde
my math teacher taught it the same way and it works
Its basically the same thing if you have the same sign you subtract diffrent sign you add
My problem is :
4x-5y=6
5x-6y=7
since all the number are so similar i would have to multiply using fractions, but that complicates things. Is there a different way to do this?
(Jan 9 2020)
You could multiply both equations by a common factor.
like 5(4x-5y=6) and 4(5x-6y=7)
you'd get
20x-25y=30
20x-24y=28
Now you can subtract:
0x-y=2
or -y = 2
so y = -2
plug back in to find x.
4x-5(-2)=6
4x+10=6
4x=-4
x=-1
Hope this helps.
Wesley Clark, I think you’re a little late buddy, but that’s really cool for you helping out! :)
Yeah about 2 months late lol but maybe someone else will see it that needs it :D
@@wesleyclark7230 ty I needed this :>
Thanks so much you just answer the first question on my assignment
thank you so much sir!!
Why cut the important question.. Why was 5y + (-2y) = 7? Did the signs flipped on the bottom equation or something??
thank you so much for this, i went through so many tutorials trying to figure this out because i missed a day of school so i didn’t get to learn it in class.
thank you MR brian logan
Hello, love your videos. Why did you subtract the equations instead of adding them? When I added them it came out to 7=13/3, and is obviously incorrect, but I don't see the difference.
Idk if u need this rn anymore 😭😭 but you have the smaller equation to always like multiply and a rule of adding and subtracting is if thye have the same sign subtract diffrent sign add in the example he showed its the same sign so you have to subtract
thank you so much youre my hero literal icon!!
btw if anyone is watching i think he meant to multiply (x+y=-9) by -5 and not 5.
How is your sweet little angel 2 nd baby My wishes to her God bless the baby
thank you! she is a bundle of joy
-45 And + 32 How will you get - 77 when you put - before 5x you didn’t change the signs before - 2y n 32 ( But I understood that it is + 2y n - 32 this is by seeing all your other videos )
I am actually subtracting so -45 - (+32) is -45-32 = -77 and 5x-(-2x) is 5x+2x=7x
Pov you got and ad that said are you still searching TH-cam for math help
Yep got that 🤣
Oof I still don’t understand
The only thing I don’t know is that why do u minus the same signs and not adding and why do u add for different signs not minus am just confused by this and the whole number why didn’t U just minus I mean they have the same sign so subtract because my math teacher told me same sign is subtraction and different sign is adding
Its the opposite bro
Same signs is add different signs is subtracting
Wouldn’t it be -5
x+y = 2
-3x+4y = 15
Hello, I'm currently helping my 9th grade daughter with her homework, and we cannot get this problem correct. By plugging random numbers into the original equation, I know the answer is (-1,3), but I keep getting y=9 when I go through the process. Can you help?
well I am not sure where you are going wrong, the problem in video seems to be the same type of process you want to follow. Do you have a question on the process or a certain step?
Brian McLogan
x+y=2
-3+4y=15
- 3(x+y=2)
-3x+4y=15
-3x-3y=-6
3x+4y=15
1y/1 = 9/1
y=9
Where did I go wrong? Thank you for responding to the 1st comment!
I think you made some mistakes writing down your work but I think I noticed your mistake which was multiplying the top equation by a negative 3 and then adding the equations, -3x+-3x = -6x so you did no actually eliminate it, If you multiply the top equation by +3 then add you will get 0x and 7y
Brian McLogan
Okay, I think I got it.
x+y=2
-3x+4y=15
3(x+y=2)
1(-3x+4y=15)
3x+3y=6
-3x+4y=15
7y/7=21/7
Y=3
Brian McLogan Thanks for the help!
Sorry''how was this matede is correct?
here till now

Im confused why did he subtract but then add
Am I the only who’s still confused 😭😭
