    It's a 10-year-old video and I don't know if anyone came up with this trick:
    3x-2y+4z=35
    -4x+y-5z=-36
    Multiply the second equation by -1 and you get
    4x-y+5z=36
    Now you deduct Equation 1 from Equation 2 and you get this very simple equation:
    x+y+z=1 => y=1-x-z
    From equation 2 you have
    (y=)4x+5z-36=1-x-z
    If you rearrange this equation, you get
    5x+6z=37
    Now you use Equation 3:
    5x-3y+3z=31
    From these two equations, you can eliminate 5x and you get the simple equation:
    3y+3z=6 => y+z=2
    Now remember the easy equation you found before:
    x+y+z=1
    if y+z=2, then
    x=-1
    5x+6z=37 =>z=(37+5)/6
    z=7
    y+z=2
    y=-5
    Done.

    FYI, I’d been watching some videos using Gaussian or Gauss-Jordan elimination to solve such systems. I’ve used that on systems in these and other Algebra 1 videos and of course I get the same answers. This one, however, gets real messy real fast IF you try for values of 1 along the principal diagonal. I tried solving just getting zeroes below the principal diagonal and back-substituting--worked fine.
    I know that Gaussian or Gauss-Jordan elimination is a bit above the level of these students-I was just curious to try it.
