I have a story for you. Well, it's more of a memory.
My high school's town had 55 residents, 112 students, two stop signs, and hundreds of cattle in the nearby feed lot. The old brick school was hemmed in on three sides by fields that changed from green to amber as the months of study trudged on.
I felt very lonely and very overwhelmed there at the same time. I was very quiet and studious. Every class period I hustled to finish all my work so I could squirrel away as many minutes as possible to read or crochet. I brought earplugs with me to focus over the din somehow created by only 12 students in my grade. No one quite knew what to do with me, but my teachers developed an implicit trust over the years that allowed me to leave the classroom at my leisure as soon as my work was done.
Every day we'd walk from the main building to the little white stucco rectangle that held our cafeteria. Between the buildings, I glanced a huge expanse of flat green field with no fence. When no one was looking, I slipped through the corridor to see what was on the other side.
The wind is so strong in my area of the country that we have to plant lines of short, scrubby trees to keep the wind from shearing all the topsoil off the farmland. For some reason, the nearest tree line was at least a mile away, and the full force of the prairie wind blew threw me, top to toes, with the same sheet of current that moved the clouds. The green went on until the cross-hatched blades shaded the horizon. Above us, a blanket of thick cyan sky bouyed a few speckled clusters of cloud.
I think we often perceive sky, earth, and weather as small because we experience them in tiny slices that brush through our buildings and lawns. I love the prairie because it is whole and uninterrupted element. There are only three things to perceive: the flat land, the thick sky, and the mountains of air they pass one another. That is all there is.
I went out there a lot until I graduated. No one ever saw me-- there were no windows on that side of the building-- and no one visited because there was "nothing" back there. It was my refuge and the one place I liked being so small. I could stand in the wind and feel it pull me through the current like a wave of water. I would sit, feeling light and tiny, watching the caravan of clouds move on the same wind that pulled my shirt taut.
Maybe I should go back there some day.

Oh my goodness this was so beautifully written I almost cried. What a little town with its cows and brick school and green fields...
The wind and sky you describe sound so amazing!! It's something I've never experienced before but I now I want to... I want to feel the wind blowing through me like a wave of water too! You're right, the sky and earth often seems small because we can only see glimpses of it through the buildings around us... Lots of times I look at the sky at sunset and see maybe a bit of pink and gold, but I can't see the sun.
I used to spend lots of time in the field behind my school as well. It wasn't windy like yours, but small and green and absolutely crawling with grasshoppers... That field was so precious to me back then, thank you for reminding me of it! And thank you for sharing this absolutely beautiful story 💕💕💕

This story was hard for me to read, but it still made sense!
I could clearly imagine what that would feel like, and it reminded me of those small moments in time that were often the most memorable😅(if that makes sense) I could relate to the feeling of wind, as if being deep out into an ocean, but peaceful and not scary…
In middle school and during recess I would lay on the concrete and look at the sky for the entire time. Just laying there looking at the sky, or closing my eyes just to really be one with the wind and the ground. It all felt so timeless.
Well, I hope I understood your story! It was very nice to read either way!

what always blows my mind with these videos is your patience. how on earth do you cut out every little paper and piece together a patterned floor?! i love to draw and write, but craft work like this is not my forte. therefore, i love to watch videos of talented people like you doing the thing they love most! what a wonderful experience your trip to miniature summer camp was. it's such a treat to meet impassioned people from all over the world. i just finished up a figure drawing class at my local college, and there were so many people with different backgrounds there. one of them was a 60 year old retired aerospace engineer! what an honor it is to work alongside a diverse body of artists.
i'm also still reeling from your recollection of diving for 3 1/2 minutes with no oxygen. what a storied life you lead!! your dedication is just so impressive. i yearn to cherish and celebrate life the way you do rather than just going through the motions. thanks for another wonderful video :)

It came out so lovely! It reminds me a lot of a computer game I used to play all the time as a kid in the 2000's, I Spy Treasure Hunt, and all the scenery and maps and treasure, so it feels very nostalgic to me! Maybe one day... the Navigator will instead live in a lovely room... with a bay window, and yellow wall paper... and a perhaps not so beautiful chair... (or maybe I'm entirely wrong, and I'll have a surprise!)
I've never seen the sea before... I'd like to see it some day. Not on my own though. If I could go, I would take my mother with me, and we'd go to the beach and museums about the sailing ships she loves.
I tried traveling alone once, when I was a bit younger... it didn't go well... We call it The Terrible Train Incident, because I tried to cross country via Amtrak. I didn't make it one night before calling my mom to come rescue me from what had become a 12+ hour panic attack. Which she did, bless her, driving another 12 hours to save me from the train station the next state over. I dunno if I was changed, more like traumatized, but I was sure tired! I slept for two days. I was so burnt out on adrenaline that I don't really remember the trip at all, but it was a very pretty stretch of Colorado, and apparently I took many pictures that I found on my phone a month later. Ruby Canyon is quite beautiful. The rocks are so red, so tall, so unlike home... I'd like to see it again, for real, under... better circumstances, haha.

Your carefulness and patience are keys to success we should all be learning. Two questions: Can you show us the grades of sandpaper you use at the various stages? @mminmakes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thank you for the lovely comment 💕 I spend a lot of time editing the video/sound so it's always wonderful to hear someone appreciate it! For sandpaper I usually use these grades: 180 for rough shaping, 220 to clean edges, 320 for final sanding. For wood finish, any paste wax will do. I'm impatient to finish the one I have so I can try some other brands, as mine seems to attract lots of dust... I also usually apply and buff out several layers over a couple of weeks, which isn't really clear in the video. It's not an instant finish 🤭 Josje's wonderful! Thank you again for watching and commenting ❤️

When I was in my late teens and early twenties I travelled all over Europe by myself. It was great, it didnt bother me being alone and I always found people who I got on with to hang around with. I used to really love going places, like Berlin and Hamburg and Amsterdam, you used to be able to get rooms by the tourist agency, it cost a few Marks or whatever and when you took the room they deducted the cost from your bill. I really enjoyed myself and even took some friends from home to Hamburg and Berlin, they were really scared about not booking in advance, but it always turned out really well. I found doing it that way was way cheaper than booking in advance. I think maybe the tourist agency had lists of cancellations and by using them you got big discounts. It really left you so much more money to go out with! I love this model❤ you put your heart into your miniatures, I love the claw feet on the chair, its beautiful! (I also get nervous commenting, but I hope that doesn’t prevent this story or memory of mine from making sense, or possibly make you smile.)
I love to build. In fact, I want to become an engineer, but I forgot what it was like to put meaning into my creations, other than for practicality.
I remember when I was younger, I would be inspired to create something that had a story, and I would find joy in sharing those tales. The moments in my room, and the hours, all felt like time was on pause. Each and every detail and placement had meaning, just to make sure the story could come to life.
I forgot what it was like to feel that way. The peace I felt in the process and the meaning behind each detail. Your videos reminded me of those moments and how special they were. I hope I can remember how to bring life into my creations from now on.
I hope you get to attend those lessons and learn more and grow! You’re already so amazing! So I pray you don’t forget how many people you’ve inspired, or how far you’ve come!

I just found your channel, and these videos are amazing! I’m starting school in a couple of days and your videos have really helped make me less nervous! I also love the way you tell your stories. It’s like I stepped into a magical fairy tale world where stories are real. I don’t exactly know how to explain it. I almost cried while watching this video and I really don’t know why. But, I think that I should share a story as well!
When I was a little kid we would spend Christmas Eve putting luminaries on people’s doorsteps at my grandparents house. Once we finished we would drive to my other grandparents house and spend the night there. Their house was always really quiet at night, and I usually listen to an audiobook while I fall asleep, so I always had trouble sleeping at their house. But I distinctly remember that every night you could hear a train from their house. I felt like I was the only person awake in the entire world, and then I would hear the sound of a train. It was comforting. I would look up at the stars and wonder what everyone in the train was doing before drifting off to sleep. Whenever I think of a calming moment, I think of the sound of a train and the deep blue colour that could be seen from that window every Christmas Eve night.
I hope you liked the story! I probably didn’t do a very good job at explaining it, but oh well! I hope everyone has a great day!

@@mminmakes I saw the strategy used by a woodworker on TH-cam called PaskMakes in a video called "Incredible coffee table build...". He made a whole coffee table with a very intricate pattern on top and had to fill in some gaps on it. It starts around the 13:30 mark on that video if you're looking for the strategy. He mixes the sawdust with wood glue, but for your miniatures, white glue would probably be fine.

My mom and I moved to the coast when I was small. She had me when she was young, so we had to move when she got into university. I didn’t like it at first- my grandparents lived back in the town where I was born and I missed their farm house and the century old orchard they had. I didn’t like my mom being so busy with school and two jobs and all the new people in our lives, but I did like the beach. No matter how busy she got with work or school, she always took me to the water at the end of the day. She’d do her homework while I poked around in tide pools or made drip castles or collected sea glass. If she wasn’t busy, she’d swim while I watched. I was scared of the deep water, the ocean was cold and huge and even the current in the shallows felt like it wanted to pull your feet out from under you. One day, she finally convinced me to go deeper with her. She put me in her arms and walked us out until her feet were just barely touching the ground then she let herself float, and me with her. Past where the ocean meets the land, you realize the waves aren’t so scary. They roll, instead of crash, and you roll with them. It only takes soft movements to keep yourself above water, and the water holds you well. The line between sea and sky is more suggestion than delineation and the sound of waves crashing against the shore sounds like the beating of some giant’s heart. I think it’s the closest I’ll ever get to flying.

      @mminmakes  หลายเดือนก่อน

This is such a beautiful story, I read it every night in bed and it makes me smile :) Your mother sounds wonderful, and the ocean seems so calm and comforting when you get out past the crashing waves 💙🌊☀️ You're right, the waves are like a heartbeat and floating with them feels like flying 💕

aah i was wondering these days when you would upload again!! this video came just at the right time hehe
also sorry but the lady who taught you MICROCROCHET when you had never crocheted before is so funny like 😭 i imagine it's like teaching someone math for the very first time and starting with the quadratic formula 😭😭😭

Yayyy just in time for your cravings hahaha.
She was SO SWEET and patient, it was honestly so satisfying to see the little granny square in the end 😂😂😂

Oh I didn’t think of it like that! That makes so much more sense, and that is pretty funny.
I think I’d mentally break down if that was my first crochet lesson though😭😭

I Love the video but I would have liked to hear you explain a little bit about what you're doing and where you got the little pieces of trim... Did you make them or buy them? If you bought them, then where did you find them? I really want to learn how to do this and more information would be helpful thanks so much!

I made everything myself for this video, all the patterns are available on my Patreon (link in description) I'll try to explain more of the process in future videos!

Where do you get this soft wood? Or is it the marital that you cut with is sharp?

    • @mminmakes
      @mminmakes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

All the wood and tools are linked in the description :) Balsa and basswood are the softest, easy to cut with a craft knife. For harder woods I use a box cutter/penknife.

I unlisted them so I could use the channel as a portfolio for my miniatures. You can still see them here: th-cam.com/play/PLLVb-gp_kFyEiR3xzNssGpL1LbzE71gyP.html but save the link as they don't appear on my public channel anymore. Thanks for the love 💕
