For me, I'll keep mixing my own contrast-alikes using the Goobertown method, but these are good to know about for sure! Thanks again for your work here.
There was a follow up to that Sword and Steel video that suggested that Green Stuff World did make things right. It sounds like there was a rapid response from the youtube community followed by a rapid response from Green Stuff World. This is not the first time I have heard of a youtuber getting caught up in a copyright issue where youtube exerted punitive measures that seemed too severe for an innocent mistake. At least this time it seems to have been resolved quickly and the resolution was deemed acceptable by the youtube creator.
The trouble was Sword and Steel didn't make any mistakes, innocent or otherwise. The takedown was initiated by GSW and was as severe as they chose it to be rather than one of TH-cam's "oopses". Their excuse was to claim they didn't know their action had consequences. It was resolved quickly only because of how quickly it blew up. GWS does apparently have a sense of irony though in naming their new paint after Army Painter Quickshade Dip.

Really good, this is your first video from you and will definitely be checking out your segested videos. My suggestion for these types of videos is not just look at bases but to see how it looks over a space marine.
What is the textured/grided paper you were using at 6:31? This looks amazing to have to make a reference sheet for all the contrast type paints in my colleciton.
It's textured plasticard from Green Stuff World I primed with White Scar primer, you can get it here for example: affiliates.waylandgames.co.uk/idevaffiliate.php?id=210&url=2931
Would you be willing/able to do a color comparison for all the dipping inks, especially because GSW web page and their own videos don't accurately show the color? Your speedpaint and contrast color comparisons are so helpful as were the 6 dipping inks you compared in this video. I'm kinda shocked there are no whites, grays, and limited browns in this range. So many teal and turquoise colors....
Thanks for the review, first time viewer here.., Bit of a noob question...what's the Contrast Medium you are using at 6.44 ? it seems to have the Citadel technical Contrast Medium label,... but in a dropper bottle?
Yeah I just poured the Contrast Medium in an empty dropper bottle for easier dosing, then peeled off the label and attached it to the dropper bottle :)
By reviving the flames on an old story you are creating traction on this video and thus your channel. That's the YT game I guess... But then again your review was solid and well done AND you answered the question about reactivation. I was almost convinced solely on the size to price ratio (plus dropper bottle) but now that I know they won't reactivate, I'm sold
@@stahly_taleofpainters If you hadn't mentioned it all, would anyone STILL be talking about this? I can see that by you just mentioning the OLD controversy, it created in the comments what you say you were trying to avoid. Have you ever mentioned GW's failures in a video about their products?
Yeah, I've seen it. Did you try it? Didn't really work for me. If you want to paint over using paint straight from the pot, there is no water involved...
@@stahly_taleofpainters You need to thin the paint you wanna use with the speedpaint Medium, and have to make sure the brush you are using is dry too. I have two brushes when I am painting and layering with speedpaint. If I finish with one paint and have cleaned my brush I put it aside and let it dry before using it again. No activation problem so far.
No, but there is another video by The Pickle Jar who tried that. Ink-based paints like Contrast and these Dipping Inks act lose their shading effect when fired through an airbrush (unless you spray them on really thick).
I don't get why flat white primer is the default to test these sorts of paints over. I get wanting to keep it simple, but absolutely all of these paints really come alive when painted over a zenithal undercoat.
@@stahly_taleofpainters Maybe. Though, I'd argue that showing it over a gradient is both more honest to the end user in terms of letting them know how best to use it, as well as giving more information by showing how it covers over lights and darks. If nothing else, I think it's more helpful than having a second/third neutral canvas of grey and beige.
@@tims5298 That's a great way to do it. I personally like a zenithal spray of liquitex white ink best, but airbrushes aren't available to everyone, and it won't give you as much of an illustrative feel as a drybrush.
I could not care less about the legal drama with GSW. GW has been causing legal drama with youtubers and fan art makers for years. Anyone still buying GW products while whining about GSW is a hypocrite and should just shut the fuck up about it, which is literally all of them. That being said, I ordered the whole line of these paints. Contrasts are a huge part of my process, and I tried speed paints to replace them but honestly, even after mixing in a bit of matte varnish into each pot to stop the reactivation issues, the colors simply aren't as vibrant as contrast paints. After all the videos I have seen of these dipping Inks, they are exactly what I have been hoping for. No more over priced contrast paints for me. Hopefully after I show off what these can do locally my local LGS will attempt to carry them.
Has anyone trying their hulky green? Hows does it compare to the Dark Angels Green from GW? Also I assume this would go well with washes and oil inks for example?
Hulky Green is more like Warp Lightning, closest Dipping Ink would be Ork Flesh but it's a bit more desaturated than Dark Angels Green. I'm testing the remaining colours for a second video!
@@stahly_taleofpainters One can achieve similar with various mediums and flow improver, etc. It won't be the same but it doesn't need to be - you would get used to painting with your personal mix the same way you get used to painting with contrast, speedpaints or whatever your poison is. I'll give you that it is convenient when bulk painting but you could mix up dropper bottles for your army and go from there - which people already do using mini paints. Most other painting types mix paint, particularly as painters get better. It seems less common to have thousands of paints (like mini painters do) and rather have a handful of paints and go from there. I might be less harsh if GW hadn't decided to jump on this "single pigment" train with quite.. strange phrase choices for why you would want the paint but I digress. Nice video btw - one thought in a similar vein to my initial comment - the bottles/volume is larger but is there much "more" in there or is it all water? Could you somehow dry out a bottle of each to compare how much "stuff" you are actually getting extra in the large bottle.
Thanks for this Test. But how are you not seeing the glaring differences in this compared to Contrast paints? They dont evenly pool in recesses. Look at all these white spots in the recess lines. Also it drys glossy where it pooled. Absolutely unusable.
I also think that Contrast is a nose ahead overall, but Dipping Inks are far from "unusable". All the ones I have tested dry matt, actually much more matt than many Contrast colours, and the white spots are so microscopic that they are invisible to the naked eye. Most people wouldn't notice. For the price, I can definitely live with it.
Over two years ago they trademarked the term "Colorshift" for their products in Spain. Only in Spain. Vallejo released their own line of Colorshifting Paints and were forced to change the name to "The Shifters". Sword and Steele made a review of the Vallejo product that, at the time, was still labeled as "Colorshift" and GSW had the video taken down in a hasty move to combat the trademark issue. The video was allowed to be put back up as it was an error in judgment from GSW that never should have happened. I don't see why Stahly would bring this up over two years after it was resolved with even the content creator stating that they had an acceptable resolution. He is saying in replies that this video isn't about GW and that to paint the full picture he had to talk about the controversy about Green Stuff World business practices, I disagree. He could have just left it alone entirely and dragged up the past. The issue I have is that he is directly comparing paints to GW Contrast and to my knowledge has never mentioned their terrible business practices in any of their videos. I guess he needs to stay favorable in the eyes of the GW Mega Corp. Really feels like he is allowing a smaller company to be punched down on.
Well if you follow the Dakkadakka thread there is also a link to a video that paints a very negative image of GSW, regarding copying and trademarking ideas of others, but that was not the point of my video. I just felt the need to touch the subject briefly and get it out of the way as it seems to come up whenever people mention GSW. I hope you watched the video to the end, as I feel it ends on a positive note.
bringing up "controversies" regarding GSW without elaborating on the topic seems kinda strange to me. i know of what you speak, that old video by Sword and Steel where she tried some colour-shifting paint and got a copyright-strike on her channel or something. man that was a while ago, wasn't it? besides, wasn't that whole thing a mistake to begin with; something GSW resolved very quickly? like i said, it's been quite a while since that video (years?) so i don't remember the details. anyways, do you point out all the flaws with Games Workshop at the start of all of your videos (first-time watcher here)? because if GSW has "controversies" surrounding the company, as you put it, i would love to hear what you call Games Workshop's practices...
ok, so after watching the full video i'm a bit pissed. at the end you again mentioned GSW "business practices", yet nothing about Games Workshop at all? what!? Games Workshop steamroll over youtube-channels left and right, claim monopoly on anything related to warhammer, declare fan-animations illegal, and basically employ slave-labour in their animations department - yet, nothing of this is even close to whatever GSW are doing? i must have missed the part where GSW produce their paints from the blood of babies, to make them seem like such an evil corporation next to Games Workshop. pity, because the rest of the video was really well made and i enjoyed your review of the products.
This is not a video about Games Workshop, but Green Stuff World's Dipping Inks, and to paint the whole picture I had to address some of the concerns that have been out in the community. What you do with this information is really up to you, so no hard feelings.
The SS girl was being a drama queen and playing the "damsel in distress" and "oh I am being victimized by that big bad company man" causing all the feckless, basement-dwelling, milquetoast, sycophants to flock to her whine hoping to curry favors by pretending to rally and offer "a great unwashed mob" to light the torches and "defend" (read:smear GSW) her against a rather hapless, techno-inept, middle-aged Spaniard that owns GSW (reminiscent of Manuel, "oh, he's from Barcelona" of Fawlty Towers fame). She actually benefited from it by being contacted by Vallejo and offered favor there. So she suffered no loss of any kind and has successfully tarnished GSW's reputation, costing them short and long- term financial loss, by rallying the unwashed against them when they acted within their legal rights in Spain and the EU. This pot was needlessly stirred again by an unnecessary drama-rant by Discourse Minis (once enjoyable, now drama central, resulting in subscription loss) against GSW. Tempests in very insignificant teacups over, ultimately, nothing meaningful. Though, had the "villian" been GW, they would have whined, and that would have been it. But since GSW tried to fix things and ultimately make nice, everyone smells weakness and blood, and circles. The sci-fi/fantasy side of the hobby can be so high-handed, drama-filled and pathetic these days. (Have watched it grow in size yet decline in character over the past 50 years!) EDIT: Stanly takes an understandable, self-preservation tack by emphasizing his neutrality hoping to avoid the overreactive, unthinking, immature emotionality of the responses by "unwashed masses" and their smear tactics and social manipulation directed toward people that choose not to agree with them in their agenda against GSW (REMEMBER kids: demand tolerance, yet give one) and exercising freedom to do as they wish with their own money, in their own hobby, in their own lives - contrary to the "unwashed masses" (sjws) of the toy painting hobby. 🤪🎅

....there video colours are different from yours cause there colour balance is terrible. Like you should never judge the colour of paint based on a video. Even Games Workshops colours can look wildly different in real life.
nothing worse than games workshop taking down all the fan animations. the person in question got massive exposure on youtube so it worked out well for everyone in the end
Actually, so many people were conflating this whole situation, I remember it vividly because I deleted my Twitter account due to the inability of people to see that her TH-cam channel wasn't hurt in the slightest, and in fact, benefited by a subscriber growth of over 10x. This "bad publicity" turned out very well for her. To continue to make it out as a small business that really wasn't well versed in law, regarding trademark and copyright infringement nonmalisciously attempting to protect their brand is completely unfair and very disingenuous. The same people who had this problem are the same ones who support games workshop who employs much stricter cease and desist practices, most times among people not attempting to even make a dollar off their ideas or creations. Perfect examples are animated videos and original fan stories. Also, so many people who never even heard of or purchased from GSW, and weren't even involved in this specific hobby, felt the need to get involved and comment without seeing the benefit on the TH-camrs behalf, and even being so blind as to disregard it, continued to make inflammatory comments about this business, potentially causing it to have to have closed it's doors as sales could have potentially plummeted, which would have resulted in the employees losing jobs, fans of their products no longer being able to obtain their wonderful products, and so on. Before you continue to post such extraneous inflammatory statements about a company, think about how you yourself would react if you were in their shoes with the limited trademark knowledge they may have had? While you may not have put the specifics in your own personal comments, you sure are quick to throw others under the bus and allow their comments to speak on your behalf, in a very cowardly fashion might I add. Either put your opinion out there on a dead issue that resulted in benefit for the TH-camr, or let it go. I mean, besides, if you're really that upset by their business practices, why did you purchase their product to do a review? For your own personal gain with views?
Well, first, thanks for the time you put into this comment. I reviewed these products because I reviewed every "one coat" paint so far, and there haven't been many review of these Dipping Inks yet. I tried to address the matter as neutral as possible, sorry to hear you found my comment "inflammatory". If you follow the thread you'll also find a link to this video: th-cam.com/video/qhIEilBD-mQ/w-d-xo.html (it's in German but has English subtitles). Apparently the bad rep comes not only from the TH-cam copyright strike. Again, I don't want to badmouth anyone, I aim for a fair and neutral coverage, but I thought it should be addressed to paint the whole picture.
This is pretty weak. GSW has a history of using legal threats against competitors. This is not the only occasion - feel free to take a look at the stories outlined later in that thread. The fact that you are vehemently against sharing information about the company is very telling. You have seen that information and arrived at your own conclusion. Why don't you want other people to have that opportunity?
@@MrTonypace what is it telling of, that people can't let a small company benefit and protect their own stuff while larger corporations practically get away with murder when it comes to copyright and trademarks? That people can speak with their dollar when they weren't ever going to spend one with said company? That the fans of the company and it's products should be made to suffer because someone who posted a TH-cam video was""hurt" by their knee jerk reaction? Pick a topic, elaborate.
@@MrTonypace (part 2 to my comment) In Fact Tony, do you believe I'm a shill for the company? Do you think I have some benefit of coming to their defense? Do you seem to believe that they've employed some discount on my behalf for commenting in favor of them? Do you think I'm even from spain, where the trademark was filed? Am I some undercover spy trying to take down anyone and everyone who's commenting against an over two year old issue? Sincerely, what benefit do you think I'm actually receiving for saying all this? The truth is, none at all. I'm tired of people trying to "Cancel" others because feelings were hurt and nothing bad ever came from the initial action. It's not fair to companies like GSW to be scrutinized with such a fine microscope on the misdoings of probably one individual in the company who made a knee jerk reaction, pushed a button, and sounded the alarms for a video that wasn't all that entertaining to begin with, nor did it receive many views until AFTER all the hustle and bustle about this situation to begin with. Should you look into her channel and her metrics (sword and something, I don't remember the name of her channel), she saw growth of subscribers from 5k subs, to over 50k subs in less than a week. She clearly wasn't impacted by it in a negative way, so to continue to lambast a company that really had no negative recourse on the aforementioned youtube channel is completely unfair and unjust. If you'd like to talk about other nefarious business practices they've done, site them, don't expect me to do the leg work looking for negative items about them. You're the one making the comment saying they've utilized other less than savory business practices against other individiuals/companies. Show the proof. Have all your facts straight on the issue, because if you say something libelous about them, know they could very well come after you if it hurts their bottom line because apparently you truly believe they're just out to screw everyone over. Lastly, do you know spain's trademark laws? I know I for one don't, and maybe within their guidelines, they were in the right for flagging the video. Don't assume that their laws are the same as they are here in America (yes, I'm american). I don't even know the trademark laws HERE, but one thing people online like to do is assume they know better than someone of authority. I
It is interesting that you point out strongly the wrong doings of one company when you review their products but then choose to turn a blind eye when reviewing the products of another company and the wrong doings they have done. It would be one thing if you choose to treat all companies the same in your reviews and point out their wrong doings, however this is not the path you choose. The unevenness of the way this was handled, does cast serious doubts in regards to any review you do both in the present, the past and any future reviews you choose to do. If you have such a personal bias or hatred against a company(which is what it appears like here) then choose not to review their products. Otherwise treat all companies the same and point them all out when they have had awful business practices.
My channel is not about doom and gloom, and usually I try to focus on the positive and enjoyable side of the hobby, I just felt the need to touch the subject briefly as it seems to come up whenever people mention GSW. I hope you watched the video to the end, as I feel it ends on a positive note.
@@stahly_taleofpainters This video was front loaded with as you stated "doom and gloom". As a random person when I saw that the first thing I think of is "why should I bother watching the rest of the video, this person has already made it quite clear how they feel towards this company and their products based on the tone they have presented." Not only did you not provide a fair review of the product by front loading this in the manner you did but you also dissuaded anyone from actually wanting to watch through the whole video and I am sure that was not your intention. A blanket statement such as "Like many companies this company is not without missteps and complaints, I encourage all people to do their own research when making any decision to buying products" towards the end of the video would have avoided the front loading of this "doom and gloom". If you had concerns over a business practice there were/are better ways to handle it and bringing up those concerns after the review has been completed would have been the best course of action. I skimmed through the first minutes of other reviews that you did of products from other companies (one of who is well known for their mishandling of both content creators and consumers) and at no time did you point out or call out the issues with those companies at the beginning of the video. I will wrap it up this way: You as the presenter sets the tone for the rest of the video, how you set that tone depends on how engaged or bored your audience is and how interested they are to hear what you have to say and what they actually take away from the video as a whole.
@@ericdavis4964 Stahly stated in a reply to another comment that he was trying to avoid the comment section making comments like "Yeah, but GSW is a garbage company" or "They are mean to content creators".
I just paid 4.50$ US per bottle @ Green Stuff World!
Not yet planned but it would be a really good reference. I see what I can do :)
Well, if I hadn't mention it then every other comment would have been "but did you know what GSW did" so yeah :D
@@stahly_taleofpainters If you hadn't mentioned it all, would anyone STILL be talking about this? I can see that by you just mentioning the OLD controversy, it created in the comments what you say you were trying to avoid. Have you ever mentioned GW's failures in a video about their products?
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
I like the way you pronounce "Turquoise". In the States, we say "Turr-Koyzz".
The Secret to Speedpaint Reactivation is using the Speedpaint Medium and avoiding using water at all costs. Dana Howl made a good video on that.
@@stahly_taleofpainters I never had issues in over 100 minis. Using vallejo airbrush primer and not the rattle can 30usd+ GW Stuff helps.
Hi Stahly,
Do you try this new paints with an airbrush?
Thanks for the video(s) 😉
No, but there is another video by The Pickle Jar who tried that. Ink-based paints like Contrast and these Dipping Inks act lose their shading effect when fired through an airbrush (unless you spray them on really thick).
I don't get why flat white primer is the default to test these sorts of paints over. I get wanting to keep it simple, but absolutely all of these paints really come alive when painted over a zenithal undercoat.
Yeah that's true, but I think for review purposes you need to have a neutral "canvas" to better see what the paint is capable of (and what not).
I paint black and dry brush light grey then add my speed paint
No link on controversy details?
Added!
If you want to paint over or glaze the speed paint range you must add a small amout of speed paint medium to stop it reactivating.
Has anyone trying their hulky green? Hows does it compare
to the Dark Angels Green from GW? Also I assume this would go well with washes and oil inks for example?
Hulky Green is more like Warp Lightning, closest Dipping Ink would be Ork Flesh but it's a bit more desaturated than Dark Angels Green. I'm testing the remaining colours for a second video!
The giga chad of inks
great review
If I got this right, then these dipping inks are the most expensive per bottle, but cheapest per volume?
No, Contrast are the most expensive per bottle & volume :)
@@stahly_taleofpainters : Thanks!

GSW business practices? Ah what did I miss?
How many colors are there though? 24, but they don’t have a good flesh tone.
24 :)
Why people don't just slowly build a caddy of artist inks and then mix their own I will never know.
Convenience probably. And I think Contrast is all about its rather unique medium and its flow properties, not about the colours/pigmentation.
Could you somehow dry out a bottle of each to compare how much "stuff" you are actually getting extra in the large bottle.
well a look in to thanks fore the in fo and hek will sub and see as post new
Citadel is sweating madly right now. Not sure if the author of the video will receive the next citadel in the future ahah
Nah, it's like glue, cutters etc, most people still buy GW. But alternatives are growing for sure.
Sir, thank you for this. I specially love the fact that you got a written version for us people with some hearing problems.

I don't see Dark Angels greenish anywhere :(
Da green by gw none contrast might as well be contrast paint its two colours anyway

That was a good review, thanks!
As for the Dakka Dakka controversy, looks like a typical Internet tempest in a teacup again...
What's the deal with GSW's business practices?
Follow the Dakkadakka thread and read it to the end.
@@stahly_taleofpainters Thanks, and thank you for the video, very useful :)
I read it as contraseptive killer...
these where very confusing 8 minutes
Awesome
Thanks for this Test. But how are you not seeing the glaring differences in this compared to Contrast paints? They dont evenly pool in recesses. Look at all these white spots in the recess lines. Also it drys glossy where it pooled. Absolutely unusable.
I also think that Contrast is a nose ahead overall, but Dipping Inks are far from "unusable". All the ones I have tested dry matt, actually much more matt than many Contrast colours, and the white spots are so microscopic that they are invisible to the naked eye. Most people wouldn't notice. For the price, I can definitely live with it.
I'm actually sad because this product looks good but I can't abide their business practices.
Green Stuff World business practices?
@@ecMonify I also made these same points, and I agree with you wholeheartedly. I especially love your "blood of babies" comment lmao
(Have watched it grow in size yet decline in character over the past 50 years!)
EDIT: Stanly takes an understandable, self-preservation tack by emphasizing his neutrality hoping to avoid the overreactive, unthinking, immature emotionality of the responses by "unwashed masses" and their smear tactics and social manipulation directed toward people that choose not to agree with them in their agenda against GSW (REMEMBER kids: demand tolerance, yet give one) and exercising freedom to do as they wish with their own money, in their own hobby, in their own lives - contrary to the "unwashed masses" (sjws) of the toy painting hobby. 🤪🎅
You don't know how to use speed paints if you think that's still an issue
These Dipping Inks are permanently 4.5€ (never seen the "sales" on their site stop) and I'd love to be able to get a couple of them, but most of the essential ones are out of stock
....there video colours are different from yours cause there colour balance is terrible. Like you should never judge the colour of paint based on a video. Even Games Workshops colours can look wildly different in real life.
What's wrong with their business practices?
Wondering too
Please follow the link I put in the description.
nothing worse than games workshop taking down all the fan animations. the person in question got massive exposure on youtube so it worked out well for everyone in the end
@@stahly_taleofpainters The Tabletop Workshop video shows way better what kind of company GSW is than the Dakkadakka post.
As a random person when I saw that the first thing I think of is "why should I bother watching the rest of the video, this person has already made it quite clear how they feel towards this company and their products based on the tone they have presented."
Not only did you not provide a fair review of the product by front loading this in the manner you did but you also dissuaded anyone from actually wanting to watch through the whole video and I am sure that was not your intention.
