Loved the ending. He’s back. The mentor was inspired by the student.

The point of the sequel was for Eddie to get back what was taken from him at the end of 'The Hustler' -his talent. The mob forced him to either play for them or quit so Eddie ( for reasons to do with a dead girl and his guilt ) decided to walk away from pool. But, as he says in the sequel; 'It was over for me before it really got started.' The point is Eddie wants to be a pool player one last time but has lost his hunger. He sees that hunger in Vincent Lauria and so takes him 'on the road' and becomes his mentor. But this is the rarest of films in that the mentor is using his pupil rather than teaching him. Eddie hangs around Vincent until Vincent's hunger is 'bled' ( as Eddie puts it ) back into him and then Eddie dumps Vincent and goes off on his own.
When Vincent realizes he was used by his supposed mentor, he gets revenge by throwing a match against Eddie and then letting him know it. Eddie's pride about becoming a top player is dashed and it 'stings like a bitch.' So Eddie demands Vincent play him again and this time play for real. The film ends without knowing who won the match because it doesn't matter. Eddie has his hunger back and his old talent. He is a pool player again and that is all that matters. Eddie's 'victory' is his winning back the talent, hunger and career that was taken from him as a young man. Whether he beats Vincent is irrelevant. He is once again the man he was supposed to be. Knowing who won the rematch is trivial compared to that victory of being true to yourself and being the person you are supposed to be.

I always took the ending as Paul Newman, teaching and at the same time using Vincent as an opportunity to get himself back in the game and "playing the chump" the whole time until he knew the right time to get back in the game full time, which is why he said "I'm back" at the end

After what happened to Fast Eddie in the first movie (The Hustler), I think it would be extremely difficult for anyone to beat him twice, since he said: "How can I lose?"

The ending is actually the best part of the movie. The editing is all over and it feels like a lot was cut.

I have been disappointed for the past couple years not hearing any buzz on another sequel. Especially after a Top Gun Maverick. This needs to get under way now or it'll be a huge disappointment for anyone that was young enough to appreciate both The Hustler and The Color of Money.

Yes, Cruise should definitely consider a sequel. I've been talking about possibilities for years. Take care.

The reason why the ending is perfect, is because of a line used earlier in the movie by Newman. When Carmen asked who's the best, Newman response with the balls roll funny for everyone and the only thing that matters is who has the most money in the end. Obviously I did not quote the scene, but anyone who plays knows how true it is that the balls can roll funny and make you loose the game.
The 3rd installment should feature Cruise owning a pool hall or a custom cue maker in one. He notices a young player(between 10-16 years old)with natural talent and he teaches him how to turn pro and not a hustler. This would shed a better light on pool and also is true to the sport. I don't think you can find the same money in hustling today as was in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's, plus most hustlers probably wish they could be on pro tours vs trying to find that big hustle.

No one wants to see Eddie lose to Vince and visa versa. Leave the ending alone! It would be nice to shed Tom Cruise as the mentor if a 3rd instalment comes out.

Good comments by all, a sequel should be made, the story can be taken anywhere, I'd personally love to see the balabushka again as I own one and enjoy playing regularly even though the movie cue was a balabushka replica made by joss cues I believe, thanks.

You can go down a rabbit hole with who played who.
    1) Eddie played Vincent, pushing him to do things he knew he wouldn't do to manipulate him. Especially with losing on purpose to Forrest Whitaker's character to create the illusion he was over the hill.
    2) Vincent played Eddie, targeting him from the beginning through John Turturro's character and purposely ignoring Eddie's advice to look stupid. All so Vincent could lure him in to eventually take him for what he was worth.
I think that's what makes the movie so good is that it's left ambiguous in either direction. I'll always ask myself, "Why did Vincent want to go with Eddie if he just intended to always ignore his advice and do what he wanted?" That's why it seemed like one big hustle on his part to take down Eddie.

As Eddie said..."Straight pool is pool." He would have trashed the kid in 14.1.

Also, his t-shirt is a work shirt and not something he wears because he's cocky.

Great video, I enjoyed it and all that you put into it. However, I have to respectfully disagree, I love the ending and here's the reason why. We only realize at the very end that the story was really about Eddie, not Vince. Although Vince's character changed, Eddie's character arc was bigger and therefore makes him the "lead" in my opinion. What's great about the ending is that it's a set up, you think you need to see the match between the two but it's not about that, it's about Eddie's redemption and once he say's "I'm back", the movie is over.

Not sure this ending needs explaining, it's very obvious.

I got the script, i'll give it away, just make it right........ It is set now, Vince made millions in tech stocks in the 90's.... He is with his family in Florida on vacation, and the hotel bar has a pool table with a young hustler who hustled Vincints son out the same way Forest Witikers Charecter did to Paul Newman in CoM... So when Vincient hears of it he plays him and gets smoked 3 times........ The overweight Teen kid hustler turns out to be 'Minnesota Fat's' great grandson..... But you dont find that out till the end of the movie... Lots of cool events in the story, but that will co$t you to find out the rest......

Stupid ending to a stupid movie. The Hustler was a great film. This was just an excuse for Tom Cruise to be himself. All copies of this movie should be destroyed.
