On July 18, 1989, actress Rebecca Schaeffer (TV’s My Sister Sam) was preparing for an audition later that day for the role of Mary Corleone. Hearing a knock at her apartment door (likely thinking it would be something like a screenplay delivery), Rebecca Schaeffer was instead faced with an insane fan, who shot and murdered her, reportedly with her Godfather Part III screenplay laying nearby. Winona Ryder as Mary would have been amazing. While Sofia Coppola didn’t do a great job, she’s not a professional actress, so her performance is gonna be a little rough. Fantastic video as always.
I feel sorry for her, it seems like she was literally just dragged into it because she was on set. A lot of people who were involved with making The Godfather have said it’s an inaccurate account of the events and it gives too much credit to Al Ruddy, who had a hand in making the show
I ironically just finished watching the trilogy about a week ago for the first time (after being bashed for it my entire life) and I absolutely loved Vinnie and wish he would have gotten to appear in another movie
Ahhh I look forward to your videos every Saturday. I’m happy it’s not a comic book franchise this time. I always lose in the voting polls. FYI, there still great when you discussed the failed attempt at Comic book films.
Great video. I always felt something was off about part 3 - it just really lacks the attention to detail the previous two films have. The point you made about the costuming and hairstyles sums it up really
My thoughts about what was discussed: *Leone's Godfather Film would almost certainly be even more negative towards Vito, Michael and the rest of the Mafia compared to what we got. Mainly because One Upon A Time In America portrayed organised crime in a very negative way. *I'm not entirely sure if Brando could have successfully portrayed a younger Vito for various reasons. Not the least the fact he looked too old for the part. *I would have loved to see the original Godfather Part III proposal be made, because the plot is interesting enough for someone to make a good film out of it. *Stallone should have taken up the offer for The Godfather Part III, mainly because it would have further boosted his career after making Rocky and the first Rambo film. *There is also another reason why The Godfather Part IV shouldn't be made, which is that Coppola himself wouldn't be the one to direct it.
I think Godfather 3 would have backfired on Stallone. There was already a feeling that he was getting ahead of himself thinking making Rocky put up him up there with Scorsese.
@@davidjames579 Stallone was capable of making a good film though; although to be fair, he's never done anything like the Godfather in his entire career. I would also admit that other than Coppola himself, Martin Scorsese would have been the best director for Part III.
@@MrSmith1984 he got flack for his sequel to Saturday Night Fever (itself a watered down Mean Streets according to some), so I can't imagine what he would have got for a Godfather sequel. Luckily Scorsese had his own Mafia film in 1990.
@@davidjames579 The positive on the other hand would be that he wouldn't have been the sole screenwriter for Part III. Mainly because Puzo would almost certainly be involved in writing the script So a Stallone Part III film would have depended instead on his portrayal as Michael's Son. There is another problem with such a film however, which is that Stallone is only 6 years younger than Pacino.
The Godfather 1 and 2 is the actual story. Both 3 and 4 feels like a epilogue. 3 the death of Michael, and 4 the destruction/end of the family. I wish part 2 got the old man Michael ending because it feels more like a definitive ending for the whole saga.
I believe that The Godfather is the greatest piece of cinema of all time!!! It's so realistic that you forget that your actually watching a film? This is transformational and thank god Coppola knew what he wanted and fought for it like a mobster!!!🖤❤🖤❤🖤❤
Another couple of interesting early directing maybes for Scorsese: He asked his friend Paul Schrader if he could direct his script The Yakuza, a detective story set in Japan. The studio however said no, and went with the more experienced Sydney Pollack. Scorsese doing a film about the Japanese Mafia sounds fascinating. In 1969, Scorsese, fresh off his first feature (Who's That Knocking At My Door? (1968) held the screen rights for a year for Phillip K Dick's novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? His friend and ongoing collaborator Jay Cocks spent that time developing a screenplay, After the rights lapsed, the film would later be shot and released as Blade Runner.
Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone was a fitting epilogue for the films, but even that couldn't hide all the problems that had been plaguing production from the start. I don't know if Part IV would have been on par with the first two films, but it would have been better conceptually than its predecessor and a proper conclusion to the Corleone Family Saga.
Godfather 4 sounds that it would have been really good. As for the alternate 3rd one with the CIA conspiracy, I think it could have had a great mirroring and contrasting of Michael and Anthony as well as the era of their crime family. Michael left the family to fight in WW2 as a Marine and came back to help the family, meanwhile Anthony was in the Navy and later CIA before coming back to the family for help. 1940s had the family at their perceived height but with heavy competition. Meanwhile the 60s and 70s saw the family at the height of their expansion and influence, their monetary and power “golden age” where they are in a position to be needed to help Anthony where before Michael was needed to help the family.
I remember hearing about the rumored Part IV movie back in the late 90s fresh off of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Titanic fame. It was a joke in a Jay Leno monologue: “It’s going to be called Godfather IV: sorry about Part III”
I always wondered why the Clamenza actor had made the biggest payday on the first movie. Now it makes sense with the studio requiring Brando to take a pay cut, and the rest of the cast being unknown or mostly only known in the theatre.
“the only way I'd do it was if they'd let me film 'Abbott and Costello Meet the Godfather'- that would have been fun.” Francis Ford Coppola…. Great content as always Bullets and Blockbusters
I absolutely adore the late great James Khan. His real life quotes and soundbites are hilariously legendary as well. Leo playing young Sonny would've worked. No guarantee film would've, but Leo would be legit regardless. Like Andy in Part III where he transcended the spotty material and gargantuan creative missteps. He could have had a spin off series just him he was so stellar.
I knew Carmine Caridi.....he said Puzo was hot on him for Sonny......he told me he tested with Duvall and Tony Lo Bianco who was testing for Michael.....from the neck up Caridi was perfect...but in the book, he was only 6 feet and strongly built...like Rocky Marciano
Wow I never knew that Godfather Pt 3 was meant to be set in the late 70's, I always thought it was set in the 90's. That speaks volumes about how little Coppola cared about this film, to not even make it look period accurate
I can’t believe that he forgot to mention about The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone! Other than that, I am glad that Mario Puzo wrote his best selling novels until his death.
Speaking of Sofia Coppola, you should do a Bullets & Blockbusters episode on her unmade film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's *"THE LITTLE MERMAID"* which she was to direct under Universal Pictures & Working Title Films and would have starred Ethan Hawke & Uma Thurman's daughter Maya as the titular character.
Seriously I would love to see DiCaprio as a brutal mafia boss. He’s great as a good guy in movies, but he’s awesome as a villain, it’s why I love Wolf on Wall Street.
I like knowing that studio interference was always a thing, and the big wigs have always been morons who think they know better but are consistently wrong. Imagine the first Godfather without Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Marlon Brando. Btw, this is another brilliant episode, you deserve so many more subscribers.
Up and coming sitcom actress Rebecca Schaeffer was cast in the role of the daughter, was actually waiting for the script to arrive at her house, when she was gunned down by an obsessed fan.
Although Part III was a bomb, Part IV sounded like it could’ve had potential!! Only if different people were at the top of certain studios; making the choices.

Robert Evans should be a template for what a studio head should be. So many classic films were only made because he believed in them and let the artists do their work. If it's true that Castellano didn't think that Clemenza would betray the Corleones I agree. I think the movie would have been stronger if he'd be in it, just as GF III would have been infinitely better with Tom Hagen. Still no matter how many times I've watched Godfather II, I could never see Clemenza playing the role that eventually became Frank Pantangelli even though it was weird Pantagelli's name never came up in the first film. Also bless Pacino for holding out for a better screenplay; if only more actors would take more pride in their work and demand better material.

She said yes because she didn't want to let down her father (who of course needed the movie to pay off his debts). He really should have tried to get a professional and experienced young actress, even at short notice. Never mind Julia Roberts, what about her co-star from Pretty Woman, Laura San Giacomo. She's Italian!
Sophia’s perf may have been “rough,” but it was compelling and credible as an awkward teen. The unintended murder of her character was shockingly memorable.
Bullets and Blockbusters, you have one the best channels of all time I always look forward to your videos, I hope one day you could cover Kubrick’s Napoleon movie or the unmade Eastern Promises sequel
Thank you! Both are on the to do list
I second the Eastern Promises sequel.
0:35 Highly recommend watching the miniseries "The Offer." It goes into making The Godfather from Mario Puzo writing the book to the movie get released. Its pretty good.
Could imagine Orson Welles as Vito Corleone, he campaigned hard for the role.
That video was, in itself, epic. Thank you!
Thank you
A great way of analyzing the film.
Great video. I always felt something was off about part 3 - it just really lacks the attention to detail the previous two films have. The point you made about the costuming and hairstyles sums it up really
My thoughts about what was discussed:
*Leone's Godfather Film would almost certainly be even more negative towards Vito, Michael and the rest of the Mafia compared to what we got.
@@davidjames579
Stallone was capable of making a good film though; although to be fair, he's never done anything like the Godfather in his entire career.
@@davidjames579
The positive on the other hand would be that he wouldn't have been the sole screenwriter for Part III. Mainly because Puzo would almost certainly be involved in writing the script
So a Stallone Part III film would have depended instead on his portrayal as Michael's Son.
There is another problem with such a film however, which is that Stallone is only 6 years younger than Pacino.
@@MrSmith1984 I think the video said John Travolta was going to play Michael's son. It appears Stallone was only going to direct and write.
Great video man. Keep up the great work!
Another banger
Keep up the good work man you're easily one of my favorite channels around right now 💪💪💪
I appreciate that! Thanks!!!
The Godfather never needed a PT.4 - Shit, some would say it didn’t need a PT.3 but the idea of continuing the franchise is interesting.
Terry Rossio’s rejected script for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 would make a great video
Damn, Dude... this is like your Godfather. Well done.
The Godfather 1 and 2 is the actual story. Both 3 and 4 feels like a epilogue. 3 the death of Michael, and 4 the destruction/end of the family. I wish part 2 got the old man Michael ending because it feels more like a definitive ending for the whole saga.
Wow honestly godfather 4 sounds so good!
What I find interesting about Godfather 3 is that it's basically the original Godfather but if it had all gone wrong.
Great video. I liked the longer format as well.
Thanks!
I've been waiting for this video. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the amazing video ❤
I believe that The Godfather is the greatest piece of cinema of all time!!! It's so realistic that you forget that your actually watching a film? This is transformational and thank god Coppola knew what he wanted and fought for it like a mobster!!!🖤❤🖤❤🖤❤
I agree. You feel like you lived a lifetime as someone else watching it. It’s hard to put into words.
Some of your best researching in this video, keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
I know it depends on the info you can get but please make your videos around the same length. Love your videos bullets keep it up
I remember hearing about the rumored Part IV movie back in the late 90s fresh off of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Titanic fame.
Sonny is my favorite Godfather character, so it stinks we missed a movie where Leonardo Caprio played a young version of him, that would of be cool
💯
I absolutely adore the late great James Khan. His real life quotes and soundbites are hilariously legendary as well. Leo playing young Sonny would've worked. No guarantee film would've, but Leo would be legit regardless. Like Andy in Part III where he transcended the spotty material and gargantuan creative missteps. He could have had a spin off series just him he was so stellar.
Ditto 💯
Leo would've been awful in that role.

I actually love the concept of Godfather Part IV and it’s a shame that Puzo died before the script could be completed
This is one of the most concise summations I’ve seen… Up there with @CineRanter
My favorite channel. Do ya thing
Yes it's here!!
Can you do Gammel Del Toro’s unproduced at the mountains of madness?
This!
Speaking of Sofia Coppola,
you should do a Bullets & Blockbusters episode on her unmade film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's
*"THE LITTLE MERMAID"* which she was to direct under Universal Pictures & Working Title Films and would have starred Ethan Hawke & Uma Thurman's daughter Maya as the titular character.
Part 4 could have been a masterpiece 👑💯
I know it's been discussed on other channels, but would love to see the Lost Dune film that was supposed to be made in the 70s.
I did that one too :)
@@Bulletsandblockbusters sorry only discovered your channel recently, my bad
All good!

I laughed my ass off at the mention of Puzo buying a book, and it's first step was to read his book, then he threw away the book. *Gold * 🤣🤣
Here's an unpopular opinion: Godfather III was a great movie. I liked it and thank FFC for fighting to make great movies.
I prefer the original too. I didn't like the Coda one. They cut too much.
Sorry, and francis making pizza. Your killing it.
Seriously I would love to see DiCaprio as a brutal mafia boss. He’s great as a good guy in movies, but he’s awesome as a villain, it’s why I love Wolf on Wall Street.
Without Coppola and the cast who was in the trilogy… it would have become another forgotten movie.
Coppola is a genius.
I'm gonna be rewatching The Godfather in preparation for Megalopolis
You should do Chinatown, The Two Jakes & what Chinatown 3 would've been.
Seems to be a pretty consistent theme unfortunately. And thank you as always!!!
Bro your talking style is very musical
Up and coming sitcom actress Rebecca Schaeffer was cast in the role of the daughter, was actually waiting for the script to arrive at her house, when she was gunned down by an obsessed fan.
Can You Please Do What Could’Ve Been: Ridley Scott’s I Am Legend 🙏
Although Part III was a bomb, Part IV sounded like it could’ve had potential!! Only if different people were at the top of certain studios; making the choices.
We must have a Godfather IV

The Godfather to me is a true American classic!
Also bless Pacino for holding out for a better screenplay; if only more actors would take more pride in their work and demand better material.
ooh the guy behind the Fistful of Dollars was originally tasked to make the Godfather neat
