I saw The Matrix without ever knowing what it was actually about. Best movie experience of my life, and ever since then, I don't watch trailers.
I did the same with avatar, then ended up watching it 3 times while it was still in the cinema. Definitely the best way to go into a movie

In my case, long story short, I went to watch it without wanting to watch it as I had seen 3 seconds of the trailer and they were jumping from one building to another (Morpheous during training) and I said "NO WAY I WILL EVEN WATCH THAT GARBAGE"... and needless to say: It blew my mind.

Had the same experience with The Matrix, didn't know what it was about, was pretty much blown away. I like the comment Tarantino makes about Speed, being what it was back then, going to a movie theater and watching it. I kind of have the same thing for movies like Days of Thunder and Jurassic Park. Thrilling to watch in a movie theater, but maybe not later on on a tv screen when you get older. Battle Royale is bonkers, it's unorthodox and god damn strange, watching it wanted me to see more asian movies. Think I will watch some of the movies he mentions.

Yeah the fact that people love the trilogy and now a fourth movie as a whole baffles me. I never even bothered with that animatrix crap. But I introduced my stepdaughter to matrix and she asked to watch the second one and I was just like... no we can watch the first one again if you want...

Memories of Murder still haunts me to this day. Left me with a profound hopelessness for humanity. I love Bong Joon Ho's brilliant mash-up of horror, slapstick, family melodrama, and bureaucratic incompetence. He effortlessly blends all genres in all his films.

Also really liked the role reversal of the composed metropolitan and the rural hot-heads towards the end.
Love how he starred Bruce Willis in his most popular movie ever - Pulp Fiction - yet recognizes Bruce's best performance was in someone else's movie. Loved Unbreakable.
Doubt unbreakable is his best performance....12 monkeys would probably be his best.

Die hard 1 was one of his best too.. that’s what put him on the map 100%. Arguably one of the best action movies ever made and I don’t think anyone could of played that role anywhere close to Bruce.

When I was a teenager I found a "Memories of Murder" dvd in the trash. First South Korean movie I watched. Since then I've watched dozens of them. Wonderful.

Dazed and confused is probably one of my favorite comfort movies ever!! I can watch that over and over and will never get sick of it.

The ending of Unbreakable is a masterpiece in cinematic history ❤
it was very subtle, simple breaking and rape case, as opposed to the world in trouble, but it brought it back to the importance of individuals who desperately need help
Tarantino has some of the most well-rounded views on movies. He watches Japanese, Korean, Chinese, American, British etc. movies and his lists always contain a mix of all kinds of genres. Horror, Action, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi etc.
'In Bruges" wasn't on his list. His opinions aren't well rounded, and he's now dead to me.
So great to know a great director like Quentin appreciates Friday.

My sister in law was the one that turned me on to Battle Royal and i thank her still to this day for bringing that absolute gem into my life
Seeing the matrix in theater was one of the most exhilarating movie experiences I’ve ever had
It took some years before I rented Matrix on VHS cause I thought it wasn't for me. Immediately after seeing it I played it once more. And the morning after. Since then I've watched it for...countless times...same with Fight Club, Kill Bill, Tootsie and Persona by Ingmar Bergman. Countless times.
Its hard to describe what it was like seeing the matrix for the first time in theater in context…people were losing their minds

"The same director who did The Host" is *the director of the first non-English film to win the best picture at the Oscars* (though awards don't mean much) QT saw and acknowledged the excellence of Bong Joon Ho long before Hollywood.
He was on a lot of people's radar since 'Barking Dogs Never Bite' and massively influencial outside of America for the past 20 years.

It was not that hard to recognize those movies. Parasite is not even the best korean movie IMO. Memories of Murder, The Wailing, The Handmaiden are above it, again, IMHO.

Sadly I was a bit too young to see it in theaters but I do adore that film to this day.

Tarantino is a director/writer who genuinely loves the art form. I'd love to hear him discuss what makes a film notable vs one of these favorites. Some of them he doesn't even discuss.

I think he just says something if he thinks there is something to say that hasn't been said a million times, take praise for the fight club. He mentions the movie and moves on, with the Matrix which judging by what he said he likes less than many of the others on the list, yet he commented on it quite extensively -compared to the others anyway.
He has a scattered mind and I'm sure could and would talk extensively about all of them if asked a question.

Scarlett's character is feeling all of the exact same things, except she is young and confused. Their bond isn't because they would ever be friends in the real world, it's out of desperation and a feeling of normalcy.
"It's a love story" is the farthest thing from the truth.

Awesome list! My top 20 from 1992 to 2009 would include atleast 6 Quentin Tarantino films (maybe not Deathproof or Grindhouse). The top 20 films from that time period unarguable include Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vol 1, Kill Bill Vol 2, Jackie Brown, and Inglourious Basterds. Greatest Director of all time!

Nothing affirms your own view of movies more than seeing one of your favorite directors calling out your favorite film - the Matrix - as one of the greatest and simultaneously calling out the sequels for ruining the whole franchise.

I would’ve expect Oldboy on the list, as Tarantino pushed it forward during the Cannes Filmfestival in 2004. (Same year as Memories of Murder)
to be fair, this is only 20, and think about how many movies come out in the US alone every year, let alone worldwide, and this is a 17-year span. He probably had thousands to pick from.

The Matrix was the first movie most people saw on DVD. It was right when people started getting DVD players more they had become a little less expensive and everyone would say, "You gotta watch the Matrix"

John Wick has very good coreograghy and it's a fun watch, but has probably 1% of the writing, story, characters, originality, visual brillance of The Matrix.

Love how Quentin acknowledges Bong Joon-ho like ten years before Parasite. I've just seen Memories Of Murder (directly after Barking Dogs Don't Bite), and I love the guy completely. I wasn't that impressed by Parasite though as I saw it in 2020, I think you must know Korean movies a little bit
update: Just saw The Host. Well, indeed a fine movie, but is a bit too unsettling, especially regarding the finale. And Parasite has a lot of direct parallels with it

Avec you ever seen The Chaser (2008)? , also another amazing serial killer movie nearly as good as "Memories of Murder".

Quentin seems to appreciate any film regardless of genre and that's what makes him great. Art is in many forms and the fact he put Friday, Police Story and Team America in with The Matrix and Unbreakable goes to show how diverse his pallet is. I respect his opinions on movies more than probably any director.
Also regardless of language it seems, which should be a give but still makes me so happy

I hope you make a series about directors talking about their favorite films. It's very interesting to see what their influences are. It's kinda like asking musicians what artists influenced their music.
I went to see “unbreakable” on its opening night and I recall feeling the same way. It really struck home for me and I considered it a masterpiece as well.
After Sixth Sense then Unbreakable we all thought M Night was the next Spielberg/Kubric. Then Signs and Village came out...
My only problem with his movies is that he always has a twist ending so even if you don’t know what it is you know its coming
I took a girl I was seeing to that film in 2000 and we were both totally enthralled with the film and not each other LOL. No regrets either.

My favorite movies of all time, not just from 1992 to 2009, are all Quentin Tarantino movies. I get lost in each and every one of them. Engaging, intense and more than a hint of humor. Dark af. Scratches my cinematic itch. Hard and satisfyingly.

Just realized this was one of the lists Bong Joon Ho was talking about in his Best Director Oscar speech. Quentin surely has good taste in international films, and most legendary directors do. Subtitles really partially removes the language obstacles of accessing some great masterpieces.
Subtitles are fine, dubbing destroys a movie.
@@sparqqling Depends on who is doing the dubbing. America's dubbing industry is awful, because we don't care. Spain's dubbing industry is incredible, they actually do a great job.

My country don't produce a lot of animations, and without dubbing, I would not have had the opportunity to enjoy movies while growing up. Even today, I sometimes watch a movie dubbed and it's actually pretty good, at least where I live.
@@homerosouza2353 Fully disagree, I'm coming from a country with a few million native speakers most things beyond a target audience of 8 years old are subtitled. Dubbing is horrible for anything that is not an animation.
@@sparqqling Do you think a child would be happier reaching subtitles or having the pleasure of watching something on their own language? I have seen some dubbing that was horrible to the point of ruining the movie, but most of it was really good and fun to watch. Talking for myself, I always watch on the original language, but if well made, dubbing can be good as well. Maybe your country just don't have a good dubbing industry, idk.

Battle Royale is one of my all time favourites, what an incredible journey that movie is, it also inspired the hunger games and the “Battle Royale” game genre like PUBG etc.

Disagree random. 30 percent of the list was based on ground breaking "items'. Team America, Friday, etc all ground breaking going where the curve had not been.
It's made me want to watch it, whereas the clip on Netflix that acts as the trailer had put me off.
Was not expecting him to list Friday but I think anyone who has seen it would agree it's a certified classic.
I agree with Battle Royale being at number 1. It was a great movie and was a very memorable experience watching it for the first time. Great movie.

The Host and Memories of Murder are so underrated, even tho its the same director for Parasite. Great introduction to foreign filmmaking!

Quentin is def right about Speed. After seeing the movie multiple times, its easy to just categorize it with the other straight forward action/thriller movies in your memory. But its definitely a great first watch movie
I hope Quentin makes a science fiction film one day. Idk if he’s even interested in that genre all that much but I just feel like it would be interesting to see what he could come up with cus we’ve never seen him do anything like that before
A Tarantino Sci Fi? That would be like Firefly wouldn't it? Like a space western.
Or you could do a supernatural earth based Sci fi film. Maybe like a Signs movie where it's mostly suspense mixed with guns but they aren't shooting the aliens, they're shooting each other. Probably based in slave times and it's some racist white vs black cuz the slaves got some cool alien technology and the white owners are jealous.

Who ever had not seen it. definitely watched after Split came out. I had to introduce that movie to several family members over the years. Its like nobody watched it when it came out. Really good movie though.
I watched Unbreakbable on a whim and thought what a wierd movie, never heard of it, crazy premise, Willis was amazing, why have I never heard of this?

I do remember sitting in the movie theatre as that bus drove down that rode, and it was a hell of a ride. Easily forgotten now, but at the time, man.
Same thing with The Matrix. I'd give a lot to go back in that point in time, seeing it in the cinema for the first time.
I never would have guessed that no Scorsese films made his Top 20 but one by Woody Allen did? And it's not even considered one of Allen's better films.

@@williamsawyer18 He said that the 2nd and 3rd Matrix ruined the mythology, and so that it made the first one less "magical". Speed 2 and 3 are just bad movies, they don't take anything of the first one ^^

God knows how many times I have seen this video. Hearing Quentin Tarantino’s voice talking about movies is a pleasure. He truly loves cinema. I can listen to him talk and analyze movies all day.
I have known the meme “Damn” from Friday 1995 for years but had not watched the movie until I did a month ago. And damn the movie is so good it deserves higher rating.
Quentin excites you about movies like nothing/nobody else can as if they're not exciting enough already! I just want to love my craft work the way Quentin loves films.

So cool to see Unbreakable on the list. It is my favorite movie and people always kind of kind of turn their heads when I say that, so it is validating to hear Quentin put it in his top 20 for the time period and call it a masterpiece.
That was back in 2009. Since then, one film came out which I think could be considered as best in terms of cinematic art for years to come, and this is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Very surprised he didn’t include Chungking Express in his Top 20. He loved that one so much that he bought the distribution rights.
I gotta say, out of Wong Kar Wai's movies "In the mood for love" was by far the best, "Fallen Angels" was also great. I don't get the fascination with Chungking Express though.
I actually loved that movie. I was shocked to see Quinten talking about the movie in detail after watching it. I liked that movie so much I started dating asian women Lol. Now im married to one for 10 Misérables years.

I remember seeing a review of Speed on a show called Movies, Movies, Movies, and the look of the film was just astonishing. Back when CGI wasn’t particularly prevalent in films, and story telling and production value really counted for something.
Speed Is definetly one of the best American action films of its decade. I'd put it in the same list as Face off. Die Hard remains the best ever to me.
Quite a few of his favourites are movies I greatly enjoyed.

@@sean2848 Depends on the order you experience the story. I watched the film first, so the novel and manga were so amazing afterwards because it fleshed out so much more of the story and characters. But I still appreciate the film for introducing me to the story in the first place.
If you read the novel or manga before watching the film, then I understand it would probably feel a bit underwhelming. It really should have been a trilogy or even a TV series so they didn't have to rush it so much.
A prequel film based on Shogo Kawada's first game would be especially awesome.
It's insane how every time Quentin gives his opinions on film I insanely agree with everything he says, just about 95% of the time.. he talked about how H20 is Jamie Lees best Halloween, and I totally agree.. that will always be my finale, I consider the David Gordon Greene trilogy fan fiction... How he talks about the Matrix being amazing, but 2, and 3 ruined it for him (didn't ruin it for me, I still love the original, and make up my own story for what happens after that masterpiece)... talks about how Unbreakable is one of the all time masterpieces of our time, and I couldn't agree more, one of my faves. Just dozens, and dozens of stuff he's said that I can't agree more with. Speed being one of the best adrenaline, edge of your seat films ever.. I could talk with this guy all day.
