  • Low carb shirataki noodles are one of the most contentious products on the market. Made from konjac flour, these noodles have a texture very similar to real pasta noodles. Today, we taste test three of the most popular brands, including the powerhouse lowcarb pasta called Miracle Noodles. Which brand won our taste test? Did we find any of the low carb shirataki noodles to be an acceptable substitute for actual pasta? Let's find out!

I have played with shirataki and I find the best method is to thoroughly rinse in hot water in a strainer, then microwave for two minutes. After that, the odd flavor almost vanishes and the texture is good for whatever. They work best in broth dishes like ramen, since they absorb the flavor and become delicious. I would like them even off a diet.

they don't really have a distinct taste. They are a soft bland vegetable that require a lot of technique in order to have a good flavor. The problem with unskilled cooks in 100% of cases is bland mushy results.

when you can't eat pasta anymore, and you have deprived yourself of wheat or egg noodles, these are just fine with any sauce or stirfry. These are phenomenal when prepared in an Asian style sauce or broth. They are less great when trying to cook them in an Italian preparation or in a cream sauce. I made amazing Pad Thai with these! One thing to save you time, they do not need to be boiled. All you have to do is rinse well, dry in a towel, cut them if they are super long and dry fry. Done! They may not look like much but 1/2 of one of those bags along with a protein and veg is incredibly filling. Word of caution, drink water before or after eating these. They are full of fiber so water is crucial and that's why they cause some people digestive issues. Also, they are a real choking hazard for people that have any sort of esophageal issue. Don't feed these to children! Great video. You're awesome!

I just tried these noodles, I made fettuccine noodles and my Keto version of a Alfredo sauce, I added Argentinian red shrimp that had been cooked with Cajun seasoning and lime juice in a skillet, and I love them! These Noodles save my life Cause I have to stay on this meal plan, I’m about to do a rice dish and a spaghetti dish next. I ordered them online from Amazon miracle noodles here is my preparation:
TIP: I let my noodles drip dry in the colander so less water wham I pan dry them - makes them done quicker and I like the taste.
TIP: I always season my pasta I don’t just add salt, I add chicken bouillon cube or if I don’t have that just garlic salt and salt maybe a little cumin and that’s it, onion salt if I have it, I add to taste and when I taste the water and if I like the taste, has kind of good flavor that’s what I boil my noodles in. Been doing that to my regular pasta noodles for years because it adds a little bit of flavor that’s yummy. I love the way these noodles turned out another tip when they get cold they get squishy and I prefer them firm So I recommend you eat them WARM or hot, another
TIP: they were a little bit too long for me, I don’t like to cut my noodle with my teeth, the noodle texture is great for me but I do not like to have to cut them with my front teeth it’s just a personal thing so I cut them (I just grab the bunch and make one cut with kitchen shears.) before I prepare them. DELICIOUSNESS

Thanks Wes, and everyone for their awesome tips and tricks to cooking these noodles. I made them last night, with a marinara and Italian chicken sausage sauce, topped with quattro formaggio cheese. (All ingredients were purchased at Trader Joe's). The turnout was fantastic! How I did it. I bought the Nasoya spaghetti noodles. Opened the package over my colander in cool running water. Rinsed well. Then transferred to a bowl with apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. I let it set for a few minutes. And thoroughly rinsed again. I patted out excess water with paper towels and dry fried. When they appeared fairly done, I added dry oregano and basil, garlic, salt, pepper and a little basil olive oil. And heated for a few mins. Done. I took out the noodles, topped with my marinara meat sauce, and served. The texture and turn out was better than I expected! Really good. I think I was only successful for the first time because of this video and the other input from viewers. Thanks Keto community!

I got a chuckle, when he smelled the noodle bag said they smell, then smelled the bag again and said they smelled, then smelled three or four more times, to let us know they really smelled..........lol. Japanese eat a tremendous amount of dried fish and seafood items. So the noodles having a fish smell probably doesn't bother the fish flavor of the dish. Also put some shrimp into the Alfredo sauce!

I just found these noodles recently and love them!!! I especially like that they are flavorless until you put sauce on them then they add so much to the dish because the taste of the noodle never distracts from the taste of the rest of the ingredients yet you still have the noodle that gives body to the dish. I am not Japanese, but really like this noodle alternative.

I was hesitant to try them but found your review and will definitely head to Publix so I can, once again, indulge in Pho Ga, my favorite go to soup! I think I will try a few tips that are given in the comments, especially adding the lemon. I don't know how I feel about the boil/not boil thing. If a mfg puts it on their package as a direction, it makes me nervous to deviate. Glad you did it by the book first. That's why I love your channel.

Hello, I really enjoy your videos.
I'm writing from Japan. Konjac noodles here are ALWAYS found in the refrigerated section. We usually rinse them, cut them if necessary, and then boil. This is the first I've heard of pan frying, but I'm interested to try it. We usually just simmer in a flavorful broth. It picks up the flavor very well. If you are doing a one pot meal, be careful to not let it touch meat if you cook them together, it will make the meat touch. I always layer a vegetable between the konjac and the meat.
Because it is so high in fiber and low in calories, it has been used for a long time here as a diet food. I sometimes add it to my smoothies, once chopped up in the blender it is unnoticeable.
    Keep up the good work

Anje.U9 WOW! Thank you so much for commenting! It's very interesting hearing from someone "in the know." I really appreciate you sharing with us.
Are they called konjac in Japan, or is there a different name? I'm curious about the pronunciation of the word. Wikipedia and the encyclopedia say it's "kon-YACK" but some people say it's pronounced "kon-JACK." Which is correct, or is it called something else entirely?

    • @MidoriNekoChan
      @MidoriNekoChan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

Oops! That should have been it will make the meat tough. Here it's pronounced konnyaku as Japanese always ends in a vowel except for n. Generally you can buy it here as noodles or in blocks. We have the white kind, or a gray/brown kind due to hijiki seaweed being added for higher mineral content.

I remember the very first time I prepared Shiratake noodles with my low carb version of TGIFriday's Cajun Chicken and Shrimp Alfredo Sauce. I was SO LOOKING FORWARD to this dish because it used to be my "go to" dish whenever my husband and I took the family to dinner. The product I used was the second variety of tofu-shiratake noodles you prepared in your video (can't recall the name right at the moment) I have no earthly idea what I did wrong because I am pretty sure I followed the directions implicitly, but the texture reminded me of what it would taste like to shred a common kitchen sponge and sauce it before eating. My poor husband ate it and commented that it was chewy but not that bad. I was MAD (NOT at him...) but because I felt it was a HUGE WASTE of sauce. Thankfully, someone turned me on to Miracle Noodles so I gave the angel hair pasta variety a try and was NOT disappointed. Now, let's be honest....these Shiratake noodles, in no way, replace traditional pasta, but they are NICE way to enjoy an Italian inspired sauce! They sort of remind me of cooked bean sprouts...something I can live with as a pasta replacement. My husband liked them and I LOVE THEM!

Here on the West Coast of Canada, we have a brand of Konjac noodles called "Luvina". It comes in a 400 gram (about 0.9 of a pound) package that contains 2 sealed pouches. It doesn't need refrigeration. I'm really glad that this is what was available to us, because this brand doesn't have any of the smell or taste issues of these ones you tested. When you open them to drain, they have a very slight odour, but nothing like you're describing.
I rinse them for maybe 30 seconds, (no salt) and then boil them like pasta for 5-7 minutes. They have a bit more of a springy texture than wheat pasta, but other than that, they are basically "pasta like".
My Asian Wife absolutely loves them, and no longer cares that she can't eat white rice any more, so that should tell you something.
Take note that, although the serving size is small, it is extremely FILLING! I eat a little less than my share of the pouch (100 grams), otherwise I get bloating from the high fibre content, and I am absolutely stuffed! My wife doesn't experience the bloating, even though she's 98 lbs to my 170 so (obviously), it affects some people this way and not others.
Anyway, if you're able to get a hold of this brand, give it a try. It comes in different shapes.like rice and penne, and we've tried them all, but find that the spaghetti is the best for texture. I even use it with my homemade curry instead of rice, and it's excellent.

If you rinse them for 10 min in cold water, and then microwave them (or boil) in water for 5 min, maybe mix in garlic powder, if you like. I used the pasta zero in making homemade keto pad thai and I can't stress the importance of boiling with salted water and pan frying ON HIGH heat for longer than recommended because my first batch came out with the consistency of earthworms. After trying again with this in mind it came out better and adding more chopped peanut to the pad thai helps hide more of the offness of texture. The egg, chicken or tofu, and sauce make it really delectable.

I only use Shirataki noodles to replace rice "glass noodles" with Asian food (I'm stuck using what they have at the local Chinese grocery). I find they replicate that texture well. When I want Italian pasta I just do eggplant cut into noodles, stir fried with salt, olive oil and a pinch of garlic powder and rosemary. It tastes... like eggplant, but eggplant goes well with most pasta recipes. But I'm so glad you did this video; I had no idea about the dry roasting!

Suggestion is not to ever boil it as it sort of dissolves (I kinda like it semi-dissolved too).

I just tried the Tofu shirataki noodles tonight. My package didn't mention the dry pan portion though. I threw them in an alfredo with tuna and peas and other than a really odd texture, they weren't terrible. They at least gave me the pasta feel. I'm glad to see you thought their texture was off too lol
