      but yeah I remember watching your first video and ones after that when they came out and my points in life and my japanese at that time. Unfortunately life stuff caused me to put my japanese aside until recently but your videos have always motivated me and while I'm just an internet stranger I can't help but feel proud of this kid online that grew up and really put in that effort

    Hey man, I'm 15 years older then you and I started Japanese 2 years ago. I've watched all your updates and the part that resonated with me as it should with everyone is to be proud of where you are compared to where you've been. It's so huge. Also I am starting to feel what you mean about just starting to do things in Japanese and it not feel like a grind/study. At this stage while I can't watch an adult show without subtitles, I can certainly follow it (this varies quite a bit of course) and its just great to get to this stage. Similarly while reading Manga or books, its now becoming less and less about learning and more about engagement.
    I will say the biggest thing that has helped is getting grammar out of the way as you say, though my approach was definitely to study grammar every day (or try to, no one is perfect) and then immerse. I feel like knowing grammar has really helped get past the slog of what is a word and what is just...grammar. Both in reading and listening.
    Anyway, loved the updates. I'll never live in Japan myself, though I plan to visit for vacation in the 3 years (my 5 year mark) mainly because I want to wait for my daughter to be at an age where she can appreciate the trip. :)
    I hope you make video updates of your journeys in Japan. Even small ones, it would be great to see!

    • @HypotheticalTiger
      @HypotheticalTiger  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, from what I've read online it's always super competitive and it's basically just up to luck whether you get selected for an interview or not. I don't think they really care too much about language ability either. But I wouldn't be surprised if they want people who are less-skilled in Japanese because then it's easier to keep them in the JET system longer 😂

    As always you make very good update videos Tiger. Literary stole like half of the things I was going to say when I would upload one, but I mean it is even playing field out here. I really enjoyed how you got a bit emotional at the end because you really did work your way up with Japanese and I get that too. Overall, really good man you were definitely an inspiration for me to start learning and also upload my own videos, so thank you for that. I will be waiting for your next upload and I hope you enjoy you 3 month internship in Japan man. Have fun

I have been playing this kanji game and doing using tengo deck for now starting at n4 going to make my way to n1. I think I will add reading manga back to the list next month. Still watching anime here an there but I am looking to move towards Japanese YTbers. Have any recommendations? I would enjoy seeing videos about your time in Japan and what you have moving forward!!

  • @PatChatGC
    @PatChatGC ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Fully agree with the monolingual transition. I did it back in the day, and all it did is make me end up not looking up words during immersion because I just couldnt be bothered. And that slowed me down dramatically since, well, I’d run across tons of words that I didn’t know, and just… skip them.
    Now I look up in english, and I’m looking up words so much more. And when making anki cards, on yomichan I have both the english definition and a few japanese ones, so I can pick whatever makes me understand better.
    Also agreed with the whole point on nuance. Yeah the JP dictionary tells you more about the nuance, but you’re gonna get that through immersion anyways when you’ve immerse a lot.
    When learning english I always looked up translations of the words in french, it’s only when I was fluent that I naturally ended up looking up actual english definitions of words. And my english understanding turned out totally fine in the long run!

    • @HypotheticalTiger
      @HypotheticalTiger  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      🙏when I originally started trying the monolingual transition I did the same thing and just stopped looking things up because it would be a shitty process and would just be no fun at the time

  • @pathologicpicnic
    @pathologicpicnic ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree so much about pre-made decks and the monolingual transition. I have sentenced mined and used a monolingual dictionary before, a lot. But neither are necessary. Repping in Anki becomes so convoluted when you’re trying to recall Japanese definitions (especially with vocab cards) and look ups while immersing take so long. It’s not worth it imo. Also, you can learn words with pre-made decks. I’ve made 1000s of my own cards but you don’t need to. Do 6k-10k pre-made then stop new cards and quit Anki after the reviews drop really low.

    • @HypotheticalTiger
      @HypotheticalTiger  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely agree with you! People put too much value on the monolingual transition and anki in general, should be a quick "get the meaning and go" type of thing imo

  • @cowie7308
    @cowie7308 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Using an English dictionary while your immersing to just get a general idea of the meaning of a word really quick is fine, but I think monolingual definitions are worth it for your anki cards so you don't reinforce the english ones over and over again while reviewing your cards.

    • @HypotheticalTiger
      @HypotheticalTiger  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can agree with that maybe, but if you're learning those words and really reinforcing the meaning basically from Anki, that's a bad thing imo. Whether my cards are in Japanese or English, I would always be learning the true meaning and usage of the words from immersing and seeing it in various contexts. If you spend a lot of time on Anki, Japanese is probably better to have as the definition language but that's completely opposite of how I want to learn Japanese and how I have been doing it. Anki is amazing but I think a majority of people overvalue it in a way that causes them to spend a lot more time on Anki than they should.
      But obviously it's all up to how that person wants to learn! Just from my experience going fully monolingual doesn't seem to be a necessity and can probably slow down a lot of people if they focus on it too much and make it something they HAVE to do at a certain point.

  • @chaseleck
    @chaseleck 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    How many hours a day on average do you immerse/ study?

    • @HypotheticalTiger
      @HypotheticalTiger  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's really hard to say just because there were days where I would play a game for 17 hours straight lmao and then there were days where I didn't really do anything besides maybe seeing some Japanese on twitter. If I had to give a number I'd say it averages out to at least 3 hours a day.
      It's fine to take days off and to not do so much but I think 2 hours a day is a good goal to shoot for and should be enough to get good over an okay length of time. But by no means should it be something like "if I don't get my 2 hours of Japanese today then I fucked up."
      Even now I do a lot of things in English but there's things I only do in Japanese. I still talk to my friends in English and watch English movies and TH-cam. But if I watch any anime, read manga, or play video games, it's always in Japanese. And then of course I talk to Japanese friends, watch Japanese movies and TH-cam here and there. I feel like my life has a pretty nice balance of English and Japanese stuff which makes me pretty happy!
      Hope this is a good answer lmao

  • @abandonment
    @abandonment ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think i started immersing a bit after when you made your 6 month video, and back then, seeing that video was definitely a big inspiration to me, and likely helped to solidify my motivation for starting to immerse initially. I really relate to what you said in this video though, about how taking a big challenge like this in learning Japanese helped make you feel more capable of being able to do anything else challenging if you had the interest in it. Japanese has been the first big thing for me (outside of more structured things like school/etc) that i've really committed myself to pursuing. I've never gone at something challenging like this on my own and really stuck with it this far. It really does make me feel confident about doing anything else in the future.
    Also, I've personally been slacking a bit recently, and i started getting down on myself about it until i remembered you talking about there being spans of time in your journey where you weren't as productive with immersing (maybe this was in your 2 year video?) and it made me feel better about this just being something I need right now, and that it doesn't mean I can't still achieve my goals with the language eventually.
    for that and more, and everything, thanks so much! I'm excited for you and hope your time living in Japan goes great!! and even if they're sparse from here on, I'll always look forward to a video of yours.
    take care

    • @HypotheticalTiger
      @HypotheticalTiger  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm super glad that my videos have been able to help you out and provide some guidance on how to deal with the whole journey. Absolutely take time off, as long as you come back and continue you'll still get to where you want to be eventually. Right now I'm in a period where immersions super easy because it's literally all I want to do, so when moments like this happen I think it's best to take hold and really just do as much as you want and can do. Best thing is to try and touch a little Japanese every day in some way, even on days where I didn't want to hear or read any Japanese, I would always see a little on TH-cam titles or in tweets so no matter what I always got some input which I think helped a lot.
      Thank you so much!! :D

    Hey congratulations on your internship!! Just a quick question, what's your take on pitch accent?

    • @HypotheticalTiger
      @HypotheticalTiger  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that it's something that's pretty important if you want to sound as close to a Japanese person as you can. I haven't really spent much time on it because I'm lazy as fuck and that's really the only reason lol. I've been able to have plenty of conversations and people understand me fine, it's very rare that I'm misunderstood because of pronunciation if people don't understand what I say. Plus, I've gotten compliments on my pronunciation from time to time so I guess it's not terrible even though I'm sure it's far from perfect. I think it's probably good thing to put a decent amount of time into if you really care about sounding as good as you can, I wish that I could force myself to put some time into it but I'm just focusing on a lot of other things instead. I have some of Dogen's videos saved somewhere that are apparently pretty good to watch even if you don't do a deep dive into pitch accent, hope I can just sit down and watch those sometime just to get a little better with it and understand it more.
      Long answer which pretty much means, I'm dumb and shouldn't be lazy because it's probably something that's good to put time into but if you don't you can still be okay if that's something that you're okay with lmao

      I have no problem with my ratio of reading to listening. I don't have exact hours for anything at this point but I've gotten hundreds of hours of listening within the last year. I still definitely have more reading experience altogether but I'm getting a good amount of listening in as well, and that will only go up once I'm in Japan and interacting with people every day.
