#24 EXACTLY!! In psychology this is called "premature satisfaction." Talking about your plans releases dopamine, giving you a small reward before doing anything. As a result, your motivation to act can decrease because your brain already feels accomplished. This is why I never liked the idea of new years resolutions. To add onto this, there's also the chance that someone reacts negatively to your intention, maybe they say that's stupid why would you learn X language when Y language is more useful?? ...etc. this will kill your motivation.
I think it depends on the kind of goal because this is true but talking about it can also make you accountable. I guess it also depends what kind of person you are.
I get this and like the example of creatives emerging from a period of silence. What about accountabilty? Telling other people makes them ask you, how it is going with x language.
The people saying "accountability" are talking about an entirely different thing. I am NOT saying that you should never tell anyone about something you're TRYING to start. But you all know full well that there is a difference between saying "Hey, I need you to check if I've done any Polish in 3 weeks" and saying "I'M GONNA LEARN POLISH I SERIOUSLY AM NO SERIOUSLY..."

I used to be much more strict with myself to use specific types of input that may be more useful on paper, but I never really could bring myself to do it for too long. As soon as I started using things like anime, manga and video games in the language, my progress started accelerating! I can’t understate how beneficial personal enjoyment and engagement is!
There's a video by One Word at a Time about how Harry Potter is not full of useless vocabulary, because if you take all the words related to the Potterverse, magic in general (even counting broom, midnight and owl as magic-related words) and school, is still less than 3%. So unless you're already advanced, any kind of content helps with any other kind of content.
First time in a while I didn't skip a sponsor segement 😂😂 On a side note, after watching your other video I decided to properly attempt watching Spiderverse 50 times (it's also a movie I love) - almost at 30 times right now! Repeat exposure is absolutely a game changer. After about 15 watches I was starting to feel a bit worn out, but the lack of novelty was soon replaced with the satisfaction of being able to quote the movie line by line. Definitely has given me lots of little phrases that just roll off my tongue without having to think about it at all. I think I'm gonna do this with more movies, particularly the ones I enjoy watching regardless! Keep up the great content 😁😁
I came to TH-cam today to watch something in Malay, but I saw that there was this fascinating video and thought to myself, "Ooh, I'd better not make any of these mistakes, I'll find out what they are first." Very interesting stuff. Anyway, now it's time for bed.
Swedish was the first foriegn language i tried to learn, i did everything wrong and hated studying it so i rarely did. After 2 years of "studying" this language, i am not nearly as far as i should be. I honestly think I am still A2 😒. And i'm so embarrassed by this. I wanted to see how much of a language I could learn if i did it the "right way". Studying everyday, both actively and passively. This idea came to mind when I was bored one saturday night and scrolling through Mango Languages, I saw Polish and thought: I should study swedish... then proceeded to click on Polish. Now that i know the right way i'm actually having fun with Polish. I found tv shows to watch in Polish that are interesting and the Mango course isnt that bad. I think I needed a break from Swedish to prove to myself that hey, U CAN learn another language. We'll see if I continue with Polish after these 60 days, it's for fun right now. 🤷🏼♀️
@@adventureswithmadison Yeah I've never been very motivated to learn Spanish, but somehow adding languages that I WANT to learn gets me on a roll and makes me more motivated for Spanish.
I mean, good content in the language you're learning is great, but I'd just try to find like ONE book you want to read or movie you like or something and listen to the English once and then the Indonesian over and over.

Great video!!! I love the 'has learned a second language as an adult' thing. Way too many people who learnt as a child and then who attribute their high school grammar lessons that they obviously blitzed because they were already fluent to their fluency. Excellent advice for programmers is to make sure to download all the dictionaries and upload them into your local database. The best way programmers learn a language is to spend all their time writing a bunch of SQL queries to find interesting connections in the target language.
Gosh I used to do the first with basically everything. It was miserable. Then I learned about growth mindset and now find things I'm _interested_ in instead of "talented" in. Best thing I've ever done. :)
I am following the advice of "don't learn a language because people tell you to". I stopped learning Spanish for a bit and started to learn Russian because I ended up liking the media I saw and it's fun to learn. I also tell myself Russian is easy.
You’ve given great tips that have helped me discover new apps and concepts I hadn’t known before. That being said I’m totally stealing this concept of tips to stay bad for my channel lmao.
Studying multiple languages keeps me motivated. I do focus on one language for 3 months, so I get to do all 4 of my languages each year. On Wednesdays and Sundays I do 15 minutes of Duolingo in each of the languages, just so they don't get too stale. But my focus learning and comprehensible input stays 100% with the quarterly target language. Yeah I'm fluent in nothing after 4 years, but I've had nice little interactions in French, Japanese, & Norwegian while traveling... some being helpful in sticky situations. It would be great to be fluent, but I'm in no rush. The variety really lights up my ADHD brain!
It's awesome to travel and overhear languages you can understand, even if it's just a word:) Question: you do ONLY the focus language for the 3 months, except duolingo? I think that may be the issue. In my experience to have significant improvement up until fuency, the languages need to become a spontaneous part of your life. I can't imagine not consuming any content in my languages for 3 months (I have my fav youtubers, podcasts, books etc.)... but having a focus on one sounds helpful

I started off doing every language every day on Duolingo, but when it came to outside resources, I felt confused as to what to do. Too chaotic. When I assigned each quarter to a language, it really helped to feel calmer and not worry about what I was missing out on. From a neuroplasticity perspective, too, I feel that listening to one language helps train the brain better.

Will probably do Japanese after that since I'm on the Terrace House season that's set in the winter. But sometimes I change plans due to travel plans, too.
@@joob40 Interesting! definitely listening to one language and doing a full immersion helps a lot. I know when I get addicted to a tv show and binge watch, aferwards I have the language very active in my brain and helps with speaking too (I watched so many series in Portuguese and my comprehension is very high now). I think what I was trying to say, is that I wouldn't do 100% focus but maybe 70% and still keep the other languages active so I progress a bit on them as well. My goal is anyway to make them part of my life so I'm trying to build long-term habits. But I totally understand the tendency to hyperfocus on one thing only and forget the rest exists, I have ADHD as well :D switching every 3 months keeps things interesting for sure
The bigger scammer on language learning now telling people immersion won't work is Oriental Pearl. And she'll delete the comments of everyone exposing her. As someone who can speak Japanese I can spot her. And she even reported my user account for telling the truth. For someone who started learning Japanese when fluent in Chinese, living in China (I can't evaluate her Chinese yet; I will) have been learning Japanese for 12 years (all according to her) and lived in Japan for 9 years and currently live with a Japanese dude her Japanese is EXTREMELY poor. The problem s that when you don't know a language yet you can be exposed to 10 different speakers of the language at 10 very different levels and probably all of them, or most of them, will look as proficient as any other. When I stated learning Japanese around 2016 I though she was impressive. But I started without knowing Chinese characters, and any words in Japanese, from Brazil, never even had the opportunity to visit Japan, and now my Japanese is WAY ahead her Japanese. And I still have a LONG way to go in Japanese. My Japanese is nowhere near my English, my strongest language, for instance! Anyone starting Japanese form English, from their homes in the West is DOMMED to fail following her "advices".
I have to learn Spanish because it’s my husband’s first language and all his family still live in Mexico and we plan on retiring there someday. Plus I live in California. I NEED to learn Spanish. And I DO really want to learn it. Just knowing the amount I do now is so fun to use and my husband seeing my improvement and it making him happy and excited is even more motivation. However I’ve always wanted to speak and know Arabic and was toying with the idea of learning that as well but as it is so drastically different from both Spanish and English, your video makes me think it’s a sign that I should not lol. As someone on the spectrum sometimes I’m not sure how to unwrap sarcasm. I know I’m taking things literally but not really sure where to go from there. Another tip is to get EXTREME into just immersion. Don't even know how to say "hello" in the target language? Pick a complicated show in that language and just listen to it on repeat for decades. _Don't_ try to pick out the words or sentences and make flashcards of them, nor should you learn the grammar in the sentences being said and how the same word might change in certain situations. There are only two golden rules: studying's for nerds, and a diversity of study methods depending on your level and what exactly you're trying to learn is for sweats!
Yeah I saw that too... There's two of them actually. One of them possibly knows something about language learning but didn't actually watch my video and literally didn't believe that I'd even done it... like (HAVE YOU MET ME!?) haha, and the other one has the most loser energy I've ever come across... like I'm morbidly curious about how someone goes through their life with the attitude that everything is the worst thing ever.
It would really interesting to hear your advice what nonnative English speakers can improve. The situation we are in is: we listen to English constantly (tv, music, TH-cam etc), but most of us rarely speak English. We can “decode” English without effort, but producing sentences with the right word choices can be a struggle. And also the accent, I am from Sweden, so what English accent should I use? 😅 it becomes a mix of British and American English.

And just when I was starting to wonder if I should be watching that Ukrainian morning TV show when all I can understand is the weather report. My brother has turned into a baseball fanatic. He is in New York and a big fan of the Mets. I am not fluent enough in baseball to have a meaningful conversation with him about the game. Maybe you could do a short series of baseball explainers?
Doulingo is not going to make a person fluent in a language. It's an okay tool. But you're never going to get to the level of a native speaker with just duolingo.
I think that's such an understatement as to be an unhelpful statement. "I'm not a VERY tall man" is an understatement (I'm 182cm). But saying "Well, I'm very tall but I'm not sure if I'm QUITE among the tallest people in the world" would be to deceive people about how tall I was. That would give the impression of 7 ft something (213cm or more). Duolingo won't just not make a person fluent... it won't be a particularly good use of the person's time after about... a week.

Flashcards, tests, vocabulary, word association etc that apps can provide are potentially useful. But definitely a complete waste of time on their own. Nobody is ever going to be able to learn a new language with just duolingo or any other app.

The bigger scammer on language learning now telling people immersion won't work is Oriental Pearl. And she'll delete the comments of everyone exposing her. As someone who can speak Japanese I can spot her. And she even reported my user account for telling the truth.
For someone who started learning Japanese when fluent in Chinese, living in China (I can't evaluate her Chinese yet; I will) have been learning Japanese for 12 years (all according to her) and lived in Japan for 9 years and currently live with a Japanese dude her Japanese is EXTREMELY poor.
The problem s that when you don't know a language yet you can be exposed to 10 different speakers of the language at 10 very different levels and probably all of them, or most of them, will look as proficient as any other.
When I stated learning Japanese around 2016 I though she was impressive. But I started without knowing Chinese characters, and any words in Japanese, from Brazil, never even had the opportunity to visit Japan, and now my Japanese is WAY ahead her Japanese.
And I still have a LONG way to go in Japanese. My Japanese is nowhere near my English, my strongest language, for instance!
Anyone starting Japanese form English, from their homes in the West is DOMMED to fail following her "advices".
This is a great list that could be slightly adjusted to apply to anything you want to accomplish in life.

I have to learn Spanish because it’s my husband’s first language and all his family still live in Mexico and we plan on retiring there someday. Plus I live in California. I NEED to learn Spanish. And I DO really want to learn it. Just knowing the amount I do now is so fun to use and my husband seeing my improvement and it making him happy and excited is even more motivation. However I’ve always wanted to speak and know Arabic and was toying with the idea of learning that as well but as it is so drastically different from both Spanish and English, your video makes me think it’s a sign that I should not lol. As someone on the spectrum sometimes I’m not sure how to unwrap sarcasm. I know I’m taking things literally but not really sure where to go from there. Also I hope you get a percent of the Shark VPN because that seems like a win win for me getting it.

There's a lot of people out there who can't even learn their one native language.
Another tip is to get EXTREME into just immersion.
Don't even know how to say "hello" in the target language? Pick a complicated show in that language and just listen to it on repeat for decades. _Don't_ try to pick out the words or sentences and make flashcards of them, nor should you learn the grammar in the sentences being said and how the same word might change in certain situations. There are only two golden rules: studying's for nerds, and a diversity of study methods depending on your level and what exactly you're trying to learn is for sweats!
Almost no one actually does that though. Much more common advice is more on the other end of that scale.
Best line "do the stuff then tell people you have done it".

It would really interesting to hear your advice what nonnative English speakers can improve.
The situation we are in is: we listen to English constantly (tv, music, TH-cam etc), but most of us rarely speak English.
We can “decode” English without effort, but producing sentences with the right word choices can be a struggle. And also the accent, I am from Sweden, so what English accent should I use? 😅 it becomes a mix of British and American English.
OK, I just watched the first episode of Bluey. The parents are THE BEST. And this will definitely help with my french listening comprehension.

Thank you for another delightful video Mr Mont. Just a little bit of advice for you and your audience if you don't mind. I find the best way to avoid breaking promises is to avoid human contact as often as possible and never make promises in the first place. So far it is working very well and my life is so great, I even have enough time now days to leave bad comments on youtube videos. Sure I don't have a rewarding career or any relationships worth holding onto, but who needs that when you have mental instability.

Duolingo is Great
If you like it, great. But if you do little else, it won't matter how long you do it for, it still won't work.
Doulingo is not going to make a person fluent in a language. It's an okay tool. But you're never going to get to the level of a native speaker with just duolingo.
I think that's such an understatement as to be an unhelpful statement.
"I'm not a VERY tall man" is an understatement (I'm 182cm).
But saying "Well, I'm very tall but I'm not sure if I'm QUITE among the tallest people in the world" would be to deceive people about how tall I was. That would give the impression of 7 ft something (213cm or more).
Duolingo won't just not make a person fluent... it won't be a particularly good use of the person's time after about... a week.
@@daysandwords lol I do agree with your sentiment. I just think it can serve as a tool along the journey. Flashcards, tests, vocabulary, word association etc that apps can provide are potentially useful.
But definitely a complete waste of time on their own. Nobody is ever going to be able to learn a new language with just duolingo or any other app.
