After months of thinking about it and researching methods, I have finally decided to start learning Japanese! It's really nice getting to hear about your experience with the refold method. I strongly feel this is the best way to learn a language and I am looking forward to seeing how far I can get within a year !!
Ah wow I remember watching your six month update (few months after you posted it i think) and it really inspired/motivated me to be more serious about my immersion, which i had been very off and on about doing. and I think seeing your progress helped to cement that mentality of trusting in the process and ~just immersing~ which i think has been really crucial in these earlier stages for me in developing good/consistent immersion habits and all that jazz. Anyway after seeing your six month video I told myself I should look out for the 1 year one in june and then it totally slipped my mind until today when i was just trying to find your channel again (cus i forgot to sub, sry!) to remember something you had said in the 6 month video, and realized you had just posted this one a few days ago! this might be a weird comment 😭but I really love the way you speak Japanese, it just sounds comforting and natural in some way to me? Idk! But keep working hard and good luck you'll get where you want! I just realized it! You're Japanese is very expressive and I love that. That is why it sounds more natural in a sense to me. 16:48 this is where i am at right now. I've been going for almost 1 month and it almost seems like bullshit. It is very hard to believe that immersion will take me this far but it has to if everyone says its this good.
Yeah, one of the hardest parts for me was keeping faith and moving forward. It really does feel like it won't happen until one day it just clicks and you realize that it does just work the more you immerse and look up new things up. I hope you can keep going! As long as you're consistently immersing, looking new words and grammar up, and just enjoying what you're doing, then you'll be getting better and better without even noticing it. You can do it!
I felt the same 2? 3? years ago, reading was so freaking hard I couldn't understand much, but after maybe a few months (6 months or so) you'll mentally understand you've improved. Just continue, results are not immediate in language learning.

I’m actually really happy you brought up that point of not prioritizing numbers because recently I’ve come to realize that as well. I feel that because immersion isn’t linear people always try to find ways to measure their ability with these stats (which I don’t entirely blame them for because it’s natural to want to know if you’re improving in something after spending x amount of hours). Things like known words, watch time, and read volumes all serve as a base, but the real indication of progress comes from the engagement with those materials rather than the quantity. Great update video, and as always, I’ll be looking forward to the next one!
As always, thanks for the support Dan! Yeah, the obsession with numbers is something that I really want to work on from here onwards. It's good to want to see those numbers go up, but it shouldn't be the sole representation of level/progress made. As you said, the only real thing that matters is engagement and interaction with the language rather than how many hours/books/etc. you're able to log into a spreadsheet.
I watched your update videos when I was just starting and now that I am 3 months in I can relate to a lot of what you've said. I'm really glad that my videos have had that impact on you and helped you get motivation to go hard with Japanese. These are always my favorite types of comments to see, it means a lot. I've never really thought about freeflow vs intensive immersion honestly. I kinda just look up stuff when I want to and go off of that. With shows/youtube, it's very rare I look up a word unless I hear it so much it bothers me I don't know what it means lol. With reading, it depends on the content level, how much I care about getting a full understanding, and just how I feel that day. Some days I'll look up every word because my brain can handle it, but others I only look up ones that are crucial to get a better understanding of what's happening. Sorry if that's not the best answer lmao, I kinda just go with however I'm feeling that day.

I'm happy you have a friend to talk to! I have a friend in Japan too, she's actually half the motivation I have in learning... Which incidentally means I'm outputting far out of order, but getting some good social immersion! Thanks so much for these videos, they're very encouraging and affirming! The only question I would have is: have you noticed any changes in your personality when communicating in japanese?
It sounds weird telling people to "just believe" but it truly works! Once you start seeing more and more things click later in the journey, it'll become crystal clear that immersion really does clear up and worries/misconceptions. I'm glad that my videos are able to help you out! Helping out others and giving them motivation is something I'm really happy I'm able to do. I'm way more vulgar in English than Japanese lmao but that might also just be because Japanese "swear words" don't have the same feeling as English ones so I don't tend to use them as often as if they were as strong as English words. Also, since my spoken Japanese isn't too great, I definitely am more reserved and timid because it takes me longer to form sentences/get my point across. Those are the immediate changes I can notice. I'm sure if there were Japanese people who also know my English way of speaking, they would be able to see more changes. Hope that makes sense!

Hi, did you use refold since the start? Like, did you learned Kanji with the refold method? Or did you use RTK? I ask because I really want to start inmersion, to be honest I have done it before, I am a spanish speaker and I learned english by inmersion, I didn't do any formal study and just watched and read things in english until I "magically" understood them (at the start I was really slow but eventually I reached the point in which I can understand everything without any trouble at all). When I heard that that was a legitimate method to learn a lenguage I hoped to do it for japanese, but I can't really start If I can't read, so I am doing RTK, but I saw that refold has a different method and I don't know if it would be better to switch to refold or keep doing RTK (im not too far advanced on it).
I began to learn kanji back in 2018 when I originally started Japanese, I used WaniKani mainly. If you're doing recognition RTK where you don't have to write them or anything, then I'd suggest doing that until you feel like you have a grip on what kanji look like, from there you can just start learning words. I don't really know anyone who's used the new Refold deck to learn kanji so I can't really say if it's good or not. If you're enjoying RTK and are slowly getting better at recognizing kanji then I'd say stick with that, no need to change if it's working out. Main goal is to make kanji look like actual character so then it's easier to learn words since you won't be learning something that looks like random lines. I hope that helped!
Studied a good amount of grammar for a year before I found AJATT. Been at this for a few weeks now and I'm just trying to finish RTK1. Things are actually going pretty good with that so far and I am able to actively listen to Japanese all day at work and also when I get home. Any advice for after I finish RTK1 or during..
Once you're done with RTK I'd say just go through the Tango N5 deck, then you can kinda just immerse while you're going through the deck. Once the decks done you can either go to the N4 deck or just sentence mine as much as you want to get new words. Hopefully that helps a bit!
I'd say there's a large amount of reasons why my card making has slowed down. A couple I can quickly think of are: - Reading more novels/light novels which I don't make cards from (or very rarely make cards) - Being behind on my already made cards so I don't want to keep adding on if I'm not consistently learning new ones - Most manga I want to read is slice of life/romance, so there isn't a crazy amount of new words. There are still new words but nothing I really have the want to make a card from (I still look up words, just maybe not make cards for them unless they stand out) - I've stopped thinking of Anki has a huge necessity and have become more relaxed with using it Even though my card making has slowed down, I still learn a lot of new words and can see the progress there. The biggest reason for that is just reading more, it's really crazy how much you can learn just from reading a lot. Hopefully this is a semi-helpful answer!

You said that a lot of your focus is on manga, as you are at a year now, are you reading manga without furigana or do you not mind either way? If you are reading some without furigana, has this helped with memorising kanji better? (I'm only reading manga with furigana but often catch myself reading the furigana and ignoring the kanji). Keep up the good work!
I read manga both with furigana and without, it doesn't really impact my decision at this point. For me, I found I was able to read more kanji easier because I had the furigana there and just saw it a bunch until it was implanted in my memory. I think you can use furigana to your advantage as long as you try and focus on both the reading and kanji, as well as reading text without furigana every now and then so you can recall what the reading actually is without the crutch. Either way, I wouldn't worry about it a crazy amount unless you notice you're not paying attention to the kanji whatsoever and only looking at the furigana.

It was the first full series I read in Japanese around a month into immersing and a lot of the words I learned from it still pop up today and I always remember I learned it from there! It has some romantic elements but I'd say it's more of a human/psychological drama, if that interests you, you should definitely read it! I don't own it physically yet but it's definitely on my list of stuff I need to own!

Thanks Jordan! Raw text is definitely a way bigger hurdle than I originally thought lmao. Yep, just going with the flow, it definitely seems like the best way forward! I used HelloTalk in order to find some people to talk to, it was a good way to post Japanese/interact with natives pretty easily!
I don't really use too many tools honestly, besides Yomichan. Aside from that is just normal things like the Migaku Dictionary Anki add-on. I think Yomichan is a must get if you want to read stuff in browser and have easy access to dictionaries. The biggest thing I wish I did differently was just reading more, maybe also moving away from manga a little earlier than I did and focus more on raw text stuff. Also, trying to fit in immersion more during downtime. For example, if I was sitting at my computer just doing nothing, I should've at least put on a TH-cam video or something just so I had Japanese playing. Right now, I can't think of a crazy amount of stuff I would want to do differently, besides those and just immersing more in general.
I don't make too many cards for grammar related things, I just find an explanation so I can understand what the structure means and then just immerse until I get it Most of the time I look up a quick explanation of the grammar, read it, and then move on. But if I want to make a card for the piece of grammar I just make it the same as a sentence card. Sentence + image + target grammar/word on the front and then an explanation of the grammar point on the back of the card.
I've watched some of Dogen's series and plan to finish it. I also pay attention to pitch numbers in dictionaries while I'm reading + listen to native audio for words I look up through Yomichan or Forvo depending on how I'm reading. Other than that, not too much pitch accent stuff. My accent is far from perfect and my Japanese friend helps me with certain words or things, sometimes without me even asking. Overall, still have a long way to go when it comes to pitch accent lmao

I used HelloTalk in order to find some people to talk to, it was a good way to post Japanese/interact with natives pretty easily!

I don't really use too many tools honestly, besides Yomichan. Aside from that is just normal things like the Migaku Dictionary Anki add-on. I think Yomichan is a must get if you want to read stuff in browser and have easy access to dictionaries.
The biggest thing I wish I did differently was just reading more, maybe also moving away from manga a little earlier than I did and focus more on raw text stuff. Also, trying to fit in immersion more during downtime. For example, if I was sitting at my computer just doing nothing, I should've at least put on a TH-cam video or something just so I had Japanese playing. Right now, I can't think of a crazy amount of stuff I would want to do differently, besides those and just immersing more in general.
Can you plis make a video where you explain how to do anki card on grammar?or recommend someone who has already done it where you learned from
I don't make too many cards for grammar related things, I just find an explanation so I can understand what the structure means and then just immerse until I get it
Most of the time I look up a quick explanation of the grammar, read it, and then move on. But if I want to make a card for the piece of grammar I just make it the same as a sentence card. Sentence + image + target grammar/word on the front and then an explanation of the grammar point on the back of the card.
How do you stick with your studies every day? It is very hard for me to do Japanese studies every day and stick with it.
I think I’m sold to restart Refold/MIA I really love the language and I’m kicking myself for stopping 6 months ago haha.
Have you directly studied pitch accent?
I've watched some of Dogen's series and plan to finish it. I also pay attention to pitch numbers in dictionaries while I'm reading + listen to native audio for words I look up through Yomichan or Forvo depending on how I'm reading.
Other than that, not too much pitch accent stuff. My accent is far from perfect and my Japanese friend helps me with certain words or things, sometimes without me even asking.
Overall, still have a long way to go when it comes to pitch accent lmao

たしかに有名だけど、他に言及されてるマンガやアニメと比べたらかなり浮いてるかと。おっしゃられる通り古いですしね。
ラノベほど簡単に読めるかはわかりませんが、村上春樹の『１Q８４』とかはかなり読みやすくておもしろいと思いますよ。（MythBustersのAdam Savageが好きな小説に挙げていることを最近知りました。）
