I'm super impressed you got "hora!" into that. I know this video is dated now, you're living in Japan, and your Japanese has since leveled up. It's crazy to me that you got this good before going to Japan just doing self study. I was no where near this level when I got on the plane to Japan. I could talk some but I definitely didn't use filler words yet and they demonstrate that you've absorbed the language more I think.

  • @paulwalther5237

How old were you when you started learning Japanese? Your story sounds inspiring but also a bit more rosy than most people will experience.. certainly more than me but I started studying at age 34. I'm thinking if you start in your teens then things go a lot smoother. I had to open an account at a Bank and I guess you could say it was easy. I walked into the bank wanting to make an account and walked out with a proper bank account. But it pushed my Japanese to its limit more than I had ever had to use it before. They used keigo and a lot of words I probably studied but hadn't sunk in yet and I had to make it work based on the words I did know. I didn't use Google Translate because at the time AI translation sucked (as far as I knew.. this was 2015 or 2016). While I did read some manga as a beginner (hikaru no go in particular) but I didn't make it a focus. I had studied European languages when I was younger and my impression of a French comic book was that it was no better than the dialogues you get from a beginner textbook. Maybe slightly better. But Japanese is a whole different animal and I probably should have read lots of manga instead. It's weird I finally started reading lots of manga after I was able to read light fiction in Japanese. Backwards right? Also, your video also makes me want to go play video games in Japanese. I'm not sure if that's the intended goal... I think you're hoping to inspire people to study Japanese more not play video games per se.

I'm pretty sure my Japanese vocabulary stagnated the day I stopped doing Anki (for Japanese). I still watch anime and read manga once in a while but without daily reviews from Anki there's just no way it's going to get better. And I just don't care enough to do Japanese Anki on top of the Korean vocabulary I'm working on now. I keep hearing how terrible flash cards are and how you should be getting your vocabulary from immersion you would need to be doing some intense immersion to really increase your vocabulary is my subjective impression comparing myself to studying Korean with and without flash cards.

You're only 4 years in...wait until you're 10 years in. Your endurance gets even better. I'm referring to reading Japanese whether you want to or not. I think with latin script languages this isn't really a thing though. Once you get used to them.. it's like reading English. I'm learning Korean and it has the Hangul script and honestly I'm still better at reading Japanese with all the horrible kanji because I spent so many years with it. I specifically chose to study Korean because it had an alphabet. What they don't tell you is that yeah it has an alphabet and there's only 24 letters in it but actually they're used to make syllable blocks not unlike the syllabry used to Japanese/Chinese and of course they cram several letters into each block so that you have to get used to the shapes of not just 24 letters but all the syllable blocks they form. You're not studying Korean. But just in case you were thinking about it this information will be of use to you I'm sure.

The stuff people complain about may just be obsolete. Most of those were commonly discussed 10 years ago already. Also, when I watch videos by people who migrated to my country they're always full of misunderstandings. Depending on the specifics of each individual's situation, some things may br harder and that could lead to overgeneralization.

After 5 years of immersing in English everuday, including being able to understand audio at 2x comfortably, when I got in an environment where I needed to use English all day I did experience the fatigue you refer to, which caught me by surprise. This is an underdiscussed phenomenon.

You say things like "it just makes sense" about foreigners having a hard time getting a credit card, etc, and how you don't know why they "freak out" about it. Sure, it "makes sense" that it's easy for nationals to get credit cards etc., but just look at it from the perspective of someone who wants the credit card for what ever reason(s) they may want it. It's important to them and maybe frustrating. It's okay. Theory of mind.

    • @HypotheticalTiger
      @HypotheticalTiger 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

It might be frustrating to not be able to get a credit card when you want one but credit cards aren’t a necessity and not being able to get one doesn’t change almost anything besides needing to have money in order to spend it. In fact, most people are better off not getting one in the first place because it’s just a way for people who are bad with money to make bad decisions and throw themselves into debt. I personally don’t think it’s a giant thing to get worked up about when it’s pretty logical as to why it might be harder to get one as a foreigner. People act like they’re entitled to getting them and use not being able to easily get one as just another reason to add to the list of “things that make it hard to live in Japan as a foreigner” which I find kind of unnecessary. It’s very common to see people attribute a lot of problems to just being a foreigner when the reason is probably a little more nuanced than that even if being a foreigner is part of it. Hopefully that makes sense!

@@HypotheticalTiger I think for some people it is about building credit so they can get a mortgage etc. I am not 100% sure how the mortgage process works in Japan, but if it is anything like Canada, you need to have a decent credit history. In my case, I am not super worried about credit because I have foreign dollars, but it is just something I keyed in on from when I was in my 20s (mid 30s now) in Canada and trying to get my foot in the real estate market etc. Mortgage brokers won't even look at you unless you have a credit history (and a good one at that).

Im coming up on 1 year studying Japanese, but maybe only 6 months doing AJATT adjacent studying. I definitely already have the same feeling of getting both the "man my Japanese sucks" and "damn my Japanese is getting so good" on the same day. I just finished my first LN/Novel (the standard また、同じ夢を見ていた recommendation). I kinda wish I enjoyed reading manga in english before starting immersion... I enjoy reading it in Japanese but it's pretty hard to jam it in to my routine. 928 cards mined from anime. 177 day streak on anki, but my anki reviews are SO lazy, I pass most stuff... Thanks for the update as always! I always love watching these since you have a realistic perspective on immersion instead of the typical "IF YOU ENJOY ENGLISH CONTENT YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG" mantra.

    • @HypotheticalTiger

90% of the time if it’s a word with multiple kanji in it, I know them from other words already so it’s easy to look it up. If there’s no audio so I can hear the reading I might use google translate’s draw feature and draw the kanji. Or just skip it and move on, I don’t really need to look up every unknown word to understand things anymore so it’s not a big deal if I just skip looking words up

I can’t point to a specific time but there were definitely periods of time where I would take a break and not really do any active immersion besides seeing some tweets on Twitter. I think it’s completely normal for that to happen and it’s best to allow yourself to take some time away and come back when you feel like you’re able to. Best thing to remember is that it’s a marathon and not a race so it’s okay to take a break at points if you’ve hit your limit

@@vanilla12gorilla Oh yeah I definitely prefer japanese culture too lol, but I chose french cause I love the sound of the language and I felt like I might get gains faster if I did a language closer to english.

So happy for you and glad to see the update. I posted on the last video about how you inspired me to hop back into things again and you responded which was super cool and really encouraging, just wanted to confirm I've been back at it. I just hit 500 anki cards in my deck, it's not great but it's my first exciting milestone. Started reading a volume of manga I've had sitting for years and the first few pages took 1-2 weeks. Now I'm zooming through 5-11 pages per sitting. It's really encouraging to feel the difference. Thanks for the inspiration and am really hoping for continued updates. Hoping for your continued success!

Let’s gooo 🥳 super glad that things are going well! Soon 500 cards will turn into 1000, then 2000, and so on! Nice to see that you’ve been having a good time reading manga even if it took a while at first. I completely agree that getting faster and faster feels amazing and is a great motivator. Thanks a lot for watching and the comment, really means a lot! 😁

26:00 I just moved January this year and I can totally relate. Except i follow more music and idols rather than anime events. Everytime they tweeted some event going on i would always feel sad because i was in America. Now I live here and it feels so good to be able to join the events

where do you read the manga in japanese? Do you buy physical copies since you're in Japan, or is there somewhere you read them online?

I prefer physical volumes and want to have a big bookshelf of them one day but for now I mainly read online. Nyaa is a great onomatopoeia 😉

@@HypotheticalTiger Lol!!! I know that site well. I use it for games haha but didn't know it jp manga too. I would say be careful though because the laws in japan I hear are hella strict when it comes to... well, you know, taking up a flag and searching for the one piece 😂

I filmed one before I moved to Japan, not too much has changed probably. I’m definitely better than I was in this video but it’s hard to really know what has changed. Probably in the future I’ll upload another speaking video eventually th-cam.com/video/byZOVQRIF-s/w-d-xo.html

As always, love the video. From last year you mentioned you were big chilling playing games in Japanese and that's where I'm at (my own 3 year mark). it feels great, when there is a word I don't know I'm just like "Whatever" I don't worry about it. I can't believe its been another year! Your videos inspire me, I'll never live in Japan but I'm happy to call myself bilingual. No matter the gaps in my knowledge, as you say, other people would call me that so it's okay if I do it. I definitely agree with you. I'll be visiting Japan for the first time next year, so that will be fun. :)

That’s awesome to hear! I’m glad things are going well 😁 I hope things keep going well and that you have a good time in Japan once you visit! I’ll definitely be making a 5 year update, always fun to update everyone on what’s going on and it gives me an excuse to talk about Japanese for an hour 😂
