    Just a general hint regarding the squeal etc normal inductors and coils squeal when they are being stressed. most common cause of stress is to much current being passed through the coil, inductor etc. in other words its being stressed overload. But the big clue you gave was when you tapped the power supply and the squeal stopped. That points to a dry joint some where in the PSU. also because you have pointed out the console has suffered over heating this can cause components that have a poor connection to be intermittent because of thermal expansion and contraction . This type of fault is the biggest type of failure in the whole electronics industry. 1st lesson i learned doing repairs was HEAT Kills electronics 2 power surges Kill Electronics 3 static discharge Kills Electronic.4 incorrect voltages Kills electronics and can manifest its self with no end of strange faults and effects. BTW love the videos keep it up

    I bought in a perfectly working ps3 to one of their stores once and they did their checks and insisted it was broken. Obviously one dropped it and either no one saw or the rest of the staff covered for them. At the time I didn't care but since then I tend to buy discs/carts only on eBay for cheaper and "borrow" the cases from CeX to make up for the fact they ripped me off 90 quid at the time. I figure I still have about 50 cases or so left until I consider the debt settled tbh.

    I worked at GameStop 15 years ago. The company policy was, "Blow the vents out and put it in a "GameStop Refurbished" box. That didn't fly with me. I cleaned out every console like you just did minus the power supply unless there was a concern on the trade-in. I never wanted to ruin someone's day over corporate policy. I took apart every trade in the back room, bought my own thermal paste for work in case a console needed it and supplied my store with canned air (for me basically). You hit the nail on the head by comparing them to GameStop. Sub from me.

    You're a good man.
    Well designed PSUs normally have a high value bleed resistor across the high voltage caps to discharge them, however, you're bang on not to trust them, in my experience they tend to fail and often leave the caps floating at full voltage. I've had a few near misses and one time did a bit of damage when I shorted a 400v cap on a TV chassis (with the TV off!).
    The other scary bit about TVs (at least when I used to repair them) is the ~27KV that's powering the anode of the tube. We used to use a couple of screwdrivers to manually discharge those and a favorite prank was to creep up behind someone doing it and clap once really loud. Fun times!

      Electrolytic capacitors also have a bit of a similar effect like batteries, where they’ll recover a partial charge after a discharge, so it’s usually a good idea to dump the charge through a suitable resistor, and then leave the shorting resistor connected until work is completed.

    Ok, so, basically, why PSU can hold a charge is when the current has no way out, is blocked. But, in your case, you had a Mo/Bo plugged in which has its own capacitors, and that Mo/Bo took the most of the power of this PSU. But, if PSU could be faulty and not let go on the secondary winding for instance, yes, your big capacitor could easily hold over 300V. At least that's my experience :).

      yeah, I took a few items into my local CeX and about an hour later, I got a text message from them (I was at home by that time!) saying that my items were not able to be "tested" etc when they were fine. Same with discs, if there's a scratch on the inside ring, they can't take it in as "it's broken".
      I schooled my local CeX shop once on that, I said that isn't a crack, it's a scratch. IF it was a crack, you could tell immediately (since a crack would move when you flex the disc either side).

    That soot is typically from burning a lot of candles. Yes just those normal scented Yankee Candles (or any brand). I used to test indoor air quality for a living. Burning candles produces high enough VOC to make looking for anything else very difficult.
    If you burn a lot of candles and don’t believe me goto your forced air HVAC system and pull out the air filter. If it’s black that isn’t normal, dust isn’t black what you are seeing is soot from candles.
    Fireplaces can cause issues but unlike candles they vent out of the chimney and unless you fire it up with the damper shut will pull air from within the house into the fireplace not vent it’s gases into your house.

    It’s commin sense for companys like CEX won’t open it or touch it if there is any liquid damage it covers them from someone that has not declared it plus they then can offer you a voice to buy a new one or upgrade it.
    That’s why it’s smart business for CEX to make a sale & not get sued.
    It’s smart business for any company that’s why they do basic repairs if you want to repair it fully you ether pay Sony to look at it in full & run full diagnostics on it but most would say it’s better buying a new one .

    Loved how when you said some sort of soot of some sort you mentioned it although it was okay. Got a laugh and enjoyed the video. By the way a quick question you might see and answer. I have a cuh-7215b that suddenly shut off while backing out of YT videos. 1 second BLOD. You can hear power try to go to the disc drive maybe but idk. Anyways I can't really find anything wrong with it except for maybe what are the solder contact points for the HDMI and other ports back there. The shiny portion of the points seems to be fractured and disintegrated/flaked off a moderate amount on all those points. Could this be the cause of a problem? There also seems to be a yellow/brownish hot spots maybe around the black optical cable port, controller port solder points and HD port solder points. Looks like a light smear of sauce or something but it a layer of the board or flux perhaps? Idk. All I know is the original HD died, replaced with crucial mx500, pads and good paste. Cleaned once or twice since then but then got lazy and it had moderate build up of dust/hair this time when it did this BLOD out of nowhere on me. Never heard the fan kick up higher than low while doing anything ever since the SSD and service. (NVG-002) I realize this is a massive comment with multiple questions in it but maybe you or even another reader in the comments could offer me your thoughts about those things. Also apparently my PSU is good. I tested it plugged in with the correct pins of the plug jumped and it tested just under 12v and 5v when probing each test point. Like by less than half a volt. 11.8, 4.8. Is there a way I can restore the flaking/disintegrating solder contact points for the rear board ports? Idk what else to test or how.

  • @123mikeyd321
    @123mikeyd321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very good advice to be wary of touching those capacitors in the primary side of the PSU. I'm crap at explaining things but in a fully working PSU, capacitors should discharge quite quickly if the DC secondary side is still connected to the console when the AC primary supply is unplugged. If the DC output isn't connected or the console isn't taking power when AC mains is unplugged then there "should" be part of the PSU that discharges the capacitor, but can take a bit longer. If you have a faulty PSU and the discharge resistor isn't doing it's job (and you wouldn't be able to tell in most cases) then all bets are off and you could get a good belt off a capacitor even after an hour. Coil whine comes from anything inductive, so yes both the transformers but also the inductors or any wire-wound components. Couldn't really hear any in this video. I'm old school and shy away from anything surface mount. In the case of that PSU a quick check / wiggle test for dry joints on the solder side of the circuit board where any components solder through might have been what I'd have done just for peace of mind if a tap fixed it. Liking your videos, thanks. I

    Can hold a charge for days, except it can't and you can see why by just looking at it, there are discharge resistors there plain as day. Those caps, start discharging as soon as power is lost, within a min or 2 they should be down to nonlethal voltages.

    • @TheCod3r
      @TheCod3r  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      *should* discharge being the key word mate, unless the discharge resistor goes bad. Yes they should discharge, but they don't always, and it isn't worth the risk!

    Haven’t trusted CEX for selling to since late 2014 (might’ve been early 2015). They messed up my iMac screen and tried to make out as though the issue had already been there. I won’t go into further details than that. The thing was in perfect condition earlier that very same day. It’s left with them for “testing” and suddenly it has backlight bleed in the corner that makes it impossible for them to sell.

      Be careful to take photos of serial numbers as well on everything including Graphics cards to controllers as they will switch parts and say yours was broken unfortunately. Most people just leave their stuff there without bothering to take photos.

    Hi Cod3r, do you fix PS4 controllers as the new ones suffer drift I’ve got 2 or three that don’t work very well at all I’ve tried but I’m not good with soldering and apparently changing the part needs little bit doing. Keep up the great work 👍🏽

    As far as i'm aware coil wine is perfectly fine, i've had it on every single console since the 360, i get it even more so on high end gear. I've never heard coil wine coming from a power unit though so that's a weird one.

    What about hitting the power button after unplugging the device to perhaps discharge the power supply a little? I bought a ps4 the other day with a non working discdrive + button and after replugging the cables everything started working 😂 I was confident enough to do a drive repair. Cost me 75 bux and had firmware 4.7 on it. Mustve been sitting on a shelf forever. Also replaced the thermal paste and cleaned the rollers cause it wouldnt take discs well 👍 Love watching your videos and fiddling with electronics myself. Nice easy fix this one sometimes you just gotta bang it 🤣🤣

    It's not a question if it's fixable or not, most big companies look at the cost & time efficiency so most of the time they just discard the product. It's more economical for big company's to write it off under industry insurance. I worked for big tech company's when board level repair was worth it or specialized equipment that couldn't be replaced & board level was the only option but now days replacing a simple ribbon cable valued at $3 bucks even if so cheap the labour & process or warranty guarantee the company's just write it off. This great for me I gut it & the shell gets destroyed under issuance, I can buy a shell for cheap or come across broken unit & perform a transplant resulting in a almost brand new unit for less than $22 saved myself $1978 for something that only came out on the market less than 6 to 8 months ago.

    I would probably have to guess CEX has some sort of performance metrics for staff, basically requiring them to do repairs quickly. And quite often you get results like this, where staff member will want to cut down on time as much as possible, so they have to jump to conclusions without opening a console and probably just used this console to "improve" his statistics, without spending time on it. Since sometimes statistic targets get so tight that they are basically just making staff to look for quickest ways out. Like I get ticket "internet doesn't work, reboot doesn't help" and find out that modem has uptime of few months and actual customers issue is that they expected ISP router to cover multiple floors... but whoever sent me that ticket got really great statistics on how quickly they handled customer. :-D

    • @halfbakedproductions7887
      @halfbakedproductions7887 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm also willing to guess that the sort of person employed by CEX is not the sort of person who has the intimate knowledge on how to repair stuff, or even how it's broken in the first place.
      Let's be honest - if you did have that knowledge, you wouldn't be working at CEX.
