***** Spoiler update alert ***** I did contact the seller and open a dispute, where I eventually decided to take a £50 partial refund. The reason was I couldn't really be bothered to wait 10 days with eBay for a resolution. To be clear, the seller should have noted all the issues in the description. After contacting the seller they claimed it went to a repair shop, again that should have been in the description and it wasn't! I still truly believe this was intentional deceit but £120 for a couple of donor boards, a disc drive, psu, fan, battered case and a working SSD ( which is worth £150 alone) isn't too bad of a deal.
That's some bullshit.. I hate when eBay sellers are not up front and honest about what they sell. I always contact them with many questions before I purchase.. that's on anything I buy especially if they have a return policy if what they are selling is not legit. I feel for you man.
I used to repair all consoles phones and laptops but I stopped 8 years ago unless for friends and family. eBay sellers were just becoming worse and worse and the amount of people over paying for broken rubbish was crazy. Everytime I think about having another look on eBay I watch your videos and they bring me back to my senses thanks for that lol anyway good luck for the future better luck next time take care
At least you got a partial refund and broke even. Frustrating for you to receive a console in this state. There is no reason that the ssd should be locked to the console when ssd’s start reaching EOL the console is as good as dead.

Yeah they do tend to side with the buyer most of the time. I've won a few cases as a seller though. Depends who you speak to on the phone really. Unfortunately ebay policies are messed up sometimes
You probably could’ve ran that sdd though a recovery program it probably would’ve recovered the partition cuz idk if you know this but once you delete something it actually does get deleted the data is still physically there still most likely
Doesn't British postage have insurance here in the states anything over a pound is insured for $100 and you can get more insurance, you can't blame the seller for damage caused by the people shipping your package.
They do depending on the service, but most people just use the cheap ebay shipping option or don't pay extra for insurance. Technically it is the sellers fault though. I've sent several Series X consoles to customers and never had one damaged because I package them correctly
I'm really surprised they lock the SSD per console. I swapped the HDD in an Xbox One X a few years ago and I had to format the HDD with a script, so it had the right GUID values but once this was done it installed OSU fine. Surprised something like this doesn't work with the Series X|S
Yeah the xbox one consoles were perfectly fine, this is nothing more than a deliberate attempt by Microsoft to prevent repair. There was no reason to ever lock them down but they did it anyway. They're asking for trouble because the only reason people have never hacked the xbox one consoles is because they had no reason too. Easy emulation and easy to repair, yet these ones people have a reason to try and they will very likely succeed. There are much smarter people in the world than the boffins at Microsoft and I truly hope they inflict a world of pain on them for their corporate greed
You are well within your rights to return it for not as described from the damage to the case alone before you even opened it up. It could well be a different one to the one pictured in the advert
damn, you would have a ball buying on polish auction sites. Full of cheap dead consoles, easy to return even to the private sellers when somethings not right, free delivery...
This is why we need Hackers that's can develop tools to reprogram and unlock "locked" features by Microsoft. Such as unlocking a DVD Drive or copying the Nand. Hopefully they find a way to replace the original SSS with a spare.
but even thou you have the spare-parts and donor boards, it's a scam-sell anyways. that is the gamble with ebay nowadays. And this "repair Shop" it went in, should consider to shut the doors permanently. Because obviously they don't know, what they're doing.
Not a waste of time. Learned about how stupid this SSD pairing is. And learned never to buy from this absolute clown on eBay. Thank you for not being afraid to name and shame them, BTW. Too many people will complain about something like this but not say who it was so that the rest of us can avoid them.
Annoying mate. There are a lot of scammers on ebay. I won a phone fair and square. When it came to pay, the seller cancelled the auction because they didn't think the price was high enough. I was fuming lol. Some people are just arseholes. Keep up the great videos please.
From what I've seen they're using an encrypted partition formatted as XBFS. That partition contains just over 130MB of data which appears to contain some highly encrypted keys (but we can't see the contents of the partition). It seems to me like at least RSA 2048 or RSA 4096 encryption so cracking that may be impossible
After watching full vid, dude fair play thought it was gonna be something else not what happened to you. How did they dare even sell it in ebay in first place?????
Yeah people on ebay who don't state that there has been work on a device you are buying are deceptive because they know full well it would lower the price of what they are selling. I don't get who they are kidding either, even if they are saying oh its just for parts, it should state we are selling it for parts becuase we tried repairing it and it didn't work out, that way the buyer can decide whether its worth that value or not.
It's probably just an illusion or the angle the solder settled at, but at 16:01 it almost looks like they tried to use a type of small gauge tabbing wire to connect those right leads. Also, at those times when I feel like my own mediocre wiring and soldering skills are sub par, it's comforting to know that there's people out there who are much much worse at it. Years back I used to take scrap electronics from the junk pile at work to teach myself how to do simple things, like take ICs off or swap various parts without destroying them. Starting out was a complete shit show. This thing... Has that same energy. Just to guess, I wonder if this was originally a bricked machine that was used as a practice piece to teach someone new how to do some component replacement/repair. That or someone's XBox broke and had a friend who told them "I know a guy" [that could fix it for cheap].
this might be a shot in the dark but cant you use a data recovery tool to try and recover the data that was on the SSD before it was formatted, could that even work? Excellent Content by the way keep it up.
Cheers bud, yeah I do plan to try that in Linux, but I have a feeling even if I can restore the partitions I might not get the full unique encrypted key back 😮💨
Well wouldn't that just rip your undies! Unfortunately there will always be someone out there learning, as we did, how to fix stuff and they'll do things they weren't aware could brick a device. Once upon a time you could learn your way out of a stuff up and fix what you did but now the way manufacturers are making things one can make irreversible mistakes so easily. It makes for a huge gamble on if you're purchasing someone else's mistakes. Glad you didn't lose out too much in the end.
Yeah I agree mate. Sucks that Microsoft paired the drive. I don't even blame the last tech for that because the OC and traces can be repaired, but the SSD is the point of no return 🤷
Hiya yes spares or repair that means it can be repaired or broken up for its parts and should be discribed as if the unit just fails but in this case you are right to ask for ypur money back good video and informative Ebay needs to set out rules for spares or repair sales keep up the good work mate
Thanks mate, yeah the seller was definitely intentionally deceptive in this listing. If he had been honest from the start I'd never have bought the console at all
I am 1000% confident that you could get that dent out sand down the case paint it what ever color you want and you could sell it for more than 50 quid I'm a yank so dont hurt me too ad if i said that wrong lmfao. But on a serious note do it up nice and auction it off to patron's or subscribers.
I just purchased a high value Game Boy game on eBay that was listed as “doesn’t read”. I took it apart to find that the previous owner destroyed several legs on the RAM module when changing the battery. How would you handle that? I was able to swap the ROM to a $4 donor and the game is fully functional and is worth more than what I paid for it. I sent the seller a message asking if they knew it was physically damaged.
The person who sold it knew he couldn't not fix it as that noob he is, so he destroyed the components and make sure it couldn't not be made, and got money for it. That is a sad little world, but very nice try to fix it, you are very skilled guy
Microsoft should offer the option to reformat a new drive as drive's go wrong. The seller is a total scammer. Hope you get a full refund..... All the best love the video's.
Cheers Ian. I do truly hope Microsoft release a way to pair new drives or remove pairing in future software updates, but it's Microsoft so that probably won't happen 😮💨
I bought a gameboy color from ebay with no power issue, but the seller never listed it had water damage and you couldn't tell from the pics, fuses, and power switch was good, the contacts for the buttons were completely ate off the board there was evidence of water in the screen, not even remotely possible to fix
That's a tough one because the seller can claim they didn't know. Unless it's had repair attempts previously that haven't been declared ebay may side with the seller
@@TheCod3r they said they would give a refund but then started being rude and hateful which leads me to believe they knew it was water damaged, but I took the loss because ebay disputes take too long and I've had an issue with a seller in the past and it took me a month to get my money back. But I guess sometimes we will get bad sellers because I've seen a few people that buy stuff from ebay to repair get ripped off sometimes, and I see they got you as well
There's a slim chance you might be able to recover data from an SSD even after it's been formatted. Did you try? The only other way would be to extract they key from the CPU, and I don't think anyone's been able to crack open this puppy yet. Agreed, there's absolutely no reason for Microsoft to do this.
I’ve purchased a laptop from eBay before that had a broken screen and what I received was a laptop with broken screen and missing ram and ssd. So these disgusting people really do think they can scam us easily and that we wouldn’t send it back. Lots don’t even mention things missing or what they’ve done to destroy it
could you maybe use a "recovery patition tool" to fix the ssd or it's deeper than this ? like does formating it "lock it" or something else ? otherwise if the guy only deleted all the partitions and create a new one, well, maybe there is still something to recover?
It depends really mate, because the partitions have been deleted it depends how the controller on the SSD handles that. If it just marks the partition as deleted until another partition overwrites it then maybe, but if it actually deletes it immediately then that's very unlikely to be recoverable. Conventional drives mark the space as deleted but don't delete anything until it needs that space and then it'll overwrite the old data, but these controllers could be doing anything. I will be trying it though to see how far I can go with conventional tools to recover the data

Maybe you can use this scenario to attract customers with an option to clone their drives for future failures. But then again if there's an update and the backup is older, would it still work?
I bought a samsung smart watch and the seller said it just stopped charging when i got it the inside looked like it went down with the titanic messaged them and got no reply

@@TheCod3r I've no doubt a workaround will be found, the repair community finds a way around most artificial locks.,
@@GhostMotley fingers crossed mate, a few of us ( I can't say who) are looking into it
You are well within your rights to return it for not as described from the damage to the case alone before you even opened it up. It could well be a different one to the one pictured in the advert
damn, you would have a ball buying on polish auction sites. Full of cheap dead consoles, easy to return even to the private sellers when somethings not right, free delivery...
I'd love to find some more auction sites to be honest, just never find the time to look
Может быть там удалены просто заголовки разделов, а сами данные ещё остались в каком-то виде? Есть такой шанс?
so no way to recover data from the erased partitions?
This is why we need Hackers that's can develop tools to reprogram and unlock "locked" features by Microsoft. Such as unlocking a DVD Drive or copying the Nand. Hopefully they find a way to replace the original SSS with a spare.
Yeah I agree. I'm sure Microsoft are going to be the target for hackers since they're giving hackers a reason to target them
Really enjoy your content buddy, keep up the great work 💯!! Here's to 100k+ subs.
Thanks bud, hopefully we keep growing and building a solid community 👍
but even thou you have the spare-parts and donor boards, it's a scam-sell anyways. that is the gamble with ebay nowadays. And this "repair Shop" it went in, should consider to shut the doors permanently. Because obviously they don't know, what they're doing.
Yeah I agree mate, either way the seller tried to scam someone here. That person who worked on this should be ashamed of himself/herself
That's annoying at least you will get your money back with ebay guarantee you might not need to even send it back its happened to me a few times
Can you not use restore software on the drive similar to undelete of photos ?
Not a waste of time. Learned about how stupid this SSD pairing is. And learned never to buy from this absolute clown on eBay. Thank you for not being afraid to name and shame them, BTW. Too many people will complain about something like this but not say who it was so that the rest of us can avoid them.
Cheers mate. Funnily enough the guy even said if I publish his username he will sue me. Bring on the lawsuit 😂
Annoying mate. There are a lot of scammers on ebay. I won a phone fair and square. When it came to pay, the seller cancelled the auction because they didn't think the price was high enough. I was fuming lol. Some people are just arseholes. Keep up the great videos please.
Pisses me off when people lie on description and fail to package stuff correctly
This is why I'm afraid to spend money on broken consoles .cuase they could all be possible like that console
Where the seller lies or hides details
Does MS still format the internal storage with XTAF with signatures to secure the data?
From what I've seen they're using an encrypted partition formatted as XBFS. That partition contains just over 130MB of data which appears to contain some highly encrypted keys (but we can't see the contents of the partition). It seems to me like at least RSA 2048 or RSA 4096 encryption so cracking that may be impossible
After watching full vid, dude fair play thought it was gonna be something else not what happened to you. How did they dare even sell it in ebay in first place?????
All that is good for is parts well if there our any good parts left.
At 9:33 where is the metal plate covering the socket back?
Looks like it's got a skin (sticker) on it in the picture
It definitely didn't look the same in person :(
Always check feedback. I wouldn’t go nere a seller who sold 3 items,
Wth are people doing with these consoles? I see some that look 10 years old with dents and looks like someone dragged it down the street
this might be a shot in the dark but cant you use a data recovery tool to try and recover the data that was on the SSD before it was formatted, could that even work?
How do you know he did not😮 swopped the case or even the same xbox
Makes me wonder if you actually got the same console in the ad
Hiya yes spares or repair that means it can be repaired or broken up for its parts and should be discribed as if the unit just fails but in this case you are right to ask for ypur money back good video and informative Ebay needs to set out rules for spares or repair sales keep up the good work mate
Thanks mate, yeah the seller was definitely intentionally deceptive in this listing. If he had been honest from the start I'd never have bought the console at all
At least it wasn't melting someone's limited edition switch after breaking it fully and keeping it for quite a while eh.
What are you referring to?
I am 1000% confident that you could get that dent out sand down the case paint it what ever color you want and you could sell it for more than 50 quid I'm a yank so dont hurt me too ad if i said that wrong lmfao. But on a serious note do it up nice and auction it off to patron's or subscribers.
Glad you got things sorted
Cheers bud
Is it possible to buy a used xbox series x with just a broken disc drive for a good deal? I can't afford a new one and don't use disc's anyway.
That's a tough one, but I'd say as you've attempted a repair there's not really much you can do
The person who sold it knew he couldn't not fix it as that noob he is, so he destroyed the components and make sure it couldn't not be made, and got money for it. That is a sad little world, but very nice try to fix it, you are very skilled guy
Thanks mate, I couldn't agree more
Microsoft should offer the option to reformat a new drive as drive's go wrong. The seller is a total scammer. Hope you get a full refund..... All the best love the video's.
Cheers Ian. I do truly hope Microsoft release a way to pair new drives or remove pairing in future software updates, but it's Microsoft so that probably won't happen 😮💨
I don't get why they formatted the SSD????
What’s annoying is that the ssd is pair to the console what 😅 so if the ssd completely fails & isn’t recoverable your Xbox is dead for good ??
If the SSD is married to motherboard, then you may use it (or sell it) as a PC part instead.
Yeah the SSD will work fine in a PC as there's nothing physically wrong with it
I'm coming to the west Midlands to buy my bricks, if you can get a pack of bricks for only £160!!!
But I guess sometimes we will get bad sellers because I've seen a few people that buy stuff from ebay to repair get ripped off sometimes, and I see they got you as well
Like dr House sais, Everybody lies! I dont think a shop did this :D
You say "why does someone format the SSD?"
I say why would anyone marry an SSD to a console, making it a non replaceable part?
Yeah that's a question I've been searching for an answer to since the console was released 😮💨
Microsoft needs to make a way to repair SSD’s available to the public.
Definitely mate
There's a slim chance you might be able to recover data from an SSD even after it's been formatted. Did you try? The only other way would be to extract they key from the CPU, and I don't think anyone's been able to crack open this puppy yet. Agreed, there's absolutely no reason for Microsoft to do this.
I’ve purchased a laptop from eBay before that had a broken screen and what I received was a laptop with broken screen and missing ram and ssd. So these disgusting people really do think they can scam us easily and that we wouldn’t send it back. Lots don’t even mention things missing or what they’ve done to destroy it
Yeah bud, I'm honestly sick of them. It's not even like we lose out because we can get our money back, but it's just a huge waste of our time
Wow , that seems like the seller is fishing for a buyer who won’t bother holding them accountable by getting a refund.
could you maybe use a "recovery patition tool" to fix the ssd or it's deeper than this ? like does formating it "lock it" or something else ? otherwise if the guy only deleted all the partitions and create a new one, well, maybe there is still something to recover?
It depends really mate, because the partitions have been deleted it depends how the controller on the SSD handles that. If it just marks the partition as deleted until another partition overwrites it then maybe, but if it actually deletes it immediately then that's very unlikely to be recoverable. Conventional drives mark the space as deleted but don't delete anything until it needs that space and then it'll overwrite the old data, but these controllers could be doing anything. I will be trying it though to see how far I can go with conventional tools to recover the data
Yep ebay can be an absolute doss hole sometimes
You've been totally had with this one 🤔
Hi Phil is there any chance of using recovery software to recover the key ?

Can MS re-pair a new SSD to it?
Maybe you can use this scenario to attract customers with an option to clone their drives for future failures. But then again if there's an update and the backup is older, would it still work?
I believe the key changes every time you update, so unfortunately we can't do that 😕
I bought a samsung smart watch and the seller said it just stopped charging when i got it the inside looked like it went down with the titanic messaged them and got no reply
That sucks mate I hope you got your money back
@@TheCod3r no mate bought a new board for it luckily the screen still worked some people just dont give a flying fuck keep up the good work 👍
@@jamiepowell6655 fair enough mate, I'd definitely have phoned ebay over that but glad it kinda worked out for you. Cheers buddy much appreciated
I wish I had the knowledge u have cuase then I could buy 2 broken ones and fix one to use.cuase I can't afford a new one
