  • This is a test of the 120 gr Original Wedgehead broadhead, by E L & B Outdoors.
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Wedgehead posted in parenthesis as well.
Total Wedgehead Score: 88.85 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 13.55 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.25+".5=1.75 = 4.9 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.75" = 4.9 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.25" = 3.75 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 19.35 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 200 grams = 10/10= 9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +25 grams = 9.5/10 = 8.55 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (9/10=1.8 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 15.95 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.75" = 6.75 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (56 layers=7.2 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 20 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (10/10 = 5 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: +1 for extra forgiving flight
+2 for extra super thick blades
    +1 for extra nice holes
TOTAL WEDGEHEAD SCORE: 88.85 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
    Price of Wedgehead: $16.66/head

If nothing else, they found a great combo of hardness and tool steel to work off of with other designs.

Thank you John for another great review. I've been doing some of my own tests of heads while hunting. I've been really liking the grim reaper razor cut ss whitetail special. I just took my biggest buck to date the other day. He ran 10 steps and dropped. I haven't had to track deer since I've been using the reapers.

John, 100% winner ,winner, chicken dinner !!! That is a hard steel head ! That steel plate hole, is what I always key on was devastating. The concrete shot finalized it for me when that chip came flying off. I think those fat bleeders prevented the head from sticking into the block like the Crimson Talon Cleaver did. I appreciate what the fat bleeders did, but i'd love to see this head fly without them, or with a single bevel.
John great find on a not known head from an up and coming USA company. EL and B ? For an initial effort ? You ACED the test IMHO.

I can see as well that as his product takes hold, I'm sure it's very easy to increase thickness on the inside of the cutting edge to increase weight????? It would be interesting to see this head to shot out to 70-yards? Like to also know if this head whistles thru flight????

Have you done a review on the Rocky Mtn. Switchblade yet? I used 1 for spring bear n myself n the guide were extremely impressed by it...I shoot a 480 grain 30" arrow out of a 70lbs bow n @23 yards the arrow broke 2 ribs going in n 2 on the way out n the most impressive thing was that on the way out it cut the front leg just about off!!! N had it not hit a rock it would of been fine for another go.
2 reasons I bought n tried them. First was I was looking for a hybrid for my daughter to shoot, n 2nd they were super cheap n rocky mtn. has been at it for along time so they know what their doing. So sorry NAP I'm a Rocky Mtn. Guy now.. I can't say enough about them..my bear was 268 spring bear squared just under 6' so not a typical 180 lbs bear at all

I'd just use a flat stone or a file shaped sharpener. Use a Sharpie to mark the bevel, then keep the bevel as flat to the stone as you can. You can tell if you're getting the correct bevel by the Sharpie disappearing.

How does having a shorter broad head length contribute to arrow flight?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

The greater the surface area, the more friction there is in flight, which can cause heads to plane a bit. Shorter heads tend to have less surface area and those are more forgiving in flight.

Just a couple of notes: The Sheet metal showed the down side of this head. Any educated archer understands that the lethality comes from blood capillaries being cut which results in blood loss eg: dead game.. The sheet metal showed that if you want to punch holes in something, use this head... Just don't expect quick kills.. Also I disagree that "short profile heads penetrate better".. That's 100% not an accurate statement. For an average under-educated archer, these tests show durability at best.. They do not demonstrate lethality. Please know and understand the difference.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Seth. I've tested over 200 different broadheads and that is what I have seen over & over--at least in all the test mediums I have used. The Ashby 3:1 ratio idea is flawed; based on a faulty application of mechanical advantage. The shorter profile heads, all other things equal, have less surface area, and thus less friction against those blades, resulting in better penetration.
Re the bloodletting, when a head is zipping into an animal at nearly 300 fps, capillaries are going to be cut, no doubt. The main blades were very sharp, the wedge blades were just designed to open up the wound channel. I think them being sharpened would be even better, but I also don't scoff at the notion that they add to the bloodletting and lethality as they are.
