Before you insulate the walls again, stuff steel wool (or copper mesh if you can get it) in any holes bigger than the tip of your pinky. It will block pests from getting in your walls. You can also spray foam gaps. Don’t forget to add some kind of vapor barrier to the interior side of the insulation. Older homes don’t have a vapor barrier and it can make the space damp. I’m excited to see your home come together.

  • @joany7475
    @joany7475 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +41

The black stuff on the floor is the foam-like backing to the carpet you tore up. My parents had the same carpeting. When it was laid in the 1970s, it had glue applied to the floor and then the carpet was stretched over it and trimmed. The black foam was hell to scrape up, but you need to remove it.

*Make sure your floors can bear the weight before tiling!!

Before you put up new drywall in the kitchen, You might consider installing smaller windows into the existing window openings. That would allow you to use all of the available wall space for cabinets. If you run the new windows to the top of the available openings, you should be able to easily close off the space beneath the new windows.
Also, when ever we do a demo similar to what you are doing, we will back the pickup truck or trailer to the closest window or door to the work area so that we limit the distance we have to carry all that junk.

I'm absolutely loving this series! I enjoy watching home renovation but often they're big budget and the whole project is done in one video. While it's fun, I think those kinds of shows take life out of context because it happens so fast. It is wonderful to watch your project unfold by the week, and I love how you let us know what day it is and what you're getting done each day. It's fun to notice the small wins as each step pushes the project further. It was exciting to watch the old doorframe between the kitchen and bathroom come down! It also gets me excited about my own projects and how each step matters, rather than getting discouraged by how far I have to go. Thank you so much for this content!

This is my new favorite breakfast watching! 🥰 Okay so 17 years ago, I gutted my entire kitchen to the studs and remodeled it myself. The flooring in the house was all hardwood except the kitchen was old linoleum with pine subfloor. I chose to do a pre-finished darker stained hardwood in my kitchen and it was the BEST decision! It held up to our dirty shoes tracking in things from the garden and chickens. I had throw rugs to catch stuff but we were hard on it and it was so comfortable on the feet. Lemme tell ya, TILE IS COLD AND HARD. So if you haven't decided yet on what to do, I would suggest get the same hardwood and do it through the whole house. It will also make it look bigger because the whole house will be the same flooring. We bought ours through Lumber Liquidators and got a medium budget one that we knew was prefinished. It was perfect. I will absolutely do hardwood in my kitchens in the future. BTW, I'm in Missouri so we get some pretty cold winters. The wood floors are just warmer. Obviously, if budget is an issue then maybe just to plywood floors with laminate tiles. That is the cheapest and will still be easier on the feet. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!

Hi, awesome videos! I wanted to share a tip for making drywall cleanup a little easier-I've done a LOT of drywall demo throughout my primary house and 3 others. Get a cheap tarp and lay it on the floor, after you haul the big pieces away, you can carry the aggravating(and seemingly endless) littler pieces and dust out by rolling up the edges and carrying it out to be dumped in the dumpster or wherever the trash goes. Once the tarp gets too ragged after many times of this use, you can roll up the last load it will carry and throw it all away as well.

For the dehydrator ask the Plummer to help it drain into the sewer via the floor with a hose attachment. It looks like mine. There will be a place to attach in the back. Otherwise during curtain times of year it’ll pool so much water will shut off full often. I was so happy to figure this out. Hope this helps.
For the canning area look into adding a space for a root cellar. Though it doesn’t have to be a big space. Just dark for storage and maintain the temp for your over winter crops like potatoes, varieties of squash, etc. You can look up how to make one on a shelf wrapped in fabric if room is an issue to building one.
That shelf you mentioned and showed was probably for canning supplies. Have one in my vintage property basement from 1900. Plus I’ve seen ones like that being used in other older homes.
Adding a freezer in the basement for some food storage you harvest and things you wanna buy bulk to help keep longer … like I buy a 25 pound sack of organic oats I use daily. It goes in the freezer. Except for a container full of in the kitchen.
7 cubic foot top open works for me. You could get one on sale. I’m able to store plenty of summer crop veggies prepped plus canning which takes longer. Plus the organic bulk stuff when it’s on sale.
Your fridge/freezer is similar to mine in size. You won’t regret the extra freezer space in the basement. It helps also with some bulk buying from the store if you wanna save time running to the store for everyday food needs or recipes.
Hope this is helpful. Enjoying the work. I’m in the process of renovating a vintage property. Your work is inspirational.

Props to you for undertaking such a challenging project!
Hopefully, with the profits from your other home sale, you'll have enough $$$$ to cover the majority of expenses you'll contend with truly making this old house your new home.
Through all of this enormous effort, it appears that you are on track for making this layout work for your needs and vision.
Keep up the great work and thanks for bringing us along on this journey! 👍

You should consider doing a vaulted ceiling in your new house, if possible. It would make the space feel larger and you could put in ceiling fans....also maybe do the spray insulation to ensure no air gets in at all. I'm so glad that man sold you the house instead of the fire department burning it down!!! It's such fun watching your progress!! 💖🙏🏻

Very good progress, Miss! I could never understand why my late brother (who was a short, skinny guy) always used huge 32 oz. framing hammers until I helped him during some demo work. Big ass hammers with straight backs make excellent demo tools. Between that and a Wunderbar, there was nothing he couldn't take down/destroy :) I agree with your removing that 'doorway" between the kitchen and bathroom, it is just in the way and looks much better gone. Looking forward to the next video! Much respect and high regards,

having insulated my own basement and garage after a remodel. I highly recommend using the mineral/rock wool insulation. It stays in its shape out of the packaging. You can cut it with a bread knife and it's real easy to cut notches to fit around objects like pipes and outlet boxes.

Home builder and flooring/tile store owner. The black stuff under the flooring, looks like old remnants of a glue down carpet pad. It’ll be a little work but a nice razor scraper should take it up. (Yes, take it up. It is always best to start with a clean subfloor.) The algorithm popped up one of your videos, we’re enjoying watching along! Great job jumping in with both feet!! It’s the only way! Thank you for the content.

Try pouring really soapy, very hot water over that stuck flooring
If it’s glued down it will seperate from you4 wood floor ( and do no harm)
I discovered this tip while renovating my first house , pregnant and clumsy I tripped over a hot soapy bucket, ( we were removing wallpaper) cried , until I discover3d the vile green glued down rubber backed carpet was separating in big weird “ bubbles”

The plaster seeping through are called keys which gives the plaster a solid grip, enabling it to stick firmly to the surface. The plaster looks to be in excellant condition. Plaster is amazing stuff, durable and mold resistant.

I recently purchased a fixer upper myself. My house is almost 40 years old and it looked like the 1980’s the first time I walked in the door. It’s mostly cosmetic with some minor repairs. Not as extensive as yours but I’m enjoying making it my own with my personal touch. Im doing most of the work myself. I enjoy it. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with your house.

Since you were replacing both the roof and the furnace, I would have completely removed the chimney. It would have been 1 less hole in the roof to seal from leaks, and clear up floor space both in the basement and the main floor. When replacing the furnace, get the high efficiency type that uses PVC venting out the side of the house. Or better yet, a heat pump with electric backup furnace. For DIY reference, Mr Cool makes whole house (not a mini split) DIY heat pump systems that come charged with refrigerant. I would only keep the chimney if you absolutely wanted a real functioning fireplace. Real fireplaces can also sometimes cause higher insurance rates, so factor in how much you really want that functional fireplace....

You should vacuum the insulation bags when you have tied them up. I have made my own vac bags before by using gaffer tape on a patch inside & out, then perforate with lots of teeny holes over about 1” square & suck the air out with another unperforated piece of tape ready to seal the holes. It saves so much SPACE when loading up to o to the dump if you aren’t using a skip - or even if you are!
