Hey Tia, I am Bill. By trade I am a carpenter. I have done several remodels on houses like that in my area. I wish I was close enough to help you. I hope you don't mind if I offer some advice. I know you have a plan and I am sure your family (dad and grandpa) is going to help and have suggestions for you to do things. I think if you start in the basement first and work on that it would be best. Move everything out if you can. Check all the walls for dampness and mold. Where the cracks are look down the wall and make sure the foundation is not bulging in and still straight up and down then sealing the cracks with a Hydraulic cement or a high strength mortar would be best. If you have mold, get a mold cleaner and scrub the areas with mold, place a fan down there to dry out the basement after cleaning. After sealing the cracks, brush the walls off and clean up all the dust. Coat the walls and floor with a waterproofing paint or sealer before they install the furnace. Easier to do than after the furnace is installed. A dry basement is a blessing. Sure you may still have to use a dehumidifier but it will not have to run as much if you seal the walls and floor and any cracks. Next fix the roof. Those two things are the most important, so do them first. I have more advice if you like. Just trying to help. Take care.
I’ve renovated quite a few house like that with my husband who is a carpenter by trade and I second everything you are advising! A dry house is a happy house! 😊
I'm an old lady but my Dad was a carpenter and I've lived in several different places and you are correct. Make sure the foundation and roof is dry and solid. Moisture can ruin a great house.
You are a generous guy offering g your experience with these older homes. I hope she will heed your advice. The foundation is paramount to the life of this sweet home. The roof is also connected to the basement with water issues and more.
Excellent suggestion! After the decluttering the basement and roof should be next. A working heat source is important so you can continue to work inside during the winter months...
It is so refreshing that a young person is restoring a home instead of just tearing it down. History has values that we all can learn from. Good for you. 😁
This is one of the coolest projects on TH-cam atm. What a bargain. As somebody who has flipped a few houses and done 100% of the work solo, watching this makes me antsy. I want to dive in and work on it! Can't wait to see the progress in the future. Doing great so far. Cheers!
It must have been a breath of fresh air to remove all the items from your house. It looks so spacious now. Thank you for bringing us on this journey with you!
Your foundation is extremely important, I think you should have the cracks in the walls repaired from the outside and either coat them or use the proper sheeting to waterproof the walls and make sure you have weeping tile, you will not regret doing this properly for many years to come.
I lived in a area of Indiana for a little while where almost every house had a foundation issue and I would highly suggest you just deal with the horizontal crack immediately because you do not want that to become a problem,it just gets more expensive as the years go by. A solid foundation/dry basement = a happy house.
OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have 8-tracks on your kitchen counter....I haven't seen those since the early 80's. Your making steady progress...great job.
Best thing i ever did was put my furnace on a concrete block platform. I built a wood frame around the blocks so they never move. Three weeks after the furnace was installed the basement flooded when the sump pump quit but my new furnace was high and dry. Try the wet towel trick on the patches on the floor, that looks like it could be horse glue.
you made the right decision about the bathroom, it'll be a lot less costly on plumbing to leave it where it is and just expand the stuff on the floor is glue LOVE that Tammy's car--my mother named me Tammy from the 1950's movie with Debbie Reynolds you should have kept that old white dresser with the mirro, it could have been really pretty
Great job. Every room cleaned out is a way forward. The hardwood floors look amazing. The black stuff is glue. The floor is worth the effort to redo. It will give that country vibe with a small area rug. Watching with excitement.
Yes, that black stuff on the floor boards is an adhesive. We found it under the vinyl tiles in our 1870s house in Mississippi. It was really hard removing that adhesive from the wood! I'm enjoying your videos!
I'm falling more and more in love with your house as you're cleaning it out! I think it's beautiful and has some great natural light coming in! I can't wait to see everything you do to it and I'm going to be here for all of it! Thank you for being such an inspiration🥰
Maybe you should consider making the front bedroom your studio and the bedroom next to the bathroom should be your bedroom for the convenience of being next to the bathroom. This way you won't have to walk through the entire house if you need to use the bathroom at night.
That house is LOADED with treasures! I could name so many but I'll just say if that electric frying pan works, KEEP IT! They make the best meals. Plus you don't have to waste propane cooking nor turn on the oven on hot days. I've had several over the yrs. and love it. I live alone and don't have a stove. I rent and needed the 220 for a dryer so landlord took stove out. I use electric fry pan, toaster oven, crock pots and a Corning Ware electric hot plate. My daughter does the big holiday and birthday gatherings. You worked hard this past week getting all that stuff out. Impressive! And those hardwood floors. siiiiiigh.... ❤
So nice to see a home owner actually do what they say they will and act punctually. He deserves a big clap, and you offering to help was amazing also! Can't wait to see more content!
Hey Tia, I would like to suggest it would be beautiful to put glass in the cabinet doors. Then try to find some vintage pulls to put on the drawers. That would be so beautiful. It will be wonderful to have a place of your own to live and feel safe and how happy you will be that you accomplished something your worked at. Great Job! I can't wait to see the outcome.
The black you are seeing on the hardwood floor is probably glue. We redid the flooring in a house that looked like that. Surprisingly all it took was some spray on Awesome degreaser from Dollar Tree and a brush! That took off the residue and grime and we didn't even have to sand the floors! Just applied a new layer of poly. Hopefully it will be that easy for you, too!
You are a Diamond in this world of rough rocks. I can not tell you enough how happy it makes me to watch your progress. You will not only have $ and sweat equity in this charmer but also a deep emotional attachment filled with pride and knowledge from all you have accomplished. I want the Tammy Car!! LOL
The floor under the carpet it's glue not mold. Wear your mask when sanding the floor. I hope you keep it as a hardwood floor. It will take a lot of work. I did all my sanding by hand. We could not afford an electric sander . God bless you and your family. Happy remodeling 🧡. I'm so glad you're going to keep the 2nd room as a bedroom. 🛠
@@heidilady Hi , yes maam by hand it took me a few months but when it was all done it looked so good my husband even liked it. Watching you with the tires made me smile Ive been lifting race tires for over 16 years but not no longer. Im enjoying your videos. God bless you and keep you.🛠🦋
A horizontal crack in the foundation is a potential red flag. It's a sign the house may be sinking in that spot and needs to be inspected by a professional.
Hello Tia, I’m Fran and I’m from Chester in the UK! I accidentally found your first post last week and was hooked! A lot of progress this week with the clearing. I’m in it for the long haul for sure and look forward to seeing move onwards and upwards with your home. Definitely look into what Bill, who posted a comment before me, says as I think it’s good advice but I’m sure you know what you’re doing. Till next week then!!!!
Switch the bedrooms so that the spare room is your sleeping chamber and the other one is for your studio....because it is closer to the bathroom!! You don't want to go that far in the night haha
I was thinking the same thing. Also since she wants to use her spare bedroom as an art studio, the front room will get lots of natural light by having windows on two walls! The large closet is also in between the two rooms so it'd be really easy to switch the closet to open into the other room instead of the front room. Hope all of that made sense!
Great progress! I like that you decided to keep the 2nd bedroom and expand the bathroom. That may save you some some and money with not having to move plumbing and fixtures. I have a suggestion for those basement stairs. You'd do yourself a favor if you place some wood on those missing steps. Watching you go down them with the camera is scary. One bad placement of a foot and you could really hurt yourself. And as a carpenter, I know how tiring it can be going up and down stairs while working on a project. A few 1x8 or 2x8 screwed to the missing stairs would be a lot safer and comfortable. And less exhausting. If you plan on refinishing the floor in the bedroom by sanding and re staining the stuff on the floors shouldn't be a big problem. Keep up the good work! Its a slow process, but you'll get there!
Great to see someone that is not afraid of a ton of work. Restoring faith in society one video at a time. But that crack in the basement is something you need to have someone look at for sure.
Kid.... I know your Father is proud of you... I know this I'm a Dad too!! I'm proud of you and I don't even know you!!! The black under the carpet is either adhesive or part of the old padding BUT I know as a contractor I've also seen people use tar paper on old floors before putting in new flooring...not sure why but I believe you have no worries. Keep up the great work and keep the update videos coming!!!!!
I'm in my 70's, and they used to put down tar paper, since it helped keep old time linoleum, which was far less flexable than today's vinyl sheeting, from cracking, because of seams in the wood underneath. They also used layer's of newspaper under the linoleum, for the same purpose, when they didn't want to spend extra money on tar paper, or couldn't afford it. My family went with the newspaper method back in the day.
I dont know what I’ve been watching for the algorithm to suggest this video to me, but I’m glad I watched ❕ You and your folks got so much done. Cant wait to see more❕
I watch all the commercials that Google puts on your video to help your monetization. Occasionally they are interesting, especially movie and tv trailers but it’s supporting you that is important. Your $1 house needs it. 😂❤
To remove the black adhesive from carpet or lineloem I use Goop hand cleaner. It’s safe, just put one with paintbrush let sit for 1 hr. and gently use clean putty scraper to see if it’s softened enough. It can be bought in Walmart etc. I am working on removing backing on my kitchen linoleum so I can sand the original oak flooring. I am the 78 yr. woman in Fla. that’s rehabbing my house. Love your videos. You’re doing great!
Greetings from the great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood, Washington! I heard Mack give your channel a shout out while watching his TH-cam, Midwest Magic Cleaning. I'm so glad he recommended you. This is the first video of yours I have seen and I subscribed right after. What a bundle of energy you are and quite a determined, smart young lady! I LOVE this adventure you are on and look forward to coming along for the ride. Blessings from the Evergreen State! 💛🖤💛
Woohoo! Love this Tia! So wonderful! I can't wait to see the progress. I'm glad you decided to leave the extra bedroom and keep the bath where it was and expand it. I think that is wise. You can also plumb it for a small stackable washer and dryer. Can't wait to see how you do the fridge. FUN!!
Hi Tia! Thanks for sharing this journey renovating your older home. I liked your revised bathroom plans much better than the first. I don’t think you will regret keeping your second bedroom! Take care and God bless! ❤ 😊 The house is really showing its charm after all the things were moved out. I can’t wait to see what you do with it.
Wow, what a difference this made! I am so enjoying your videos and watching the process you are going through with your home. I think you will be happy you decided to keep the second bedroom.
Have water drain away from the house and not stand by the foundation... your basement wall will quit moving inward. A foundation wall is still structurally sound as long as it doesn't move inward more than half it's width (thickness). Again, keep exterior water away from house... will keep basement drier and walls from moving. GOOD LUCK... YOUR DOING GREAT!!!
French drains are always a good idea around the perimeter of the house to drain away moisture from the foundation. Love your change of plans for the floor plan as that's what I was talkin' about! Yay, a large art studio always is fantastic and your bathroom will still be a good size! Perfect! That's just a bit of foam from the underlay stuck on the floor and when you sand it the floors will come right up clean! Gorgeous floors! That's a win!!!! Should have saved that cool screen door for the greenhouse or the henhouse? Oh well, in the dump now! THAT SINK!!! You should have offered to buy that from the owner! It would have looked gorgeous in the kitchen!!! That old dresser would have come in handy for storage and same with that library swivel chair! So many gems!!
Hi there, just had my old cement basement cracks repaired from the inside - do Not use cement or any other cement like filler because it won’t seal the crack. Use this product - Sika Pro Select Cement Fix, Sikaflex® Concrete Fix is a moisture-cured, one-part, non-sag and elastomeric polyurethane sealant. It fixed some water issues, stopped dirt and bugs from entering through the cracks. You can even do it yourself if you want to. I live in an area with gumbo clay soil and this product worked! Some bigger cracks that go all the way thru to the outside must also be fixed on the outside by digging down, filling the crack and applying waterproofing membrane. Hope this helps.
Wow… very impressive! So glad you had help…that was a lot of stuff! The first comment was a good one… sounds like he has done a lot of work on old homes….hope you listen to his advise! Good luck….stay rested…cause your gonna need a lot of energy to complete the job…your young and I feel sure you will do what you set out to do! See you next week! 😊
Wow, you are one hard working young lady 💪! I'm sure your parents are very proud of you! Youre getting a lot of really good advice on how to proceed with your renovation! Bill is very impressive with his knowledge!. Looking forward to the next video update! Hang in there, so happy for you! 😊❤
Love to see this progress, watching from Belgium, can't believe about this Dumpside, here we have only recycling centers, and a part is free, but Furniture and wood we pay by weight see you next Sunday 😊
I am so glad you got 3 quotes from other electricians and picked one you like. BUT any electrician can't just say they are going to PUT IN electricity. YOU HAVE TO TAKE OUT ALL THE OLD ELECTRIC LINES FIRST AND THE OLD POWER BOXES. In order to take all of that out you first have to tear down the wall to get to all the old electric lines. DEMO FIRST THEN PUT NEW THINGS IN. Then the electrician you hired can start to put in all new electric Power boxes and electric lines, new socket outlets, new light switches, etc....This will not all happen in just 1 week!
I think she stated in her first video that the house doesn't have any electric or a boiler, that's why she got it for $1. Like, it's never had wiring in it at all, so there's nothing to take out.
@@ilovethelittlepiggy she also showed some lights on in the house that she said were being powered by an extension cord from another house nearby. So the house has to have some kind of wiring!
@@ilovethelittlepiggy that house has knob and tube wiring - you could see it in several places. The house has to be completely rewired. Knob and tube wiring is a fire hazard.
Don’t have to tear down the walls the electricity can be strung through the walls, it would be a waste to tear out all those sturdy walls and spend money to put in drywall.
Oh my gosh! I actually have the Tammy Doll. That car is so cool! Tammy was made after the movie with Doris Day in the movie...Tammy :) My grandpa got the doll for me when I was very young, many many years ago. I wish every young person had spitfire to work as hard as you! Great job. love to watch your process.
The house looked so nice when it was all cleaned out. I think your decision about the bathroom was very good. It will be nice to have two bedrooms. You are a hard worker. Can’t wait to see the kitchen cabinet refinished. I love that cabinet.
When i come across a video like this and seeing a young adult putting in the time and effort to build something. It gives me a little more hope that our world isn't totally on fire. Good for you young lady and i hope it all works out!
Those hardwood floors will look amazing sanded. I'm in for the long haul on this one, I can't wait to see each weeks progress. It looks like a perfect starter home for you!
I love the layout of this house! So many cool items. Also I would say keep that old woodstove as backup heat. When you need it in South Dakota you will appreciate it!
Great progress!!😮 Those guys worked well together, only few stops to look at items. 😂 Noticed few pink sticky notes on floor. Good idea for green house from windows since such a short growing season. Might use old stove in basement to heat greenhouse too!
This house is going to be nice. It is a jewel in the making. Your family and the former owners seem to be helpful. Wow, all those antique things. I hope someone will make a profit with these things. They may be collectables and worth some money. I like your plan for the bathroom and 2nd bedroom. It will be nice.

Those stairs gave me nightmare material

Most dumps have fees for dumping. We do have scrap metal dealers that buy scrap metal and recycling centers for other things.
Thank you for letting us follow along as you rebuild your home. Seeing it cleaned out is great. Be careful.💖
Great idea to keep the spare bedroom!!
Woohoo! Love this Tia! So wonderful! I can't wait to see the progress. I'm glad you decided to leave the extra bedroom and keep the bath where it was and expand it. I think that is wise. You can also plumb it for a small stackable washer and dryer. Can't wait to see how you do the fridge. FUN!!
I’m really enjoying these videos. So fun to watch. Can’t wait for the next one!
So excited for you, can’t wait to see what you do to the house. Good luck.
OMG! You GO girl! Proud of you!
Now the house has more light and looks much more spacious! Good luck with everything again! 💗💪
You are one hard working lady, great job Tia!! 💪💪
Thanks for info! Working on roof next week!
Amazing progress! Your new bathroom plan sounds great, much better to have a spare room 🙂
Wow just decluttering the rooms made such a big difference. The potential is huge!!!!!
I am so glad I found your channel 😊 this is very interesting.
Oh my gosh please can we get more than one video a week. This is amazing to watch!
Smooth sailing so far! Thanks for taking us along on your journey.
Making progress. Really like your new idea about the bathroom /spare bedroom. Really hope you build a greenhouse with those old windows & doors.
Wow, you are one hard working young lady 💪! I'm sure your parents are very proud of you! Youre getting a lot of really good advice on how to proceed with your renovation! Bill is very impressive with his knowledge!. Looking forward to the next video update! Hang in there, so happy for you! 😊❤
Tia, don’t forget to ask contractors if there is something you could do to help lower the cost.
What a nice young lady, bless you on your new home, its fantastic. If you get a new bathtub make sure it has jets and heat youll love it. Jacuzzi
I am so enjoying your progress! Waiting another week to see more will feel like forever.
Love to see this progress, watching from Belgium, can't believe about this Dumpside, here we have only recycling centers, and a part is free, but Furniture and wood we pay by weight see you next Sunday 😊
Oh My Goodness!!!! I had that wallpaper in the kitchen , the 70's. Good job!!
@julien2912 hmm, good point. I don't know anything about electricity, so I'll take your word for it. 👍🏻
Don’t have to tear down the walls the electricity can be strung through the walls, it would be a waste to tear out all those sturdy walls and spend money to put in drywall.
The flow of the house sure changes without all that rare and interesting distraction of clutter.
Tia, remember to inquire with contractors about potential ways you may help reduce the cost.
…and never pay a contract agreement in full. If possible 1/3 once you see workers actually working and 2/3 upon completion. (It varies).
I was hooked from the beginning! You are doing such a great job...cant wait for your journey to unfold. So excited for you😊
Wow! It is so great to see an old home be reclaimed and loved! I can't wait to see it at the end! ❤
Great progress!!😮 Those guys worked well together, only few stops to look at items. 😂 Noticed few pink sticky notes on floor. Good idea for green house from windows since such a short growing season. Might use old stove in basement to heat greenhouse too!
Thank you for the great content!
