Thanks for doing this, Chris. Imo Brandon is the best singer to come out of the 90s. I have a theory that Brandon is actually one of Vessels biggest influences. His lyrics and style just remind me of a Zoomer and sad version of Brandon. Not to mention the name of Vessels old band is an Incubus lyric lol I don't want to say it here to help Vessels anonymity but I need someone else's opinion on this lol
Brandon is the GOAT! IMHO, Antigravity has got to be one of the greatest melodic hard rock vocal tracks of all time - would be awesome to see you unpack that tune
I saw them on first US Tour when relatively unknown and was instantly hooked...show opened then pin light on Brandon playing hand drums with dreads....amazing
Every time I look for incubus I realise there are not many reactions , and I feel this band and singer are so underrated …. I love them ! They are so good and nice to listen to , every song is different , aqueous transmission gets me every single time , cause is simply gorgeous !
Brandon’s voice is the closest I’ve ever heard to a singer’s voice functioning as an actual instrument. When he harmonizes, it doesn’t even sound like a voice. Just wonderful sound that interplays with the instruments.
His precision and agility with those runs hitting every little note pitch perfect every time cannot be overstated takes a lot of talent. Also props to Mike, who’s beautiful high harmonies really drove their unique sound, also an incredible singer in his own right and an absolute master creating musical soundscapes with his composition.
I've been waiting for Brandon to pop up here for so long! There's a live studio video of "If Not Now, When?" that you should absolutely check out as well with his full range on display.
Honestly this guy has a really gloriously open and emotional voice that is so attractive and yet deeply strong. Chills . I have a feeling it is the passionate poetry of this band.
Brandon has been my favorite singer literally my entire life. His lyrics and voice just have always hit me so hard. But I can't sing so I try to learn all the Incubus I can on every other instrument I can lol.
It's hard for me who has heard MORNING VIEW 1000x and seen them live in concert to accept this XXIII version. SMH. But Live Brandon Boyd is amazing. How he holds the mic is mesmerizing and stretches his vocals makes me happy!
Brandon is one of the vocalists in a band who are not being so recognized with their great voices which are also evident when they're singing live. I went to see the band's concert this year and man, he still sounds amazing.
Saw them in 2018 & can confirm, he still sounds just as good, if not better, than he ever has. It's a testament to the care he takes of his vocal chords, and he'll be the first to tell you that's the reason for his voice's longevity
I’m so glad you finally featured Brandon Boyd. He was/is such an influence on me and I sang along with those albums so many times to nail his tone and enunciation. He really was a breath of fresh air in the midst of post-grunge and nu-metal.
It's been awhile since I've heard ANYONE discuss Incubus and Brandon. They're one of the bands that led me to fall in love with rock and metal and it's a trip to listen to their discography here
Brandon is an awesome vocalist. The album that really got me into Incubus was probably Light Grenades I remember hearing the song Anna Molly on the radio everywhere in the 2000's!
I find always interessting that especially when he raps or has more spoken lines, he sounds pretty similar to Anthony Kiedis from RHCP. Like both voices.
Love your deep dive analysis. Its interesting and funny at the same time when you try to sing like Brandon. Please do more Incubus and Brandon Boyd! New subscriber here.
I just revisited Morning View today after not having heard it in quite some time. When "Just a Phase" came to an end, you came to mind and I went searching to see if you had done any Brandon Boyd videos. I'd love to see an analysis on that song one day if you're up for it. There's so much to unpack there in terms of tonality and dynamics. It's such a great example of a vocalist masterfully building suspense for the listener with a cathartic release/payoff at the end. There's definitely some Cornell'isms in there too.
Also the 90s were such a great time to be alive as a teen😂 learning guitar in 1992 I already had my mom and aunts sharing classic rock with me so I was learning thunderstruck and the black crows and gnr , then I had the early 90s to also learn. But the feeling of driving around and hearing a new song on the radio like The Toadies Possum Kingdom and getting home to immediately pick up my guitar and try to learn it😊 every other day there was another new song to learn. I can't find the words to describe that feeling of excitement we had being exposed to all that great music coming at us. I haven't had that excitement for new music since but I think I'll be stuck with it till the day I die❤
Finally! So glad you analyzed him, Incubus are one of my favourite bands EVER (till Morning View, at least) and my vocal timbre has some similarities with Boyd's.
Seen Incubus countless times, last time I saw them was back when they were touring with Linkin Park. RIP Brandon's voice started dipping after that point and had already peaked. Still one of my favorite bands of all time though.
I always wondered what happened to his voice after If Not Now, When? It made me so sad when I listened live how he struggled to hit those high notes :(
I think he got laryngitis at some point but kept doing shows and it took a toll. And then he got with a vocal coach and had his nose repaired (deviated septum)
Kaneko Ayano's Shukujitsu is a great song to analyze, It'd be amazing seeing you react to her voice. And you'd probably be the first Big vocal coach channel to analyze her vocals.
Great video. Brandon is just amazing. When you said 'let's figure out what makes them tick', I was wondering if you have a video on Ian Kenny from Karnivool. (Sorry, quite new as a viewer, so I haven't checked it all yet) He's in my top 5, so I'd be really interested in breaking his singing down.
Hi Chris. You 're videos have been inspiring me to be intentional with my voice for years and Brandon Boyd is definitely in my top 5 singers of all time, thank you so much for this great video! I've noticed Brandon open his mouth extremely wide. Do you think that's to create an effect or a result of simply being relaxed and letting the sound project more? P.S. Incubus are releasing a newly recorded 'reimaging' on Morning View. I can't wait to hear Aqeuous Transmission!
I'd love to hear you analyze Masato David Hayakawa from coldrain who is really vocally influenced by Brandon Boyd and Chester Bennington! Their song Mayday would be a great place to start from: Studio: th-cam.com/video/PzaW0E7uRwc/w-d-xo.html Live: th-cam.com/video/zWIY7V7-Ou0/w-d-xo.html
I'm not sure I understood your explanation of the vowel slant on the high note? It would actually be more difficult to sing a more open vowel at a higher pitch, so it definitely isn't *because* of ease of articulation on a high note that he's choosing to open the vowel.
Incubus is one of those bands that should have been bigger because they were so talented and honestly When the original bass player Ieft 2002 i wanna say the band has not been the same and their music changed

I'm ALWAYS here for Brandon Boyd! Incubus is home for me.

This song is so iconic to ppl that grew up in the 90s. Its impossible not to bob your head.
Remember moving bar tables in a dive bar in Columbus OH to watch these guys after a show at the Newport music hall good times miss those days
Assertive and confident vocals.
I find always interessting that especially when he raps or has more spoken lines, he sounds pretty similar to Anthony Kiedis from RHCP. Like both voices.

Wow he is so good 🔥
Finally! So glad you analyzed him, Incubus are one of my favourite bands EVER (till Morning View, at least) and my vocal timbre has some similarities with Boyd's.
Listening to Incubus earlier today, this is a godsend
Reacts to Gabriel Henrique and Iza Vitória singing "Run to you" on Shadow Brasil. Flawless and exciting duet!
We had the same backpack for sure
I’m pretty sure the DJ drops some BVs via the turntables in the chorus. Genius!
Thanks the whole albim is great 😊

This is awesome! You need to check out Alter Bridge (Pawns And Kings) that singer is Cornell (ish)
Could you imagine ren doing a cover of an incubus song? His voice would be so perfect for it 😊💜💜
sure would be!

Chris, an episode on the vocal tecnique of JOE TALBOT from the band IDLES could be interesting.
Ohhhhh you should try my favorite band from this era: 311. Nick Hexums voice is 🤌 8:16AM would be a good one

Brandon Boyd had no singing coaching around this time
Boyd had great range. I'm a bass but I struggle to hit some of the notes he can hit and I certainly can't hit his highs.
Morning View Sessions. This whole performance is incredible. Great pick!
Please analize Jann-Gladiator
Hey Chris, can you check out Paolo Nutini?
the commentator and drummer looks similar
Fun fact Brandon has stage fright which his eyes are always closed
