I love your critiques. I just watched your Poets of the Fall analysis before this. If you want to analyze another one of theirs, listen to "The Poet and the Muse". It is from a video game called Alan Wake(great game). In the video game, the band is called "Old Gods of Asgard" which is actually Poets of the Fall who did the music for the game. The lyrics might not make sense as it directly plays a part in the story of the game, however the song is an fantastic example of their talent.
Drive by Incubus is great or Mexico. Incubus, old No Doubt songs, or Evanescence are my favorite voices. Also Lacey from Flyleaf. Again by Flyleaf is a great song to deepdive on.

Incubus was a big part of my childhood in the early 2000s. I finally dug into their whole body of work around when Covid hit- they got me through it all. I’ve now seen them live 5 times: including their 2022 Red Rocks show. I’ve met so many incredible people BECAUSE of them, made friends, and even met them, and they are SO kind. It was so hot in Atlanta, and Brandon gave me his water, while they all lectured my friends on the importance of hydration and happily handed over the rest of their waters😅- they’re amazing, in every way, and they deserve all their flowers.
That level of precision is only gained via a finely honed skillset and a well-maintained instrument. Brandon is so polished live simply because he's committed to being polished live.
As a drummer and incubus fan I cannot agree more with this comment. Jose is a complete machine and uses so many subtle techniques that I think make the music so full but are missed by many pure listeners.
@@corriegillett2536 I’m not a drummer but some of the things he does remind me of Stewart Copeland who’s style also did so much for The Police’s sound. Brilliant little unexpected things thrown in that add so much to the overall songs.
Dig is definitely another one that needs to be looked at. Incubus has long been one of my favorite bands, and Dig is easily one of Brandon's best vocal performances. Additionally the message in the song is VERY good, and one I think you would enjoy as well.
As a fun side note, the "synth sound" you take note of at 20:50 is actually Mike Einziger's guitar tone with some sustain and delay on it. He's known for crafting these very lovely sounds with his amps and pedals. :)

TRUTH It’s wild realizing my idolatry in college (completely sparred due to this song being on the radio a. lot. then) was actually not just a fascination in tonal quality, or body vibe syncing with music, or how beautiful he looks with his eyes closed… or open wide…. Well you see where this goes 😂😂 (Ok, then discovering s.c.i.e.n.c.e shortly thereafter and due to it not leaving my portable player became the soundtrack to a 10 day family vacation in London, so there’s levels)

As somebody who loves to sing and is a **diehard** Incubus fan, I love seeing you analyze Brandon's voice and that you love it so much!! Brandon is my biggest hero, he inspired me to draw and sing again after I quit for years due to bullying. I've seen them live 4 times and have met Brandon twice. He's not just an incredible singer...he's a talented visual artist, and one of the most kind and down to earth people I've ever met!

The Morning View album is full of great Brandon Boyd vocals. Some of my favorites are.. "11am" "Mexico" and "Aqueous Transmission". Please continue with the Incubus reactions!!! They are an incredibly talented band and I don't think they get enough credit for their pure talent and beautiful tones. Though I can say I became a huge super fan was until make yourself. Now that could be timing. Make yourself came out when I was in high school along with marijuana. That 3 album run of science to morning view is hard to beat. Once dirk left the band they lost something. No offense to Ben Kinney. He’s an amazing musician but it just wasn’t the right fit in my opinion. Crow left of the murder was the last album of theirs I bought
Super validating to watch this. I grew up on Incubus and listened to Make Yourself and Morning View literally hundreds of times each if not thousands. And Brandon Boyd of that era is my favorite voice ever.
Totally agree with the "anytime voice" take! His voice is so universal that I find myself listening to them no matter what I feel. It also helps that the other members of the band and their sound have this "universal feel" to them. Also, his live vocal performances sound exactly like the studio albums. His vocal prowess is part of what differentiates them from their contemporaries. It is such a treat to watch them live cause you know you'd be getting your money's worth. They're one of the most underrated bands of their era.

I absolutely love her passion for the craft. Not many people have that fire and maybe a hint of "innocence" in her interpretations. All of Elizabeth's videos have made me feel more deeply about the music I have been listening to for decades.
"Love Hurts" by Incubus is the song that got me into them back in like 2008. It was a free 1080p live video showcased on the Playstation network. His voice was so hauntingly beautiful live that it pulled me in.
Brandon has said in interviews that with each album he just tries to make it more difficult for himself vocally to just allow his voice rise to the challenge. I find one of his best ever vocals to be in the "if not now when" song. I recommend you listening to that one next! And also he’s my every time voice, since I was 3. I have learn so much about singing from him ❤

Preach! Brandon doesn’t have the flashy, fake personality though, total opposite, which wouldn’t go well with trying to market them to the masses. You just see them live and fall in love & I’d imagine they like knowing their fans really are their ride or die ones.
I don't exactly know why, but a lot of my friends convinced me that they were just trashy pop rock, and so it took me a few years to actually listen to them myself and was blown away by their rock sound.
My bets on your favorites are still going to be "just a phase" "the warmth" " Mexico". Please stay with the morning view sessions performances! Live at red rocks was good to but the intimacy, ambiance, and overall performance of morning view sessions was the best

My favorite song of them was Drive. It was easy to play on guitar around the campfire on the beach. I guess incubus was a very popular group with the surfer crowd, at least in Latin America it was. It was catchy and and probably their most popular song at the time.
I’ve been listening to Incubus for years but looked at it differently only after your video. Thank you for making me realise how the whole band is super precise here. It’s not only Brandon but every band member doing lots of small things that contribute to the overall sound. Makes you realise how details is everything!
I think what I love most about this band is they sound a lot like the studio recording but in a lot of ways even better live. Shows they don't need to do a lot of correction post and can actually do it live.
Especially this session. Really intimate, as if they're jamming, but still with the power that they have for their bigger shows. Brandon's really clear here, but still distinct from the studio recording.

While working in a recording studio around 2012 came across a DVD of Incubus. They were traveling to different countries and playing with local musicians from the area. What a truly amazing band, so adaptable and present in each moment. Don't know what it was called, just exceptional music. Big fan of the group at seventy years old.
One of my favourite songs of theirs is called "Just A Phase", quite underrated... It's an incredible showcase of Brandons vocals, and the band as a whole really shines through. There is a Morning View Sessions perfomance as well :)
I remember listening to this album for an entire year. Make Yourself didn't leave my Sony Discman at any point during 2000. Really one of my all-time favorite albums. So many incredible tracks. Pardon Me, Out From Under, Make Yourself, The Warmth, Stellar, Drive...every song feels unique and different. Some days are "Pardon Me" days, other days are "Privilege" days. Feels like there's a song for every mood in that album.
Love Brandon's voice and this is one of my fave songs of his (also love Stellar & Wish You Were Here). I used to have a huge crush on him as a teen, now he's a silver fox lol! He's a talented artist, not just musically, but he draws & paints as well!
Drive is one of my favorite songs by Incubus. I used to use a short little guitar riff from that song as the text alert on my phone back in the day. I also agree that Incubus is a good "anytime" band. Another good "anytime" band for me is A Perfect Circle. Similar in the sense that they aren't too heavy, and have a little bit more of an "easy listening" type vibe.
While FAR from their most popular song/album, the song “If Not Now, When?” is Brandon’s absolute vocal peak. It’s incredible his range, control, and emotion.

I'm always blown away by Brandon just straight killing it live along with the rest of the band ! - It's just unreal. Some of their live recordings are better than than the studio versions of their songs. I have always been a fan - a thrash/surf rock band that creates this level of complexity in almost every song ? That's actual talent.

The tunes that sound like synthesizers are indeed guitar effects! Mike Einziger uses a crazy amount of pedal effects and combines them in inusual ways to create that unique Incubus sound.
Just saw them in concert and they havent lost a step. If you want to hear some great vocals by Brandon I suggest Warning or Drive. Also, Badflower opened for them. Suggest you check them out.
I love "Warning" for the backing vocals (that my brother always made me sing in the car), which is really just the icing on the cake that is this beautifully haunting song.
I'm really happy to see you cover Brandon Boyd. I have always appreciated his lyricism, philosophy, and melodies, even when I grew to realize his technique isn't flawless. They do their own thing, even to this day, and seem to genuinely enjoy making music.
Warning, Anna Molly, Aqueous Transmission, and Certain Shade of Green are all wonderful tracks from these fellas I think you'd like. Also I'd love to see you get into Blue October some time. Weight of the world live would be great for vocal analysis but honestly you can probably go nuts. A lot of their songs are powerfully emotional so just be prepared for that.

I could listen to it every day, yet only be able to critique it regarding how it fit into my life at the time. This is my second-favorite song, after "The Warmth," also in The Morning View Sessions. While the whole album is a gem, maybe check that out? Also, if you like the turntable work here, please, if only in your own time, listen to "Battlestar Scralatchtica." Not a lot of vocals, but worth a listen!
The thing with Incubus is, almost no record sounds like the one before and you would have no problem doing an interesting video on every song. They are just that good!

i've always loved incubus since i first heard them, i was at the age that their first albums fit my life and later when they slightly changed their music it fit with me too. see someone with vast musical knowledge breakdown the nuance of how he signs is fantastic, i just like it cause it all sounds fantastic as a whole
Incubus helped motivate me after my divorce. Power walks with them in my earbuds gave me so much strength. As a teenage lead singer in a garage band, with a mother who was a trained vocalist and taught me what she knew, and true feeling of the soul connection to a beautiful voice, Incubus pumps me every single time I listen to any of their songs.
“Sing like a drummer” is such a cool way to describe it. That makes it sound like it should be bombastic until you think about how many different types of sounds can come from drums. Definitely should be explored.
The synchronized quality of incubus as a whole is quite magical. My anytime voice for sure as well as back to back albums I can play from beginning to end without skipping.
There's an acoustic version of this that's amazing. It's the only song I ever called a radio station to request. Definitely worth a listen offline sometime.
Stephen Christian is the singer for Anberlin, absolutely love his voice and for sure my any time voice. Been a fan of them since college and can't ever get tired of their music. Hope one day you might record a video over one of their songs!
I wonder if you've noticed the unique way Brandon works with the mic. It's not that noticeable throughout most of the song due to the camera angle, but it's very visible in the last chorus. Just watch how he moves the mic to and away from his mouth with each note he sings and the precision of these movements - he knows EXACTLY where to place the mic to best fit each sound and pitch in order to avoid drops and spikes in volume. This is basically manual sound compression, and although many singers do it to an extent depending on a certain microphone type, I've never seen anyone do it with such calculated precision. I very much recommend watching their live performance of the song "Rogues" where Brandon's vocals and mic technique are on full display.
the list of song from Incubus that everyone should listen to can be summarized as "all their songs" I still remember in high school (in 2000) I just got my first MiniDisc player and a friend gave me a "non copied totally legal" version of their album S.C.I.E.N.C.E, that was a really a defining moment for to take this musical rollercoaster. Each album brings another layer of how music can make us feel emotions. I don't know how to sing and I feel ashamed when I do, the only song I learned I sung to someone is Drive which is the song making me feel all the love I have for my wife who helped me be the better version of myself. And also I asked that when I die "Pardon me" should be played when I'm being incinerated
As a guitar player, Ive always loved mike for delivering truly ground breaking guitar tones and techniques, and I always could sort of understand what was going on. But for Brandon I never could capture what technically makes him truly remarkable and youve nailed it with the diction, breath placement, etc. Thanks for this video for one of my fav bands!

That was Mike Einziger creating one of his 'swells', proving he is not just into metal style power chords (chorus) but he takes the role of a keyboardist as well. His playing is as unique as Brandon's singing is. And not to forget the splendid rhythm guys on bass and drums. This song is capturing at once, but also genius when you look at the details. For me criteria of good music regardless of style.

We may not always know why things are special, but we can feel it. Incubus was one of the best live shows I've ever been to. Sounded almost exactly like the album, obviously not a backing track, incredible show, such unique styles of playing and singing.
You’re absolutely right. I saw them in 2001 after morning view came out. That still one of the best shows I’ve been to. But it was the first show from a major band I had been to. It ruined me for a bit. I thought everyone sounded like shit after that. After a few shows I realized imcubus was just the exception

@@corriegillett2536 I’m not a drummer but some of the things he does remind me of Stewart Copeland who’s style also did so much for The Police’s sound. Brilliant little unexpected things thrown in that add so much to the overall songs.
Dig is definitely another one that needs to be looked at. Incubus has long been one of my favorite bands, and Dig is easily one of Brandon's best vocal performances. Additionally the message in the song is VERY good, and one I think you would enjoy as well.
Please do Dig if you’re open to doing a third from them, honestly makes me tear up every time I hear it

Incubus is one of those bands that I can listen to, no matter the mood. The vocals, the musicianship, everything, is just so incredible.
As a fun side note, the "synth sound" you take note of at 20:50 is actually Mike Einziger's guitar tone with some sustain and delay on it. He's known for crafting these very lovely sounds with his amps and pedals. :)

As somebody who loves to sing and is a **diehard** Incubus fan, I love seeing you analyze Brandon's voice and that you love it so much!! Brandon is my biggest hero, he inspired me to draw and sing again after I quit for years due to bullying. I've seen them live 4 times and have met Brandon twice. He's not just an incredible singer...he's a talented visual artist, and one of the most kind and down to earth people I've ever met!

The Morning View album is full of great Brandon Boyd vocals. Some of my favorites are.. "11am" "Mexico" and "Aqueous Transmission". Please continue with the Incubus reactions!!! They are an incredibly talented band and I don't think they get enough credit for their pure talent and beautiful tones. Also their albums, "Make Yourself" and "A Crow Left of the Murder" are just incredible and very different in each. Thank you for everything you do!! I love your videos so much!

Though I can say I became a huge super fan was until make yourself. Now that could be timing. Make yourself came out when I was in high school along with marijuana. That 3 album run of science to morning view is hard to beat. Once dirk left the band they lost something. No offense to Ben Kinney. Super validating to watch this. I grew up on Incubus and listened to Make Yourself and Morning View literally hundreds of times each if not thousands. And Brandon Boyd of that era is my favorite voice ever.
Totally agree with the "anytime voice" take! His voice is so universal that I find myself listening to them no matter what I feel. It also helps that the other members of the band and their sound have this "universal feel" to them. Also, his live vocal performances sound exactly like the studio albums. His vocal prowess is part of what differentiates them from their contemporaries. It is such a treat to watch them live cause you know you'd be getting your money's worth. They're one of the most underrated bands of their era.

"Love Hurts" by Incubus is the song that got me into them back in like 2008. It was a free 1080p live video showcased on the Playstation network. His voice was so hauntingly beautiful live that it pulled me in.
Love hurts is one of my favorites. Though I bought S.C.I.E.N.C.E. When it came out in 1997 and it is still my favorite Incubus album.

Brandon has said in interviews that with each album he just tries to make it more difficult for himself vocally to just allow his voice rise to the challenge. I find one of his best ever vocals to be in the "if not now when" song. I recommend you listening to that one next! And also he’s my every time voice, since I was 3. Preach! Brandon doesn’t have the flashy, fake personality though, total opposite, which wouldn’t go well with trying to market them to the masses. You just see them live and fall in love & I’d imagine they like knowing their fans really are their ride or die ones.
I don't exactly know why, but a lot of my friends convinced me that they were just trashy pop rock, and so it took me a few years to actually listen to them myself and was blown away by their rock sound.

My favorite song of them was Drive. It was easy to play on guitar around the campfire on the beach. I guess incubus was a very popular group with the surfer crowd, at least in Latin America it was. It was catchy and and probably their most popular song at the time.
I’ve been listening to Incubus for years but looked at it differently only after your video. Thank you for making me realise how the whole band is super precise here. It’s not only Brandon but every band member doing lots of small things that contribute to the overall sound. Makes you realise how details is everything!

I think what I love most about this band is they sound a lot like the studio recording but in a lot of ways even better live. Shows they don't need to do a lot of correction post and can actually do it live.
Especially this session. Really intimate, as if they're jamming, but still with the power that they have for their bigger shows. Brandon's really clear here, but still distinct from the studio recording.

While working in a recording studio around 2012 came across a DVD of Incubus. They were traveling to different countries and playing with local musicians from the area. What a truly amazing band, so adaptable and present in each moment. Don't know what it was called, just exceptional music. Big fan of the group at seventy years old.
One of my favourite songs of theirs is called "Just A Phase", quite underrated...
It's an incredible showcase of Brandons vocals, and the band as a whole really shines through.

I remember listening to this album for an entire year. Make Yourself didn't leave my Sony Discman at any point during 2000. Really one of my all-time favorite albums. So many incredible tracks. Pardon Me, Out From Under, Make Yourself, The Warmth, Stellar, Drive...every song feels unique and different. Some days are "Pardon Me" days, other days are "Privilege" days. Feels like there's a song for every mood in that album.

I also agree that Incubus is a good "anytime" band. Another good "anytime" band for me is A Perfect Circle. Similar in the sense that they aren't too heavy, and have a little bit more of an "easy listening" type vibe.

Hundreds of hours of my life have been spent listening to incubus! These guys inspired me to get into playing music in jr high. Brandons lyrics are so underrated, one of the best writers.
I'm always blown away by Brandon just straight killing it live along with the rest of the band ! - It's just unreal. Some of their live recordings are better than than the studio versions of their songs. I have always been a fan - a thrash/surf rock band that creates this level of complexity in almost every song ? That's actual talent.
Incubus and Boyd are still in my top 5 bands for their genre. Morning View and Make Yourself are TIMELESS masterpieces.

The tunes that sound like synthesizers are indeed guitar effects! Mike Einziger uses a crazy amount of pedal effects and combines them in inusual ways to create that unique Incubus sound.
Just saw them in concert and they havent lost a step. If you want to hear some great vocals by Brandon I suggest Warning or Drive. Also, Badflower opened for them. Suggest you check them out.
Saw them this summer too, second time seeing them, was just as good as the first.
I saw some clips of them from this Summer and it sounded like they tuned down some of the more difficult song for Brandon.
I love "Warning" for the backing vocals (that my brother always made me sing in the car), which is really just the icing on the cake that is this beautifully haunting song.

I'm really happy to see you cover Brandon Boyd. I have always appreciated his lyricism, philosophy, and melodies, even when I grew to realize his technique isn't flawless. They do their own thing, even to this day, and seem to genuinely enjoy making music.
Warning, Anna Molly, Aqueous Transmission, and Certain Shade of Green are all wonderful tracks from these fellas I think you'd like.
Also I'd love to see you get into Blue October some time. Weight of the world live would be great for vocal analysis but honestly you can probably go nuts. A lot of their songs are powerfully emotional so just be prepared for that.

I could listen to it every day, yet only be able to critique it regarding how it fit into my life at the time. This is my second-favorite song, after "The Warmth," also in The Morning View Sessions. While the whole album is a gem, maybe check that out? Also, if you like the turntable work here, please, if only in your own time, listen to "Battlestar Scralatchtica." Not a lot of vocals, but worth a listen!

Incubus helped motivate me after my divorce. Power walks with them in my earbuds gave me so much strength. As a teenage lead singer in a garage band, with a mother who was a trained vocalist and taught me what she knew, and true feeling of the soul connection to a beautiful voice, Incubus pumps me every single time I listen to any of their songs.
I've heard people refer to some singers as they "sing like a drummer", which I think totally applies to Brandon.
“Sing like a drummer” is such a cool way to describe it. That makes it sound like it should be bombastic until you think about how many different types of sounds can come from drums. Definitely should be explored.
The synchronized quality of incubus as a whole is quite magical. My anytime voice for sure as well as back to back albums I can play from beginning to end without skipping.

I wonder if you've noticed the unique way Brandon works with the mic. It's not that noticeable throughout most of the song due to the camera angle, but it's very visible in the last chorus. Just watch how he moves the mic to and away from his mouth with each note he sings and the precision of these movements - he knows EXACTLY where to place the mic to best fit each sound and pitch in order to avoid drops and spikes in volume. This is basically manual sound compression, and although many singers do it to an extent depending on a certain microphone type, I've never seen anyone do it with such calculated precision. I very much recommend watching their live performance of the song "Rogues" where Brandon's vocals and mic technique are on full display.

I still remember in high school (in 2000) I just got my first MiniDisc player and a friend gave me a "non copied totally legal" version of their album S.C.I.E.N.C.E, that was a really a defining moment for to take this musical rollercoaster.
Each album brings another layer of how music can make us feel emotions.
I don't know how to sing and I feel ashamed when I do, the only song I learned I sung to someone is Drive which is the song making me feel all the love I have for my wife who helped me be the better version of myself.

As a guitar player, Ive always loved mike for delivering truly ground breaking guitar tones and techniques, and I always could sort of understand what was going on. But for Brandon I never could capture what technically makes him truly remarkable and youve nailed it with the diction, breath placement, etc. Thanks for this video for one of my fav bands!

That was Mike Einziger creating one of his 'swells', proving he is not just into metal style power chords (chorus) but he takes the role of a keyboardist as well. His playing is as unique as Brandon's singing is. And not to forget the splendid rhythm guys on bass and drums. This song is capturing at once, but also genius when you look at the details. For me criteria of good music regardless of style.

We may not always know why things are special, but we can feel it. Incubus was one of the best live shows I've ever been to. Sounded almost exactly like the album, obviously not a backing track, incredible show, such unique styles of playing and singing.
You’re absolutely right. I saw them in 2001 after morning view came out. That still one of the best shows I’ve been to. But it was the first show from a major band I had been to. It ruined me for a bit. I thought everyone sounded like shit after that. After a few shows I realized imcubus was just the exception
Saw them live at SPAC in 2003. One of the greatest shows I've ever seen
