Thank you for making this video. When I first found out I had lipedema I watched a ton of videos about it and of course, like you said, everyone kept saying you cannot lose weight but you can try to maintain. I am also menopausal...this makes weight loss harder, too. But, I watched your video on April 15, 2024. I decided to try low calorie Keto for 12 weeks. I had not been able to lose one ounce, literally! The scale always had me at 199, 201 202... frustrating. I've been eating the healthy low calorie Keto since 4-17-2024 and have lost 6 pounds in six weeks!!! I am going on two ten minute careful stroll type walks each day and I feel wonderful! The cuffs at my ankles are almost invisible! The cellulite covering my knees is disappearing! Thank you, sweet lady, for giving me hope and a simple plan. Plus, I've got nutritional satisfaction and being off carbs has killed my cravings. I know God led me to watch your video. I've been praying He would help me and He used YOU! ❤️

When people raise their eyebrows about how I eat and say it isn't sustainable, I just laugh. They have no idea how good I feel now compared to when I was eating carbs. Just not worth it! The keto eating plan has drastically improved my lipedema. I probably need to give up dairy, but I love cheese so much. I don’t think I would ever give up cheese or eggs unless they caused me a severe issue. My go-to meal is an omelette with cheese and some kind of meat. I have lost about 80 pounds and kept it off for over 5 years. I need to lose more weight, but I am reasonably happy with my current situation. Doctors definitely don’t have all the answers-especially when it comes to weight loss!!! BYW, I used to be borderline for Type 2 diabetes but the ketogenic eating and weight loss thankfully ended this problem. Congratulations on your success with Keto!!!

The lipedema experts are seriously looking at the keto diet for lipedema patients because not only are they losing the lifestyle fat, but the lipedemic fat cells are shrinking. This is amazing news because lipedema patients were told that their legs will always look like that unless they get water-assisted liposuction, and the keto diet is a promising non-invasive option to reduce size.

Agreed, @Jennifer_Lewis_Beach_Living! I really wish it was talked about more. When I went to the FDRS conference in April (www.fatdisorders.org/) there was much more discussion about surgery than on nutrition. Keto has been like magic for me after nothing else worked ❤❤

I’m in tears because you’ve given me hope that I can find a food balance that will work for my body. I’ve recently found a great nutritionist that’s as baffled as I have been about how difficult it is to find a nutritional balance that will work for my body type. Between Lipedema and hypothyroidism I’ve stumbled into weight loss. I suspected food sensitivity or allergies may be part of the answer but haven’t known how to confirm. My PCP and nutritionist are open to learning so I’m optimistic. Knowledge is power with this.

I do keto with lo carb and that works for me. I don’t need sugar because I don’t have a sweet tooth but I do eat some fruits and make my own whip cream. However, diet alone is not the answer. Along with my diet I have a vibration plate, walk, and am jogging laps in pool for one hr. The combination of all this has contoured my body immensely. The scale says little. But I feel fabulous! I’m 67 and when I started to add the pool workout I finally started to lose weight and inches. I think lipedema has a relationship with lymphedema.
I recently discovered that some lymphatic issues can be caused by a parasitic infection of the lymph.
In North America, we don't worry about this much and doctors don't even give it a thought but it may be an avenue someone may want to investigate for themselves, especially if you have been to warmer tropical or subtropical places.
The type of parasite that can cause this is a nematode. Gross, but could be a key for some. You may have to investigate with an online doctor though as most US doctors wouldn't even entertain the idea to try an antiparasitic.

This is a BOMBSHELL!! Ever since puberty I have struggled with packsaddle thighs and large calves. Before I was a rake. Through my 4 pregnancies Mu weight fluctuated. But no matter how much weight I lost (which would easily come off the waist up) my bottom half would always be two sizes bigger. And always the large dimpled outer thighs. Over the years it’s been frustrating to have to buy a larger size pants to fit my bum and thighs only for it to absolutely swim on my waist. As a nearly 55 yr old who is now in menopause this gives me hope.
I’ve lost 20+ kgs over the last year simply going sugar free. I’ve dropped two, nearly 3 sizes. My bottoms size 18 versus 14/16 tops. Sigh! And I always thought I was just a classic PEAR SHAPE. But after watching a few videos the penny has dropped. I even suspect my two daughters in their 20s may have it. They are both size 12-14 but their legs a bigger and fluidy looking. Sorry for the long comment but I am sooo EXCITED to find this info. 🇦🇺

Literally directly goes to my thighs and I can feel it. Super painful thighs even especially during massage or any type of physical palpation. And my mom absolutely has a typical lipedema shape.

I have lipedema. I don't have any real answer for the disease, but i do find regular deep, sometimes painful, but good, massage to the lower back and legs really helps with the heavy painful symptom and gets my mobility back. If your muscle are tight and painful, you do not want to exercise. At now 40, i have managed to maintain lipedema by adding this treatment into my lifestyle along with my exercise patten. Massage isnt a luxury. Its medical for alot of condition, because it can help prevent worse problems starting by draining out the toxins before they do damaged to the muscles. Plus helps breaking up fatty issues. I also know this because i am a spots massage therapist and lipedema woman are some of my patients. They are all better for it. I hope this help alittle.

Impossible to give up dairy and eggs if you're vegetarian! After 30 years of veggie I suddenly started with the swollen feet and ankles, baggy knees, bingo wings and generally saggy. Over several years have blamed fat, cellulite, water retention, muscle loss, you name it. I don't have any pain as such, but the muscle loss has made me very achy all over with really weak legs. I have been keto or low carb for many years (with the occasional cheating phase) and have lost some weight, but it does come back and each time it is more difficult to lose. The last three years I have been doing water fasting - OMAD doesn't do much for me as I don't eat much anyway. I find five days of water fasting makes me lose 7lbs. Every time. Have done 7 days a couple of times and lost 10lbs. Now desperately trying to do longer as I really need to lose a couple of stones at least. It's not easy, but once you start it's not as bad as it sounds and I always feel so much better in every way!

Thanks to your you tube. I started investigating my large leg problem. My husband hunted me bout being fat, even though I had lost 32 lbs in two hears. Because of you I found a therapist, the right compression tights. She put me on a good exercise routine and we asked about the Ketogenic diet. I am trying to go GF . I may try to exclude dairy . I have studied carnivore but I only lasted 2months . I found I feel better with raw vegetables and a few fruits like berries. With help I think I can maintain my lipedema and maybe even loose more weight overall.

I think I am probably a more difficult case. At my worst I was 316. I have lost 86 lbs. It took over a yr, but I am 70, slow due to pain in my legs & ft, & quite sedentary. I started with low carb, with poor results. I am also diabetic. I switched to keto & discovered that it takes a Herculean effort to get into ketosis. I literally had to fast for 3 days to get those urine sticks to change color. It was like I was fat for so long my body forgot how to burn my own fat. At least when you test you know if you are are burning fat or not. I learned about myself that I manage to do very well on a very tiny amount of food. No wonder I did badly on so many diets. After a while keto did not work anymore. I switched to carnivore & even though the scale barely moved I can now wear clothes I haven’t worn since 2008. It has helped the fluid problem in my legs tremendously, that has really helped to decrease the pain. I now eat primarily carnivore with a little cucumber or celery as a treat. One day I went a little crazy & mixed half a cup of condensed mushroom soup with my hamburger that I eat all the time. By the next day I had put on 6 lbs. Food intolerances are real. If you eat it you are going to pay. It will take several days of being miserable to get back to normal. I have to watch food additives like a hawk. I think maltodextrin , a food additive is the culprit. I don’t eat deli meat, sausage, hot dogs, any meat with an added ingredient is out for me. I also pretty much stick to one meal a day. They are still thick, lumpy, bumpy, ugly legs but they don’t hurt nearly so bad as before. I still have 100 lbs to lose. When you don ‘t hurt as bad you can be more active, that is coming next. Good luck.

While my thighs remained thick with the hardened fat globules, they did decrease some! As far as embracing Keto, I don’t feel I can do it fully. This is just personal experience but over the last 5 months I’ve been able to lose 14.5 kg (32lbs) after struggling with my weight since my teens, I’m 60. The difference has been that I started seeing an endocrinologist for my Hashimoto’s. She diagnosed insulin resistance and believes I have been over producing insulin for many years possibly since puberty. (2 of my children who are in their 20’s have also been diagnosed with insulin resistance and they were both really athletic kids). I am now taking Metformin and the dietary strategies I’ve previously had no success with are now working. The only thing I’ve really changed is taking bread out of the equation. I think my diet is fairly ketogenic as I am not eating pasta or rice either and I follow an 18:6 IF regime. I don’t know if I will eventually lose or reduce the lipodema fat BUT my legs are less swollen and the lipodema fat is much softer. I am feeling optimistic about my weight for the first time in many years. I have never been formally diagnosed with lipodema, just told by massage therapists that they think I have it, but my daughter has (by the only medical facility in NSW that seems to recognise it.)

    Hi Rebekah,
These lipedema videos started coming through my feed when I was interested in keto. Hadn’t heard of this condition before but, all makes sense now. I look like my grandma and aunts. This came to a great crescendo for me last spring, as I decided I wasn’t going to be fat any more. I’ve lost approximately 40-46 lbs since trying to practice keto. I’m curious as to whether you had the fat pillows hanging on the insides of your knees. My upper body is smaller but, the fat pillows are still there and I hate them with a passion. I’ve taken your advice with the compression and today ordered the collagen. A doctor I went to has ordered lots of allergy blood tests. Still waiting.I was very thin until menopause and wasn’t seeing the changes until I was diagnosed with other health issues. Hoping for your reply.

Nice that the ketogenic diet works for so many people, but it is not for everyone. I was keto for 10 months and lost a grand total of 12 pounds. This was an average loss of a pound and a few ounces a month (and no, I did not cheat). About halfway into the diet, I noticed I was losing a lot of hair, but did a good job ignoring it. It wasn't until my hair stylist washed my hair and was aghast at how much of my hair was in the sink that I was forced to face reality. She recommended I see a doctor. When I got home, I immediately went online to see if there was a connection between being on the keto diet and hair loss. Bam! I immediately pulled up an article that said while rare, hair loss does happen to some people on the keto diet. Since I have been blessed with better than average hair, I decided to jettison the keto diet and just eat "everything in moderation" as St. Paul advised. Did I gain the 12 pounds back? Oh yeah. But my hair stopped falling out and is thick and glossy once again. In my case, I suspect it has something to do with potassium levels which are high in bananas and potatoes but are forbidden on the keto diet.
I am just grateful I was slender while I was young. Entering menopause was like pulling a rip cord on an inflatable. It is what it is.

Every method of weight loss causes hair loss. My Dr has told me the only way to control Lipedema is to stay on a keto diet for the remainder of my life and that the "eating in moderation" is just going to cause the fat to accumulate more and more.
You may want to find another Dr for a second opinion.

Hi @phoebeintheforst! Thanks for sharing this. I apologize it took me a few weeks to get back to you. I've always been a heavy hair shedder, but I can't say keto has made it worse. What you are saying can definitely happen, though. Did you know avocados actually have more potassium than bananas? I had a similar concern but just added guacamole to my diet (far from a hardship!). I also use electrolytes that a little bit of potassium (amzn.to/44iQBYK). You do have to be careful about supplementing potassium, though, as others note. You can get too much, which is one reason it isn't usually in multivitamins. Have you ever used collagen? I started taking it a few years ago to see if it would help my skin and was thrilled to see hair actually growing back. Whatever you've decided to do, I hope you are feeling good ♥♥

@@corascott5874 I'm really late, but I just wanted to chime in and say I agree. Any stress to the body (mental or physical) could cause hair loss, and apparently it usually happens about 2-3 months afterwards. I've quit sugar and carbs completely twice now, and I would definitely say the sugar withdrawal is a bit of a shock for the body. I think it's important to remember that the body will focus on healing first, and that this might result in hair getting neglected for a while. In most cases I know of, at least from people on the carnivore diet (which is a little more extreme than keto), it begins to grow back in fairly quickly.

try organ meats, oysters and sardines if you want to try keto again. I had the worst hair loss of my life until I added in liver and started some desiccated beef spleen supplements…then I had the most gorgeous hair of my life, since I was a child. I've had hair loss starting in high school when I did the low fat diet. my hair was so great…until I started having more sugars and starch again, so I think I'm needed to go back to a very low carb diet again. it's been just a learn as I go thing.

I worried about nutrition too. I did keto, but it seemed to stop working then went to carnivore with an occasional veggie as a treat. I have been on it a yr & a half. Have had all my labs done twice they are the best they have ever been. All my other health issues have improved tremendously. I have not noticed any kind of issues related to eating this way except boredom. It is not easy, but once you purge the sugar & carbs that turn to sugar out of your system you will feel a lot better. I would go wks 4-6 wks at a time with no wt loss at all & then lose like 6-8 lbs in a wk. It was like my body was refusing to give up the fat. Don’t give up, just try tweaking things a little to see what works with yours. For me sugar & grains are a absolute no.

I have a question... since losing weight on my legs I have been getting pain in my legs. Before I knew I suffered from L I also had pain and swollen legs, but now that I am on low carb diet and wear compression leggings and my legs are shrinking very slowly.... I am getting different pains.... for example my knee (which was damaged before) is now getting really painful. It almost feels like the fat and fluid around it, is no longer holding it up and now that it is "free" it cant support itself. So now I have to wear a support bandage for that knee (now and again)
I also have pain in my heel and foot area... just so strange.
I also wanted to ask you guys... do you have parts of your leg that are numb? I have a part on my bad leg (lipedema is worse on my left leg) that is knobbly and numb.
Since I have been on my diet change, I have also been messaging this part (as well as the rest of my body) and I have been going over it with a vibrating massage device. This seems to have broken up the knobbly bits quite a bit, but the numbness remains. But since loosing the "good" fat, I can really feel the knobbly bits along the outside of my lower leg and how numb it is. Has anyone experienced something like this?
    Thanks for reading and responding!

But each time I would get excited and then bam over night the weight suddenly reappears. I continue to stay mostly carnivore because I feel better eating that way. I recently tried higher fat that too initially seemed to work down 9 lbs then over night the weight comes back.

    • @sturdywoman

@@coryandlindsaysommise7008 This is such a good question! I have to admit when I saw I was sensitive to dairy I had a little melt down because it was such a big part of my keto - heavy cream, cheese, yogurt, butter, the good stuff. I replaced the cream in my coffee with almond milk (I like Malk) and started making my own coconut yogurt. Yep, you read the right. It's really easy! I should make a video about how to make yogurt. I swapped my cheese crisps for pork rinds which are great with guacamole. I generally enjoy a lot of meat and low carb veggies like broccoli or asparagus. I blogged about my non-dairy transition last year if you are curious to read more: sturdywoman.blog/category/food/ There are also a lot of great recipes on Diet Doctor that can be made without dairy so check them out if you haven't. Hi 👋🏼 I am down from a size 22 to a size 14/16 pants and 3x tops to 2x tops. My fat is lingering in my lymphatic system, but it’s moving. I have noticed over the past three years going from 265 to 238 in weight. No sugar, no wheat, no soy, I listen to a lot of information, no doctor has helped me with this issue as they are clueless about diet, recommended a lap band only to get rejected because I never overate…its all about insulin resistance, I was diagnosed with that at least.

@@sturdywoman Thanks so much! That is really interesting. I am blood type A, and, according to the blood type diet, am not supposed to eat meat as it will cause inflammation. Indeed, whenever I have gone keto based around meat I swell. Hence my question to you, because I was keen to find out if you were in fact NOT type O but that the keto-meat diet was still working for you, which would have debunked blood type diet. Hmmm, maybe the blood type diet has some validity.

Hi Maddy! Isn't it exciting to finally know what's been going on for years?? Sorry to hear you didn't feel well on keto. Can you say more about how you felt sick? There's something called "keto flu" that can make you feel weak and achy (like the flu) and more salt or foods like broth are usually enough to perk you up. This video might be helpful: th-cam.com/video/gQIwtXN64cc/w-d-xo.html We are all bio-individual, though, so if Paleo makes you feel good, don't fight it! 😄

I was sitting at my desk in my home office and could barely lift my head to the point my husband had to help me to bed. It was just awful. The best I felt on any diet was Paleo. And I was reading about "starving lipedma" and it also mentioned staying away from milk. I have some food allergies, but I think I was eating more saturated fats than unsaturated. Paleo kind of is based ONLY on whole, unprocessed foods, so when I did that and low carb combined, I felt so brain and body healthy. I also starting seeing some water retention ease.

I did keto during covid with good results but because I'm not overweight I become really bones on the top. And had a hard time sleeping. I am trying again but wanted to ask if I can eat more non starchy vegetables. I know it should be under 20 carbs but without vegetables I don't feel good. Also I'm a vegetarian so for religious reasons I obstain from meat fish and eggs. So this diet can be a challenge but I know it works. Are you strict with counting vegetable carbs?

Hi @lipedemalisa! Thanks for watching. Your doctor can certainly help do allergy testing (and likely your insurance would pay for it) but the one I used was an at-home test ( amzn.to/3OfV5u2 ). I took it near the beginning of COVID and it was worth the cost to not have to leave the house and be weighed/shamed at the doctor. Keep in mind, though, it isn't as accurate as what your doctor would do and should be seen more as suggestions or clues. I took the information and tested out the results with elimination diets. Try to commit to at least a month to fully heal your body and see if taking out a certain food helps - a few days or a week isn't enough. Also how many grams of carbs is considered ok? I’ve tried to do 20-25 and it feels impossible. The Lipedema foundation has referred to I think they call it kind Keto which I suspect means more carbs are allowed. And finally my doctor recommended a low glycemic diet which for instance allows beans. High fiber, protein and it doesn’t spike blood sugar. Thoughts?

    • @sturdywoman
      @sturdywoman  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi @dianetapscott8556! I'm not a nutritionist or doctor, but try to stick to 20g total carbs. Granted, I don't actually count because it makes me feel like I'm "on a diet" but generally I just avoid anything with more than 5-6g carbs. Testing your ketones and blood sugar can also help you know how foods are affecting your body. The best way of eating is one that you can stick to and feel satisfied about. If strict keto makes you miserable, don't punish yourself. I definitely worked up to where I am today. For example, I don't drink diet sodas or use artificial sweeteners now, but they helped me a lot in the beginning. The longer the walk the path the easier it gets. You might try the low glycemic diet your doctor is recommending then gradually move in a more ketogenic direction over time. One step at a time. You got this! I have the same problem the first time I lost weight in my 20s. I dropped over 100 pounds the "conventional" way with extreme diet and exercise but my legs stayed pretty unchanged. It has been a different story on keto because my body has been able to heal. The very first video I posted here has pictures of how my legs have changed (th-cam.com/video/ZWD2L6Tu76U/w-d-xo.html) with this lifestyle. I hear you on the size difference though! Even with my recent weight loss I am 4-6 sizes bigger in my jeans than in my shirts. If you find your size changing throughout the day, you might consider trying compression. I have another video about the leggings I love (th-cam.com/video/-86yGekdTOE/w-d-xo.html). I wear them everyday under my jeans and they are a game changer. I was never over 140 (I'm 5'6"), but my legs were always swollen, especially my lower legs. From my first diagnosis, which was lymphedema, I got my legs wrapped with athletic bandages for a number of days, then started wearing 30-40 knee high compression stockings. I also went through a period of wearing waist high compression stockings. They help!! I got a pneumatic pumping maching through my healthcare (Medicare and BC/BS). Yes, I'm lucky to have the coverage, and everyone should have it! But I also had the support of a team of women who were trained in lipodema and had a salesman for the device company who knew what he needed to present in order to get the insurance company to go with it. It really helped. It meant lying on my back an hour a day, but I like to read. I still wear compression stockings, knee highs. But what I think made the biggest difference was riding my bike for exercise 6-12 miles 3-4 x a week. I also went on an intermittent fasting 16:8 diet and I eat a plant based diet. I am down to 112. I don't recommend this to anyone, it's just the story of how I changed my body and in the process, am managing my lipodema. YMMV. In spite of having a light, strong body with legs and butt in proportion to my top, I still have lipodema and have recently had a case of cellulitis from A MOSQUITO BITE!! So, it never goes away, and you have to do fairly dramatic things to make a difference. I remember reading literature that said that diet and exercise don't help. My experience says otherwise. Best of luck to all my sisters in the struggle.

    • @sarcasticcat4982
      @sarcasticcat4982 หลายเดือนก่อน

One you can do is to cut out all foods that you are suspecting that you are allergic to for ten days.
So for ten days, no dairy, fish eggs, wheat, or grains etc.....
After ten days reintroduce ONE food. If your heart rate increases, you have an upset stomach or any kind of allergic reaction there's your answer. Inflammation raises your heart rate and also can cause a small fever.
A lot of people have combination allergies too. Dairy may be okay. But combined with wheat might cause and action.
I have issue with tomatoes. I also don't seem to like kale or broccoli. Just the way it is.

These tests are a little controversial but I thought it was good enough to give me a place to start with an elimination diet. It was also during COVID and people weren't going out much, even to doctors. One plus if you are in the US, you can pay for these at-home tests with Flexible Spending Account (FSA) funds. Please work with your doctor or a nutritionist to start untangling what does and doesn't work for you. Here are some books you might find helpful amzn.to/3NTseuj or amzn.to/3JWlXNl You will find there is a lot of contradictory information out there and that's because no two bodies are the same. I was just wondering Rebekah... Would taking plant statin vitamins help with cholesterol? 🤔 also if your at stage 2 can you reduce it to stage 1?..💋 I know that currently no cure other than healthy eating habits and movements etc.. I know that in alot cases the condition never progresses to the next stage as long as you continue to maintain lifestyle changes and in take years to progress. I really value your opinion and to me your endurance and willpower are such inspiration for me x

Hi Kam! Good questions as always. I've never taken anything specifically for cholesterol so I can't speak to plant statin vitamins. When I was diagnosed my doctor didn't put me in a stage but I would estimate I was stage 2 or 3 and it was definitely what caused my lymphedema so... advancing. I haven't been re-evaluated and placed in a stage since my weight loss, but if you look at the pictures of my legs at the end of my first video (th-cam.com/video/ZWD2L6Tu76U/w-d-xo.html) you'll see noticeable changes in the lipedema on my legs, including some reduction in the fat pad. So probably? Hopefully, someone is going the research now - ha!

@@sturdywoman your progress, willpower and endurance are incredible and I know you have to be consist xx.. I do have my up and down moments and sadly after my compression is taken off I don't like my legs but I know that I have to be kind to myself... I will let you know in few months when I go back to clinic for review.. I have also purchased leg pheumatic massage from Amazon, only £60..I am invested in myself. X have a good weekend 😊 💋

So, is there EVER a time you eat sugar? If so, is there a plan or system for when you chose to eat sugar? From a person who can't deal with the idea of never having chocolate cake again.
