Get A Life Podcast Ep. 96 Homophobia in the PBCC

This a powerful and honest podcast of what it is like if you are born gay in the PBCC. Craig, Ben, Fritz & Paul, Stephane, Ross, Jacky, Gilli, and Abi navigate a taboo subject that is dealt with in very extreme measures in the PBCC. We know the PBCC is very archaic in their understanding of being born gay, but what will it take for them to realize this problem they have is not going away? The team went through Fritz's t-shirt he wore to a pride march that had multiple slogans written on it. Everything that was written on it was said to him by the PBCC. Ben goes through his Instagram posts that had graphic homophobic comments from Steve Hales' grandson and gives a brief update on his death threat he received.
The breakthrough they all had after leaving was finding the support, love, and acceptance they never got inside. Breaking free from the narratives, brainwashed into them, was found during meet ups, LGBTQ group activities, and realizing how twisted the PBCC use the bible scriptures. Most of all, THEY ALL want to help those stuck inside that are in the same position they were in.

This is the main reason I started listening to your podcast, because I suddenly realised there must be a bunch of LBGTQ+ kids who live in my town, who are living within the Brethren, unable to be their true selves. Your work is helping me understand the group so much more. I had no idea just how strict they were.

I was read out of fellowship by the Brethren when I divorced and came out. I have been with my husband for 30 years. I can remember lying on the floor prostrate asking god/jesus to take away the sin of being homosexual which I truly knew I was. I was promised by all the elders of the assembly that god would change everything but god did not-then I was blamed for not being christian enough, spiritual enough. So I became a Minister in the United Church of Canada as they were the first Affirming Church in Canada. I am now a psychotherapist and specialize in psycho-spiritual helping people affected by the horrible reality and legacy of christian doctrine on the human condition.

Good to listen to this.
It probably was not one of the things I sorted through early on after leaving but certainly as I have lived since leaving I certainly have gay family and friends and now I am learning about non binary and trying to remember to use their preferred pronoun.
I guess I was fairly ignorant while in although I did have more sex Ed than most.
Still I left over 50 years ago and the wider community weren’t very accepting either.
I do find it hard to relationise that God would make mistakes. I still have to keep learning and also be open to admit I might have been wrong.
I am horrified at Craig’s story of the drugs he was put on which was the same drug my late husband was on for treatment of prostate cancer.
Congratulations guys for bringing this story out.
The sin to me here seems to be judging others and treating people so badly.
Really they are very ignorant in the fact they aren’t game to be curious as they just play “Follow the Leader”
Not all of us “oldies” are judgy.
I still cannot understand a mother turning her back on her kids.
