Hi Rob, great videos! I have been watching your videos and a few orhers for a while. I finally got the courage to start my youtube channel/ videos over a week now. I wanted to do this 10+ years ago. I was putting it off until now. I just wanted to drop a "hello and keep up the wonderful work!"

I've been hot and cold with TH-cam but it has always been something I've dreamed of making more consistent. This fall is my time to get down to it! Great job with building your channel and I've subscribed!
Oh my gosh Peanut just wants your attention ☺️. She is so beautiful. Thank you for so much awesome information, it really helps more than you can imagine. I can't help but click on each new video you put out, great job!
the sound on the mic is smooth . thank you for sharing . . I too just started my channel . but I still have not found my niche . I learned to sublimate mugs and make beautiful crafts , however I am stuck with the editing of my videos because im not good in front of the camera . I am going to try just like you . thank you for the encouragement . ! you are amazing !!!
I thought about using a selfie stick but I found using my tripod is better for the times I want to set my tripod down to record stationary. I really like those phone holders.
Thank you Rob! After watching, I realized that I have a tripod with bendable legs (but it's not a joby) that will do the trick. It doesn't have the nifty quadlock. I might end up getting it but I'll try what I have first. Your videos are terrific! Thank you for sharing your how-to's. It really makes me feel not so alone as I learn TH-cam! It's like a teacher in your back pocket. :)
Absolutely use what you have! You may find it works best for you! The only reason I use the Quadlock adapter is because I already had the Quadlock case because I use it to attach my phone to my bike when I go cycling. Best of luck to you! :-)
Hey Rob - thanks for another great video. Does your model of iPhone have any type of image stabilization going on? Asking because the video seems very smooth when you're walking. I assumed you were using one of those Osmo gimball devices to keep things smooth. Or maybe you just walk like a ninja?!
Yes, it's called "Enhanced Stabilization" and I discuss it and show exactly where to enable it towards the end of this video when I go over my iPhone Settings. Turning that on makes a huge difference in stability of the video. No need for any gimbal with that setting :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer Ok, sorry I should have watched to the end of the video and would have been able to answer my own question ;). Looks like image stabilization wasn't available until the iPhone 14. I have an iPhone 12 so I'll have to think about upgrading the phone, or maybe getting an Osmo gimbal for it.
Interesting to hear the difference between the two mikes. I found the DJI to sound more pleasant than your indoor mike. The indoor one is a little bit too sharp for my taste.
I have Quad lock and found it good for my bikes, but when traveling and not having the quad lock connection it prevented me from quickly putting my phone onto other adapters without changing the case. So now I have gone to a Small Rig phone holder which can screw onto any tripod screw, it can also quickly slide into a cold shoe slot on top of camera, and then it also has cold shoe connectors top and bottom of the mount for audio adapters or small lights. Super light, tiny size, and was rather cheap..
@@RobtheMaritimer Not only because it's funny but also encouraging for beginners like me to see most of the time these videos are not recorded at once. "Don't give up, try again, do more..."
Dear Rob, English is not my first language maybe that explains why when I read your name I read "Rob the merry timer" Rob having a merry time. ( i know that maritime means from the water or having to do with the sea, but I am Dutch, so forgive me) Also, thank you for all your informative video's. I enjoy them a lot.
Hi Maaike, I’m originally from Switzerland and I had to look up the ‚maritimer‘ part on Google. 😆 It’s used for the region. Rob is from the Canadian Atlantic Maritime provinces. Greetings to my native Europe, and best wishes 💕
Great recommendations! I'm a Manfrotto fan from my journalism ed days but the Quadlock system looks exceptionally sturdy. Since I'm clumsy, I've used a GoPro on a flexible monopod (similar to the one you use) for my walking/hiking and talking videos. Way cheaper to replace than my iPhone when I inevitably trip or fall. 😂 I've had the Rode Wireless Go mic on my Christmas list on Amazon for a couple years but I will definitely look a little closer at the DJI before making any leaps.
I like Manfrotto too... love my Manfrotto tripod! The Rode Wireless Go is a good choice too, from what I've heard... never used it myself though but I think it's similar to the DJI Mic.Enjoy your shopping! :-)
Thanks for another informative video. Super useful especially since I just bought the DJI for the beach. Your bloopers at the end are SO relatable! 👍🏼😆🤣
Yes they do... the Camera app on the Apple Watch. I've used it and it works great... but not really practical to use once you start walking and talking to the camera. It's best for setting up a shot in a studio to make sure you're in frame before beginning :-)
I'm always in my head about walk and talk. Not like I don't know how, just wondered about others set up. As always over thinking is getting the best of me. 😏 15:39 Your cat is adorable and gives you a look as if to say - Could you pay attention to me and stop fiddling with your gadgets? Lol.
Not necessarily… some have been and some have not been. What I think it shows is that the actual format of your video (walk and talk, talking head in a chair, sitting in your car, etc) doesn’t matter as much as the content within. So I’d say just pick a method that you feel most comfortable with, and make your video that way :)
Thanks Rob - this was extremely helpful, particularly as you showed rather than just said how to do all these things. I think Peanut didn't like all the "dead cat" talk... 🤣
When you turn the phone to rear view how can you tell if you’re in shot of the screen because those lenses are so small? Can you record when looking at you? So that you can see yourself? And when record in your home do you do this differently? I’m not very tech oriented being in my 50’s 😊
Last question first ;) I use a Sony ZV-e10 camera when I record in my office... I have it setup on a tripod and rarely move it... I even have tape on the floor so I know exactly where to put the 3 legs of the tripod when I make a video in my "brown chair". But when I go outside and do a "walk and talk" video, I use my iPhone 14 Pro Max... BUT I don't use the selfie screen... the better camera is the rear facing camera, meaning I can't see myself. That's actually a good thing because then I won't be tempted to look at myseld in the screen, and instead can just look at the lens (so you see me looking at you rather than off in the corner). But like you said, since I can't see myself, how do I know I'm in frame? What I do is I do "practice recordings". I'll walk and talk to the camera as a test... then stop it, turn it around and watch it back. I've done that several times just to make sure I like the lighting (what side is the sun on) and I'm "mostly" in frame. Then I just do the main recording and do the best that I can. Often times I will fall out of frame, but in the end it doesn't really matter... I find people are very forgiving with these types of videos so if the top of my head gets cut off for some of it because my arm got tired and the camera got lower, it's no big deal. AND the more I do it the better I get at it... it really is all about practice. I just think it's super important to try to look at the lens as much as possible, because then I'm having a conversation with whoever is watching :) I hope that helps! Cheers :-)
That's a great video, Rob, I always wondered how people created their videos outside. How do you keep the camera still if you're walking, please? I see people walking and filming themselves, and when I see the video, I see that they really look quite good. Maybe the camera has something to compensate for the up-and-down walking movement. Keep up the great work!
Towards the end of this video I go through the settings in my iPhone... one of those settings is "Enhanced Stabilization" which is a feature included in the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I have that enabled and that keeps the video much more stable than if I didn't have it on. If your phone does not have a feature like that, then you could use a gimbal instead. I hope that helps :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer Thank you for your reply, Rob; it's appreciated. I use an Android phone, but it looks like it has similar settings. The video stabilisation was already turned on, so maybe it's a default setting.
I only started doing these "walk and talks" in the last few weeks so I've never done one in the winter... but I do plan to going forward so you all can see the difference :-)
How often do you use the iphone for walk and talks, and how often do you use the Sony ZV-E10 for walk and talk. Just curious. Great channel. And are you now using the Pocket 3 for a lot of vlogging and walk and talks?
I use my iPhone for all my walk and talk videos... all videos I make outside. I only use my zv-e10 when I'm in my office, doing live streams or making videos in my chair. I do not have the Pocket 3... if I did I might try that outside... but my iPhone seems to do the job :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer Hi Rob, thanks for letting me know. I am currently binge watching through a lot of your videos, as I am in the older demographic now and enjoy your videos. Great advice overall!
You've almost talked me into filming myself for my channel. Maybe if I watch a few more of your videos...? BTW: has anyone told you that you sound (a bit) like a Canadian Jeff Goldblum?
Hi Rob, I am just getting ready to start a TH-cam Channel and I have been experimenting with filming from my iPhone rear facing camera. To check I am in shot, I use my Apple Watch Remote Camera. This shows on the watch what the tripod mounted iPhone is seeing. It also has a record stop/start button. I have yet to find out if there are any downsides to this method.
If you have an Apple Watch then yes, that's a perfectly good way to check your framing too. I use that method if I'm using a tripod... but for "walk and talk" videos I try to do them exactly as I would so I still prefer to turn the phone around and just double check it. But yes, your method is good too... whatever works best for you! :-)
I didn’t get the latest DJI Mic 2 version either… I got the original DJI Mic… it’s $100 cheaper. You could save even more if you just get the 1 TX 1 RX option (only 1 mic instead of 2) and that would save even more… so that would be your most economical choice with DJI :)
If you have your settings the way I do then it's easy to switch back and forth between video and photo modes without having to change all your settings again.
QQQ Hi Again! I love your Quad Lock solution. I'm about to purchase a new iPhone 16, and I've read that the Quad Lock gets in the way of the plastic screen protector. Have you encountered this?
I don't use a screen protector on my phone so I can't say for sure. I do love the case though... it served me for 2 years with the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and I just got another one for the iPhone 16 Pro Max that I recently upgraded to. This time I went with the Magnetic case so it can charge wirelessly through the case... I love it :)
That's unfortunate... I wonder if you contact the company they may help you out? I've had mine for over 2 years and never had a problem with it... all the joints are still very tight...
There was someone recording using their iphone and she is able to check her location in the frame using her apple watch which I thought was a great option for peope who have both an iphone and an apple watch.
Yes that's super handy! Probably best when on a fixed tripod... I've used my Apple Watch in that scenario before and it surely helps. But if I'm outside walking, I've already got my phone/tripod in one hand and sometimes notes in the other... it would be hard to check my watch for framing... but I suppose not impossible :-) Thanks for sharing!
Peanut doesn't like you talking about dead cats 😂 Also fun fact, by the end of this year, every phone tablet and camera sold needs to have a USB-c charger here in the EU.
Haha I think you're right about Peanut ;-) And yes I thought that was the case with USB-C... pretty soon everything will use that connection to charge :-) Thanks for sharing!
It should be under Settings > Camera. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is what I have and it’s there. Is your iOS up to date? I’m not sure why else it would be missing…
Good video, but you have something wrong. What you called an 'iPhone Adapter' is actually called the lightning adapter. If you try to plug that into an iPhone 15 or 16, it will not work, and you may ruin the usb c port on the iPhone, if someone is trying to force it in. The lightning adapter only works with iPhone 14 or earlier. That is something that you should have pointed out in the video. As the years go by, it will be less important as the older phones are replaced with newer phones in peoples hands. Otherwise a pretty good video. and yes, I have a cat too that lights to be by me during online meetings, but the voice isolation in Microsoft Teams does a pretty good job of knocking out her meowing when she wants to sit on the arm of the sofa.
You are correct, thanks for clarifying that :-) The DJI mic comes with 3 adapters... a lightning adapter, a USB-C adapter and a 3.5mm connection for DSLR cameras... so whether you have an older iPhone like my iPhone 14 or a newer one with a USB-C connection, this mic will work :-)
This is your first video since a few weeks that is not recorded outside and if I look at the number of views you get then this video is bumping that number back up again. I know the audio and video is not ideal outside. You have to deal with the elements and that means sometimes harsh light and wind blowing in your microphone. This is not the first time I have seen that people who start to record outside lose momentum. I also like photography and a famous photographer limited the amount of videos he shot outside for this reason. Do you also have the feeling that filming outside will be bad for the amount of views you get? Don't get me wrong, I know channels that almost only film outside that are doing absolutely fantastic, but I think it is more challenging.
I agree with some of what you're saying... yes, it can be challenging recording outside for a number of reasons (lighting, wind, camera stability, distractions, other outside factors). But no, I don't believe that just because I filmed outside that that will be "bad for the number of views I get". Keep in mind that I'm not trying to get "the most views ever" from every video I post anyways. Some topics aren't as trendy and won't get as many views... but it's still important that I address them if it's something my viewers want. I don't call that "losing momentum"... I call it answering questions for my viewers. My goal with my videos is to help people make their own videos and part of that is showing them how to make videos outside... because there are people who want to do that. Also keep in mind that people like variety. If all I ever did was make videos sitting in my chair, that would get old and people would likely want to see something new, something fresh... so I'm trying to offer a variety of different types of videos. The same applies with outside videos... if that's all I ever made, that would get old too. I hope that helps! Thank you for the comments :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer That certainly helps. I understand that you have to make videos that are not always the most "viral" videos. Sometimes it is just because it is important information for some of your viewers but I also see TH-camrs who just make videos because they like to make them. There are even TH-camrs that make a schedule for that. So, e.g. they make a video per week but once a month they pick a topic that is not the most effective with regard to views but is something they really like to make a video about. That makes sense. If I would live where you live, then I can imagine that going outside is not exactly a punishment ;-)
If you have a better or different setup, let me know what you use and what works best for you! Have you made a walk and talk video yet? Did you find it hard? I'd love to hear how you made out :-)
I prefer using an action camera rather than my phone for walking videos, but also with the DJI mics

@@RobtheMaritimer Thank you for your reply, Rob; it's appreciated. I use an Android phone, but it looks like it has similar settings. The video stabilisation was already turned on, so maybe it's a default setting.
I prefer outside, but hate cold weather so this winter could be an issue. I can't imagine how you Canadians do it!
I only started doing these "walk and talks" in the last few weeks so I've never done one in the winter... but I do plan to going forward so you all can see the difference :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer I'm not sure how much snow you get, but I definitely need to see you out their battling the elements!
❤ thank you
My pleasure :)
You've almost talked me into filming myself for my channel. Maybe if I watch a few more of your videos...?
BTW: has anyone told you that you sound (a bit) like a Canadian Jeff Goldblum?
LOL nope... that's a first! :-)
I don't want to spend $349 on a DJI. How about the less expensive version? $249 for the (2TX + 1 RX + charging case)? Opinion?
I didn’t get the latest DJI Mic 2 version either… I got the original DJI Mic… it’s $100 cheaper. You could save even more if you just get the 1 TX 1 RX option (only 1 mic instead of 2) and that would save even more… so that would be your most economical choice with DJI :)

Thanks Rob! 😊
Now if only I could figure out video editing !! GRRRR 😮
I'm curious. Do you have to change all the settings if you need to take a photo?
@@RobtheMaritimer Thanks Rob
Which iPhone model are you using ?
It's the iPhone 14 Pro Max... about 2 years old.
@@RobtheMaritimer thanks!
I think you could use an Apple Watch to see if you are in frame as well.
Yes you can :-)
My joby tripod broke at the joints and now one of the legs doesn't stay on. I would recommend one without the bendy legs.
Peanut doesn't like you talking about dead cats 😂
Also fun fact, by the end of this year, every phone tablet and camera sold needs to have a USB-c charger here in the EU.
Haha I think you're right about Peanut ;-) And yes I thought that was the case with USB-C... pretty soon everything will use that connection to charge :-) Thanks for sharing!
I don’t see the enhance on my iPhone 14 Pro Max
You are correct, thanks for clarifying that :-) The DJI mic comes with 3 adapters... a lightning adapter, a USB-C adapter and a 3.5mm connection for DSLR cameras... so whether you have an older iPhone like my iPhone 14 or a newer one with a USB-C connection, this mic will work :-)
Good tips. You say 'umm' very often, it's better to avoid them. Just trying to help to improve.
I agree! I'm working on it... trying to get better with each video :-)
can we have a sole video on your cat please? 😂
Haha I might just do that ;-)
This is your first video since a few weeks that is not recorded outside and if I look at the number of views you get then this video is bumping that number back up again.
Maybe your thumbnail should be you outside just sayin
Maybe it should lol! Thank you :-)
and dont say DEAD CAT . your kitty is listening . 😆 he might think you may be trying to 🔪 him .☹
Haha!
