One clarification... although I did this "all in one take", I did cut out several parts so that I could make this video shorter but still show everything important. My iPhone was recording the entire time, and that video ended up being 1 hour 20 minutes... so that's how long this "really" took. I hope you're ok that I shortened the final video to 36 minutes by removing some unnecessary stuff ;)
@@JoesKnowledge Honestly, I don't feel like I'm very good at it but I keep trying! It just takes practice... lots of practice. The more I do it the more comfortable I feel doing it. Give it a try! Rob, Great video! One tip to help sync your audio: Once all recording starts, take a few seconds of silence, and clap! The clap will be a distinctive point that will help you match the waveform! Cheers to you and a great channel!!
Great advice! I have done that before, but lately I've just gotten used to doing it how I showed in this video. That said, I was fully planning to "clap" once I turned both cameras on.... but I forgot lol!! Thanks for sharing :-)
I've tried Premiere Pro and don't love it... far more complicated than Camtasia or Davinci... and Davinci Resolve does auto captioning as well. I know Premiere Pro is popular it's just not for me. Whatever works for you though... there's no wrong choice! All the best :)

Have a look at the Gravity stands MS 0200 SET1 boom mic but has a desk mount instead of your traditional tripod at the bottom. this is what I use and based on where your stand is, it'll save you a lot of space and no tripping! great video btw.

4:00 - SQUIRREL!! Thanks for another great video, Rob. I just finished editing my first video today. I want to stack a few ideas before I post it so that my videos can come out regularly. I can't believe you did both videos in 80 minutes. My edit took me over six hours, however, I did get a lot more familiar with my editing software, DaVinci Resolve. Still a lot to learn there to streamline things, but I did build a couple of templates. Incremental progress. Thanks again.
Peanut loves Cat TV! And yes, 80 minutes to record both videos and edit one of them... that was a fairly simple video to edit, as are most of the videos I make. This "Behind the scenes" video though took several hours to edit because I didn't want to leave it at 80 minutes long... so I went through it several times to edit out parts that were unnecessary to get the total length of time down :-) Good luck with your channel and videos!!

Hey Rob! Great Video - You give us older, technology challenged folks, a chance of making it possible!! One thing I love about your Camtasia workflow looks to be the ease of video editing. What's the easiest way of recreating some of your 'Favorite' title presets, and most used more basic add-ins to your work flow?
Thank you! Here's what I do and what I find easiest once I have a title the way I want it and if I want to re-use it across multiple projects: Since I'm using Camtasia on a mac, I'm able to have more than one project open at one time (can't do that on the PC version last time I checked). So what I do is I open a previous project that has the title I want... I highlight and Command-C copy it... then go to my current project and Command-V paste it. Then I modify the title with the new text. I do that with titles, images and even video clips I want to reuse. Camtasia does have a template and library system that you can use to create presets... but I just find this way works best for my workflow. I hope that helps! :-)
Great, clear, and concise explanation of how you shoot and edit your videos. A question for you. I know that Adobe likes to operate on a subscription-based platform. Audition is one of those. Adobe Premier Pro allows you to record directly from an external mic to the software, and it seems to have pretty robust audio controls. Would it make more sense to use one program for everything or is it a personal preference? Another alternative would be Apple's Final Cut Pro. The benefit of that is a one-time software purchase as opposed to a monthly ongoing subscription.
I think it ultimately comes down to personal preference. I've tried Premier Pro and found it difficult to learn. I haven't tried Final Cut Pro but another one I've used is Davinci Resolve... that one I found easier than Premier Pro, and very powerful, but still more difficult than Camtasia, in my opinion. Also, you don't have to use Adobe Audition for recording your audio and editing it... Audacity is a free software app you can use to do pretty much the same thing... I just happen to be more used to Adobe Audition :-) One of these days I may spend some more time with Audacity so that I can finally end my Audition subscription ;-)

I understand the entire process can be daunting so I really tried to simplify it in this video (except for the fact I did 2 camera angles... that's often unnecessary :). @@LifeAsAllen I think I was at around 500 subscribers when I finally did my first live stream... but wish I had started sooner! Live streams can really jump start your "watch hours" and grow them fast. What worked for me was advertising the live streams in the 2 or 3 videos I did leading up to my first live... and I scheduled it for the same day/time each week. Just food for thought... it's a great way to boost your channel's growth, whenever you're ready :-)
This is precisely what I'm looking for. I'm unsure why your video popped into my feed today; however, it did. I'm new to TH-cam videos and mainly experimenting with them while I work on launching another channel at the end of this year. I use a Final Cut Pro for editing and a MacBook Pro. I'm mildly surprised that the only items I need to include on your recommended list are the teleprompter and the lights. I'll be watching a few more of your videos; however, based on what I see here. It's safe to say that I will join your Creator's Cove.
I use the Atem mini for live streaming and love it… but it throttles back to 1080p, and I want to make my videos 4k…. So the Atem mini won’t work for that :)
You are geeking out bad there Rob, haha. It’s good to know all this stuff, but the most important thing is dont let all the tech stuff keep you from hitting record. I have done lots of multicam videos, but i realize the audience really does not care unless im doing a diy video where the different views are showing a totally different view that added to the information im talking about. I usually edit on a powerful pc that i built but i got a MacBook recently and trying to edit on PP on both now. If you are using adobe audition, time to start using PP for video editing, very powerful, i switched 5 years ago. I cant believe you are syncing manually, doesnt camtasia have an auto sync like PP. Doesn’t camtasia have a multicam mode, where you can use choose the camera as it plays, kind of like a tv studio does it. If you are going to use multi camera, you need to use a different program this is way too hard. In PP, you select all your tracks, audio and video, and PP syncs all the track automatically and creates a sequence for each synced track, you just drag in the sequence, everything is synced and ready for multicam edit. Sometimes im syncing 100 files at once, 25 scenes, 3 video tracks with audio, and one audio only track. 4 x 25 100 tracks synced in 30 seconds. Larry
I tend to agree with you... adding a second angle to a talking head video doesn't always add much (or anything) to a video other than breaking up a possibly monotonous story/message/script. If it doesn't add to or help a story, then it's probably unnecessary. It also may take away from the authenticity of a video. I've tried Premier Pro and don't love it... maybe it just wasn't a good time for me. I do like using Davinci Resolve (which is similar in functionality to PP), but I just find Camtasia the easiest... especially for doing screen recording videos where I may want to zoom in and out and pan around... Camtasia is the easiest at doing things like that. There is no "one size fits all" as far as video editing software goes... there is only "the best for you". They can all get the job done... it's a matter of finding your favorite :-) Thanks for commenting! Cheers :-)
Ah Camtasia! I try it every couple of years for the past 8 years in the hope that it will allow the detaching of the audio track so that you can then lip sync correctly is its ALWAYS out of sync. It’s not the computer or the processing power. Top end IMac, + MacBook Pro top end and recently Mac mini silicone. There are comments all over www about it but completely ignored by tech. I am a VERY long term user of Snagit which is a flagship product for sure. One can only hope that one day :-)
In Camtasia, if you right click a video clip that has audio in it you can "separate audio and video" into two separate tracks. You can then make adjustments to re-sync if yours are out of sync. Not sure why you have that problem though as I don't ever seem to have that issue. But I also don't typically use the audio that is captured by the video source... I record my audio separately and sync them anyways :)
@@RobtheMaritimer can you then NUDGE the track left/right to synce up. Even the nudge feature which is essential for editing was un-usable. Still this MAY have been fixed now.
@@Martin_Cole I'm not aware of a "nudge" feature... but you can zoom way in and "click and drag" a clip left or right, 1 frame at a time. Make sure "timeline snapping" is off when you do this as otherwise you'll have trouble "unsnapping" the ends (which will start snapped together). Once you have the video and audio synced properly, then I would trim the beginning and end of both clips so they line up. At that point you can "group" them together if you like :)
Lol good observation! I "pretended" to turn off the camera... that's just a habit I've gotten into. I didn't actually turn off the camera until a few seconds later when I explained when I turned it off :-)
This is GREAT Rob as always! Your presets in Audiate, do they involve cutting out some of the unecessary content e.g. umms etc.? I ask because at 12:58 when you're now lining up the tracks wouldn't the processed file have largely different waveforms because its processed and the audio from the other two camera tracks isn't? Hope that makes sense - thanks for the great content as always!
It was Audition I used, not Audiate... although you can use Audiate to do the exact same thing :) And NO I did not remove any umms, ahhs or any mistakes at all from the audio file... I only "enhanced" it by adding equalizer, compression, etc. Because of exactly what you said... if I had removed anything in the audio file BEFORE syncing it with the video file, then things would've been out of sync. So any mistakes (or anything at all) I want to remove, I wait until the audio is synced with the video and then I remove BOTH audio and video sections at the same time. I hope that helps :-)
Thank you and great question! You certainly can do that... however, when I mak my videos sitting in the brown chair, I like to use my shotgun mic... that's the best mic I have... and it has an XLR connection. XLR will only connect to my computer and not to my camera (or iPhone) unless I buy an expensive piece of equipment. So I've gotten used to just capturing my audio separately and then syncing it with my video in post. HAVING SAID THAT, the new DJI mic I just got WILL connect directly to my camera or my iPhone... but it's still not as good IMO as my shotgun mic. But when I go outside and use the DJI mic, then I can have that plugged directly into my phone and record that way... then no syncing will be required :) I hope that helps! Hi Rob! I’m glad I found your channel. I have a TH-cam channel and sometimes I need to Zoom in on something while I’m recording. Does Camtasia have that feature? I called them, but the woman said you can do that post record. I need to know if the software has the capability to zoom in and out “while” I’m recording. I appreciate your help. 😊
Camtasia will just record your screen... so whatever is on your screen will be recorded. Camtasia itself cannot zoom in on your screen "live"... if you want to do that live then you'd have to zoom your screen using screen zooming software. I remember looking into that a couple years ago but it turned out being more difficult than I wanted it to be. So what I do now is I add the "zoom ins and outs" after the fact... when I'm editing the video I recorded. I hope that helps :-)
No I don't. I've used handbrake in other instances, but lately I don't bother with that step... I might if my internet connection was slower, but no need right now. Handbrake can be very useful :) Good tip!
Hi Rob, very authentic and useful, may I ask with Adobe Audition, once you create a set of enhancements for Audio, you can save presets and actions and just apply same to every new audio file you bring in? thanks, I might add I also prefer Camtasia for editing and even text titling animations are so simple there.
Yes that’s exactly right! I created my “effects stack” about 3 years ago and I still use it because I love the sound. So just 1 click in the favourites tab applies all effects :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes I'll be covering that in a future live stream... but I can describe it now: Add a black rectangle shape and completely cover your video with it for the 3-4 seconds you want your title to display. Then reduce the opacity to 70% (so it's slightly see-through). Add a "fade in" at the beginning of it and a "fade out" at the end. Then on top of that, add your text. I also added a behavior to the text so it slowly displays from left to right... then fades out at the end. I hope that helps :-)
Rob !! Once again, GREAT demonstration and showing your details... VERY professional !! I see you have a DBX 286 in your equipment stack. Do you run the shotgun mic through that first and then enhance it in Adobe Audition ... or do you just simply run the mic "raw" to Adobe Audition bypassing the DBX 286 ??
I actually don't even use the DBX 286 any more... I used to use it for my live streams when I first started doing that... but I've never used it when making videos for uploading to youtube. FOr those I always just use Adobe Audition to make some adjustments to the audio :-)

Do you mean my video clips that I put in my videos? I don’t actually have a sophisticated system… if I want to reuse something I’ve already used, I’ll go to the project folder of that original video. I catalog my TH-cam videos into project folders that I name by date and title. If I were to start properly cataloging them I’d probably just use Google Sheets :) I hope that helps!
Thank you! To remove the glare from lights, make sure the lights are not directly behind the camera. Put them off to one side... 30-45 degrees off to the side... and also30-45 degrees above your camera. Light that shines down a little and from one side will remove any glare in your glasses (unless you turn your head so your glasses point directly at the lights), and those are also often more flattering looks when the light is shining down (thus creating more definition in the chin area and shadow below the chin). Rob, when you're sitting on the brown chair and doing the video intro with your script taped to the camera - do you do a long pause and glance at the script and edit out your glances after? Or are you ONLY glancing at the script before you record the full intro? Working on a video in a few hours and I need to figure out how to smoothly and quickly do the intro without a teleprompter and with my eyes straight on the camera. Would appreciate any tips!
It depends... I usually try to do a long pause and study the bullet points IN THE BEGINNING ONLY... if I want to try to do the video in one take. But if necessary, I can pause after each main point I want to talk about to re-look at the bullet points and get ready for the next point. BUT I do try to ONLY look at the camera during the intro as that's the most important part of the video in terms of keeping people's attention in the beginning. If I have to look away (or at my notes) later in the video, it's generally ok to do that... anyone who makes it a few minutes into the video is generally going to want to hear the next point to. Does that make sense?
Yes it's the only computer I use... it's the Macbook Pro (M1 Max chip - 2021) with 32 GB RAM and 2 TB drive. I like that it has an SD card slot so I can take those out of my camera and pop it right into the Macbook to transfer video files. When I record with my iPhone I can just Airdrop the video files from my iPhone to the Macbook. Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer :-)
@@aid4heaven No, mine doesn't overheat at all. The fan rarely comes on too... super quiet. Maybe because I have the M1 Max chip and yours is the basic M1? I'm not sure. But I remember having a choice between the M1 Pro chip and the M1 Max... and that the M1 Max would be better for video editing. I also have the 32-core GPU... maybe that makes a difference...

For this video it was about 68 GB and the final rendered video was 10.9 GB. I recorded all 3 cameras at 4k 30 fps, and that was also the final rendered video.
I only used Camtasia to edit the video. I used OBS to capture my screen and that created an mp4 video file of my screen... which I then brought into Camtasia when editing THIS video :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer Ok thanks for clarifying that. For editing software, have you tried DaVinci Resolve? I see a Camtasia subscription is around $250/yr which isn't terrible. But I think DaVinci is still free so I wondered if it would meet my needs at least when starting out. Thoughts?
@@ogwoodworks Yes I've used Davinci Resolve but I find it harder to learn and figure out. I have the paid version as the free version does not support "auto transcription/subtitles" which is something I wanted at the time. I have made some videos in Davinci... and you can do some pretty advanced things with it... but again, it's just harder to learn. I hope that helps :-)
@ogwoodworks On a Windows computer, I use two versions of Camtasia (2019 and 2024), which allows me to record my 2024 Camtasia window with 2019. Before I did that, I used either the Windows recorder (WIN+G) or PowerPoint -- neither of which record the cursor metadata. If we use OBS as Rob does, does that capture the cursor metadata so I can enlarge and smooth the cursor movements?
@@Jolene_Morris Using OBS does not allow you to manipulate the cursor after the fact… it just creates an mp4 video with the cursor burned in. Good question!
The reason for they would be a slow internet connection. iCloud is not on your computer… it’s in the cloud… on Apple servers. Therefore, transferring to or from iCloud is dependent on the speed of your internet connection. I hope that helps :-)
Wouldyou not find it much quicker to play the video then at the parts you want to split it each time you just hit a shot cut key to add a marker then once you have finished the whole video you can just then split it and have it delete that particular part, not familiar with the programme as I use davinci. also in davinci you can have it auto sync the audio channels Nice video tho many thanks

Great video! One tip to help sync your audio: Once all recording starts, take a few seconds of silence, and clap! The clap will be a distinctive point that will help you match the waveform!

This is why Hollywood still uses clapperboards to sync the audio and video.
If you need to sync, you should switch to premier. It will sync for you perfectly. Great video man
I've tried Premiere Pro and don't love it... far more complicated than Camtasia or Davinci... and Davinci Resolve does auto captioning as well. I know Premiere Pro is popular it's just not for me. Whatever works for you though... there's no wrong choice! All the best :)

Have a look at the Gravity stands MS 0200 SET1 boom mic but has a desk mount instead of your traditional tripod at the bottom. this is what I use and based on where your stand is, it'll save you a lot of space and no tripping! great video btw.

4:00 - SQUIRREL!! Thanks for another great video, Rob. I just finished editing my first video today. I want to stack a few ideas before I post it so that my videos can come out regularly. I can't believe you did both videos in 80 minutes. My edit took me over six hours, however, I did get a lot more familiar with my editing software, DaVinci Resolve. Still a lot to learn there to streamline things, but I did build a couple of templates. Incremental progress. Thanks again.
Peanut loves Cat TV! And yes, 80 minutes to record both videos and edit one of them... that was a fairly simple video to edit, as are most of the videos I make. This "Behind the scenes" video though took several hours to edit because I didn't want to leave it at 80 minutes long... so I went through it several times to edit out parts that were unnecessary to get the total length of time down :-) Good luck with your channel and videos!!

Hey Rob! Great Video - You give us older, technology challenged folks, a chance of making it possible!! One thing I love about your Camtasia workflow looks to be the ease of video editing. What's the easiest way of recreating some of your 'Favorite' title presets, and most used more basic add-ins to your work flow?
Thank you! Here's what I do and what I find easiest once I have a title the way I want it and if I want to re-use it across multiple projects: Since I'm using Camtasia on a mac, I'm able to have more than one project open at one time (can't do that on the PC version last time I checked). So what I do is I open a previous project that has the title I want... I highlight and Command-C copy it... then go to my current project and Command-V paste it. Then I modify the title with the new text. I do that with titles, images and even video clips I want to reuse.
Camtasia does have a template and library system that you can use to create presets... but I just find this way works best for my workflow. I hope that helps! :-)

Great, clear, and concise explanation of how you shoot and edit your videos. A question for you. I know that Adobe likes to operate on a subscription-based platform. Audition is one of those. Adobe Premier Pro allows you to record directly from an external mic to the software, and it seems to have pretty robust audio controls. Would it make more sense to use one program for everything or is it a personal preference?
Another alternative would be Apple's Final Cut Pro. The benefit of that is a one-time software purchase as opposed to a monthly ongoing subscription.
I think it ultimately comes down to personal preference. I've tried Premier Pro and found it difficult to learn. I haven't tried Final Cut Pro but another one I've used is Davinci Resolve... that one I found easier than Premier Pro, and very powerful, but still more difficult than Camtasia, in my opinion. Also, you don't have to use Adobe Audition for recording your audio and editing it... Audacity is a free software app you can use to do pretty much the same thing... I just happen to be more used to Adobe Audition :-) One of these days I may spend some more time with Audacity so that I can finally end my Audition subscription ;-)

I understand the entire process can be daunting so I really tried to simplify it in this video (except for the fact I did 2 camera angles... that's often unnecessary :). @@LifeAsAllen I think I was at around 500 subscribers when I finally did my first live stream... but wish I had started sooner! Live streams can really jump start your "watch hours" and grow them fast. What worked for me was advertising the live streams in the 2 or 3 videos I did leading up to my first live... and I scheduled it for the same day/time each week. Just food for thought... it's a great way to boost your channel's growth, whenever you're ready :-)
This is precisely what I'm looking for. I'm unsure why your video popped into my feed today; however, it did. I'm new to TH-cam videos and mainly experimenting with them while I work on launching another channel at the end of this year. I use a Final Cut Pro for editing and a MacBook Pro. I'm mildly surprised that the only items I need to include on your recommended list are the teleprompter and the lights. I'll be watching a few more of your videos; however, based on what I see here. It's safe to say that I will join your Creator's Cove.

I use the Atem mini for live streaming and love it… but it throttles back to 1080p, and I want to make my videos 4k…. So the Atem mini won’t work for that :)

You are geeking out bad there Rob, haha. It’s good to know all this stuff, but the most important thing is dont let all the tech stuff keep you from hitting record. I have done lots of multicam videos, but i realize the audience really does not care unless im doing a diy video where the different views are showing a totally different view that added to the information im talking about. I usually edit on a powerful pc that i built but i got a MacBook recently and trying to edit on PP on both now. If you are using adobe audition, time to start using PP for video editing, very powerful, i switched 5 years ago. I cant believe you are syncing manually, doesnt camtasia have an auto sync like PP. Doesn’t camtasia have a multicam mode, where you can use choose the camera as it plays, kind of like a tv studio does it. If you are going to use multi camera, you need to use a different program this is way too hard. In PP, you select all your tracks, audio and video, and PP syncs all the track automatically and creates a sequence for each synced track, you just drag in the sequence, everything is synced and ready for multicam edit. Sometimes im syncing 100 files at once, 25 scenes, 3 video tracks with audio, and one audio only track. 4 x 25 100 tracks synced in 30 seconds. Larry
I tend to agree with you... adding a second angle to a talking head video doesn't always add much (or anything) to a video other than breaking up a possibly monotonous story/message/script. If it doesn't add to or help a story, then it's probably unnecessary. It also may take away from the authenticity of a video.
I've tried Premier Pro and don't love it... maybe it just wasn't a good time for me. I do like using Davinci Resolve (which is similar in functionality to PP), but I just find Camtasia the easiest... especially for doing screen recording videos where I may want to zoom in and out and pan around... Camtasia is the easiest at doing things like that.
There is no "one size fits all" as far as video editing software goes... there is only "the best for you". They can all get the job done... it's a matter of finding your favorite :-)

Ah Camtasia! I try it every couple of years for the past 8 years in the hope that it will allow the detaching of the audio track so that you can then lip sync correctly is its ALWAYS out of sync. It’s not the computer or the processing power. Top end IMac, + MacBook Pro top end and recently Mac mini silicone. There are comments all over www about it but completely ignored by tech. I am a VERY long term user of Snagit which is a flagship product for sure. One can only hope that one day :-)
In Camtasia, if you right click a video clip that has audio in it you can "separate audio and video" into two separate tracks. You can then make adjustments to re-sync if yours are out of sync. Not sure why you have that problem though as I don't ever seem to have that issue. But I also don't typically use the audio that is captured by the video source... I record my audio separately and sync them anyways :)
@@RobtheMaritimer can you then NUDGE the track left/right to synce up. Even the nudge feature which is essential for editing was un-usable. Still this MAY have been fixed now.
@@Martin_Cole I'm not aware of a "nudge" feature... but you can zoom way in and "click and drag" a clip left or right, 1 frame at a time. Make sure "timeline snapping" is off when you do this as otherwise you'll have trouble "unsnapping" the ends (which will start snapped together). Once you have the video and audio synced properly, then I would trim the beginning and end of both clips so they line up. At that point you can "group" them together if you like :)

Lol good observation! I "pretended" to turn off the camera... that's just a habit I've gotten into. I didn't actually turn off the camera until a few seconds later when I explained when I turned it off :-)
This is GREAT Rob as always! Your presets in Audiate, do they involve cutting out some of the unecessary content e.g. umms etc.? I ask because at 12:58 when you're now lining up the tracks wouldn't the processed file have largely different waveforms because its processed and the audio from the other two camera tracks isn't? Hope that makes sense - thanks for the great content as always!
It was Audition I used, not Audiate... although you can use Audiate to do the exact same thing :) And NO I did not remove any umms, ahhs or any mistakes at all from the audio file... I only "enhanced" it by adding equalizer, compression, etc. Because of exactly what you said... if I had removed anything in the audio file BEFORE syncing it with the video file, then things would've been out of sync. So any mistakes (or anything at all) I want to remove, I wait until the audio is synced with the video and then I remove BOTH audio and video sections at the same time. I hope that helps :-)

Thank you and great question! You certainly can do that... however, when I mak my videos sitting in the brown chair, I like to use my shotgun mic... that's the best mic I have... and it has an XLR connection. XLR will only connect to my computer and not to my camera (or iPhone) unless I buy an expensive piece of equipment. So I've gotten used to just capturing my audio separately and then syncing it with my video in post. HAVING SAID THAT, the new DJI mic I just got WILL connect directly to my camera or my iPhone... but it's still not as good IMO as my shotgun mic. But when I go outside and use the DJI mic, then I can have that plugged directly into my phone and record that way... then no syncing will be required :) I hope that helps! Hi Rob! I’m glad I found your channel. I have a TH-cam channel and sometimes I need to Zoom in on something while I’m recording. Does Camtasia have that feature? I called them, but the woman said you can do that post record. I need to know if the software has the capability to zoom in and out “while” I’m recording. I appreciate your help. 😊
Camtasia will just record your screen... so whatever is on your screen will be recorded. Camtasia itself cannot zoom in on your screen "live"... if you want to do that live then you'd have to zoom your screen using screen zooming software. I remember looking into that a couple years ago but it turned out being more difficult than I wanted it to be. So what I do now is I add the "zoom ins and outs" after the fact... when I'm editing the video I recorded. I hope that helps :-)
Good work, Rob. Do you put your final MP4 through Handbrake before uploading to TH-cam? It makes a massive difference to the file size.
No I don't. I've used handbrake in other instances, but lately I don't bother with that step... I might if my internet connection was slower, but no need right now. Handbrake can be very useful :) Good tip!

Yes that’s exactly right! I created my “effects stack” about 3 years ago and I still use it because I love the sound. So just 1 click in the favourites tab applies all effects :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes I'll be covering that in a future live stream... but I can describe it now: Add a black rectangle shape and completely cover your video with it for the 3-4 seconds you want your title to display. Then reduce the opacity to 70% (so it's slightly see-through). Add a "fade in" at the beginning of it and a "fade out" at the end. Then on top of that, add your text. I also added a behavior to the text so it slowly displays from left to right... then fades out at the end. I hope that helps :-)

Do you run the shotgun mic through that first and then enhance it in Adobe Audition ... or do you just simply run the mic "raw" to Adobe Audition bypassing the DBX 286 ??
I actually don't even use the DBX 286 any more... I used to use it for my live streams when I first started doing that... but I've never used it when making videos for uploading to youtube. FOr those I always just use Adobe Audition to make some adjustments to the audio :-)

Do you mean my video clips that I put in my videos? I don’t actually have a sophisticated system… if I want to reuse something I’ve already used, I’ll go to the project folder of that original video. I catalog my TH-cam videos into project folders that I name by date and title. If I were to start properly cataloging them I’d probably just use Google Sheets :) I hope that helps!
Hello Rob, You are almost there in getting me to record. My question is How do you film without that glare in your eyeglasses? I like your videos.
Thank you! To remove the glare from lights, make sure the lights are not directly behind the camera. Put them off to one side... 30-45 degrees off to the side... and also30-45 degrees above your camera. Light that shines down a little and from one side will remove any glare in your glasses (unless you turn your head so your glasses point directly at the lights), and those are also often more flattering looks when the light is shining down (thus creating more definition in the chin area and shadow below the chin). Rob, when you're sitting on the brown chair and doing the video intro with your script taped to the camera - do you do a long pause and glance at the script and edit out your glances after? Or are you ONLY glancing at the script before you record the full intro? Working on a video in a few hours and I need to figure out how to smoothly and quickly do the intro without a teleprompter and with my eyes straight on the camera. Would appreciate any tips!
It depends... I usually try to do a long pause and study the bullet points IN THE BEGINNING ONLY... if I want to try to do the video in one take. But if necessary, I can pause after each main point I want to talk about to re-look at the bullet points and get ready for the next point. BUT I do try to ONLY look at the camera during the intro as that's the most important part of the video in terms of keeping people's attention in the beginning. If I have to look away (or at my notes) later in the video, it's generally ok to do that... anyone who makes it a few minutes into the video is generally going to want to hear the next point to. Does that make sense?

what Macbook do you use? Is this the only computer you are using for your entire work including editing?
Yes it's the only computer I use... it's the Macbook Pro (M1 Max chip - 2021) with 32 GB RAM and 2 TB drive. I like that it has an SD card slot so I can take those out of my camera and pop it right into the Macbook to transfer video files. When I record with my iPhone I can just Airdrop the video files from my iPhone to the Macbook. Let me know if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer :-)

@@aid4heaven No, mine doesn't overheat at all. The fan rarely comes on too... super quiet. Maybe because I have the M1 Max chip and yours is the basic M1? I'm not sure. But I remember having a choice between the M1 Pro chip and the M1 Max... and that the M1 Max would be better for video editing. I also have the 32-core GPU... maybe that makes a difference...

How much data has the production cameras and audio recordings add up to?
For this video it was about 68 GB and the final rendered video was 10.9 GB. I recorded all 3 cameras at 4k 30 fps, and that was also the final rendered video.

Were you using Camtasia to capture your screen and edit the video at the same time, or do you need to run two instances of Camtasia to do this?
I only used Camtasia to edit the video. I used OBS to capture my screen and that created an mp4 video file of my screen... which I then brought into Camtasia when editing THIS video :-)
@@RobtheMaritimer Ok thanks for clarifying that. For editing software, have you tried DaVinci Resolve? I see a Camtasia subscription is around $250/yr which isn't terrible. But I think DaVinci is still free so I wondered if it would meet my needs at least when starting out. Thoughts?
@@ogwoodworks Yes I've used Davinci Resolve but I find it harder to learn and figure out. I have the paid version as the free version does not support "auto transcription/subtitles" which is something I wanted at the time. I have made some videos in Davinci... and you can do some pretty advanced things with it... but again, it's just harder to learn. I hope that helps :-)
@ogwoodworks On a Windows computer, I use two versions of Camtasia (2019 and 2024), which allows me to record my 2024 Camtasia window with 2019. Before I did that, I used either the Windows recorder (WIN+G) or PowerPoint -- neither of which record the cursor metadata. If we use OBS as Rob does, does that capture the cursor metadata so I can enlarge and smooth the cursor movements?
@@Jolene_Morris Using OBS does not allow you to manipulate the cursor after the fact… it just creates an mp4 video with the cursor burned in. Good question!

It takes my iPhone forever to download video onto iCloud on my computer. What could be the reason for that?
The reason for they would be a slow internet connection. iCloud is not on your computer… it’s in the cloud… on Apple servers. Therefore, transferring to or from iCloud is dependent on the speed of your internet connection. I hope that helps :-)

Wouldyou not find it much quicker to play the video then at the parts you want to split it each time you just hit a shot cut key to add a marker then once you have finished the whole video you can just then split it and have it delete that particular part, not familiar with the programme as I use davinci. also in davinci you can have it auto sync the audio channels
