    To my surprise, I don't remember to have been told about toe picks used for take off and landing in waltz jump, so I kept landing small waltz jumps on the middle of the blade! Thank you for clarifying this point!

    I'm starting ice skating lessons as a 21 year old guy next week and hoping to get into figure skating. Since i'm older, I've been kind of having confidence issues about whether I should even start because others have been training since they were kids, but I just want to say your videos explain the different moves and basics about ice skating so well that I feel like I understand the move before I even do it on the ice!

      Heyy, do you still iceskate? If so, how’s your journey going? I have also just recently started skating, I am 16 years old and I also used to doubt that I’ll ever achieve my goals, just because I started too late.. but now I know, that this is not right! So if you have just started, even if you are 21 years old, with a lot of practice and passion you’ll be able to do jumps for sure!:)

    Oh my God! yesterday we started waltz jump! I am so excited yet ultra scared cause coach just demonstrated silently and wanted us to do it center ice. Needless to say .. I wouldn't dare knowing i am going to 100% slip and fall =)
    Now with your initial practice and knowing that the toe pick is my point of balance, I feel excited to hit the rink and take over a wall for practice. THANK YOU!
    I fell a lot yesterday and annoyed my left wrist, bruised my right knee (no coloring just pain lol), and and hurt a bone down somewhere (nothing serious). But i am proud that I actually am excited to go to the rink! Just for fun since it is the weekend and practicing is literally dangerous in those public sessions lol

    This is awesome! I have taken group lessons on and off for the past few years but I never go into the free/pre-freestyle classes because they are during a time I work, so I tried a private lessons teacher but they never told me to go through my topic for the takeoff or the landing soI've just been taking off of the blade!! That looks like it makes much more sense they also never told me it was supposed to be on a curve. Don't get me wrong I think she was a good teacher for other skill levels but I don't think she was used to teaching adults who want to do higher level skating.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sorry to hear your coach didn't fully explain this jump to you. Unfortunately a lot of coaches just jump into it after completing their own skating career and don't take any of the instruction courses that are available to them. So they have an understanding of skating, but not an understanding about how to break down a move in a zillion different ways so that skaters can comprehend it.

      @hanhsiao Hi! I am so glad you are enjoying my videos. The move you are talking about is called and Edge Pull or a Power Pull in English. I would be happy to make a tutorial about that and will do my best to get it on my list right away!

    I landed my first Waltz Jumps today and now I'm wondering if I should practice it on both feet. I always jump from the left and land on the right. 🤔
    It's such a nice feeling to land them for a beginner! 🎉

    So much help! My biggest fault is that I feel like I'm not getting enough "air" on my jump. Is this because of lack of speed or lack of bent knee going into the jump? Thank you in advance for your help!

    Does taking off and landing on toe pick trick apply to doing waltz jump with inline figure skates as well or it's just for ice skates?

  • @Krys579

    I’m really struggling to end on an outside edge and I think it might be due to where my hip is when I land but also general discomfort in going backwards outside edge. Should you be able to do backward outside edges first before attempting a waltz jump? And when you land, are your hips open to the left? Everyone at the rink makes it look so easy!

    Hi Julia, do you have any advice on how to rock onto the toepick for the jump? Sometimes when I jump I don’t take off from my toepick and take off through just my edge, but sometimes I can manage to rock onto my toepick, and it’ll be great if you can give me some advice :)

    Just curious, where can I get boots simular to yours? I don't see brown or tan boots online too often.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  ปีที่แล้ว

      My boots are custom Harlick skates. Most of the brown/tan skates you see are custom made. There is one company that recently started making a stock tan boot but I have really mixed feelings about it. Edea makes a boot called the 'showgirl' that comes in tan with a red bottom. It is designed for pro skaters/coaches who aren't skating as much. The mixed feelings come from the fact that I know several people who have ordered them and then were unhappy. But they were all switching from Harlick so I'm not sure how much of their unhappiness was that their Harlicks were custom and these aren't, or if it is just because it is such a cheeper boot?

    Hello Julia,
    Thank you for this amazing tutorial. I actually learned how to do the Waltz Jump with this video and I feel safe doing it now. Only quastion I cannot answer myself is: how can I jump higher than just taking off the ice a few centimeters? Do I have to go deeper in my knee on the sakting knee for take off or bring my knee more up from the free leg?
    Thank you for your answer!

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So glad my tutorial was a help to you. For a higher jump you will want to do a few things. Increase your speed at take-off, deepen the bend into your take-off leg and then increase the force of your jump off the ice (and also jump all the way through your rocker so that even the tips of your toes are pushing). And finally you will want to get the strongest swing to the front through your free leg that you can. hope that helps!

    Ive been jumping for a while now (im up to lutz singles) but only taking group classes and no one really emphasized the purpose of the toe pick and the natural jumping motion you need to maintain even in ice skates of rocking up to the toe even on edge jumps. I had been getting some hip pain and wonder if it is from that. This and your loop video have me needing to rehash my technique a bit.
    What do you think about jumping to your other rotation (clockwise vs ccw)? I hate how the coaches want you to pick one but like I am 36 and just learning and both feel the same to me and I don't want to develop overuse or muscle imbalances.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Coaches usually have you choose a side, because as your jumps increase in difficulty (and spins) you want to rotate the direction that is more natural for your body, so that you are not adding any challenge to an already challenging maneuver. Unless you are planning on training like an elite level athlete for hours and hours on the ice, you shouldn't have to worry about overuse or imbalances.

    • @CoachJulia

      This jump is great to practice off ice, just eliminate the backward crossovers and the rest of the technique should be about the same.
