    I love waltz jumps I think I’m pretty good at them but when I was learning them my coach told me it would help if I tried to do it over a line and pretend the line was a river and waltz jump over it and it really helped me.

    I was forced to quit figure skating from money issues about two years ago and during my last lesson, this is the move they were teaching us. I never got it down, but my family is in a better place now and I hope to join skating again. Hopefully I can learn this move before then 🤞

    Took me a week to learn the movement, get confidence and some repetitiveness. Now I just gotta put in those reps to get even more height and speed. Your unique style of more bend in the knee of free leg made it a lot easier for me to land since I do it in hockey skates (I know, a bit crazy :P). Great tutorials, keep them coming!

    Hi Coach Mary, thanks for making this video and answering so many questions in the comments! It seems to me many people share the same issue - launching off the toe pick. I've been practicing the Waltz jump for over a year but still couldn't quite take off from the toe pick as clearly as what you show in the video. Do you mind shedding more light on this issue? I'd really appreciate it!

    If you practice this skill enough and are ready to add some extra movements into it you can do a butterfly kick on ice, I’ve only seen it done on hockey skates though. The Waltz jump is the core movement to a butterfly kick, a good reference for this is done by Nagyerdei Korisok.
    Edit: I just saw a few clips of figure skaters doing butterfly kicks, it’s possible.

    • @CoachMarySkating
      @CoachMarySkating  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      of course! if you take off in the middle of your blade for example, you won't properly launch off in the air to get your maximum height hope that helps

    • @CoachMarySkating
      @CoachMarySkating  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hang in there! It will come with time. Practice rolling up at the wall. Then gliding and practicing bending and rocking up from the mid blade to the toe. Think about trying to stand on your big toe. Off ice helps too! Best of luck.

    • @leannemartin9137
      @leannemartin9137 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mary.....this is going to sound strange (maybe)....I think I’ve overcome this problem a bit - completely by accident and something I wouldn’t even thought would’ve related to it, but I got lazy doing up my laces today, and left them really loose for the first 4 holes from the toes - for 18 months I have always done them up rather snug!!!!!! Anyway, today, I got a bit more height on my waltz, was able to actually launch from the toe on my Salchow, able to get more to the back of my blade for my toe Loop and found the “sweetspot” 3x in a row for my spin!!!!!!! Could it really have been that simple???? I’m beyond happy if it is.....

      Hi! Kind of - a waltz jump is 1/2 revolution, 1.5 revolutions is called an axel, 2.5 double axel, 3.5 triple axel

      @@CoachMarySkating Oh, so good to know that Axel came from Waltz :o I usually skated and watched figure skating for fun but now I try to know some more things like jumps etc so I'm still kind of new in all of this. And it's really interesting, that Axel is 1,5 Waltz. 😁

      it would be more difficult due to a lack of toe pick, but i have seen it done before

      it is possible but more difficult due to lack of toe pick and different blade design

      It's okay to be scared! Try with your coach or at the boards. Be comfortable with hops, bunny hops, etc.

    Wonder why people are now teaching this with the free leg all bent up? I think the straightened out free leg when jumping looks much cleaner....just my $0.02.
