I'm glad they showed this with people who are already comfortable on the ice. Figure skating is like ballet: It is so intricate and difficult but looks effortless if done correctly.
Yeah. For many people, the scratch spin or one foot spin may look easy, but as a figure skater, they are hard to learn at first. And I’ve had some pretty hard falls with my spirals.
That actually makes me curious to see the opposite- people who are already comfortable with the difficultly of balance and movement required for figure skating but not comfortable with the ice. Basically I just think it would be interesting to see ballet dancers try figure skating. I’ve been a performer/dancer for years but never on ice but I’ve always been curious about trying it.
I've never seen a professional do most of those things, as they would be way too easy for competition. Things like this really make you appreciate the level of skill that ice skaters require
Not really? They do the first one all the time for their balance point it's just that they make it even higher. Even the second one skaters would incorporate other aspects and make combination spins.
And third tevjinique is definitely used in step sequences. If anything this entire video shows that all skaters need to master their basics because it will be used again and again later on
A lot of this stuff is just basic stuff you first learn when starting out. The reason you don’t see higher level skaters doing it is because the lower levels do it in competition. However spirals are used all throughout skating in things like moves and programs. I use waltz jumps to warm up for all my jumps. Also, these are learned first because they are the basics that build fundamentals needed throughout the sport as you become more advanced.
Response to all: "most of these things" does not mean "all of this things" so yes, spirals are used often. The other ones may be the base for other stuff used in competition, but so much is added in order to increase the level that they almost look like different things. That was my point

While falling in hockey, football, lacrosse, etc happens its not what the pads are protecting against. Its the other players, the sticks, pucks or ball. A 250lb man flying at you at high speed and slamming you into plexiglass is what the pads help with. Many football players are even larger. A slap shot in hockey can probably kill if not for a helmet. Even with helmets and pads there are many injuries. Its just a different goal for the athletes. Figure skaters, gymnasts, dancers etc, definetly have to worry about falling. They can be high in the air or moving at speed. So for them the ground is the biggest threat. So they need that control and precision to not die. The hockey players, football, etc don't have a fear of the ground as it isnt a threat. The don't need control and precision to not get hurt, they need it to play the game. Control the puck, throw or shoot the ball or puck, catch a throw. All are amazing athletes they all just focus on different aspects. Which makes sense considering they all do different sports or activities.

I know a football player who did dance classes all the way through high school. He played for Navy, so he was decent player and one of his sisters is a professional dancer.
This was incredibly funny and awesome. I played hockey for 35-years and when I first started, a slightly older friend who was drafted by the Blackhawks told me to take figure skating lessons for at least a couple of years. He said it would be the best thing I could do regarding skating, especially on my edges etc. So I did, until we had to start jumping, lol... That didn't go so well and the thought of breaking an ankle or landing on my face got the best of me so I stopped the lessons. Funny how hockey players just assume they'll take a puck or stick to the face multiple times but "that's just part of the game", but getting hurt figure skating was out of the question. Yea, mad respect for figure skaters. Side note: At one point I was dating a girl that was super into ballet, had taken lessons for a long time, etc, but had never been to a professional ballet. So I bought front row tickets to a couple of big ballet shows for her. I was totally blown away. I remember telling her afterwards, "forget tough hockey players, THESE are real athletes." True story, lol. Thanks for the great and funny videos, all were awesome - although I'm a little disappointed in Ivo only popping out a dozen F-Bombs. ;)
“It’s not just all glitter and costumes” - I don’t think anyone has ever thought figure skating is just glitter and costumes Lol. It looks insanely difficult. ⭐️
No one asked for this but reminds me of when I was kid, my skatium would hold ice shows. They would hold us in the hockey player’s changing rooms and we would spray sparkly hairspray ALL OVER ourselves(me), so much that that the floor would be *covered* in sparkles. The hockey players hated us for it lol.
Its birdcatkity well, truthfully, it’s not actually that cold in the ice skatium. Plus they’re moving around a lot so at the end of their performance, skaters are usually sweating
A few years ago, I was performing at a competition. I was standing on the ice for about 5 minutes before they finally played the music. It was March. I was freezing

@@specktakel8703 Lol it's not about fragility though. He was completely confused about how to be elegant in the first place. If you're not used to it, it feels weird.
I love how they have so much experience in the ice but doing this is totally new to them and they look like they put skates on for the first time. This is really cute to watch. Evo and Nichelle look related lol
IIRC the skate blades are literally built differently, someone else described hockey blades as like rocking chairs as opposed to the flatness of figure skating blades
@@healgoth yeah, very different, but figure skating blades aren't entirely flat. You have a slight curve (the rocker) near the front, just before you hit the toe pick, and that allows you to rotate the skate in place without shaving a ton of ice with the flat bit. But if you lean too far into it (and it is really subtle and hard to hit at first) you hit the toe pick and you either slow down, pivot, or faceplant, depending on what you were trying to do

My favorite part is Ivo actually doing alright in the slightly challenging things but literally failing at just simply skating...like sir, isn't that what you do 24/7 in ice hockey? 😂
Have you ever tried both type of skates? The one for hockey and the other for classic skating? Like they said - the hockeys skates don´t have the teeth in front, so if you are used to skating with those and then you´ll take the figure skates, the skates teeth will stucking in ice everytime when you put some weight on front part of skate.

Despite both being performed on ice, figure skating and hockey are two completely different sports. I think that a lot of people compare them as if they were similar, but there’s really not a whole lot of overlap between them. Both are challenging in their own way.
I think Ivo naturally favours the forward part of his skates more so than the others, so he was having more difficulty with accidentally digging in his toe picks.
Michelle’s spiral was actually pretty good. She just needed to point her toe. But I was really impressed with how good it was for her first time trying it.
Something Ivo pointed out was there are a ton of different pieces to focus on in figure skating. The same is true for ballet. while doing any move in both you have to think 'am I looking up, are my hips/feet turned out, is my chest up' for someone not used to that I think the skaters all did a Wonderfull job!
For those of you saying Ivo is being nervous because he's the only dude hold on a sec. I think it's more about how he thinks. He wanted to look and observe the spin first before he tries it which is something I personally do as I am more visual. He's not confident in himself and people display a lack of confidence differently. Some people go right in and try and others are a little weary and want to test the water. It doesn't have to do with he's the only dude. Edit: They also are prob not very confident in not hurting themselves without gear. This is an age where falling hard definetly hurts.
@@specktakel8703 I don't really think so. He looks to be in his 30s and falling at that age can really hurt. Now he does know how to fall correctly but a bad fall could break something pretty easily. Edit: I don't really view age as a taboo thing so if that was what you were implying, I personally don't find it much of an issue.
@@ee-hangodfrey5204 oh honey it's okay I just ment it as a joke. Although I am convinced that you can break your bones at any age and I don't view 30 as that critical point

Im glad figure skating is being highlighted recently. People dont realize how much athleticism it actually requires because most often people just think its enotive dancing. Yup pair the fact that some of these insane figure skaters are jumping 3 to 4 revolutions/spins mid air. Constantly challenging physics itself lol THE STAMINA PLUS FINESSE required. Other sports cant relate.
YOU GUYS ARE INCREDIBLE! I tried ice skating for the first time in a long time (as a rollerskater) and thought, oh I maybe have this I can skate right (I was very wrong). It's very much harsher on your ankles than quads! even artistic rollerskating is such a different set of skills compared to derby skating!
Hannah Louise I’ve been figuring skating for about 6 years now and recently went roller skating (hadn’t since I was a kid) and thought the same thing! “I can’t skate, this won’t be too bad” and omg I did not last long at all. Sooooo much friction! My quads were dying.
UK - years ago a soccer team took a ballet class. They swaggered in confident in their fitness and abilities to take on a mere dance class. They hobbled out with the utmost respect for ballet dancers's regime! Funny and educational by turn
As someone who figure skated for ten years and played hockey for six I really appreciated this video. It shows how much more nimble a figure skater has to be and how even simple tricks require proper balance and coordination, not to mention an honest effort.
Even skating in figure skates feels very different the blade is just a tiny bit longer and if you don't pay attention to that your gonna fall on your face alot (usually you catch the bottom most toe pick and topple face firat)
@@ashrowan2143 so true! Although for me because I started figure skating so early I actually had more trouble with hockey skates. As you said they are shorter and both ends are rounded with nothing to catch you. So at first whenever I would lean back or lean forward too far I would just tip over. 😂
Figure skaters tend to do reasonably well at those sorts of challenges because they have better basic skating skills. A few of the men have hockey backgrounds - Max Aaron was Team USA U16 for hockey and became US National Champion in figure skating.
Heidi Marie The Olympic Channel has a video for it here on TH-cam. The figure skater could barely stand in hockey skates. People forget that, while there is some overlap, it‘s a completely different type of skating.
I played hockey through a division 1 college program. So I've spent lots of time on the ice. Hockey players generally do respect figure skaters, its right, because at a high level of competition their technical skating abilities are really impressive. Also, if you don't know, hockey blades are quite different than figure skate blades. If I skate in figure states I have a bad habit of catching the teeth on the ice and face planting.

Thanks for the great and funny videos, all were awesome - although I'm a little disappointed in Ivo only popping out a dozen F-Bombs. ;)
i love how he asked if he can drop f-bombs lmao
Yeah but then it just got excessively stupid.

Very astute observation🤣 [Leone]
Ivo deliberately resists learning
My favorite part is Ivo actually doing alright in the slightly challenging things but literally failing at just simply skating...like sir, isn't that what you do 24/7 in ice hockey? 😂
Have you ever tried both type of skates? The one for hockey and the other for classic skating? Like they said - the hockeys skates don´t have the teeth in front, so if you are used to skating with those and then you´ll take the figure skates, the skates teeth will stucking in ice everytime when you put some weight on front part of skate.
@@miraf001 Didn't actually know about that! (Also didn't catch it while watching cause it was pretty late) So thanks for letting me know! It's still somehow a little funny cause you'd expect him to fall during the jumps or anything like that, but nope 🙇🏻♀️

Ivo and his pure happiness when he was able to do the pivot xD
I think he felt pressure as a coach to get it right and worried too much about "how".
Time stamp?
Ivo is the equivalent of my thoughts while doing anything new
Something Ivo pointed out was there are a ton of different pieces to focus on in figure skating.
Okay I agree but it was kinda shades to bring his age into this
@@specktakel8703 I don't really think so. He looks to be in his 30s and falling at that age can really hurt. Now he does know how to fall correctly but a bad fall could break something pretty easily.

Plus zero padding. No mats, no equipment, nothing but ice and a layer of clothes
What?? What world do you live in that people think there’s no athleticism involved ? It’s basically on par with gymnastics
I'm glad people are realizing how much athleticism dancing requires
Hannah Louise I’ve been figuring skating for about 6 years now and recently went roller skating (hadn’t since I was a kid) and thought the same thing! “I can’t skate, this won’t be too bad” and omg I did not last long at all. Sooooo much friction! My quads were dying.
UK - years ago a soccer team took a ballet class. They swaggered in confident in their fitness and abilities to take on a mere dance class. They hobbled out with the utmost respect for ballet dancers's regime! Funny and educational by turn
Can't like this enough. Everyone, including the coaches, is incredibly charming. I liked seeing them learn and don't even care who was best.
yeah like none of the hockey players were bad sports and all of the coaches were encouraging
As someone who figure skated for ten years and played hockey for six I really appreciated this video. It shows how much more nimble a figure skater has to be and how even simple tricks require proper balance and coordination, not to mention an honest effort.
You are a real life Eric Bittle! 🥰😍
Dance, figure skating, etc. Is not a easy as people think. We just make it look good.
Been playing hockey for 20 years, and you wont be nimble enough to get out of my way if I steamroll you.

They already did a video like that, where a figure skater is trying hockey. It's great
@@Scyllaya for real! I wanna see that!:)
We saw that in Go Figure 😂😂
I played hockey through a division 1 college program. So I've spent lots of time on the ice. Hockey players generally do respect figure skaters, its right, because at a high level of competition their technical skating abilities are really impressive. Also, if you don't know, hockey blades are quite different than figure skate blades. If I skate in figure states I have a bad habit of catching the teeth on the ice and face planting.
